When I was a boy I thought about the times I'd be a man
I'd sit inside a bottle and pretend that I was in a can
In my lonely room I'd sit my mind in an ice cream cone
You can throw me if you want to 'cause I'm a bone and I go
Oop-ip-ip oop-ip-ip yeah
If I don't start cryin' it's because that I have got no eyes
My father's in the fireplace and my dog lies hypnotized
Through a crack of light I was unable to find my way
Trapped inside a night but I'm a day and I go
Oop-ip-ip oop-ip-ip, yeah

Every once in a while, someone asks how Althouse can still read the NYT.
She’s capable of defending her choices if she wishes to, but let me make two points.
1. The NYT wrote a lovely story about her marriage to Meade. Many years ago, a local newspaper - that is absolutely a trash paper - wrote a story about a friend’s financial problems. The story was very kind. Since then, I’ve always looked at that paper with affection, even though the reporter who wrote the story no longer works there. So there’s that.
2. When I was seven, I started reading my local paper. I was an early riser, so I would bring in the Arizona Republic, make myself a glass of instant tea with milk, and read the paper at the kitchen table. First it was just the funnies, later the Women’s section (Dear Abby), and when I was older I’d go through the rest of the paper, stopping to read whatever interested me. It was my morning ritual in a chaotic family life, and I loved it. Years later, the paper was sold to Gannett and became a very liberal version of USA Today. I quit reading it. But I miss that start to my morning to this day. The NYT is different. It still has the Fashion section, the Obits, all the in-depth human-interest stories that my paper used to carry. So I completely understand keeping it as part of a daily ritual, even though a lot of the reporting falls short of what it should be.

@Achilles: thank you for the link
Points of disagreement/agreement.
1. He makes a big deal of Shapiro’s advice that people should move where the jobs are. I see Carlson’s point that people feel a sense of community living where they’ve always lived. But I also see Shapiro’s point. If there are no jobs where you live then moving to where there are jobs is a good solution.
2. Carlson kept stressing that Trump’s emphasis on not starting wars is what got him elected. I disagree. Trump was elected on the promise to close the border. Period. That he has done. I’m not adequately familiar with the Venezuelan situation to have a firm opinion. But Scott Adams says that it might be a good idea for us to be extra mindful of the political developments in our hemisphere of the world. That benefits our security. That’s a good point as well. It’s the reason we helped Argentina out and that may very well have been the right decision.
3. I 100% support Carlson’s right to have anyone he wants as a guest. I see nothing wrong with interviewing Putin or Fuentes. Having said that, he’s not a good interviewer. With Fuentes, the conversation was more a Tucker monologue rather than an exploration of Fuentes’ views. (BTW that show had double Carlson’s usual numbers. Nick Fuentes is very popular.)
4. Tucker is correct that any criticism of Israel is often labeled as antisemitism. That’s just laziness on the part of Israel supporters and damages their arguments. I completely reject the number and type of casualties Carlson kept citing. Those figures come from Hamas or international entities that are not neutral. They have either been infiltrated by Hamas or are Hamas supporters.
5. Although I agree with Carlson that we can’t blindly support everything Israel does, I still think supporting Israel is in our country’s best interests.

1. He makes a big deal of Shapiro’s advice that people should move where the jobs are.

Shapiro has always been a globalist free trade fuck the working class turd. Shapiro has always been supported by facebook and the republican donor class. He is basically MSNBC or Fox News with a different group of people to lie to. Shapiro has never had to work a real day in his life.

2. Carlson kept stressing that Trump’s emphasis on not starting wars is what got him elected. I disagree. Trump was elected on the promise to close the border. Period.

Trump was elected because people thought he would listen to Americans and help them deal with American's problems.

He hasn't ended the Ukraine bullshit and he spent an inordinate amount of time helping Israel with Iran.

Trump needs to stop dealing with Israel's problems and fix the affordability crisis in this country.

3. (BTW that show had double Carlson’s usual numbers. Nick Fuentes is very popular.)

If you ignore and trash young white males long enough you will end up with something a lot worse than Nick Fuentes.

4. Tucker is correct that any criticism of Israel is often labeled as antisemitism.

There is really zero difference between Mark Levin and Ben Shapiro vs. and of the Oligarch tools on the left calling for murder. They are both very explicit in their demands for censorship and persecution of those who disagree with them.

5. Although I agree with Carlson that we can’t blindly support everything Israel does, I still think supporting Israel is in our country’s best interests.

I agree. But you have to make that case honestly.

The Neocons are not making that case honestly and having AIPAC buy congress is the wrong answer.

As far as AIPAC buying Congress:
In his interview with Dave Smith

The tobacco lobby spent $200 million during the same period.

That figure for tobacco companies' lobbying expenditures appears to be wildly exaggerated. AIPAC is only one of several Zionist lobbies that would have to be added together to make a comparison to the entire tobacco industry. In terms of political contributions, those from Zionist organizations are increasing, while those from the tobacco industry are less than they were in the 1990s.

