I’m still waiting for my first word to be the one. A few months ago, however, the word I used to use as first word came up, so there’s that. Never change your lottery number.
I do Quordle, and my starting words are STARE, CHINO, LUMPY. The idea is to get the "U" into second position to pick up those pesky Q words, get "Y" into the last position since that's where it normally lands, and get all the rest of the common letters out there.
I have friends who used Wordle to create a side game -- they select a random five letter word, and then everyone has to use that word as their starter, regardless of how bad it is. The challenge there is that you can't just use the same words to get going. You have to "roll with it". Kind of an interesting variation.
My son hit in one with his old standard first word LEARN. He changed it but now that we compete he won't tell me what it is. I start with a random word every day so my odds of a 1/6 are pretty low. BTW, he is up 138-133-93. Statistically a tie.
For Quordle, I devised a set of three words with the same characteristics: all 6 vowels, 9 relatively common consonants, with U in second place and Y in last. But mine makes a coherent phrase. What do avant-garde composer-conductors hate most when touring the provinces with an orchestra? PICKY TONAL RUBES. I follow with two more words that get 6 more consonants, leaving only J, Q, V, W, and X: WEIGH FAMED. That leaves only 4 tries for 4 words, so I'm sometimes left guessing on things like CAUSE vs. SAUCE. And yes, PICKY and TONAL have both been the word of the day at least once.
I once used HATER, and the word was EARTH. Now I generally pick the first 5-letter word off a web page as a starter for Wordle. Then I use the Wordle solution as a Bardle starter, if accepted. Two days running, the Wordle solution was the Bardle solution.
Even with unpromising starts, four seems to be the mode number of steps.
I used to use Raise, with three vowels. I would use a variety of 3-vowel words. But when I found out you could use Adieu, that's got to be the strongest first word. And you could follow up with Stony or Story to clear out all the vowels and the major consonants.
Grant Sanders at Three Blue One Brown has a very good video on a study done at MIT about the best starting word. The idea is to find the word which gives the most possible information given the other 13,000 words on the Wordle list, taking into account what the best possible second guess would be. The MIT team determined that the best starting word is "salet," a kind of helmet worn in the middle ages. FWIW, my average dropped from almost exactly 4 to 3.7-3.8 when I adoped salet.
Thanks to "Mad" magazine, I know that the most commonly used letters in English are (in order) ETAOIN SHRDLU. So a start word that has more of the first set will likely yield a hit. My first word has always been "stain" and it has worked well so far. It didn't work for the ONE time I chose NOT to use "stain"....and it was THE word of the day. Go figure.
I got my 1 last year with AUDIO. I use TRASH a lot, so I had four letters on the first word yesterday, and got SHARE on the second word, but I knew that there would be some people out there using that as their starter word and would get a 1 out of it. Congratulations, Althouse!
…somewhere deep in the comments I wrote about the day I got it in one. Also Althouse credited with the first commenter ‘picture’ when I reproduced a wordle board…
I've used the same opening word since I started playing, even though it was the winning word about a year ago. It's a good collection of letters, but there's also something about the consistency of using it every time that makes playing off of it work.
I found a way to cheat at Wordle, but wouldn''t dream of using it. OTOH if I could figure out a way to cheat at Connections I would do so in a heartbeat.
...some of us make our own luck. Put yourself in the place of the word loader- a leftie with a taste for the benign unless current events put them in the mood to malign conservatives...
It’s no kind of achievement to have finally gotten the answer in one. I have stuck with the same word for the longest time and in the end it would need to come up and then on that day I would get it in one. I had used that word, stare, since nearly the beginning. The first few days I played using adieu, which seemed like the best word initially, but I don’t think it is. And left bank of the Charles is correct that my new word is later.
My first word is RAISE, and my second word is COUNT. By using the same two starting words, I never get the Wordle in one or two, but I (almost) always get it. I’m currently on a 510-day streak. Flex.
I played for probably two years once W. showed at the NYT and only ever used opera. Was too stubborn to change it once I began wanting to: too often too many vowels.
I've been waiting years for this. Waiting for the moment any of my friends on facebook to post that they got Wordle in one. Waiting. Then as a true Republican I would pounce. I would comment "So they finally had PENIS as the word of the day!" But alas, it has to be this blog which I'll never get to post on again.

Well done- just under the wire for the year!
I got the same word in one, which makes up for all the times that word yielded no letters.
In ancestor game MOO, best first word was adieu.
Seriously? Your first word only had an E and a U as vowels?
I have 1 that I guessed with one letter, and 33 that I guessed with 2 letters!! I must have a great first word!!
I use a different word every day, one with no repeat letters. Sometimes it's hard to think of one. I did it on my first try once (FORTY).
I’m still waiting for my first word to be the one. A few months ago, however, the word I used to use as first word came up, so there’s that. Never change your lottery number.
I got my 1 and done a couple of months ago with faith. Changed my first word since then.

A fitting and upbeat way to end a year fraught with lots of changes, lots of mischief, but generally an optimistic ending.
That’s happened to me twice now.Haven’t settled on a new starter word yet.

Sooner or later, you were going to need a new starting word...

My daughter had exactly the same result/success as AA. First time for her as well. Alas, I'm not that fortunate -- yet.
My wife got it with her start word yesterday. Had to happen sooner or later.
I guess I should mention that it's her regular one.
Congrats! A wordle in one is equivalent to a hole in one.

I've never gotten a word in one!

My first word is house. Three vowels, common e placement, and the status of h.
I don't wordle. But I think if I did, I would always use today's word as tomorrow's 1st guess. Why not?
Impressive. I got 2/6 the other day -- my best. Hat's off to Althouse. HNY to all!
Wordle in one is the definition of Shithouse Luck.

LOL
Same for me yesterday! Yay us! I haven't considered changing my word ... it's been good to me although my GF has changed hers to TREAD.
ouch!

My guess is that Althouse’s new word is LATER.

For a long time my first words were TRUMP and VOTER just to ANNOY the NYT.
I’m thinking of switching to RULER and TRUMP, TODAY.
Or TRUMP and DANCE if I’n feeling HAPPY

WordleBot says the best starter word is "crane" fwiw
