The NBC(D) a-holes never touched or mocked Crook Joe.

No SNL for me, thanks.

Maybe instead of "legalizing comedy " the SNL writers could recognize it.

I'd settle for just generating some, once in a while.

I'm proud of myself, I managed ten seconds.

So many comedy slam dunks are out there. But the SNL cant go after them because they're mediocre and leftwing. It reminds me of Rathergate, the easiest layup in TV news comedy, where Rather lied, stonewalled, and acted like a pompous idiot and Stewart and SNL wouldn't touch it.

This is just more "Lets make fun of musk and trump" and its done badly.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

I watched about 18 seconds before I couldn't stand it anymore.

RCOCEAN II said...

In order to generate comedy, you have to recognize it.

Howard said...

Ugh Shane Gillis is a much better Trump. The GOAT of Trump impersonation.

Mr. D said...

I watched it - the idea of turning Elon Musk into a prop comic has potential, but they should have gone full Gallagher and used the chainsaw on a watermelon. The rest of it was the usual bullshit.

Also, word to the wise to their resident Trump imitator James Austin Johnson - you aren't talented enough to do anything else but Trump, so you'd better stop phoning it in or you'll be playing comedy clubs in Keokuk.

Joe Bar said...

Have you seen Shane Gillis' opening monologue? It was cringey, but hilarious.

Zavier Onasses said...

Bailed at < 1 minute. I do not do laugh tracks - or background music over dialogue.

Laugh track annoying, lacks variety.
You tube comments are unintentionally funny, though.

That was horrible. All I got from it was that they recognize that Vance is a threat to any Democrat plans to win the White House in 2028.

It's interesting how they conflate an Appalachian accent with gay speech and mannerisms. Perhaps they don't have cast members who can pull off masculine behavior believably and they have to go this route. It's not just the superior attitude towards an accent from lower class America, it's that they still use gay/effeminate as an implied slur.

It's like when Crockett talked about MTG's "butch body". The Left pretends to be on the side of gay rights, but this kind of thing gives lie to that.

Saint Croix said...

I made it about 45 seconds. I got annoyed by the "trap" joke, and then I got more annoyed by effeminate J.D. Vance, pretending to be a cat, what the fuck, and then when they started mocking Marco Rubio as a little boy incapable of speaking, holy shit, no thanks

Wince said...

Mike Meyers came out of seclusion to do that?

SNL is transitioning with a gay pretense but there is no joy. #HateLovesAbortion

The height difference between Musk and Mike Myers is too much to suspend disbelief

It's supposed to be a live performance, but that really did sound like canned laughter, right?

Michael Fitzgerald said...

This show has a live audience but they still have to use a laugh track. That is lame and shameless.

n.n said...

Canned laughter? AI generated gay.

Limited blogger said...

The actual event was so much funnier, and the guy playing Trump is really good.

Laugh track annoying
That, and the G*d awful voice is why I bailed. Don't nobody on that show have talent?

Clyde said...

Lame.

Saint Croix said...

The actor playing him is gay, apparently. I'm assuming he can play it straight (so to speak), so that's literally a choice that the writers have made -- to play J.D. Vance as a campy gay man. And people are supposed to laugh at this.

Mary Beth, how many of your close family members are homosexual? Do you think that's enough? Do you wish more of them were? Which ones? Do you wish your father had multiple male sexual partners?

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

Via Reddit: The side of history TV pundits never bring up . I recommend we all do our own research to find out the rest of the story.

Lazarus said...

Can't you do that with anything? How many of your close family members are Black or Democrats or realtors or disco afficionados or philatelists? Do you wish more of them were? One may not like what one's relatives are into. Does that make them objects for ridicule and abuse?

Also, the rule now seems to be that everything is alright except hypocrisy. If one professes to be for "gay rights," can one call people one doesn't like homosexual without being a hypocrite? There's sort of a corollary to Godwin's Law, that in any online political discussion the probability that somebody will be called gay approaches one, and it doesn't do much for online political discussions.

JD's personal Appalachian accent does make him sound a little light in his loafers. However, the DEI hire playing him is a terrible actor and not funny.

Dave Begley said...

Did Sen. Chris Murphy write this?

Insightful as it is a window to the Left's whacked out reasoning.

Lazarus said...

I got as far as Vance's campy "Excuuuse me." I'm not sure that Bowen Yang can "play it straight" though. Even before that it wasn't funny. Marco Rubio's "No inglés" was the hallmark of unimaginative writers, but even in its glory days, SNL had much unimaginative writing.

Dave Begley said...

