"I think it’s going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions. And it’s going to require Democrats to just toughen up."

Said — guess who? — Barack Obama.

This is another one of those statements to fundraisers that you weren't supposed to hear, but they manage to leak out somehow.

In this case, the statement was "exclusively obtained by CNN."

The reputedly amiable but often crabby ex-President also said: "You know, don’t tell me you’re a Democrat, but you’re kind of disappointed right now, so you’re not doing anything. No, now is exactly the time that you get in there and do something. Don’t say that you care deeply about free speech and then you’re quiet. No, you stand up for free speech when it’s hard. When somebody says something that you don’t like, but you still say, 'You know what, that person has the right to speak.' … What’s needed now is courage."

What have they got that I ain't got?

Obama's remarks made me think of this "printed, foldable card that can fit right into your ID badge holder" given out by the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, developed by the Office of Social Impact and Belonging:
I'm perceiving an effort to shift the emotional atmosphere from one of firing up over all the many wrongs that are structured into everything into maintaining composure and giving other people room to have their own perceptions and feelings. Breathe, think, pause. Did a memo go out?

There's more from Obama here, though, so let's keep reading.
“Stop looking for the quick fix. Stop looking for the messiah...."

The messiah got term-limited and he's not coming back.

“There’s been, I gather, some argument between the left of the party and people who are promoting the quote-unquote abundance agenda. Listen, those things are not contradictory. You want to deliver for people and make their lives better? You got to figure out how to do it.... I don’t care how much you love working people. They can’t afford a house because all the rules in your state make it prohibitive to build. And zoning prevents multifamily structures because of NIMBY... I don’t want to know your ideology, because you can’t build anything. It does not matter...."

Remember when Democrats would look at those who did build things and assert that they didn't build that? Now, that was ideology! Remember "You didn't build that"? Who said that? Was it Elizabeth Warren or... oh!

What makes the dawn come up like thunder?

"Stop looking for the messiah....", said the erstwhile messiah.

Actually, to stop looking for the Messiah is exactly the wrong advice. His response to the ever-present microaggressions would be to love and forgive. Also to stop focusing on yourself and lose yourself in the service of others - even the service of those who despitefully used you.

Obama sounds like he is trying to help, but his message wasn't very clear. He could have suggested something like, "Saying 'I hate Trump' is not a policy agenda. Be in favor of something." or "Is it really so bad to put America first?"

The UW Health wallet card isn't so bad, but how about just a sticker to put on the back of your ID card that says, "Suck it up, buttercup".

Nose in the air, lecturing and chastising as usual. Between Obama, Joe, and Kamala, the Democrats have the whole 'leadership' thing covered. Time and distance hasn't been kind to the Obama legacy, and even Obama seems to want to put distance on it.

The only ones that ever had a problem with Free Speech was the Democrats, and it was 'recently', and on an industrial scale. They are reaping as they sowed.

Mr. President, haven't you done enough damage?
Imagine taking advice from this man who violated the Constitution more than any in history. That makes him the perfect leader of the Democrats according to them.

THe Democrats and the Left are smart. They identify the key issues that will give them power, and they never give up on those. It used to labor unions and Government benefits. That won them the working class. Today, its open borders and immigration. They know if they can just keep millions of browns and blacks pouring into the USA every year, the changing demographics will give them complete victory.

They did it in California, and they are doing it to the rest of the USA.

Notice when Obama talked about "solving the housing crisis", he didn't mention the easiest thing. Stop immigration and forbid foreingers from buying land and houses. Costs nothing. Just a sign a bill. Instead, he skips over that, and talks about "Getting rid of zoning laws" or "Making it easier to build". Which is vague and almost impossible to do.

Speaking of firing up, somehow you are missing all the real firings going on in the Trump empire, which go far beyond Obama's mere speculations. There are no real reasons for the firings. The latest, of course, are the honest lawyers who were assigned to work on DOJ's valid charges relating to Donald Trump's putsch attempt and his failure to turn over classified documents.

bagoh20 said...

If Republicans are winning all the 80/20 issues why are the polls as close as they are?
Because we have a lot of emotional non-reasoning people in our culture. They couldn't pick the right path if the wrong one clearly went right over Niagara Falls, as long as there was a sign that said "Trump hates this path". The Democrats loudly promote things that you know damned well they don't support in their own lives, and then other Democrats cheer them on while also privately doing the opposite. How many Democrats have an illegal immigrant living in their home, or willingly pay one's bills. How many would actually be happy if their child wanted to transition? How many really want to pay more taxes, or release criminals back to the street in their neighborhood, yet that's what they vote for every time?

Do we, in fact, know that microaggressions are either common or harmful?

I mean, I think it's intuitively clear that to assume that everyone you meet means you ill (and is just hoping you're too dumb to notice) is harmful. But is everything you perceive under that standard actually a "microaggression," or is it your standard for evaluating human interactions that's causing the harm?

I have yet to hear an explanation of "microaggression" that hits differently from the Money Python "What else floats?" "A duck!" sequence. You can sprinkle your arguments with "therefore" and "thus it can be seen that" and "Q.E.D." all you want, but if you don't actually understand the workings of logic, your result will not be a true statement.

So much for the UW wallet card.

As for Obama - there's a Substack piece in The Liberal Patriot right now that contrasts Obama's progressive rhetoric and moderate actions with Biden's progressive-progressive approach, and, while decrying Obama's moderation*, nevertheless wonders whether Biden** wouldn't have benefited from following the same playbook. Again, the answer to Democrat woes appears to be "lie better."

* I consider most of Obama's "moderation," as described in the piece, to be an artifact of the passage of time and the ratcheting leftward of the Overton window. Whatever is left over, whatever was truly moderate, was (I think) political pragmatism - which I'm fine with as long as it benefits the nation and doesn't violate the Constitution, even if the intent was actually just to consolidate electoral power.

** That is to say, whoever was running things during the Biden administration.

@bagoh20: "If Republicans are winning all the 80/20 issues why are the polls as close as they are?"

Because modern polling is instructional, not querying. The questions are formulated to subtly push and steer the answers, and then the results are crafted into messages, presented as 'results', subtly shaping and guiding the preferred narrative 'public opinion'.

And if this should fail to deliver the desired outcome, there's always intimidation. While most people dislike, even despise bullying, there are still plenty of people that relish the power and authority, especially when the intimidation and implied violence is sanctioned - as is being done by Progressive Democrat Party leaders now. Being told by an authority that you can bully other people gives a certain segment of society great satisfaction.

3. but at the same time, it feels threatening to the very values it purports to enforce

4. seems like a makework holding pen for overpaid graduates of useless departments

Also: Getting rid of "zoning laws" which prevent "multifamily housing" (i.e., government-funded housing projects) has been a far-left dream for a long time. Their problem is more fundamental than that.

Obama is a mediocre loser who could not run a latte stand. He doesn’t have the intelligence or the work ethic of a plumber.

But he can read a teleprompter and he can look pretty on camera such that the average middle age single woman looks to him for inspiration. Add in DEI browny points and he has everything he needs to win elections.

Thus Obamas problem. The only people who have a use for him and who pay for his lavish lifestyle and grant him unearned status are the globalist oligarchs who need someone to lead people stupid enough to believe in socialism.

So the oligarchs pay Obama and make him rich and give him authority. But the oligarchs want things that 80% of Americans don’t want.

Obama’s job is to trick Americans into wanting the things the globalist oligarchs want.

No matter what happens this will make sure his place in history is a bad one.
