He died in prison, convicted of murder. But once: "With his trademark black beret and sunglasses, dexterous mind and imposing 6-foot-5 inch frame — 7 feet, with his Afro — he was a persuasive and charismatic figure to many, adept at rallying Black audiences to his cause while alarming many white listeners."
Other quotes in the article: "Black folk built America, and if it don’t come around, we’re gonna burn America down," "You’ve got to arm yourself. If you’re going to loot, loot yourself a gun store," and, referencing 5 days of rioting, “I don’t think you could articulate the sentiments of Black people any better than they just did in Detroit."
The NYT prints the full "n-word." Is it fit to print? I won't write it. But it is the second word of the 3-word title of the man's 1969 autobiography. The other 2 words are "Die."

So his title was an innocent German phrase, like “Die Bart Die”?
No ankle monitor needed.
How fitting that this criminal died in prison. Now only if George Floyd had died in prison; think of all the grief and death that would have been avoided.
Interesting that he changed his name.
I'd have gone with apple pie but what do I know?
*Mention* of a slur is vastly different than actually USING it to diminish and degrade others. I see no reason *not* to publish any slur in an appropriate context.
Good. Rot in hell. I guess NPR needs another Kill the Cops host and And Goddard needs another assault the children of dead cops commencement speaker.
Now spend three minutes on the people he killed and those he left behind. Would you like me to describe the horrific murder scenes to save you time? Shot in the head and the back, ambushed, hunting random innocent police.
Daniel Walker. Say his name. Say his wife's name. Maureen.
Academia is entirely to blame for his post-murder fame. Your people made him a cause and a hero. Your people gave him a platform. Anyone who has ever suscribed to NPR has blood on their hands. Any academician who watched their institution pimp him out should have said something. You did not.
Decent people can contribute to Maureen Faulkner's nonprorit to aid the victims of these academics and NPR-loving scum.
For the last hundred years, black political commentary and crime/actions have driven USA gun control efforts. This includes old-school "Saturday-night special" laws that stigmatized inexpensive handguns, carry restrictions that followed Black Panther protests and the like (e.g., armed visitors in California's state capitol building), and white billionaire Michael Bloomberg's "throw them against a wall and frisk 'em" comments.
Now, Glock has attempted to stave off gun control efforts because the Switch (an full-auto conversion device available/printable for a few dollars) is everywhere in black urban areas.
These gun control efforts were ALL led by (oligarchic and wealthy) Democrats. Bread and circuses for their black supporters. Carrots and sticks too. Pandering. Speaking out both sides of their mouths. Double dealing. ????
I hope Althouse doesn't start publishing the lyrics of rap songs or she'd be in a real quandary.
I read Eldridge Cleaver’s autobiography in high school. It was just the n word. He argued to his mom that people should not shy away from using the word because it would promote his book.

Using AI, I put together a Spotify playlist of high quality rap — intricate storytelling and vivid pictures of personal experiences or complex social issues — and refined it to exclude the "n-word."

Good riddance.
Regarding Hip Hop lyrical content. I once bought an Aesop Rock album because he was ranked as the artist with the largest vocabulary. Musically...ho hum to me...but he does use a lot of words.

That reflects my authentic reaction to this news.
I have to say, the days of H. Rap Brown seem more sane to me than what I see today. As nasty as those days were.
As a former Detroiter who lived in that area during the '67 riots, that city has never recovered from what was burned down. It wasn't just the buildings- it was the heart of the city. It is slowly now- just now- starting to show some shoots of green, some growth again. Here...58 years later.
And guess who suffered the most through all those years?
Be careful what you wish for.
Yes, it’s fit to print. All we have to do to remove its power to offend and hurt is stop treating it like a magic word. Print it, say it, shout it and people will stop caring about it.
Lenny Bruce explained all this over half a century ago and we’ve only gotten worse since.
A playlist? Fuck you.

