"... Mr. Haskell paid $500 to several day laborers to haul away several heavy black plastic trash bags from his home.... When they looked inside one of them, they found human body parts, prompting them to return the bags..."

"... and money to Mr. Haskell, whom they photographed — along with the bags — and reported to the police, prosecutors said. That same afternoon, investigators said, Mr. Haskell was seen in security camera footage removing a trash bag from the trunk of his Tesla and disposing of it in a dumpster in a parking lot in nearby Encino, Calif. A person sifting through the dumpster the next day found a beheaded torso.... During an initial criminal proceeding in December 2023, Mr. Haskell appeared shirtless in court, wearing a smock intended to prevent inmates from using it to hang themselves. At the time, his lawyer told Fox News that the Sheriff’s Department had forced him to appear that way, creating speculation that Mr. Haskell might harm himself...."

From "Son of Ex-Hollywood Agent, Jailed in 3 Murders, Dies by Suicide, D.A. Says/Samuel Haskell, 37, was accused of dismembering his wife and his in-laws. He was the son of Sam Haskell III, an Emmy-winning film producer and veteran talent agent" (NYT).

The father, we're told, "had several A-list clients, including George Clooney, Ray Romano and Whoopi Goldberg," was a producer of "several films and shows about Dolly Parton," and headed "the Miss America Organization until... he resigned amid reports that he and other pageant leaders had made misogynistic and derogatory comments about the competition’s contestants." The link on "resigned" goes to the 2017 HuffPo article, "The Miss America Emails: How The Pageant’s CEO Really Talks About The Winners/Internal correspondence reveals name-calling, slut-shaming and fat-shaming in emails between the Miss America CEO, board members and a pageant writer."

Couldn't be funnier if Kathy Griffin was on the list. Ooof.

Just a reminder: They gave Jeffrey Epstein a regular jump suit and sheets when they placed him on suicide watch.

A rope with a noose knotted into it would have been a bit too obvious.

Muderous and stupid. Maybe he should have labeled the bags "Striesand records" - then no one would've cared.

In CA he gets points for the EV, hiring day-laborers for cash, and being a failed scion but he lost points on the garbage bags and not recycling. 2/10, should hang.

Somehow I think Norm MacDonald could have written this.

His Choices. But failure to ethically sequester the "burden" of evidence in a sanctuary state means he will be posthumously indicted, convicted, and sequestered himselfie.

It's not so much the murders that will tarnish his reputation, but the "name-calling, slut-shaming and fat-shaming."

So the day laborers reported the incident to the police but they didn't rush right over? Instead Haskell was given the opportunity to dispose of the body parts at the dumpster. I would think the police would give immediate attention to a call about bags full of body parts.

Let's examine the ambiguous writing: "That same afternoon, investigators said, Mr. Haskell was seen in security camera footage." Maybe the security camera footage was viewed later and not in real time and what happened "That same afternoon" was the viewing of the footage.

I think the day laborers should have called the police as soon as they saw what was in the bags. Don't do one more thing.

Ann Althouse said...

Or were they trying to generate more evidence connecting Haskell to the bags (or trying to get more money)?

What kind of privilege does one have to have to think that body part disposal can be delegated. Some work you really need to do yourself.

I would have called the police when I found what was in the bags, but I can see where someone might have had a reasonable fear to do so. Getting the bags back into his possession might make sense if you think the cops won't believe how you got them.

I would have done the same. If you call the police while you have a body you would probably get arrested yourself.

They didn't go directly to the police because (1) they were illegal aliens most likely and (2) they didn't want the police to think it was THEIR bags full of body parts.

That's why they took pictures/video and returned it to the murderer, and *then* called the police. Their primary motive was to not to get involved in a possible crime as an accessory.

What caught my attention is that the suspect was dressed in smock that was designed to make it hard to suicide. Then he did suicide later.

RCOCEAN II said...

The Laborers also had no idea the bodies had been murdered. That seems like most likely GUESS. But not proven.

RCOCEAN II said...

I have no idea why you would chop someone up, put their bodies in a bag and then not dump the body parts yourself. What did this guy think was going to happen?

I am unsure why it was necessary to mention George Clooney and other Democrats when writing about Haskell. No murders were performed by Clooney, Romano, Goldberg or the Partons.

But authorities might want to review the video tapes from the lockup. U.S government-run police agencies may have been on site.

It is what the NYT does these days, botfly. Guilt by association. It was the same thing with the Minnesota assassin, except now we have a confession saying otherwise. I'd be cool if progressives quit playing the game.

Why don't you start the new trend and set the example for the NYT to follow?

Think like an immigrant, not an East Coast hustler...
No, they weren't trying to scam him for more cash (funny how that brain o yours thinks proffy...)
They wanted... no trouble. Return the bags and the cash. Get "unlinked" to the trouble. Undo what they (almost) did...

Immigrants have morals you Americans have forgotten about. They work too. He was "undoing" the deal, in an honorable way. Maybe the guy didn't know what was in the bag? By RETURNING the cash (not asking for more sillyhead!), they were making themselves not complicit.

Just like some of us want our tax dollars back for all the children being killed today in Palestine in our name...

In your genes, it's all about money. What an easy way to live life... until you meet up with another like you, who doesn't value life so much as money. Good luck.

See now, somebody is thinking...
We got a reader here. Can consider things from other people's perspectives.

Maybe just maybe the illegal laborers have different considerations than a pampered white Ivory Tower lady going to the police for help...

Gawrsh are you a dunderhead about real life, professor.

All of these Sam Haskells are confusing. And how will this affect "Promises I Made My Mother," the heart-warming book by one of the Sam Haskells:

What would my mother say? How would she want me to handle this situation? How can I make this tough decision and stay true to myself?

What would my mother say?

Sam Haskell still asks himself these questions every day.

When Haskell was young, his devoted mother, Mary, instilled in her son the values of character, faith, and honor by setting an example and asking him to promise to live his life according to her lessons. He did, and those promises have served Haskell consistently from his Mississippi boyhood to his long career at the venerable William Morris Agency in Beverly Hills.

A Seattle rock station (KISW) used to do 'Leave It To Beaver' parodies back in the early '80s. And there is one episode where Eddie did exactly that.
