"Prince Robert also shared that his son asked him a final question: 'Papa, are you proud of me?'"

"Prince Frederik had struggled to speak for 'several days' before he died, according to Robert, 'so the clarity of these words was as surprising as the weight of the moment was profound. The answer was very easy, and he had heard it oh so many times, but at this time, he needed reassurance that he had contributed all that he possibly could in his short and beautiful existence and that he could now finally move on,' Robert explained. 'Frederik knows that he is my Superhero....'"

From "Luxembourg’s Prince Frederik dead at 22 from rare genetic disease: 'He is my superhero'" (NY Post). The disease is POLG Mitochondrial disease.

Everyone's first thought might be "inbreeding." That may be how the family accumulated numerous titles in past centuries, but Robert's mother was American (the daughter of 1960s Secretary of the Treasury, C. Douglas Dillon), and so was Frederik's mother, who doesn't appear to be from a superrich family like the Dillons. In some of the photos the family looks, for better or worse, like the family next door.

I guess the US will be offering condolences through Tom Barrrett, the Biden appointed ambassador to Luxembourg and former Milwaukee mayor. Trump apparently hasn’t gotten around to addressing such sinecures yet. What a dream job - living in the highest GDP per capita European country with essentially zero conflicts, at the US government’s expense.

You can be on top of the world, ruling a peaceful and wealthy little country, and still suffer one of the worst tragedies life has to offer, losing a child. Hug your loved ones.

The chance of the genetics lottery. Sometimes the roll comes up snake eyes.

Soul crushing. Parents who have laid their child to rest will forever have a look in their eyes that tells you a part of them died as well. No amount of wealth or status can change that.

Two fathers solves the problem. Two mothers double the risk. With a father and mother, you flip a coin.

Yes, life is fickle, you win the lotto by being born a rich king, then you die young. Sad.

He gone. Replacement waiting on Senate.