I haven't heard the n-word used disparagingly. Everything's a mention not a use, or is in the rogue register. Failing to print the n-word is basically illiteracy.
It offends people who want to show virtue by being offended but who are too lazy to read.
He was a thug who took the name of the original slave masters the Arabs
I will report back when I finish my homework assignment of listening for n-word usage. At least the dog won't be able to eat my homework.
I don’t think "Black Americans built this country."
At least eldridge had an awakening for a time, thug life journal
Jim, Soul on Ice documents in detail how Cleaver practiced rape on black women them moved on to white women. This isn't about a fucking word -- nor the race of the victim, no matter what Cleaver wrote as an angry young man about the glory of raping white women. He later denounced raping both black and white women. Despite her stupidity, I hope your mother never got raped by any man. You parsing dolt.
I had to teach the book in grad school - positively.
All the people defending him here, including those who pretend they're just recording an historical era, should experience the horror of rape. No, Ann, I won't be listening to your littlemix tape. Are you becoming morally incontinent?
The men too. Let's start with Jim. You see, when you give into the rapist's mentality about sex or race, and worse, institunalize it bureauticatically, you are the klan.
Wilbur, you are right. I misremembered.
Tim McGuire, I read the Lenny Bruce routine about use of words. It sums up me feeling about usage.

@Spiros Papas: I don’t think "Black Americans built this country."
From the Spanish, French, and English colonial era through the Civil War, black labor supported the Confederate states. That economy was farm-driven, but then crushed by the war and many blacks moved north for jobs. The larger USA economy was always in the non-slave north (while the USA was a country).
The pre-USA colonial Spanish/Mexicans, the Chinese and the Japanese "built" much of California and west. Blacks had a marginal impact and limited presence even today.
All the talk about "building the USA" boils down to:
1. Vast numbers of white European small farmers setting up an agrarian society through the Civil War and ending only with industrialization circa the 1920s to 1930s (Great Depression).
2. Post-Civil War industrial mega projects including massive highways, dams, cities, and housing using machines (trains, tractors, trucks) rather than black labor. These were mostly white men trained to run the machines, while blacks continued as farm and urban service labor.

Y'all tucked in?
Here we go
Once upon a time not long ago
When people wore pajamas and lived life slow
When laws were stern and justice stood
And people were behavin' like they ought ta good
There lived a little boy who was misled
By another little boy and this is what he said
Me and you, Ty, we gonna make some cash
Robbin' old folks and makin' that dash
They did the job, money came with ease
But one couldn't stop, it's like he had a disease
He robbed another and another and a sista and her brotha
Tried to rob a man who was a d.t. undercover
The cop grabbed his arm, he started acting erratic
He said, keep still, boy, no need for static
Punched him in his belly and he gave him a slap
But little did he know the little boy was strapped
The kid pulled out a gun, he said, why did ya hit me?
The barrel was set straight for the cop's kidney
The cop got scared, the kid, he starts to figure
I'll do years if I pull this trigga
So he cold dashed and ran around the block
Cop radioes it to another lady cop
He ran by a tree, there he saw this sista
A shot for the head, he shot back, but he missed her
Looked around good and from expectations
So he decided he'd head for the subway stations
But she was coming and he made a left
He was runnin' top speed 'till he was outta breath
Knocked an old man down and swore he killed him (sorry)
Then he made his move to an abandoned building
Ran up the stairs up to the top floor
Opened up the door there, guess who he saw?
Dave the dope fiend shootin' dope
Who don't know the meaning of water nor soap
He said, I need bullets, hurry up, run!
The dope fiend brought back a spanking shotgun
He went outside, but there was cops all over
Then he dipped into a car, a stolen Nova
Raced up the block doing 83
Crashed into a tree near university
Escaped alive though the car was battered
Rat-a-tat-tatted and all the cops scattered
Ran out of bullets and still had static
Grabbed a pregnant lady and pulled out the automatic
Pointed at her head and he said the gun was full o' lead
He told the cops, back off or honey here's dead
Deep in his heart he knew he was wrong
So he let the lady go and he starts to run on
Sirens sounded, he seemed astounded
Before long the little boy got surrounded
He dropped the gun, so went the glory
And this is the way I have to end this story
He was only seventeen, in a madman's dream
The cops shot the kid, I still hear him scream
This ain't funny, so don't ya dare laugh
Just another case about the wrong path