While illegal immigration was Trump's strongest issue, the MAGA package included bringing industry back and not plunging into foreign conflicts. That Trump may be going back on that last part is a cause for concern among many Trump supporters.

I'm trying to figure out, what goes through someone's mind, when they agree to be a "bodyguard". You're always reading about how somebody got killed, along with his bodyguards. Of course, if you want to kill Bob, and one or more "bodyguards" are intending to shoot holes in anyone who tries to kill Bob, well. You're gonna have to either become miraculously bulletproof, or else do something about Bob's bodyguards. So, who accepts a job where there's a high probability that a bunch of people are going to try to kill you, using equipment ideally suited to the task?

It has to be a dick thing. Some combination of an "I am invulnerable" narcissism and an "If I fail, I deserved to fail" fatalism. And also just a "Hey, at least I'm not bored" bumptiousness. Except, being a bodyguard has to be excruciatingly boring. Except when someone is trying to kill you.

"The White House has said that inflation numbers and jobs data for October will not be released." -- they must be bad, if they were indifferent or good they would have been released. The question is how bad -- tiny bad or bigly bad?

I'm sitting here in blue Sacramento with my parents, who have the local (let me point out, capital of California) news going all day long, and even that news reports that the reason those numbers aren't being released is the government shutdown - that the data collectors were not working in October.

Incidentally, they also showed screenshots of the Epstein emails indicating that "Trump knew about the girls" and asked Ghislaine to stop. My dad, a hardcore anti-Trump but otherwise (I think) moderate Democrat, didn't bat an eye when I commented that the redacted VICTIM was a woman who had worked for Trump and said he never even flirted with her. (I also acknowledged, out of respect for the 'rent, that she is dead and can't be asked - but he expressed a wish to "blow Trump up" a year or so ago, so I have to wonder whether his views have moderated a touch, or whether it's just the influence of my moderate-Republican mother telling him not to pick a fight.)

In any case. It's been interesting to be here in the belly of the beast. The DOJ lawsuit against CA for redistricting seems to me a high hill to climb - that it's unconstitutional because it's racially based in order to create more Hispanic districts - when the Texas redistricting actually did have the effect of increasing representation in majority Hispanic areas. I haven't looked at the DOJ claim - I only know what Sacramento news is reporting. But I did mumble aloud that TX had far more proportional representation by party than CA both before and after redistricting, and again my dad did not push back.

Making stuff up as he went, Little Marco has declared that the US designated certain foreign affiliates of the 'left-wing' Antifa movement as global terrorists in a move that expands a crackdown on the loose collective of anti-fascist organizations the Trump administration has accused of spreading violence.

"Designating Antifa - which stands against fascism and nazism and has has no defined organizational structure or leadership stateside - as a domestic terrorism organization is not only incorrect, it serves no purpose other than an excuse for the Trump administration to stifle dissent, investigate anyone - or any group - they don’t like, punish their enemies, and potentially label any American they want as a terrorist.

Never in our history has the U.S. government named a domestic terrorist organization. Domestic terrorism has been on the rise for years. Still, government officials from both Republican and Democratic administrations - along with all available data - are clear: the real threat is from right-wing violent extremism. Sadly, the Trump administration ignored this threat in its first term and has so far this year as it has diverted vast resources and personnel away from countering this very real threat towards its extreme mass deportation agenda.

Ref AIPAC et al: That made me think about how the Jewish vote is split. Nowadays, there seem to be about equal numbers of Jews on both sides of any issue, even the "anti-semitic" ones. Definitely along both sides of the conventional D-R party line. And this is true of other old-America ethnicities: Irish, Italians, Germans, etc. No one even attempts to say this or that policy will pick up all the Irish votes anymore, for example.

So this trend gives me hope that blacks and Hispanics can get to roughly 50% each D/R. Which would be good for the country. CC, JSM

I see this a lot:

IF this is true why not provide examples?

Besides the lack of evidence for this seemingly nuanced point, there is the bad faith speaker to deal with. That is, usually when I hear the above excuse in bold text it is from someone who has also said something like "Israel controls US policy" or "Jews run all the media." These statements are not "criticism of Israel" nor is labeling anyone who takes AIPAC money "an agent of Israel" any more than GW Bush was "my agent" because I contributed to his campaigns.

So my mind is open to a good argument from the Carlson side but I've yet to hear it. And I have a rule of thumb that anyone who traces every problem America or the World at large has back to Israel or "the joooos" is a nutter.

So far my record for correct assessment is pretty damn impressive.

I realize you are exaggerating for comic effect, but allow me to reveal the truth that makes it funny: the two parties could go back to what they were for most of the 20th century: relatively minor tactical differences in service of largely identical strategic goals. Once Ike refused to repeal the New Deal, both sides settled down to fairly small-c conservative approaches. Even Reagan was not nearly as virulent of a free-marketeer as he could have been, his military buildup kind of started under Carter, Clinton declared the end of big government, W resurrected it without explicitly saying so, etc, etc.

