From "Inside Slam Frank — the ‘offensive’ Holocaust musical that could save Broadway/A show has turned the tragedy of Anne Frank into an ‘inclusive’ commentary on wokeness. And New York City audiences can’t get enough" (London Times).
And here's the review at Forward: "The new Anne Frank musical wants you to laugh at ‘woke culture’ — but is it funny? In ‘Slam Frank,’ it’s hard to tell who’s in on the joke and who is just…in it":
If you understand the jokes about neurodiversity and pronouns as a form of protest humor against “woke culture,” does that mean the playwright sees political correctness as the dominant narrative in our society right now?... [E]ven among the left and among those whose identities are under attack — people who make up the cast and crew of Slam Frank — there seems to be an exhaustion with identity politics’ overpolicing of who can say what....
As a musical, Slam Frank actually holds its own.... But every time I was compelled to laugh with the audience, my amusement was mixed with apprehension and guilt. I knew why I thought the overdone Black American Accent and caricatured Jewish stereotypes were funny; but it’s hard to relax when you don’t know if the rest of the audience is laughing with you or at you.

This "could save Broadway"? How, if no one can tell whether or when to laugh? Book of Mormon, I don't think this is coming for you, from the sounds of it.
Vanity signaling is a mine field....not literally of course.
Broadway has an opportunity to be one of the last paying jobs in the country.
This musical sounds like a step in the right direction to be honest.

Assumes facts not in evidence:
What might "exactly-the-right-amount" of policing look like? Who does the policing and who determines the right amount?
In addition, why would the right amount depend on "who" is doing the saying of the "what"?
I remember Al Franken getting heat for joking about Anne Frank getting a set of drums for Hannukah.
Either way, the Bat Mitzvah gift of a drum set was a mistake.
Shorter London Times: We must mock Broadway in order to save it.
Sexism. Racism. Trans/Homophobia, too. DEIsm. Abort. Sequester.
Disband this. Disgusting.
Springtime for Twitter.
Musical review aside, the article finally addresses what's on the Left's mind 24/7: how to regain the WH.
Woke culture is the immortal, immoral joke.
As with Nazis and other left-wing ideologues, they are laughing at, not with you.
---- In other words: what if someone produced a musical about Anne Frank fit for the 2020s?
The LGBTQ in the Attic. Genius!
GBTQ in the Attic. Genius!
This suggests a re-imagining of Jane Eyre. Boffo!
"Vanity signaling is a minefield."
Ya gotta stake your claim.
Three years ago, I experienced the reimagined musical Oklahoma written by Rodgers and Hammerstein in Los Angeles. It featured a 300-plus-pound Black transwoman in the role of the town floozy Ado Annie (“I’m Just a Girl Who Can’t Say No”). At least they didn't tamper with the original score.
Sounds like a mix of The Producers and Hamilton
This sounds horrible. Of course the last Broadway show's I've seen were in 1986, most enjoyable La Cage aux Follies most excretable Cats!
Are they making fun of Hamilton?
It's too meta for me. Anne Frank was a real Jew who was murdered by Nazis.
And the timing is horrible. I remember when people yelled at Seinfeld when he produced an episode that made fun of the sanctity of Schindler's List. And now Seinfeld, and a lot of other Jews, are noticing a resurgence of anti-Semitism. He's gone from a young and flippant Jew to a brave and serious one.
Satire is one of the toughest forms of humor to pull off. Mel Brooks was a master.
The timing couldn't be worse, what with the new taboo against Hitler jokes. Or is it just against right-wingers telling Hitler jokes? I can never be sure.
Thinking about the re-imagining of Jane Eyre, it is traditional for Rochester to be played by a Black guy.
I'm not a Mormon, but I have no interest in mocking them. The Book of Mormon seems rude to me. An unfair attack on a minority religion. I watch that trailer, and I feel sorry for Mitt Romney. It's not funny to me. And it's not art. And I look at the year that show came out, and I'm like, okay, political hacks. I have zero interest.
So maybe anti-Semitism or anti-Zionism is popular again in NYC? I sympathize with the Jews and I welcome them, along with the Mormons, to the Republican party. We love you and we want your votes.
"it is traditional for Rochester to be played by a Black guy."
ISWYDT.
"The story of ann frank" is the most of the most successful propaganda stories ever written and pushed on the public. Its been proven that Ann Frank didn't write it - her father did. Published in the 1950s and we're still treating it as some sort of sacred text.
Except for "To Kill a Mockingbird" its hard to think of anything that had such an impact. And for so long.
Ann Frank had white privilage - I assume this is satire, but who knows these days.
Nick Fuentes would say "White adjacent privilege."
The left attempting any form of humor is a step forward. The Green and Woke theses banned joking about numerous topics circa the late 1990s, and the left as a whole became humorless and grim. See Jerry Seinfeld stopping his stand-up events on college campuses.
St. Croix, I've seen Book of Mormon twice (the second time not by choice, but in a group I couldn't get out of) and I tend to agree with you that it's in terrible taste (I mean, anyone who's seen it would have to agree even if they loved it, ISTM). But it's very obvious where they intend you to laugh.
The Mormons themselves have taken advantage of its popularity, I understand, by offering "Want to learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints?" pamphlets in the lobbies or outside. Good on them. Peaceful, humorous, and thick-skinned.
Making fun of Jews - punching up. Making fun of Mormons - punching down.
Its hard to think of anybody the elite despises more than Evangelical Christians and Mormons. When haven't they been the butt of entertainment industries jokes? I can remember them being mocked in the 70s.
It is a mystery to me why rcocean’s antisemitic and revisionist ravings are still allowed to appear here.
Every individual who bought tickets needs to be cancelled.
Every member of the cast and stage crew needs to be executed.
The authors need to be burned at the stake.
After all, this abomination of a musical is thousands of times worse than the Young Republicans’ texts.
Let's do something that demeans a tragic history, and then we'll call it satire and get a pass, and sell loads of tickets for being edgy.
I think I can save my money. Sounds like the best thing about this production is a chance to Pasadena.
@trcrosse: Good one, but only those over seventy got it....Time marches on: Jack Benny references need a footnote, and Anne Frank can be joshed.
"@trcrosse: Good one, but only those over seventy got it....Time marches on: Jack Benny references need a footnote, and Anne Frank can be joshed."
Heh. Now I get it. That was funny.
Now do a satirical musical about 9/11.
They are rotten pond scum
Wow, 2022 was a long time ago.
ROCEAN II actually prompted me to do some research and as best I can tell, he is, as usual, full of it. There is no proof or even believable evidence that her father wrote her diary. He did edit it, but it doesn't appear it was of any great significance. Every so often he says things I agree with, but, his anti-semitism has deranged him.
New York Times:
After years of detective work, the Dutch Government has for the first time proved the authenticity of Anne Frank's diary down to the last detail. An authoritative edition of the book, which has moved millions of readers around the world, will be published in the United States by Doubleday on Monday.