No n-word, but clearly a product of the ghetto.
first song
Honestly, I'm not as bothered by the use or reference of the forbidden N-word as I am by the reflexive avoidance of discussion of black peoples' continuing acceptance of violence as a natural racial trait.
Like Temujin, I grew up in an area (South-Central L.A.) that experienced black riots. It's almost 60 years later and several generations of preferential (AA/DOJ) treatment later and yet nothing has materially changed. It's time to stop avoiding the necessary discussion. Particularly by those blacks who have benefitted and risen to a better standard.
Stop ignoring the R-word...Responsibility. Help your own people to rise to a better standard.
A day or two later, one of the secretaries, who I always flirted with, she said, "So, I hear you're not a racist, Taylor."
And I said, "Well, no, of course not. Racism is stupid."
And she said, "I'm a racist."
And I said, "You're a racist?"
And she might have said something racist then, I don't remember. Maybe she wanted to see what I would do. Anyway, she asked me, "Are you shocked?"
And we had a history of flirting. A lot of times, girls want to shock you with some bad thing she's done. If you shock people, you're kind of a bad ass. So I didn't want to reward her racism by telling her how shocking it was.
So I said, "No, I'm disappointed."
Nostalgic leftists weep.
I bought _From the Wrong Side: a paradoxical approach to psychology_ Adolf Guggenbulh-Craig because of the listed chapter heading "The Blessings of Violence."
It turned out so-so but the good chapter was "Myth and Reality of Sexual Abuse of Children" suggesting that the reaction of society is causing more harm than anything to victims.

Song 2 "Millie pulled a pistol on Santa" by De La Soul.
"If you will suck my soul
I will lick your funky emotions"
This is the stylin' for a title that sounds silly
But nothin' silly about the triflin' times of Millie
Millie a Brooklyn Queen originally from Philly
Complete with that accent that made her sound hillbilly
Around this time, the slammin' joint was "Milk is Chillin'"
But even cooler was my social worker Dillon
Yeah, I had a social worker 'cause I had some troubles
Anyone who'd riff on me, I'd pop their dome like bubbles
He'd bring me to his crib to watch my favorite races
That's how his daughter Millie became one of my favorite faces
She had the curves that made you wanna take chances
I mean on her, man, I'd love to make advances
I guess her father musta got the same feelin'
I mean, actually findin' his own daughter Millie appealing
At the time no one knew, but it was a shame
That Millie became a victim of the touchy-touchy game
(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
Yo, Millie, what's the problem? Lately, you've been buggin'
On your dookie earrings, someone must be tuggin'
You were a dancer who could always be found clubbin'
Now you're world-renowned with the frown you're luggin'
Come to think your face look stink when Dill's around you
He's your father, what done happen, did he ground you?
You shouldn't flip on him 'cause Dill is really cool
Matter of fact, the coolest elder in the school
He hooked up a trip to bring us all the Lacey
He volunteered to play old Santa Claus at Macy's
Child, ya got the best pops anyone could have
Dillon's cool, super hip, you should be glad
Yeah, it seemed that Santa's ways were parallel with Dillon
But when Millie and him got home, he was more of a villain
While she slept in, he crept inside her bedroom
And he would toss her and then would force her to give him headroom
Millie tried real hard to let this hell not happen
But when she'd fuss, he would just commence the slappin'
(Yo, Dillon, man, Millie's been out of school for a week, man, what's the deal?)
I guess he was givin' Millie's bruises time to heal
Of course, he told us she was sick and we believed him
And at the department store as Santa we would see 'em
And as he smiled, his own child was at home plottin'
How off the face of this earth she was gonna knock him
When I got home, I found she had tried to call me
My machine had kicked to her, "Hey, how ya doin'?" (Sorry)
I tried to call the honey, but her line was busy
I guess I'll head to Macy's and bug out on Dillon
I received a call from Missus Sick herself
I asked her how was she recoverin' her health
She said that what she had to ask would make it seem minute
She wanted to talk serious, I said, "go ahead, shoot"
She claimed I hit the combo dead upon the missile
Wanted to know if I could get a loaded pistol
That ain't a problem, but why would Millie need one?
She said she wanted her pops Dillon to heed one
Ran some style about him pushin' on her privates
Look, honey, I don't care if you kick five fits
There's no way that you can prove to me that Dill's flip
He might breathe a blunt, but ya jeans he wouldn't rip
You're just mad he's your overseer at school
Not nearly the same
That word like others in the lexicon which i wont spell out (shiuldnt be used)
Part two of 2nd
No need to play him out like he's someone cruel
She kicked that she would go get it from somewhere else
Yeah, whatever you say, go for ya self

