"So, ever since the fight at Thanksgiving, my daughter doesn't speak to me."

'This is the worst day of my life," was a pretty funny and incisive line.

Also are therapists really $500 an hour? That is some pricey talk. Is this another example of how as people become more and more atomized and we have more and more new economy things the GDP number goes up but the actual value in society isn't really increasing?

The guy on the couch turned in to what looked like a rabbit with lightening coming out of his ass for a second there. What's up with that?

Did they try to make the therapist sound, at points, like Jordan Peterson?

I wonder if the compression blanket is like a yoga mat.

Therapy, the most lucrative scam there is -- or was, until the Somalis landed.

And how does that make you feel?

Pretty funny. I was sucked in at the beginning because I could relate with the dude, I’m estranged from my daughter. The ending is priceless though.

AI says:

Psychotherapy typically costs between $100 and $250 per 45–60 minute session in the U.S., while psychoanalysis often costs $80–$275+ per session but requires higher frequency (often 3–5 times per week).

Conceivably, one could be paying $500 a week for psychoanalysis. AI also says that a dollar in 1965 would have the purchasing power of $10 today, so if you were paying $100 a week for psychoanalysis then, $500 might be a bargain now.

Some people ended up raising terrible children, sometimes through no fault of their own, it's ok and even healthy not to talk to them.

Fits my picture of psychobabble therapy.

Non-directive therapist, another job that AI puts at risk.

Right about now, I feel pissed!

Pretty much sums it up.

therapy can also be quite validating, with zero "how do you feel" uncertainty.

I took a psychology class at a Jesuit college back in the ‘70’s called Rational Self Counseling (RSC). The gist of it was: our feelings about things that happen to us, are in our control. We decide how to respond to stimuli, even though it seems that the outside force (spouse, boss, stranger on the subway, etc.) is dictating your response and therefore your reaction is “caused” by them. For example, “My boss reprimanded me and that made me start smoking again.” By training yourself to reflect on the tenuousness of the link between the trigger and your reaction to that trigger, you realize that there is no direct cause and effect. Rather, it’s an action and then one reaction out of many possible reactions - all of which you control.
Thus the question in the video: “And how does that make you feel?” seems to presuppose cause and effect. Rational Self Counseling doesn’t deny the feeling, it just allows you to realize that there may be other, more helpful reactions to the same trigger. It’s not easy to practice RSC, given how instantaneous an emotional reaction can be, but thoughtful reflection after the fact can help prevent damaging downstream behavior.
I’ve been a daily reader of this blog since 2004 and this is the first time I’ve published a comment. Thank you, Ann for all those years of stimulation and enjoyment.

Thanks for reading and also for writing!

This is pathetic. An obvious joke and a little too long even at 25 seconds or whatever it was!

Movies are equally overrated. Forrest Gump is rated 8.8 on Imdb. And all the current releases are in the 7s, 6s, and 5s. That must mean they are unwatchable by human intelligence.
