Well my turn came today- we had to put the dog down. Arthritis, then cataracts and today the lymph nodes everywhere. No mas. He was the last to be picked from the litter, six months old when he came to us, was my mother’s shadow, he had a few kids, got to visit them a few times. Generally a happy guy. Their ancestors went all in with people long ago for better or worse. The ones we meet didn’t sign up so tried to make it worth their while. You finally get each other broken in and it’s time to go. Not enough…

When I was in high school- some 55 years ago or so, I bought a copy of The Blue Book of the John Birch Society. One of the things it advocated was organizing along the same way Communists did in the USA- and everywhere else. Small groups, in a horizontal organization with no clear vertical structure leading to a leader. If any cell got busted, most cell members could lead to only other members of that cell, and communications between cells would be minimized, with no real names being exchanged.

Sound familiar to anyone? It should.

Look at all the lefties today. "Antifa isn't real!" "There's no such group as antifa!" "There are no antifa leaders, it's all right wing imagining!"

In today's communications age, it's much much easier to do such horizontal organizing to create organizations that don't exist in any formal way with bylaws and succession plans. They aren't needed for antifa's goal- the destruction of the United States and it's society. Each cell can act on it's own- and if one says- "We're going to assemble at the Portland ICE facility tonight and every night!" then others can freely join them. Or not. And do or not do the same day. Harassing ICE and keeping them from ding their job. And when Democrat mayors and governors assist by refusing to prosecute or even investigate violent attacks against people opposing them, well, you have the KKK ruled south- another Democrat party institution. That had a similar horizontal organization... There was no one big klan.

Cooperation and close cooperation is needed to build things, like societies and civilization and railroads and ports. To destroy takes a handful of people intent on destroying things. Several handfuls all over bring things down faster. Eventually you get vigilantism or authoritarian governments to bring things to an end. I wonder which will get here first...

Because of "One battle after another" I tried to watch a couple other PT Anderson films. First, "The Master" wonder performances. Beautiful camera work. But so slow. And plenty of dialogue with....pause....pause..pauses. Speak sentence. Pause. Actors Looks and act. Cut to next actor. Pause. Actor Looks. Acts. Cut to back.

Next, "There will be blood". Daniel Day Lewis. Great acting. Wonderful camera work. What set design! Thought I was back in 1910s Cali-forn-i-yah. But slow. Very, very, slow. Lots of pauses. Lots of...meaningful looks. And well, who cares? Negative story. And well, who really cares? Not me.

There is no blood. Its a bloodless movie that should be stuffed and mounted in a museum. Sorry. Wonder what Orson Welles would've done with the same story. LOL!

Oh, and both moves are about 2 1/2 hours and had 90 minutes of plot.

A couple of weeks ago I was in Switzerland. On the gondola ride down from Jungfraujoch our guide gave us a talk on how Green the whole enterprise was. The cogwheel trains used regenerative braking on the way down to power the trains on the way up. That sort of thing. Later that day we boarded our boat, which was moored in an industrial area off the Rhine in Basel. It was next to a big power plant, surrounded by mountains of coal. So much for Net Zero.

Everytime I see one of these long, new movies, I think: Casablanca was about 100 minutes. 12 Angry Men = 95 minutes. GWTW is long, but every Goddam minute is interesting. Same with Citizen Kane. Hitchcock rarely made a movie over 2 hours. Star Wars = 2 hours.

So why is your movie > 2 hours?

And the dialogue? Forgettable. Whens the last time a movie had bing-bam crackling dialogue? Mostly its seems to be "Lets rely on our great actors/camera work".

RCOCEAN II said...

Just Remembered "Glenn Gary Glenn Ross". Great script. Great dialogue. Gave the actors great lines. Or "LA Confidential" but that in the 90s. What about in the last 25 fucking years?

Concerning acetaminophen and autism, plus a particular developmental window plus the presence of "oxidative stress."

I don't know if "oxidative stress" is a definable medical condition (although I also would contend that "definable" is a moving target), but as I alluded to in another thread a few days ago, in high school I knew an elderly nun who advised all of us never to take aspirin with Coke because she'd known a young teen who did so, fell into a coma, and died.

