"The leaders of two of the nation’s largest and most influential labor unions have quit their posts in the Democratic National Committee in a major rebuke to the party’s new chairman, Ken Martin...."

"The departures of [Randi] Weingarten and [Lee] Saunders represent a significant erosion of trust in the D.N.C. — the official arm of the national party — during a moment in which Democrats are still locked out of power and grappling for a message and messenger to lead the opposition to President Trump. In their resignation messages, the two union chiefs suggested that under Mr. Martin’s leadership, the D.N.C. was failing to expand its coalition. Both labor leaders had supported Mr. Martin’s rival in the chairmanship race, Ben Wikler, the chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party...."

I'm reading "Two Top Union Leaders Quit D.N.C. Posts in Dispute With Chairman/Randi Weingarten, head of one of the nation’s most influential teachers unions, and Lee Saunders, the president of a large union of public workers, each pointed to Ken Martin’s leadership" (NYT).

Here's Saunders lying (he's a Democrat) about ICE on June 8th:

"Yesterday, David Huerta, vice president of the California Labor Federation, and president of SEIU California and SEIU United Service Workers West, was injured and detained by ICE agents as he peacefully observed immigration enforcement activity in his community."

Ben Wikler is evil. People who support Ben Wikler are even worse.

Funny how two of the biggest labor unions are just government workers. No wonder they're so leftwing and favor open borders.

Crikey, when these two quit the DNC where the heck do they go? Trojan horse the party in charge?

Who knew that the leaders of purportedly neutral tax exempt organizations could be on committees setting the agenda for a political party?

That's really not fair to Martin, they've expanded their coalition to include every insane person in the country. They have all the women. All the gays. All the otherkin pyrofoxes.

Who else do Weingarten and Saunders want to join their pity party? The sane?

I suspect Weingarten and Saunders will reemerge in more blatently hard-left, millionaire commie nonprofit positions.

I doubt the massive shakedown pseudo-union posts they held will change course. They just needed to revanche the crowns for optics of change.

Wikler wins by getting the Teachers Union out of Dem politics! Who said that boy was a good for nothing??

If Wikler's party is losing so bad, why is he so rich??

I just read Randi's letter (believe it or not she's not Trans. Its a woman, baby) and its absurdly brief and vague. She doesn't like the fact that they aren't "expanding the tent". OK. And?

I thought it was somewhat obvious that in terms of its own best self-interest, Ben Wikler was the obvious choice for DNC chair. This made me very curious about why the DNC delegates didn’t go that way. I don’t know but I interpreted it as an internal divide between what you might call the smart Democratic establishment pols/money (they wanted Wikler) and the majority of DNC delegates who in spite of being aware that their establishment money people wanted Wikler, went the other way. Whatever that divide is all about, it appears to have persisted with the smart D establishment folks (including these union folks) continuing to divide from the non-Wikler contingent.

Barack Obama got his political start in the living room of Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. Ben Wikler got his start playing in Ann Althouse’s living room. Connect the dots sheeple!

Gross, isn't it?

Its funny how you can read all these articles and its still not clear EXACTLY what these people differed on. What were the issues? what were the strategy differences?

Just vague words.

RCOCEAN II said...

Not even clear why Wikler is better or worse than the other guy.

Aren't they also miffed that Hogg got the boot? The Old People Party didn't like that Millennial energy.

Not sure I knew that union leaders actually held party posts. How does that work, exactly? Is it kosher?

Democrat leaders are not viable representatives of the Diverse blocs of special and peculiar interests? What's next, Planned Politicianhood (PP) to remove Chosen "burdens" following progressive principles exercised with liberal license in sanctuary states?

Wikler was better because he was more focused, more competent, great at coalition building and fundraising, and had more of the killer instinct.

Martin got the gig because he's like a really good AAA hitter in baseball - successful at the level he played in (Minnesota). He's in the big leagues now and he has to deal with dissent. He's not used to it. Here in Minnesota, you can count on fawning press and no challenges from anyone within the party. That's not how it works elsewhere. I don't know if Wikler would have been better for the Donks, but I knew Martin would struggle.

I feel a premonition coming on. These lefty guys who see the problem and are edging away will start a new party with the aim of losing all the crazies and then rejoining to dominate as of old.

They quit the DNC? Why that is evidence they are rabid Trump supporters.

I suppose you could imagine this is some 3-D chess move to give the appearance of moderation but I suspect they are miffed that Wilker really does believe it is important to give working class men, especially white working class men, a say in running the Democrat Party.

"during a moment in which Democrats are still locked out of power"

"Locked out of power?" Really? You might want to consider that Democrat's embrace of every batshit crazy idea that's come down the pike in a generation has something to do with their lack of success in elections lately.

Or not, your call.

The question never answered: What is the President of the largest teachers unions doing on the board of the DNC?
I know the answer: she bought her seat there. Nonetheless, why would any person consider her direction for our nation's education anything but sham. She's there to keep the money flowing.

I imagine that these two's idea of coalition expanding strategies are counterproductive.

Rolling Stone article about the Martin/Wikler race:

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/dnc-chair-ken-martin-ben-wikler-reid-hoffman-1235212318/

Wikler was more popular with donors and interest groups, but Martin was liked by more committee members.

Where are Weingarten and Saunders going to go? They're still Democrats and still have a lot of money under their control. They'll be around after Martin is gone.

If I were a union man, even if I were a Democrat, I would not like my union leaders to be in such an incestuous entanglement with any political party.

The Teamsters have done well by playing footsie with the Republicans from time to time when they weren't feeling appreciated by the Dems, and so have a lot of police and firemens' unions.

It is exactly this frame of mind that is the reason the current leftist political tribe will never be compatible with democracy or decentralized power structures or a free society.

The Dems need to organize a Union of Undocumented Immigrants in order "expand it's coalition". Or maybe the Illegal Alien Workers of America.
