Did Epstein write that "suicide note"?

You can read the text at the NYT article, "Purported Epstein Suicide Note Is Released/A federal judge released the note, which Jeffrey Epstein’s former cellmate said he found in a graphic novel. The New York Times has not authenticated that Mr. Epstein wrote it."

"They investigated me for month — FOUND NOTHING!!!” the note begins, adding that the result was charges going back many years.

“It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye,” the note continued.

“Watcha want me to do — Bust out cryin!!” the note reads.

“NO FUN," it concludes, with those words underlined. “NOT WORTH IT!!”

My initial take, on that text alone, was that doesn't sound like what he would write, but then what do I know about the writing style of Jeffrey Epstein? I haven't been reading his emails, and the NYT points to a 2016 email of his that says "whtchoo want me todo -- bust out cryin" — and what can I say? Do you want to talk about the "Watcha"/"whtchoo" discrepancy? Are you struck by the word-for-word repetition of a 7 or 8 word phrase? But which way are you struck? Are you thinking, yes, that's Jeffrey or somebody swiped a phrase to make it look like Jeffrey? But who?

ADDED: Why can't we be told which graphic novel Jeffrey Epstein had there in his cell to read? I invited Grok to guess — remember, it was the summer of 2019 — and this is what I got:

Mister Miracle (Tom King & Mitch Gerads) — #5 on 2019 sales charts. A New Gods story that’s really about depression, suicide, escape attempts, PTSD, and existential dread in a prison-like life. The thematic overlap with Epstein’s July 2019 situation is almost too on-the-nose.

The Boys (Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson, Vol. 1 or early collections) — The Amazon Prime TV adaptation premiered July 26, 2019—just days after Epstein’s incident. Brutal satire of corrupt, abusive celebrity “supes” who are really rich, predatory elites. Dark, hyper-violent, sexually explicit—matches his known edgy tastes perfectly.
Lost Girls (Alan Moore & Melinda Gebbie) — Moore’s erotic graphic novel reimagining Alice, Wendy, and Dorothy in explicit adult (often taboo) scenarios. Direct literary tie-in to Lolita (which appeared on Epstein’s known reading list). Edgy, controversial, and sexually charged—fits his documented interests uncomfortably well.
Watchmen (Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons) — The #1 bestselling graphic novel of 2019 (and a perennial bestseller). HBO series aired that year. Intellectual, morally gray take on flawed “heroes,” government conspiracies, sexual violence, and elite corruption. Perfect intellectual fit for a wealthy, cynical reader like Epstein.

AND: The note was (supposedly) found in a book and might have arrived with the book. How did that book get into Jeffrey Epstein's cell?

PLUS: I didn't list all the "graphic novels" — they're really more properly called "comic books," as Alan Moore says — that Grok suggested. I left 2 off because they're "Batman" books, and I just thought didn't picture a 66-year-old man reading "Batman."

I needled Grok: "What kind of 66-year-old man would read Batman stories?!"

Answer: "A very normal kind — and often a highly intelligent, successful, or introspective one."

Reading Batman (or graphic novels in general) at 66 isn't quirky or juvenile for many men in Epstein's demographic. It's mainstream adult entertainment with deep appeal.... Batman stands out among superheroes because he's human — no superpowers, just extreme wealth, intellect, trauma-driven discipline, and a relentless quest for control/justice in a corrupt world.... In short, a 66-year-old reading Batman stories is likely someone who values:

  • Escapism with substance — Complex plots over pure fluff.
  • Power fantasies — A self-made (or self-reinvented) vigilante who bends rules.
  • Nostalgia or ongoing hobby — Many lifelong readers continue into old age.
  • Intellectual/literary angle — Treating graphic novels as serious literature (Alan Moore, Frank Miller, etc., elevated the medium).

No. The ex-cop cell mate is 4-time murderer serving 4 life terms who claimed to have found the note in a book shortly after Epsteins "first" suicide attempt. He's a huge musclebound dude with nothing to lose but everything to gain by doing favors for his jailers. He also strangled his first victim with a garrot exactly like Epstein's suffocation. The other 3 murders were back of the head shots to eliminate his witnesses to the drug deal gone wrong.

A very believable witness!

Epstein was murdered. Epstein committed suicide. Either could be possible. If was murdered it was probably by the Mossad. Israel loves to assassinate anyone they don't like and the were responsible for the death of mossad agent Robert Maxwell. That they would kill Epstein to shut him up wouldn't surprise me.

OTOH, maybe Epstein - as the note said - didn't want to live for years in prison. Quite a comedown from fucking underage girls on a luxury Carribean Island while working with your powerful friends to push your agenda. He was 66 too.

Somebody bribed somebody either to let Epstein commit suicide or murder him. That William Barr was AG and Wray was FBI director at the time doesn't shock me. Man, Trump sure can pick 'em.

But whenever anything touches Israel, the Establishment goes into cover-up mode. Did you know that it took 20 years for the Press to disclose the fact that Israel has nukes. In fact, Israel still officially claims they don't have nuclear weapons. Crazy.

We also just learned that Netenyahu told Clinton in the 90s that they had tapes of him getting a Lewinsky in the White House. And, in another case, that the CIA agent keeping tabs on Oswald was Jewish - that was redacted from the papers for 50 years.

