"Reflecting on the Second World War, Hannah Arendt suggested that totalitarianism takes root in societies where lots of people feel unnecessary or unwanted."

"After the 2016 election, it was common for the media to report on underemployed people in the Rust Belt who felt that they’d been cast aside. Today, manosphere ideology rages against a society that, allegedly, claims not to need men, and young people wonder whether there’s room for them in an A.I.-saturated workforce. Recently, even world-class mathematicians have felt the sting of redundancy. In a blog post titled 'The Mathocalypse,' the mathematician Scott Aaronson recounts what his nine-year-old son told his wife, the computer scientist Dana Moshkovitz: 'Mommy . . . I heard that a robot solved the math problem you worked on for your whole career!'"

From "Do You Feel Needed? Being necessary has never been more necessary—or more difficult," by Joshua Rothman in The New Yorker.

Ah the need to feel needed. This is an inversion of the alleged trend of “altruism” among the godless tech titans who see themselves as the New Annointed for the simple reason they control the present “magic mirror” that people can access **only because the titans have made it available** and with this new and growing power comes the responsibility to “fix things” like “our democracy.”

But we ALL are necessary, in that we were designed with a purpose, and blessed with physical and mental abilities to fulfill our purpose. That doesn’t change just because a machine is faster at doing some things. Would a modern audience even understand Man of La Mancha the way we did 60 years ago?

We’ve spent 50 years telling ALL students they MUST go to college during the same period when Big Ed had a 90% decline in success at teaching necessary skills. They set up huge expectations that the credentials would make them rich, not average, certainly not UNEMPLOYABLE. But really the idea Big Ed got away with selling worthless degrees (on credit backed by taxpayers) to millions of dumb students who graduated in debt and hopelessly mismatched for the jobs market was only possible because together Uniparty politicians kept the illusion of the “necessary degrees” alive simply to keep donations coming from Big Ed Unions.

But the banality of evil implied that Nazi evil doers were dull accountants following orders. Brilliant. And the phrase worked its magic although completely untrue about Eichmann, whose trial she was covering at the time.

"Today, manosphere ideology rages against a society that, allegedly, claims not to need men,..."

Well...it's pretty clear that this society has spent a couple of decades at least, dismissing boys/men and raising up our girls/women. Remember the push to increase the self-esteem of our girls? And you've probably gotten used to men being portrayed as clumsy, clueless, dolts, who are either dumb handymen or rapists, needing to lean on the women around them to get them through the day. In commercials, TV shows, movies. It's the script standard these days. Anyway, we've made men toxic and praised women just for being over the course of years and so this is the result. Numbers: Women graduate high school in the US at a clip of 89%. Men: 85%. Then the drop off. Bachelor's Degrees in the US: Women: 58%; Men: 42%. Masters Degrees: Women: 61%; Men: 39%; Doctorate Degrees: Women/Men: 61%- 39% or 54%- 46%, depending on the area of study. I would say the push to raise women has been a complete success. Too bad about your sons.

As for the 'manosphere'. I'm not sure actual men pay any attention to some guy who shaves his chest showing himself on videos and telling you to be like him. Actual men would rather spend a minute picking roast beef from their teeth with a toothpick than watch any of that twaddle.

In El Salvador people turned to authoritarian leadership (Bukele) not because they felt unnecessary or unwanted, but because they feared for their lives from the chaos and anarchy (See: DSA Party, USA- formerly known as the Democratic Party).
As for AI. I am sure farriers felt the ground shifting underneath them as they watched the horseless carriages roll past their shop. And later they went and got jobs on the line building cars. Or auto parts. Or selling cars. Or insuring cars. Or transporting cars in large trucks. And on and on.
We have barely seen the tip of the new economy that AI will create. Do not bet against this. It is changing the world, and the world will move forward with it, no matter how high Bernie Sanders and AOC hold up their arms to stop it.

"Yay!" all the feminists said, and they did a group hug and a little dance.

As usual, The New Yorker is barking up the wrong tree. In this country, the totalitarians are almost entirely composed of college-educated women who are absolutely convinced of their importance and consequence. As for Arendt, she invented the term, and therefore believed she had a certain right to define it. Times and words change, however. Today, tyranny grows out of ill-disciplined childhoods. Research the biographies of every shrieking, green-haired, septum-pierced harridan who ever overturned a Turning Point literature table, and you'll find a parent who thought she could reason with a four-year-old.

I always thought that it could take the job of the programmers we gave the “scut work” assignments to, then I began to accept that my top guys were probably going to have to be prompt engineers, but *my job*? Never. I talked to executives and engineers and techs and worked out solutions to their problems, then broke the work into pieces and handed it out. But in the discussion I realized that I was just one more middleman who could be “disintermediated” despite the decades that I had spent learning an industry and software development.

I am just glad that I got out when I did.

Well, we do have a large mass of women with college credentials, life crushing student loan debt with majors/concentrations in women's studies, etc.

That is the definition of unnecessary and unwanted.

More importantly, the colleges spent time and effort to undermine their ability to become educated in the real sense of discipline of intellect, regulation of emotions and establishment of objective principles.

And AI is going to wipe out all these "copy of the professor" majors. But while women are the 30% more women in college than men, the men still enroll and succeed in hard STEM, the problem solving majors at massive majorities over women.

What Arendt may have been referring to was the experience of mass unemployment during the depression of the 1930s. She may not be talking about satisfying emotional needs, but about the bedrock reality that society goes on without one. Whether one is appreciated or not may be important, but getting enough to live on is essential.

Beyond that, though, I wouldn't just dismiss appreciation and recognition as factors in politics and social life. People who don't like those words express the need and its frustration in other terms.

Where they are fully in charge, little will be produced and wealth will begin to evaporate.“

The big problem that I see in the future is that we are becoming rich enough that we are facing the real possibility of a Universal Basic Income, where working for a living is no longer necessary. What do you do to make your life seem important, if all of your basic needs are met by society, without the need for work? We know one thing, and Thats engaging in violent protests, etc.

One thing that should make your life meaningful is having and raising kids. My daughter is facing a second kid in January, already stressing over her first, who is 2 1/2. Luckily they can afford daycare. And raising kids adds significantly to the meaning of their lives. But we have a whole generation of women taught that men are not worth it. But without a father helping raise the kids, single mothers fail in raising their kids far more often than intact two parent marriages. Day care very often doesn’t help in many cases, because it is primarily staffed by other women.

At one level, we are faced with hiring a lot of women in DEI and HR positions, just to keep them from protesting violently. Remember Renee Goode and her partner? They were indicative of that problem. But these types of positions are innately counter productive. The more of these positions you have in a company, the less efficient it is. Just look at Twitter/X, which quickly became profitable when most of the women, doing non-productive jobs (mainly there censoring out non-leftist discourse), were canned.

What I see there is possibly a time when meaningful jobs are at a premium. With UBI, you can get a meaningful job, if you have the right connections. And maybe more women will take up their traditional role as mothers in a heterosexual marriage.

My partner was pushed hard by insiders to engage in showy, lucrative careers (notably as an actress by several famous actors, and as a NY model by one of the top modeling agencies in the country). She declined, in order to raise her kids. No regrets. Hand made food, shuttling them to activities, hosting parties to keep them, as teenagers off the street. Etc. it was often hard work, but has three high performing children, six grandchildren, and now a great grandchild.