(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
(Know that)
Macy's department store, the scene for Santa's kisses
And all the little brats demandin' all of their wishes
Time passes by as I wait for my younger brother
He asks his wish, I waste no time to return him back to mother
As I'm jettin', Millie floats in like a zombie
I ask her what's her problem, all she says is, "Where is he?"
I give a point, she pulls a pistol, people screamin'
She shouts to Dill, "He's off to Hell 'cause he's a demon!"
None of the kids could understand what was the cause
All they could see was a girl holdin' a pistol on Claus
Dillon pleaded mercy, said he didn't mean to
Do all the things that her mind could do nothing but cling to
Millie bucked him and with the quickness, it was over
No n-word but all ghetto too.
So his birth name was Rap and he changed it to Jamil, or vice versa?
Hubert Gerald (two thirds down) like the mumia cat
I met him once, and that is all I remember.
(Sigh) And a young woman is going to court for using the word in a playground, while defending her daughter.
Thus endeth the lesson

"Dexterous mind". Lol Sure.
Begley @05:49, 11/24/25
That sentiment is just wishful thinking Mr. Begley. If the George Floyd NPC character hadn’t existed it would have been necessary for the Blue Left to create him, and in fact they kind of did. The real George Floyd was a low-life street criminal who was then transmogrified by them into a race war martyr for their political benefit.

I just saw your comment on a post containing the n-word. Delete my previos post if the word used in verbatim lyrics violates your standard.

But both parties have to tango
Half an hour later, I'm driving in my BMW, and the kids see me and run out into the street. "Hey, can you give us a ride?" And I'm like, okay. And they all jump in my car. And there's not enough room, so she's sitting in somebody's lap. And I said, "No lap dancing." Which might have been a little racist. But that's what I said.
And this kid is leaning over, and I his pants are way too baggy, and I can see about half of his ass crack. So I said, "Just say no to crack." And then I said, "Do y'all know what that means?"
And the girl says, "Yes, Nancy Reagan, just say no to drugs. And crack is crack cocaine. Yes." And I'm thinking, okay, she's probably going to college in the future. And she's hanging out with the bad boys. And I said, "well, that's right, but it was a joke. Just say no to crack. Because his pants are falling down."
And I'm playing my music loud. I can't remember what the song was, but I wanted to hear the lyrics. So I said, "Be quiet, I want to hear this." And I cranked up the song.
And I drive the kids a couple of miles to a gas station, they want to buy cigarettes, I think. And several of them come back, and two of them are still in the store. So I have to get out of my car and go get them.
And when I open the door, the two guys run out of the store. And the guy at the cash register, Nigerian guy, I think, is mad. "Those guys didn't pay!" And I'm walking out with them, and I said, "What?"
And he said, "They didn't pay. They're drinking slurpees right out of the machine." He was mad.
And I said, "Okay. I don't know them. I just gave them a ride. How much do they owe?"
It was a few bucks, not much. So I paid it. And the Nigerian is happy, the white people waiting in line were happy, everybody is grinning at me. And I'm not happy, I'm a little aggravated.
So I go out to my car. And they asked me if there were any problems, and I said no, everything's fine. And I drove them back to my apartment complex. And one of the guys said, "Hey, can you drive us somewhere else?"
And I said, "Nope."
And he asked me again, "It's not too far, come on."
And I said, "I already said no, right? I'm not going to say it again."
And I dropped them off at my apartment complex. And I never saw any of those kids again. Don't know what happened to them. Some of them might end up in prison. Others might be astronauts. I have no idea what their lives will be like. But I had the distinct impression the boys need strong fathers and father figures. And it wasn't a race thing at all.
Always having to say "the n-word" is right up there with how you apparently can't say 'rape' or 'sexual assault" or "killed" or "suicide" etc. on YouTube. Infantile.
Well, he wasn't wrong about violence.
I apologize, Althouse, should have said "n word"
that was a good story, I thought

