"Julia Warhola was born Julia Zavacky on November 17, 1892, in Mikova, in the former Czechoslovakia."

"Initially, she didn't want to marry Andy's father, the first Andy -- Andrej, born November 28, 1889, also in Mikova. Her father beat her into accepting the proposal; she was further persuaded by candy that Andrej offered. When interviewed by Esquire in the late 1960s, she said, 'My Daddy beat me, beat me to marry him.... I cry. I no know. Andy visit again. He brings me candy. I no have candy. He brings me candy, wonderful candy. And for this candy, I marry him.' Candy, trauma: these were the alpha of Julia's marriage and the omega of her son's art. Julia loved candy, and so did little Andy.... In his fanciful The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again)... he recounts that his mother gave him candy bars as reward for every page completed in a coloring book.... Tom Wolfe reports Andy refusing food at society dinner parties and declaring, 'Oh, I only eat candy'...."

From "Andy Warhol" by Wayne Koestenbaum, a book excerpt published in the NYT on September 16, 2001.

I ran across that this morning because, eating candy, I was researching the accuracy of a quote I'd long remembered, "I only eat candy."

Ann: Did you buy your candy at the new city-owned grocery store in Madison? Or are you and Meade still patronizing the evil capitalist Hy-Vee and Whole Food Market?

Andrej (a.k.a. Ondrej).

'Koestenbaum's 2012 book The Anatomy of Harpo Marx was met with mixed reviews. Brian Dillon praised the book in Sight and Sound as "charming and rigorous" and lauded the book in Frieze as an "excellent example of a kind of delirious scholarship." Writing in the San Francisco Chronicle, Saul Austerlitz suggested that Koestenbaum "sexualizes Harpo beyond all recognition, creating a figure about whom the author can say, in all seriousness, that 'courtesy of the anus, we can imagine, Marxist-style, a path away from family and state.'" Joe Queenan wrote that Koestenbaum "peppers his story with just enough tidbits of fascinating information that readers may fleetingly overlook the fact that his theories are barmy."'

Koestenbaum was the guy with the see-through plastic briefcase. An experiment in transparency. It didn't catch on.

Andy Warhol is one of those many people who were very famous fifty year ago, are sort of famous now, and will be completely forgotten fifty years from now.

Money Manger, maybe in the future, everyone will have 50 years of fame. Candy (Darling) came from out on the (Long) Island. Not sung by the Dandy Warhols.

I genuinely don't eve know what Hy-Vee is. I shop at Whole Foods and just get in and out as fast as I can. I don't like shopping and I don't think anyone goes to that City Market. Meade goes to the Farmer's Market and wants to go to Grandad's Farmstop (https://www.grandadsfarmstop.com) but I find things like that too tedious. I'm overcome with ennui when entering the fresh fruit and vegetables part of the store, and it's downhill from there. I grab the few items I can tolerate — "sweetest batch" blueberries, apples, lettuce — and move on to the less-than-10 other items I need and leave as fast as possible. I am not a shopper. I'm attracted to Andy's idea of only candy. I like the purity and simplification.

There was no Czechoslovakia in 1892. She was born in a place called Slovakia, then and now.

But NYT, amirite?

Wow somebody wrote a biography of Agent W from Men In Black?

There are three Hy-Vee's in Madison.

They are out of Iowa. They have Fuel Saver points that are handed out based upon how many points the Huskers score. Inflation fighters!

How times have changed. Announcing you only eat candy would be met with more disapproval nowadays than admitting you enjoy threesomes.

One of my law school buddies has a brother who managed a Hy-Vee in Omaha. Hy-Vee has an ESOP. His brother is now retired and is a millionaire thanks to the ESOP.

The Ukranians knocked out two Russian data centers and a huge number of bot farms dried up like Oklahoma in the Thirties and blew away. Only real people are commenting. IEEE may be loading up a truck and heading for California - figuratively speaking. Luck.

Seems like it would have been healthier to eat the soup and paint the candy. About the same artistic value either way.

Trader Joe's has a pretty good selection of candy, I find - probably better than Whole Foods. I particularly like their dark chocolate-covered caramels, especially because they don't feel compelled to coat them with salt like the rest of those philistines. Pop'em in the fridge and they get nice and chewy.

It's a good thing we don't have one that's close.

The 1968 movie 'Candy' had a lot of stars in it and is a fond memory of my misspent youth.

It was bad, but not bad enough to be good.

More like the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Czechoslovakia didn't exist in 1893 and only appeared on the map in 1918 after Austria-Hungary fell. I don't know why you'd choose a country that didn't exist at the time and doesn't exist now as a reference.

Shopping for and buying food is the beginning of the process of consuming food.

If you have no sense of smell then you have a minimized ability to enjoy that consumption.

Thus the shopping loses the small pleasure it normally provides in the form of anticipation of a flavorful reinforcement of the behavior and the reluctant shopper experiences the process as boredom.

Or, you're just a snob. I'm going with the anosia explanation to avoid any blowback.

Rabel said...

And by "anticipation of a flavorful reinforcement" I mean that faint hope and the salivation it generates that this time, this time dammit, the peaches will be great unlike the last 4 times.

HT to the late, great Chip Ahoy for the peach statistics.

Andy Warhol's ethnic background was Carpatho-Rusyn.

From https://warholstars.org/nowhere/andy_warhol_p3.html --

"Elaine Rusinko: ... the Warholas would have said that they spoke po-nashomu (in our way), without, perhaps even recognizing their speech as a distinct language. The Rusyn language was codified in Slovakia only as recently as 1995. In the early twentieth century the vernacular of Miková would have had admixtures of the Šariš and Zemplén dialects of Slovak, and because the area was part of the Hungarian kingdom, Warhol's parents were educated in schools that used the Latin alphabet in Hungarian transcription... Family members claim that until her death, Andy spoke with his mother in Rusyn... acquaintances remember him communicating with his mother in her language, which they called 'Czech'... In The Philosophy of Andy Warhol... Andy refers to his mother's 'thick Czechoslovakian accent' and the 'Czech' ghetto' where he lived. However, at the end of his life, when he came face to face with the real Czech language, Warhol came to question his life-long identification as Czech. In 1986, Andy met the Czech model Paulina Porizkova (Pavlína Pořízková) and her mother. He commented in his diary, 'I guess I'm not really Czech, because I didn't understand it when they were talking.' (ER16-17)"