I can’t imagine anyone other than Eddie Anderson in the role.
What next, movie comedies about concentration camps?
What would Wertmuller say?

I agree wholeheartedly with the above commenters. Why is his vile antisemitism considered normal and tolerated? No other form of racism or bigotry expressed here would be.
Especially after these last two years of non-stop calls for the annihilation of the Jewish people by "pro Palestinian activists," I think we are at a turning point where antisemitism will go back to being socially unacceptable or it will be enhanced and fully normalized. That can't be tolerated. That includes joke about the Holocaust. There are certain crimes which are never funny.
Anyone who says it's too soon will get no argument from me, but eventually we will get kids dressing as Nazis for Halloween. If it happened to pirates it can happen to anyone.
Anne Frank: minority who wanted nothing more than to be integrated into the majority society and culture. Killed for it.
Today's Left: minorities who want nothing more than to reject, and if possible, destroy, the majority society and culture. Willing to kill for it. CC, JSM
I am am unable to hate these people enough
I can’t imagine anyone other than Eddie Anderson in the role.
@Rocco, how about Samuel L. Jackson?
The Ann frank foundation has now declared that her father Otto Frank, legally was a "Co-Author". No one has ever disagreed that Otto Frank "edited" and "Compiled" the diary and published it in the 50s.
"Whats next, movie comedies about concentration camps?"
Paging Jack Benny and Lubitsch
"Its been proven that Ann Frank didn't write it - her father did."
Yeah, guess this was an overstatement. Her father edited and compliled it and had so much input he is now considered a "Co-author".
People consider it almost a religious text. So, sorry for offending anyone.
What's next, a comedy entitled "The Great Dictator" about Hitler?
What's next, a musical about "Springtime for Hitler"?
What's next, a comedy about Hogan's Heroes in a prison camp?
Those who lived through the Nazi era were very open to humor.
Planned Prisonerhood (PP) was a democratically favored Choice and wicked solution in that era of forward-looking progressive possibilities. Dreams of Herr Mengele, too. Deja vu.
It was a handmade tale of clinics, camps, and gas chambers.
Her father edited and compliled it and had so much input he is now considered a "Co-author".
New York Times again:
The move has a practical effect: It extends the copyright from Jan. 1(2015), when it is set to expire in most of Europe, to the end of 2050. Copyrights in Europe generally end 70 years after an author’s death. Anne Frank died 70 years ago at Bergen-Belsen, a concentration camp, and Otto Frank died in 1980. Extending the copyright would block others from being able to publish the book without paying royalties or receiving permission.

I think there was a similar offering in the 90s about the aids epidemic beirut (there was no camp element to it)
There is a major difference between mocking the perpetrators of heinous crimes and those who are their victims. I'm surprised I have to point out that I am completely in favor of mocking the perpetrators.
Its not clever its stupid and ignorant
Rosalyn FTW.
I will accept that it's simply the case that you have to see it to judge whether or not it pulled it off. But while I love The Producers, I'm not going to see this show
"Cancel culture is simply what women do whenever there are enough of them in a given organization or field. That is the Great Feminization thesis: Everything you think of as “wokeness” is simply an epiphenomenon of demographic feminization.
Everything you think of as wokeness involves prioritizing the feminine over the masculine: empathy over rationality, safety over risk, cohesion over competition.
The problem is not that women are less talented than men or even that female modes of interaction are inferior in any objective sense. The problem is that female modes of interaction are not well suited to accomplishing the goals of many major institutions."
Written by a woman. Read the whole thing here:

After 80 years, there are no sacred cows.
Are they making fun of Hamilton?
Saint Croix nailed it.
Benson = Rochester?
When I was young, the radically transgressive Broadway plays were about white and non-white people too, like the Sharks and the Jets. It has ever been thus, to make sport in drama of the differences that unite us as a people.
Slam Frank has been percolating for awhile online. Larry David published a story in the New Yorker with Ann Frank as a Latina. Many people thought he ripped off Slam Frank.

I fuckin' hate the left. I hate Broadway and what it's turned into. And I'm pretty much done with New Yorkers, who would flock to this pile of horse manure in the same month they're voting in a communist as their Mayor.
Good God. Is there anyone left in the Pig Apple with any taste?
I guess I have lived a very sheltered life in my 79 years. I have watched and enjoyed West Side Story in multiple formats over many of those years and never once did it cross my mind that it was about "white and non-white people . . . the Sharks and the Jets."