Turns out that was probably Reye syndrome, the now well understood condition that affects babies through teens who take aspirin in response to a fever. So, the Coke wasn't important, but the aspirin plus the predicating fever may have led to the coma and death. Just as - as the paper discusses - it's not just acetaminophen, but the combination of acetaminophen and oxidative stress during a critical window that could cause regressive autism in some children.

I am open to this argument.

Apparently one study dealt with baby boys who were circumcised - and RFKJr is, as usual, being misrepresented in his statements about it. The study focused on babies who were and were not circumcised because the circumcized babies were very likely to have been given Tylenol, not simply that they were circumcised (which is apparently how some outlets are reporting it).

If this were true - if simply by avoiding Tylenol during the critical time window for babies and children under physical stress were enough to cut autism prevalence significantly - why wouldn't we want to know it?

Well there you go. I suppose you may be trying to be "ironic". A lot of people on this blog try to be cryptic and ambigious, because they don't have the brains or the guts to say things straight out.

But I don't think you're being "ironic". I think you don't care about good or memorable writing. And guess what? You're in the majority. The masses have never cared about good screenplays. They just want car crashes and "cool" violence. You have to wonder why there was so much good dialogue in the 1930-1970 time period. I think it was Hollywood producers wanting the critics to like them. Once the critics lost influence, it just became what put bums in the seats. Joe sixpack has never cared about wit or good writing. Just give 'em some boobs and some violence and they're happy.

RCOCEAN II said...

Of course, only a small minority like good dialogue and don't want to bored. But that never really impacted with the mass audience. Hitchcock is full of good screenplay dialogue. But the masses just like the thrill and chills. Ooh, Janet Leigh just got stabbed. Oh, Cary Grant is in Danger. My, Grace Kelly is so beautiful. To the masses, and I think most Hollywood producers, all the fine screen writing went over their heads.

So, once the critics lost their sway it was just dumbed down to the mass level. Who noticed? Only a small artsy-fartsy minority. The gum chewers and beer swillers never noticed the difference. Just give 'em more batman and more nice pictures. And sex and violence.

RCOCEAN II said...

If you want to look at the difference between smart and dumb screenwriting look at the Mask of Zorro (1940) and the 90s version. The older one is concise, witty, and well written. The older one relies on the sexy Zeta-jones, stunts, production values, and visuals. Why write witty dialogue for 90s audiences? Not needed. Pearls before swine.

Rehajm: People are always saying they have the "Best Dog in the World"---and they are all absolutely right. So it's really tough when they leave us.

Our Golden died 11 years ago, yet his favorite toy remains in a corner of our kitchen. Nobody can bear to pack it away or toss it out.

Just yesterday I heard a young relative had recently quit his job in a nursing home, saying he didn't like seeing all the patients dying.

I said if he feels that way, he shouldn't ever consider owning a dog.

Turns out, he and his girlfriend have three.

That's rough. My sympathies.

We've been dealing with that in our little cul-de-sac this week. Just by coincidence, neighbors on both sides of our house had to put down their dogs on Sunday.

Never easy putting down a pet. It helps to have the vet come to the house as opposed to putting them through additional stress by taking them to the office.

If there are any Windows 11 users who miss the old fashioned notepad this (unfortunately, really messed up) webpage (scroll, but don't click) has the exact instructions to replace the the annoying new one and bring back the old ideally functional one.. at least temporarily. That is till a future update wipes it out. Maybe not.
And by ideally functional, I mean it is a text editor and almost nothing more. Ever since I made the switch a couple days ago, I grin a little every time I run it.
Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete are back where they have been on the context menu for the last 400 years. And identified with words! Words! It's weird wild stuff.

I'm struggling to get my head around this -- Marjorie Taylor Greene is now the sane one.

Last time Trump carried out mass sackings, they ended up having to re-hire a lot of the workers. Turned out that Musk's DOGE gang didn't have a clear grasp of which workers were actually essential and were firing people pretty much at random. The re-hiring cost so much that by some estimates DOGE ended up as a net cost to the US taxpayer.

This is the core problem that Trump's team face -- most of them are nowhere near as smart as they think they are.