Everytime it negatively effects Israel we get obfuscation. So the Epstein Coverup is just another example.

Note to self: be sure and leave my suicide note in a random graphic novel to be made public long after my death.
And I suppose I should have known this, but “he had a cell mate”? I’m guessing there’s a long backstory as to where the cell mate was when he killed himself and didn’t notice him making any preparations for the event.
In any event it would appear that there aren’t yet a sufficient number of people who believe he actually killed himself. If that’s the case this note isn’t going to put the story to bed.

The Epstein affair has weird parallels with the Stavinky Scandal in France in 1934. Stavinky was a conman and fraudster involved with everyone in the French Establishment. He was about to be brought to trial and then was found dead.

From Wikipedia:

"At the risk of exposure in December 1933, Stavisky fled. On 8 January 1934, the police found him in a chalet in Chamonix; he was dead from a gunshot wound. Stavisky was officially determined to have committed suicide, but there was a persistent speculation that police officers had killed him. Fourteen Parisian newspapers reported his death as a suicide, but eight did not. The distance that the bullet had travelled caused the newspaper Le Canard enchaîné to propose sarcastically that Stavisky had "a long arm".

"After Stavisky's death, details about his long criminal history, his relations with the French establishment and his controversial death became public. His involvement with so many ministers caused the resignation of Prime Minister Camille Chautemps with accusations from the right-wing opposition that he and his police had killed Stavisky" intentionally to protect influential people.

Mister Miracle - Fantastic book. I wouldn't have expected something so fresh from the New Gods storyline at this point. If you can't stand to read super hero stories, former CIA officer Tom King's brutally realistic "The Sheriff of Babylon", set in US occupied Iraq is also great.
The Boys - Haven't read it. Everything I hear about it makes it sound tediously political.
Lost Girls - Alan Moore openly writing pornography. Erudite pornography, but still. Interesting, but I'd only recommend it if you really think that sounds like your kind of book.
Watchmen - Possibly the best graphic novel/comic book ever created. It is, among other things, a perceptive look at what the consumption of superhero narratives says about society or does to society. Coming off a decade or two of pop culture being absolutely dominated by super hero narratives, it's never been more relevant.
Batman - I've read a lot of Batman. (I'm not quite 66.) Recently though, all of the highly praised Batman stories have been so relentlessly grim and repetitive that I've pretty much given up on them. Grant Morrison's seven year run from a bit more than a decade ago was the last one I really enjoyed. It was head spinningly complicated, though. So I wouldn't recommend it for a comics novice.

Ann Althouse said...

On the question whose book it was — Epstein's or the cellmate's, the line in the NYT is: "[The cellmate] told The Times in recent phone interviews from a California prison that he found the note in a graphic novel after Mr. Epstein was taken out of their cell after the apparent suicide attempt."

The NYT didn't see an ambiguity. I completely pictured the note being in Epstein's own book, but now that you mention it, Epstein might have tried to pass it to the cellmate by sticking it in his book.

How did other's read it? Consider that the NYT didn't see reason to specify.

I'm sticking to my reading of it.

Peachy said...

Why is the cellmate now in CA?

Ann Althouse said...

If the cellmate, Tartaglione, is part of a scheme and the note is fake, what would he be more likely to say?

I guess it's hard to picture him rifling though Epstein's book, looking for what? Something to read? Money? Clues?

No, he's just going back to his own "graphic novel."

Hey, why would this guy — convicted of murdering 4 people — be calling his comic books "graphic novels"? Who uses that term? Is the NYT changing to that term, perhaps because it was more of an educated person's reading material. One more sign the book was Epstein's.

narciso said...

Watchmen because rorschach is trapped in prison

Ann Althouse said...

I think if Epstein were really committing suicide, he's leave the note with his things, not pass it to Tartaglione. I don't think he trusted Tartaglione.

I think it's more likely that Tartaglione coerced him to write a dictated note and give it to him. That's one more piece of evidence that Tartaglione killed Epstein: Tartaglione built a cover story by manufacturing evidence of suicide.

Ficta said...

The term "graphic novel" is used all the time. It's often used to distinguish the physical format of the book. If it has a spine (i.e. it's a trade paperback), rather than being stapled, magazine style, it's frequently called a graphic novel, even if it's just a bound collection of several months of a monthly comic and not a self-contained novel. Although 12-issue series that tell a single self contained story and then are published as "graphic novels" are also common.

Howard said...

So they left the safe, and when they came back hours (or the next day) later, all the DVD's were gone. Or at least that's their story.

Comic books became "graphic novels" when the buyers got old and started collecting them. That happened generations ago -- see the price history of Superman #1. Also, films such as the ancient Greek "300" were based on recent illustrated versions of prior history books. Standard text was replaced with matching imagery, and not sci-fi or fantasy content. It's not fair to call such content a "comic book" in the mainstream sense.

The Japanese (and to an extent Marvel) release a lot of serious content with images.

Quote from Alan Moore:"By calling them graphic novels — which was a term that I hated, because they're not particularly graphic and they're certainly not novels. Usually they're 12 issues of She-Hulk stapled together. That is not a novel."

He says he prefers "comics" or "comic books" and that's what he calls what he writes.

I believe there are many other respected comics people who reject "graphic novel" as pretentious and inappropriately dismissive of comics.
