"The marble front remained shrouded in white- and blue-striped tarps, with no clear answer on when they would be removed."

I'm reading "At the Kennedy Center, a Name Change Shrouded in Uncertainty/President Trump’s name was removed from the arts institution’s facade overnight on Saturday. Many questions remain, including whether or not it stays off" (NYT).
“I was hoping for a reveal, honestly,” said Katy Bigge, a student at Rutgers University who was visiting Washington with her parents. Her father, Philip Bigge, was squatting on the ground, peering through a crack between the tarp and the building’s front to try to make certain that Mr. Trump’s name was gone. He could not be sure, but he thought he had detected that the letters were missing.

It seems that Trump's name is gone, but now you can't see that it's gone. It's "shrouded." Maybe some day, long in the future, when Trump is worshipped for his grand triumphs, the shroud will be on display, like the Shroud of Turin.

Bizarre that they’d rather the Center remain in ruin than undergo a two year renovation under Trump’s watch. Decline truly is the choice.

Maybe David Copperfield will make the whole building disappear

Philip has issues which means Katy probably does too…

The center's closure was announced after many prominent artists canceled their planned appearances, saying that the Trump administration had politicized the arts. The Washington National Opera, which had been a resident organization at the Kennedy Center, left its home there last month, citing a "financially challenging relationship" under the center's current leadership; The Washington Post, in an analysis of Kennedy Center ticket sales last October, reported that ticket sales had plummeted since Trump became the center's chairman – even before the complex's board renamed the venue as the Trump-Kennedy Center in December.

Trump says he’s "like, really smart, a very stable genius." But his ego always gets in the way of his behavior inside his stall. During his first term, he didn't give a shit about the Kennedy Center, which must not have needed repair in 2016.

No one gives a shit about the Kennedy Center except people in D.C. Knock it down. It’s an eyesore

…artists always politicize the arts. Most of the time it’s why artists art. Take a survey course…really the ire is a testament to how significant the progress is. They are inadvertently promoting his greatness beyond his level of contribution…

I hate those sashes and medals they hang on honorees. Makes us US look like Parador or something…

It is just so bizarre watching someone say something so obviously backwards and stupid to justify his hatred and attempts to kill his political opposition.

We will never have a free high trust society with people like this in it.

OMG, @rehajm, big points for referencing a now-obscure, Richard Dreyfuss flick from the late '80s. Boy, did that provoke flashbacks! But I recall it being a pretty dreadful movie, no offense intended.

Lord, does anyone even remember Dreyfuss anymore? I don't recall a reference to him in years...maybe not this century.

Anyway, /digression.

I do care about the Kennedy Center, with all its flaws. But whatever happens, it really doesn't have to do with my everyday life, as pointed out by another commenter, so I'm just not all het up about it either way. I'm trying not to focus on anything over which I have zero control.

The Kennedy Center was indeed a "run down dump" a few years back. I'm shocked that Trump tried to put his name on it before being renovated. It had ugly, cheap 1970s economy woodwork, threadbare seats, and dirty, cracked walls that didn't match the "Trump Tower" image at all.

Which is pretty much everything, outside of my own immediate life.

If politics should be removed, let’s return it to the National Cultural Center. Who could possibly object to that?

Bushman of the Kohlrabi said...

Maybe call it the Robert F Kennedy Center as a compromise?

Dreyfus is quite an appropriate reference in a discussion about politicizing the arts.

Artists and athletes need to keep their political nonsense to themselves. Ironically it’s almost always leftists who want to make everything political as they strive for totalitarianism.

rcommal said...

I'm good with reducing the politicization. But if we're going to call out performing artists on that front, can we do that too with business men? The ultra wealthy? Athletes? Religious leaders? Etc. And does this apply to every single person and endeavor across the entire political spectrum?

I mean, is it everybody ought to stay in their own lane? Or just tribes people don't agree with or dislike?

Did you know that you can go onto the Kennedy Center website and view all the performances (including their programs, I believe) for the past five years? (I've wish the archives were available going all the way back). You can review who was performing. Most of it doesn't seem especially subversive to me. I wonder if we're latching onto a few instances and losing sight of the bigger picture. It's a question I always ask of myself, and I guess I'm interested if in how widespread that its.

It's true that if you don't live in the DC area, you're likely never to go to the Kennedy Center. But you also probably don't go to the Smithsonian, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, etc. etc. etc. etc. either.

Our national park system offers glories, and many people use them regularly. But far more do not.

I mean, I could go on, but why do so? I hope this makes my point for consideration.

I wonder what Katie's daddy would think if she was the one trapped to die in Ted Kennedy's car -- or the secretary double-humped by JFK and RFK in the White House pool.

I bet he'd brag about it.

This is how it ends when courts run the country. There is an injunction against everything so nothing can be done but taking off a few letters here and there.

They redacted Trump’s name from the Epstein Files, then put it on the Kennedy Center—only to redact it once again.

So Mr. Bigge is missing the comfort of confirming that Trump's name has been removed, even trying to separate the tarps so he can peek through. To make sure Trump's name has been taken down. At the closed, soon-to-be derelict building, where a judge has stopped the planned renovation. Shaking my head. I wonder if they went out of their way to not walk past the reflecting pool, which is around the corner, unless there was an opportunity to spot algae.

And to some, artists cancelling their contracted performances 'because Trump' is a mature, legitimate act, and a judge shutting down a construction project 'because Trump' is a mature, legitimate judicial responsibility - but renovating a decaying public building is not. And we are told that this is to be perceived as apolitical.

The Trump lettering removed from the Kennedy Center left an image on the wall as if created by a burst of energy.