Even MAGA in a lot of ways is trying to return politics to the hardhat Reagan Democrat center.

A Dem party that can't depend on black and brown votes would get stronger from being forced to compete, and much less crazy. CC, JSM

I know you are too dumb to listen but for anyone else here there is a fundamental problem with this argument.

People are pretending that Israel killing 50000 muslims with massive bombs and overwhelming military firepower is morally good and muslims killing 1500 isrealis with hang gliders and AK 47s is the greatest moral atrocity in history.

Israel is making the mistake of arguing that killing people is a good thing as long as it is Israel killing Muslims.

War is necessary. Killing people is necessary. The ancestors of everyone in the world have blood on their hands. Israeli leaders using terms like Amalek belie their own claims.

Israel should have been honest from the start and said openly that Hamas will be destroyed and so must anyone in the way. They chose to pretend they could be the only good people in history and they tried to limit civilian casualties.

The Israeli army was not capable of doing this on it's own and the people of the United States are tired of helping Israel and getting nothing in return.

There is also the problem that Israel shows off all of this awesome intelligence capability with blowing up pagers and assassinating Iranian leaders.

But then somehow a bunch of retards in paragliders flew hundreds of feet into the air and floated over a giant wall at 30 miles an hour in broad daylight through the Iron Dome defense system that can shoot down missiles traveling mach 5.

Netanyahu belongs in jail.

People are tired of the bullshit.

They did say that, many times. The problem is they didn't do it. They were held back by Trump from finishing the job. Another bad call from the Orange Man.

So they "stand against fascism and naziism," but they don't exist. Right.
In that case, being designated as a terrorist organization should have no effect on them.

"Tucker is correct that any criticism of Israel is often labeled as antisemitism."

Antisemitism is a word with a constantly mutating and expanding definition. As the Rabbi in the debate with Candance Owens stated, you can't give a precise definitiion because whats "antisemitism" constantly changes.

I know that Mark Levin and Ben Shapiro pretty much call every critic of Israel a Nazi or an Antisemite. Theyre doing it to Tucker right now, but they used to do it to Pat buchanan, Ron Paul, and even Trump in 2015-2016.

RCOCEAN II said...

Probably the most hilarious use of the antisemite came when Netenyahu addressed the UN assembly, cried about the Holocaust, and denounced everyone who voted against Genocide in gaza, and for obeying the laws of war (and UN resolutions) as Antisemitic. In other words the whole world was antisemitic - except maybe the USA and the Gilbert Islands.

RCOCEAN II said...

The whole point that Tucker is making and should be agreed to by everyone is that Israel isn't the 51st state. They are a foreign country. And Americans should be able to say anything they want, at any time, about Goddamn Foreigners. Thats not just the 1st admendment, that's american patriotism.

You wanna love israel? go ahead. But when you start cancelling, gatekeeping, and censoring people who don't, we got a problem.

Speaking of economic numbers, Are US Container Imports Cratering?

One of the comments has an observer stating he sees rail visibly moving less. The mainline I observe isn't showing that.

MasterCard and Visa both report consumer spending is steady or rising.

Senate Republicans don’t want to bring in Jack Smith to testify before the American people to ask him why he subpoenaed limited phone data on 8 co-conspirators to overturn the election, they just want a quick $1 million check from the taxpayers instead.

Congress should get Jack Smith to remind America what happened.

Of course the lefties posting here would never purposely misrepresent anything the Trump administration is doing but the announcement they appear to be referencing is the designation of four *European* groups with suspected linkages to Antifa as *foreign* terrorist organizations, not a domestic terrorist designation. (link to Fox news report). Marco Rubio making the announcement should have been the first clue but I guess that 2x4 wasn't enough.

AMERICA FIRST? Ever heard of Rosie the Riveter? My grams worked in factories during the WW's AND SHE HAD TO LEARN.
What a statement about American Workers..
Trump supporters are furious over recent comments from the president(I think that's a little dramatic) suggesting immigrant workers are needed to fill certain high-skill roles that he believes many Americans wouldn’t be qualified for.
In an interview on Monday with Laura Ingraham on Fox News, President Trump said the U.S. economy has to “bring in talent” in some cases on the H-1B specialist visa program, which is popular in the tech world.
When Ingraham pressed Trump that there were “talented people” in America companies could hire, the president batted down her comments.
“No you don’t,” he said. “You don’t have certain talents, and people have to learn. You can’t take people off an unemployment line and say, ‘I’m going to put you into a factory and we’re going to make missiles.’”
The remarks have enraged MAGA supporters online(MEDIA DRAMA (MAGAS are locked into this fella regardless, they'll agree no matter what based on the evidence)who saw the president’s stance as a betrayal of his “America First” agenda to prioritize U.S. workers. More North against the South MEDIA FODDER to stimulate news, MAGAS are not going to defy anything their leader tells them, even when whining. AMERICA FIRST .a blatant fabrication, think Argentina, Bolsannaro, overseas ,while country bleeding from shutdown.not AMERICA FIRST at all..