Marco, JD and Elon are three of the smartest and most dedicated patriots and they got that unfunny slur by SNL.

Is there a quota my family has to fill before I can find that kind of slur distasteful or think it's hypocritical?

i might have appreciated it..

Inga? did you like it?

lonejustice said...

I think it was pretty funny. The best way to deal with your political adversaries is to make fun of them, not to call them Fascists or Communists.

Tomcc said...

I was in high school when SNL first aired and enjoyed the humor throughout my college years. I don't think my sense of humor has changed much since then, but this example doesn't appeal to me at all. The writers can't, or don't, lampoon both sides of the political spectrum. No imagination.

lonejustice said...

I do agree with Elon that that we should legalize comedy again. For the past few years, things were funny to you if the comedian made fun of your political opponents, but they were not funny if they made fun of the politicians you supported. Look back at old Johnny Carson and Jay Leno routines, and they skewered both parties and candidates. I support comedy that is an equal opportunity offender.

You think his impersonation of Vance was meant to be complimentary? You think Crockett's remark to MGT was meant to be complimentary?

I do not believe it is only me interpreting it that way. They clearly meant it as a slur. Don't come after me for recognizing what they are doing and calling them out on their hypocrisy.

Clyde said...

I must admit that I didn't make it far enough to see Mike Myers as Elon Musk. I put it back on and watched from that point. And... Mike Myers is still funny, even if the skit was ridiculous. But Elon is no Wayne or Dieter, that's for sure.

Lawnerd said...

Not going to watch this. Don’t need to because I know that it will not be funny or even amusing or even entertaining. Sigh, SNL used to be worth the trouble (long, long ago) but they lost their way when then became political.

Drago said...

LLR-democratical lonejustice: "I think it was pretty funny."

That does seem to be the consensus for those on the left but no one else.

RCOCEAN II said...

I asked Grok to write me a comedy sketch with Zelensky, Trump, and Musk and its funnier than SNL.
Trump: (nods enthusiastically) Mind chips! I love chips. Potato, corn, mind—best chips, folks. I’d get one, make me even smarter. I’d know, like, all the covfefes.
Zelensky: (stares) What is “covfefe”? Never mind, don’t answer. Look, we’re getting off track. The aid package—$60 billion—was approved. Can we focus on how to use it?
Trump: (squinting) Sixty billion? That’s a lot of Big Macs. I could buy Ukraine, flip it, make it a resort. Trump Towers Kyiv—beautiful, luxurious, gold toilets everywhere. You’d love it, Zelensk-man.
Musk: (snickers) Gold toilets? Primitive. I’d replace all your infrastructure with Hyperloop tubes. Your soldiers could zip to the front lines at 700 miles per hour—assuming they sign my 200-year Tesla labor contracts first.

RCOCEAN II said...

And funnier, I mean slightly less dumb and slightly less UNfunny.

rehajm said...

Jost made a joke about Trump wishing they were off the air. Too much self-flattery. I suspect Trump doesn’t care. I don’t believe their crap helps their side despite the show’s beliefs and goals…

RCOCEAN II said...

I now realize why SNL is so badly written and unfunny. NBC has fired all the writers and is letting the Producer and AI write the jokes.

Saint Croix said...

Why do you call it a "slur"? Is "male" a slur? Or "female"? Of course not. So why is "homo" a slur?

J.D. Vance is straight. So calling him a homo would be an insult. Did you miss the 20th century? How old are you?

And the way they did it, by playing Vance as a campy gay man, was both an insult to J.D. Vance, and to gay people. The humor is seriously out of date. It's like a bad joke from the 1950's.

Josephbleau said...

Mike Myers is ok but he is no Garth.

bagoh20 said...

Unfortunately, people who watch SNL will probably think that's what actually happened, and believe it the rest of their lives. Like Palin said she saw Russia from her house or Trump told us to inject bleach, or a bunch of other antifactual history.

Saint Croix said...

I loved the SNL Jeopardy skits. They're very funny.

And their horror show skit is out of this world.

I just realized that it was filmed and cut like a movie trailer, so it couldn't possibly be live. That's probably why it's the best thing I've ever seen on SNL. It's more cinematic than theatrical.

Saint Croix said...

There's a lot of bad stuff on SNL. But they've launched so many comic careers, I have a lot of fondness for the show.

JAORE said...

"Unfortunately, people who watch SNL will probably think that's what actually happened, and believe it the rest of their lives." Bago you hit upon my first reaction. There are a good 20%+ that believe ANY effort to denigrate Trump. They'll swear they watched the entire meeting video and find SNL an accurate documentary.
