UPDATE 2: CNN: "The FBI believes it has identified the suspect, multiple law enforcement officials briefed on the matter tell CNN. The initial identification matches a man from Washington state who appears to have immigrated from Afghanistan in August 2021, they said."

Someone on Twitter reported that 24 people have been murdered in D.C. since the National Guard arrived, not counting these two, and that the number for the same period last year was 61. Assuming this is true, commenters who says that the deployment is a "snipe hunt", or that it makes "little sense" are disgusting swine. Saving roughly 37 lives is in fact a very good thing.
Then again, the "little sense" poster is the same 'jim3501' who wrote in the turkey thread of Melania's "mission to get Ukraine to release all the children kidnapped from Russia". I pointed out that there are no such children, but that Russia has kidnapped tens of thousands of Ukrainian children. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, suggesting that perhaps he'd misspoken and inadvertently reversed his meaning. No reply there, and it seems clear now that he's just a liar.

Just for perspective, my European capital city, Madrid, has 33 murders a year (2023, last available), out of a population of 3.4 million (Comunidad de Madrid). Or 9,7 per million.
Washington DC with a population of 0.7 million had 173 homicides in 2024. Or 274 per million.
Washington DC is therefore 25 times as dangerous as Madrid.
Paris is much worse, est 45 per million, but as European capitals go that is probably the worst case. Or Washington is about six times as bad as Paris.

African and Muslim immigration is a net negative in Europe. A problem. But based on the statistics (I could add my 40 years of experience in the US but that is anecdotal) the US has vastly worse problems dealing with its native population (mainly black) than any European state has with any number of immigrants/refugees/migrants/whatever.
I suspect that even illegal immigrants in the US are in no way as disruptive as many of the natives. Illegal immigrants are a problem in terms of labor competition, but statistically they arent a critical problem for law and order, not compared to the chronc atrocious condition of the natives.

Let’s look at dime facts. The National Guard is present in DC because Washington mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, bought into “Defund the Police” in a big way, going so far as to have the slogan painted on a city street in letters that spanned the whole width of the street. (You can look it up.)
The second fact is that the headcount for Washington, DC’s metropolitan police force was toughly 1000 short. Consequently crime was out of control. (There are Democrats who dispute this fact. The citizens who actually live in Washington say the Democrats are wrong.). Since deployment of the Guard it is claimed that homicides are down 29%.
The first member of the West Virginia National Guard who was attacked was a woman rounding a corner. The attacker shot her, picked up her weapon, shot her again with her own weapon, this time in the head. He then engaged two other members of the Guard. One he shot in the neck, but the other member of the Guard wounded and neutralized the attacker.
As of right now Fox News is saying that all three people, the two Guard members and their alleged attacker, are alive. The wounded alleged attacker is in FBI custody and the two members of the Guard are hospitalized in critical condition. It says something about violent crime in DC that the Washington trauma doctors are so experienced in treating severe gunshot wounds.
The alleged attacker is an Afghani who came to this country under a Biden “humanitarian parole” program. He is reported to have overstayed his visa so in this country illegally. The Biden administration (deliberately?) lost track of him, until he resurfaced in Washington with an illegal firearm.

Responding specifically to Inga, the Guard was not brought into Washington on a whim. The policies of Democrat mayor Bowser resulted in a shortfall of metro police and consequently a crime rate that was out of control. Since the District is a federal enclave it fell to the executive branch of the federal government to do something about it. Mayor Bowser herself is on record effusively thanking the Trump administration for bringing in the National Guard to help get crime back under contral.
Secondly, it is impossible to smear or slander Democrats. Whenever one thinks they cannot possibly sink any lower, they find a way to do so.

In 2020 the Democrats went into a hysteric state to drum up support among their left wing and their black constituents. They adopted anti-police policies to please these (defective) people. None of these people say, or apparently believe, that a Muslim illegal alien that has overstayed his visa and somehow managed to illegally secure a firearm, then traveled to the nation's capital to murder soldiers, is worthy of consideration as a primary part of the problem, or a problem in need of solution. Soldiers wounded critically a couple of hours ago aren't the problem. The President is the problem.

We might also want to think about the 25-50 unknown residents of D.C. who are going to be at home with their families tomorrow, who would have been killed if the National Guard hadn't reduced the murder rate in D.C. by 60% since coming to town. As noted above, there have been 24 murders in D.C. since August 11th, as compared to 61 last year, so the number of lives saved is 37 plus or minus some number for random fluctuations, so almost certainly in the 25-50 range. That's a lot of lives saved and families unruined.
We, and they, will never know who these fortunate individuals are, but they do undoubtedly exist, and their continued existence is something to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving.
