Has the gun-control movement overtaken the sex-control movement?

I say yes, solely on the basis of the signs I'm seeing at the protests that say "Arms Are For Hugging":

I can understand thinking of that slogan, with the obvious flipping of the meaning of "arms," but I would expect you to reject it or quickly hear from someone telling you to reject it because it is so discordant with the message of #MeToo. Just because you have arms doesn't make it self-evident that you have a right to hug me. It's saying biology is destiny, like saying "penises are for penetrating." Is that supposed to be an argument for something? The #MeToo movement has the message that your body is yours and no one else's desire for physical contact should prevail over your own idea of what is right for you. Yes, you have arms, but you don't have to hug.

And quite beyond this #MeToo discordance — arms , your flesh-and-blood arms, are useful for many things, not just hugging. Even assuming you like to hug and have someone you want to hug, there are lots of other things you can do with your arms, and you get to decide what they are "for." You might use your arms to use tools and build something, or to write or make communicative gestures (like a fist salute), or to play baseball, or to knit, or to aim a rifle (the other kind of arm) at a deer you're hunting for sport or an intruder who is breaking into your house and might otherwise rape you.

Oh! I'm back to #MeToo things again....

This was a Democrat Get Out the Vote rally run by the DNC and its fellow travelers.

It was also a good reason to keep voting age at 21.

Every mass movement is going to be borderline incoherent. Organizing a march or public meeting that is open to anyone will open it up to people who don't stick to the program. Even if the organizers are professionals funded by deep-pockets political organizations, you still aren't going to be able to tell people who feel an affinity with the movement how to express that affinity. This is why the major parties completely control who gets inside their televised conventions.

If you are in favor of a movement, you accept that fact. You will accept that some people in your march may not have a great grasp of the relevant facts. If extreme elements show up, you will point how small their numbers are compared to the whole.

Because if you want to have a grass-roots mass movement with any real energy or urgency, you have to accept the non-professionals, even if they have dumb signs or have their heads stuffed with fluff.

On the other hand, if you are contemptuous of a movement, you seek out and highlight the most incoherent or extreme members you can find. This line of counterattack is completely predictable. If you find yourself nodding along, be aware that your are being pointed to see exactly what someone wants you to see.

That was a truly horrible article.

like saying "penises are for penetrating."

"Arms are for hugging" is just a slogan based on the human tendency to practice teleology.

I'm thinking you need to ask the alphabet networks to find out which absurd news story is creating the most revenue.

What Michael K. said. Gotta keep the base riled up and angry! for November.

What happens at the end of the school year when this movement peters out? Do students become disillusioned with “the system”? Do they get the urge to protest out of “their system”? If they are heading off to college, that might be a good thing.

It is being reported that NRA scientists are developing a clear plastic gun that can be concealed in the newly required clear backpacks. Truly evil, these people.

Pussies don't like dicks, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes - assholes who just want to shit on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way, but the only thing that can fuck an asshole is a dick, with some balls

Know what else arms are good for? Wearing armbands. I've noticed they dropped that idea. They're apparently concerned with appearances rather than ideas.

Somebody certainly has the money and expertise necessary to organize a "spontaneous" protest movement, complete with mass transportation, loudspeakers, and lecterns, down pat, but I don't think it is this Hogg kid.

Has the gun-control fad overtaken the sex-control fad?

It'd be interesting to see how long these fads generate advertising revenue before people get bored with them, and what that might depend on: lasciviousness, "national importance", etc.

The whole demonstration thing is... is childish. It is being done by children, isn't it? And so adults are supposed to be persuaded by it? No, only other children.

BUMBLE BEE said...

As I recall from the 60s PC "Movements" are about self promotion and hookin up.

Somebody should ask Cindy Sheehan for her views.
Absolute. Moral. Authority. is tricky business.

In the Children's Crusade, those who survived the march wound up on the slave markets in Greece and Turkey.

Fingers are made for crossing and holding behind your back whilst making speeches and promises........Every time there is a Muslim enacted atrocity we are asked to remember that the overwhelming majority of Muslims do not engage in mass slaughter and, in fact, are critical of such practices (those that do not involve cartoonists, anyway). When there is a school shooting, however, we are asked to remember how callous NRA members are about the murder of children. Things are said about NRA members that would never be said about Muslims.

I saw on someone't timeline on Facebook earlier this week and red/blue map of the school walkouts on March 14, with blue being a location of every known walkout. It looked almost like the county by county election map, maybe even a little less blue than the counties Hillary won. I don't think this movement is as big as the progs and the press make it out to be.

At least #MeToo doesn’t have a spokesperson giving a Nazi salute, so there’s that.

Can we call this the Chickenhawk Crusade?

The ridiculous YouGov poll - it used to arrive on my computer once a month to take or not take - says a majority of Americans favor gun control of some sort. It also says 4 of 5 Democrats disapprove of hunting while 2 of 3 Democrats approve of abortion.

If true, how are sane people supposed to reconcile with A political party more concerned about ducks and turkeys than about unborn children? Why would we want to?

Now their mouthpieces on burning social issues are adolescents?

It is a tribute to the stupidity of the American people and, mostly, Republicans, that this party that should have become extinct after 2016 may challenge for control of Congress.

I’m getting rid of the old Stevens double in favor of a Remington 870 Tactical. More firepower. That’s the ticket.

The NRA doesnt’ sell arms.

But Planned Parenthood DOES sell arms. And legs. And hearts. And kidneys. But only in size extra-small.

The Pro-Choice Church, married to left-wing ideology, but also evident in the liberal/libertarian nexus, has a history of disarming people in war and peace for profit and pleasure in unprecedented numbers.

Birkel: Chickenhawks are male pro-war conservatives who never served in the military, e.g. Glenn Reynolds. A cuck (according to Kirk, thanks buddy!) is a conservative male who votes for a phony conservative who then goes on to cave in to Democrats like Trump just did.

Today I flagged down a group of teenagers at the park who were riding the down the street in an SUV with two of the teenagers on the roof. "No, no. That is a very bad idea. You need to get down right now." "Yes, ma'am. Sorry, ma'am." Good manners. Probably not the best authorities on safety or risk assessment.
