"I presented the President of the United States the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize as a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom."

That's María Corina Machado, who had the power to make a gift of the object, the medal, but cannot cause Trump to become the prize-winner.

Presumably, she did not give him any of the money — about $1 million — that came with the award. That money means much more to her than to our billionaire President, but more important, visitors to the President can't be handing over piles of money. And she wants something from him. She wants a lot.

He wanted something too, the Nobel Prize, and now he's in the ambiguous position of sort of having it. You just have the medal. It's like Putin's Super Bowl ring.

What do you have when you have the token of winning and you did not win? It's not the token of winning with respect to you, so what is it?

I'd say the answer can be found in the full text of what Machado said after the meeting. This has some historical heft that is missing from the CBS report above: "I presented the president of the United States the medal … the Nobel Peace Prize, and I told him, 'Listen to this, 200 years ago, General Lafayette gave Simón Bolívar a medal with George Washington's face on it' as a symbol of the partnership between the people of the U.S. and the people of Venezuela and their shared fight for freedom against tyranny. And 200 years in history, the people of Bolívar are giving back to the heir of Washington a medal—in this case, the medal of the Nobel Peace Prize—as a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom / to our freedom."

Trump's possession of the medal cannot represent recognition by the Nobel Committee but it does represent recognition by Machado, purporting to represent the people of Bolívar. Who does the Nobel Committee purport to represent?

Emil Zátopek, the legendary Czech distance runner, gave one of his Olympic gold medals (specifically his 10,000m gold from the 1952 Helsinki Games) to Australian runner Ron Clarke. This generous act happened in 1966, when Clarke visited Prague for a race and stayed with Zátopek. Clarke, despite setting numerous world records in the 1960s, never won an Olympic gold medal himself (he was notably affected by high altitude at the 1968 Mexico City Games). Zátopek, recognizing Clarke's talent and "bad luck" in major championships, presented him with a small parcel at the airport as a parting gift. He told Clarke to open it later, with the inscription inside reading something along the lines of "Not out of friendship but because you deserve it". Clarke only unwrapped it once the plane was airborne—revealing the precious medal—and was deeply moved by the gesture.

If Trump can engineer a peaceful transfer of power in Venezuela, he would certainly deserve the Nobel. It's possible.....Less likely, but still possible is the end of the Mullah's power in Iran. If unlike Iraq, Libya, and Syria there's a transfer of power without an endless civil war, that would be quite something. If that happens, not only should Trump receive the reward but, as a gesture of humility and good will, the individual members of the Nobel Committee should bow down and kiss Trump's ass before the award ceremony.

Donald Trump’s first Venezuela oil sale deal goes to megadonor’s company ~ FT

"Senior Vitol trader met US president at White House last week and gave millions of dollars to his re-election campaign"

"The first US sale of Venezuelan crude was to a company whose senior oil trader donated to Donald Trump’s reelection campaign and attended a White House meeting with the president last week.

John Addison, a senior trader at Vitol who donated about $6mn to political action committees backing Trump’s re-election campaign, was involved in his company’s efforts to secure a $250mn deal for Venezuelan crude.

Vitol said Addison’s donations, which made the senior trader one of the most generous Trump supporters in Houston, were made in a private capacity."

She places her country’s welfare above everything while Trump places the satisfaction of his ego above everything.

The first clause may be true - her being awarded the Peace Prize was, I confess, the first I'd heard of her.

But the second? For a person supposedly driven only by ego and narcissism, Trump sure is pursuing his aim in the hardest way possible. It's easy to get people to like you. It's only slightly more difficult to get them to respect you - if you only want them to respect what you say and don't care if they notice what you do (or believe they won't be paying attention to what you do, which seems often to be the case in politics). It would've been s simple matter for Trump to say the things he said during his campaign, get elected, and then "pivot," as they say - transform into the kind of President people like, who says things people respect. Instead Trump is doing the things that he believes - or at any rate (to throw his critics a bone) says he believes - will benefit the country long-term, despite their immediate cost - so far, that cost being realized especially in blows to his ego and desire to be admired.

Now, I am using "people" in the above para to refer specifically to the tastemakers of the US and generally the World Order, people who are uniformly on the political left, and to those who draw their world view from them. But if you were a person driven solely by ego and narcissism, wouldn't you want the tastemakers on your side? It would feel so good.

Remember, Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in his 8th month as President. At that time, he was dropping bombs on brown people in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He later invaded and killed the leader of Libya - resulting in now a thriving market in black slaves.

Grok: "In the widely reported 2017 footage and investigations of the Libyan "slave markets," the individuals being auctioned and sold were predominantly Black men from sub-Saharan Africa."

Machado got the prize because she struggled for freedom, not peace. I like the idea of a medal for people who struggle for freedom passed on from one to another at intervals - Lafayette to Bolivar to Machado to Trump to ...

Obviously anybody but Trump would have got the Peace Prize because he ended several conflicts and prevented several others. But the countries he helped were not European so peace among them doesn't count with the Norwegians.

Anyhow, maybe the Bolivarian Freedom prize, which is intermittently awarded by one freedom fighter to another, is better. An award between two people who respect each other for the risks each took, not an award from a committee mainly afraid of status risks.

Knut Hamsun gave his Nobel Prize for Literature medal, won in 1920, to Joseph Goebbels in 1943. One theory why he did so was to facilate a meeting with Hitler. Hamsun got his meeting with Hitler. Hitler wanted to talk about Hamsun's books. Hamsun wanted to complain about Terboven, the German in charge of Norway, and push for arrested Norwegian civilians to be released. Hitler got so angry that his translator stopped translating what Hamsun was saying. Afterwards, Hilter said that he never wanted to see that man again.

So, giving your Nobel prize away can help to get you a meeting, but it probalby won't change anyone's mind.

Perhaps it has nothing to do with feelings or self-esteem and everything to do with legitimate differences in aesthetics, which is funnier still because Donald really falls into the "garbage taste" category.

Among my favorite quotes is Bolivar's "Among the popular and representative systems of government I do not approve of the federal system: it is too perfect; and it requires virtues and political talents much superior to our own.”

Bolivar is often compared to Washington, but it's really not a fair comparison. Bolivar could not have done as one man for Latin America what Washington was able to do for America only as a consortium of thousands of men just like him. That's the fundamental difference. Latin America should have been so lucky, which they weren't.

“A Nobel Prize medal's value ranges from its intrinsic gold worth (around $10,000+) to millions at auction, depending heavily on the laureate's fame, with the record set by Dmitry Muratov's Peace Prize medal selling for $103.5 million, while James Watson's Medicine medal fetched $4.75 million, showing historical fame dramatically inflates market value beyond the materials.”

They want a stable Venezuela and the optics of working with Madero was untenable but working with Machado would be a gamble that they were not sure the leaders and military in Venezuela would accept. So they decided working with acting President Delcy Rodríguez was the best option. It's somewhat ironic given her left leaning credentials but it's practical at this moment.