How would you teach Huckleberry Finn?
Serious question.
You would never read that book to students?
I consider it the greatest and most important work of fiction in the history of the USA.
Violence is how you prevent chaos everything since 2020 demonstrates this
But the Times is as obscene as that word, they dont want a civil society
Just don't loot the Pritzker's or the Walz house - OK? Wholesome white Virtue lives there!
I just finished my first draft of my new novel, Whodidit With a Colt .45?. And I have a chapter in there, that involves the Klan and a lynch attempt. And I had a little struggle. Do I use the word? Do I not use the word? How accurate do I want to be, historically? Can I express hate a different way? And how hateful do I want this book to be? And my answer was, not at all hateful. It's meant to be a light, fun read. So I didn't use much hateful rhetoric at all, and just focused on the masks, the whips, the nooses in the mob. And it worked well, I think.
In the 21st century, we worry about symbols. But in the 19th century, people worried about the real thing. Among other reasons, that's why Twain is such an important artist in American history.
I sympathize with English teachers who fight for Huck Finn in the 21st century. I believe it's one of the most censored works in the USA. And still the greatest novel we've produced.
If you are president and have an R after your name you can't even point out that treason carries a severe punishment without lefties getting the vapors and claiming they are threatened. But if you agitate on behalf of the left, not even really democrats just anything not right wing, then you can say anything. It's not insurrection to preach overthrowing the government.
Ain't the english language beee-you-tiful!
Of course it is fit to print - if you're discussing the word itself or if using it in a quote - and, oh yeah, if you're not a six year-old.
Use of the term "N-word" is one of the most juvenile things to have ever come down the pike.
Tina, I misremembered the author of the book I was referring to. I never read Soul on Ice, but when I lived in KCMO, our mayor was Cleaver’s relation, now he’s a Congressman and may soon be Gerrymandered out of office, and I never heard Eldridge’s book referred to. Thanks for the information.
I used to participate in the ALA's Banned Books events (I know, that's actually a misnomer, but work with me).
We would hold day-long readings of portions of banned (challenged, etc.) books in the library lobby, in thirty-minute chunks, reader's choice.
I recall doing a chapter from Slaughterhouse Five (the one ending in Pilgrim's capture), Final Exit (the Hemlock Society production), and Huck Finn.
My audiences were usually a few students and a lot of nice black church ladies of the library staff, who didn't blink at the recurring epithet.
How is "N-Word" any different from "Nigger" or "Negro" or "Nigra" or "Nigga"? Everyone knows what it means (but can ponder or prejudge what the writer or speaker means).
I guess it gives the user cover by declaring "I am not a racist" while describing something racial.
Will it be the last word in the "Elephant's Room"?
The "C Word" seems to be slipping through cracks in the walls with increasing freguency.
And, the so-called "F-Bomb" has become the preferred modifier of just about every word in the dictionary.
It seems to me that many people of African heritage are going to object to any word used by "others" to identify them as a group.
Am I a racist? If you've got an attitude, you bet your ass I am. It's up to you.
I'm not gonna ttell you I have a lot of black friends or some of my best friends or black.
I will tell you my BEST friend, my first two years of high schoo,l was black. We were inseparable (his family moved). I will tell you that on my best and worst days I owe most of the smiles on my face to wonderful black strangers encountered everywhere I go. OTOH, if you're wearing a "Black Lives Matter" t-shirt on your face...
The three most wonderful people who ever worked for me were a female Jew, a young homosexual guy and a young black guy who'd been taken-on as part of one of those "hire-the-hopeless' programs. Although in-tune with his peers circa 1970, he didn't have a bad-ass bone in his body. Nothing was expeced of him but instead of letting him vegetate harmlessly in the corner, I decided to give him harder and harder stuff to do and trusting him with stuff that could make us all look good or bad. That kid turned out to be a superstar and a joy to all around him.
Regardless of race, IQ, talent, beauty, nationality or sex, EVERYONE can be GREAT! Or not.
It would be interesting to do a poll of American blacks, with questions such as, "how many times have you been called the n-word in a disparaging manner by a non-black person?" and "how many times have you been subjected to violence by a non-black person?"
Of course there hasn't been a poll like this, because the left doesn't want to know the answer. But even if the poll shows near-zero occurrences of such abuse, they could still use it for 'tiger repellent' justification of their policies...CC, JSM
"With his...dexterous mind..."

Sad.
Monty Python explained the logic of banning the “n-word” in “The Life of Brian” when stoning anyone who used/mentioned “Jehova”...
Are there any women here?
(Soprano) No! No! (Basso profundo) No! No!
Inside every woman hides a fake beard and an expensive stoning stone.
How is it that NYT may use the forbidden word, yet hurl the first stone at anyone else who speaks or writes it, provided he is white? Blacks are famously immune from the n-word sanction, but what if the speaker was Thomas Sowell or Clarence Thomas, or just an anonymous black Trump supporter? Why, NYT would rush the front of the stoning line with their bag of gravel. Kill the blasphemer!
"he was a persuasive and charismatic figure to many, adept at rallying Black audiences to his cause while alarming many white listeners."
I'm sure the NYT's will write the same way about David Duke.
He served as the farthest rail of the Black Power movement, from which one could just barely see MLK.
Why did america ever have to listen to a violent killer? It reminds me of how Liberals/leftists pushed the black panthers and Malcomn X. In fact Hollywood liberals love the idea of black people killing rednecks, and they express that love by the movies they make. And their donations to these violent black organizations in the 60s and 70s.
Brando, for example, gave a ton of money to the panthers. He only quit because he went to some of their meetings and discovered they didn't need a "Great White Father" to lead them.
He murdered some people and died in prison. Considering his record, it's a pretty nice obit and, in my opinion, much nicer than he deserved. I'm sure he received some unfair treatment along the way, but it was nothing compared to the amount of pain he inflicted on those who happened to fall into his orbit. I'm pretty sure that he was only charged with a fraction of the crimes that he committed.

Not mood appropriate for the link. But the comment " dexterous mind and imposing 6-foot-5 inch frame — 7 feet, with his Afro" reminded me of this scene from Fletch:

"How is "N-Word" any different from ...".
I'll tell you how. Althouse has said that she prefer we not use it on her blog. What can I say, she's a superstitious old liberal white lady. Somewhere in the convolutions of her highly-educated and quite capable mind, lies unexamined the notion that using that particular word causes severe and lasting damage to some hapless person who does not deserve it. Anyway, the English language is certainly large enough that I can get by without one word, so .....
A while back, she seemed to be warming up to make a list. As I recall, there was a C-word, and an F-word, and some other letters I don't recall. She seems to have lost interest in that compilation.
BTW, the N-word can be found, uncapitalized and sans asterisks, at the OED online. Apparently, there was a time when its use was unremarkable.
There are alternate words
The Communists had no problem manipulating Blacks or White Women in the U.S. after WW2. Ralph Ellison saw through them. That’s about it.
'Cleaver wrote "Soul On Ice".'
My older sister left a copy around the house, so I started reading it. He was talking about how he raped black girls, to practice for when he got up the courage to rape white girls. He was a filthy fucking piece of shit, who should have been hung from a tree. Pretty much par for that particular course.
"Hard to understand how they could have “built this country”."
Pity they didn't do any of that building while they were in Africa.
"Blacks built this country". Yes, and so did oxen, horses, and mules. Do we owe them reparations too?
In the spring of 68 while attending a small liberal arts school said small liberal arts school invited Hubert Gerold Brown to speak to the student body. If I am recalling correctly attendance was mandatory but I may be misremembering. Anyway, if I recall Hubert's talk correctly it was one of the most hate filled violent diatribes against whites I had or have ever heard. He went on and on about how white women fantasized about being raped by a black man and how they all secretly longed for the experience. And it was downhill from there.
He hated white people, the police, Jews and America. No one should mourn his passing.
It's obvious, I guess, but it's worth noting, that with this quote, H. Rap Brown is rejecting Christianity, rejecting Martin Luther King Jr., and rejecting the Civil Rights movement.
So when leftists repeat stuff like this, they are proud that they are rejecting Christianity. In their mind, they always think of white people when they hear "Christianity." Think of Bill Maher at his most obnoxious, for instance.
That's when you remind them that Reverend King was a Christian. And he learned all his civil rights moves from the black church. It's obvious, from his cadence and the way he spoke, that he was a preacher. It's what gave him his strength and his power.
When anybody on the left starts spouting anti-Christian rhetoric, ask them what they think of Martin Luther King Jr. Was he wasting his time in seminary and prayer? Or was that helpful?
Plant that seed.
He was a low rent thug who inspired many to antisocial brhavior
