"America is not going to save Ukraine. Maybe we need Mr. Trump — brazen and unscrupulous — to finally say so out loud and act accordingly."
Writes Megan K. Stack, in "Trump Can Speed Up the Inevitable in Ukraine" (NYT)(free-access link).
"Ukrainians would be hung out to dry, and Mr. Putin could end up attacking again or expanding his imperial designs to other neighbors. Mr. Trump should do it anyway."

who is more corrupt? Biden/team mob-puppet or Putin? hmmm... It's close.
Unscrupulous? She's just throwing big orange-man-bad words around. I'm curious how Stack thinks Trump's unscrupulousness can work to bring peace to the Ukraine.
A truly unscrupulous president would let the war grind on indefinitely. Kind of like what Joe Biden has been doing.
Ukraine is vintage ethnic Spring and a "burden" of progressive proportion. Will no one abort this planned parody of urbane times? NYT has regrets.
Realism is the best foreign policy
Russia is going to be crushed by low energy prices.
Fighting them militarily while energy prices are high is just really stupid.
Unless your goal is to get a lot of people killed and do some war profiteering.
You know, if you don't like the consequences of wars, then it's best not to start them.
Looking at youVictoria Nuland, and you, Hamas
Dozens of people, and often hundreds, are dying every day in this grinding war. Mr. Trump should seize the chance to save lives.
A brutally honest article about the Ukrainian debacle. The Professor should ask the same question about this article: why wasn't it published before the election.
If the GDP numbers remotely reflected reality, Germany could see Russia off by itself, never mind with the backing of the EU. In reality all of Europe will be swiftly and deservedly crushed when President Trump pulls support for their follies.
Such bullshit. Putin was in his box during Trump’s first term. Trump didn’t hand Afghanistan over to the Taliban. Trump is not going to give Ukraine to Russia, which was already losing ground before Biden’s recent escalation.
Imagine a world where skillful diplomacy over the past 30 years had guided the US and Russia into a cooperative and peaceful relationship. Imagine how much different the world would be now if Russia were at least neutral towards us rather than allied with China and Iran against us. Imagine a world without a devastated Ukraine. It isn't hard to do.
Anything Trump did would be bad even if it's good.
There is no sovereign country called Ukraine. It’s entirely a CIA puppet state and has been since the 2014 coup. Except for two brief periods, Ukraine was just a warlord tribe, one of many competing in Eastern Europe, where the official boundaries change constantly. Inserting your country into the murderous squabbles of Eastern Europe is as stupid as you can get.
Maybe Naomi Beinart will cheer up a little bit when she finds out that virtually all the soldiers maimed and killed in Ukraine were male. She could dedicate her life going forward to rectifying that inequity.
we've shut down the US Embassy in Kiev, in preparation for the upcoming WWIII..
Every Single human on Earth regrets this upcoming disaster..
Except for De WeEvil, who is not exactly a human
Joe Biden has declared, that the US will fight until the last Ukrainian dies..
OR, there bribe money runs out
Yes.
Trump’s alleged (without evidence) brazenness and alleged (without evidence) lack of scruples will do nothing to end this war. His well-known negotiation skills might.
To paraphrase George C. Scott. Trump, you magnificent bastard! I read your book! And right about now Zelenskyy and Putin should be reading it too.
Imagine a world where an Iran-ophile wasn't elected President of the United States.
There's no good answer, as long as Putin and Russia are willing to keep fighting. Biden just made it worse by releasing the ATACMS restrictions.
In a world where the West made rational decisions after the Cold War, Russia is a member of NATO and SEATO is in excellent position to confront China. Boris Yeltsin is universally lionized as the first and greatest hero of modern Russia whose personal courage literally salvaged democracy. No one outside Russia has ever heard of Vladimir Putin, who is a clever but ultimately unremarkable senior official.
This is why the neos shouldn't have tried to loot the former Warsaw Pact, especially the supply of children.
Did you forget Russia?
If only Russia wasn't Russia.
The poor girl has been abused by her parents. Or perhaps she is just modeling their behavior.
Ukraine fires UK Storm Shadow cruise missiles into Russia, a day after using US ATACMS ~ Reuters
“We cannot allow [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to win,” Starmer said. “I think that would be extremely bad for security in Europe, I think with the North Korean element it will be extremely bad for security in the Indo-Pacific.” ~ Keir Starmer
Starmer is right. Allowing Putin to get away with his annexation of Crimea and 'hybrid' war in Eastern Ukraine is exactly what gave him the confidence to launch a full-scale war. If he prevails now, he may invade NATO next, while China annexes Taiwan and cordons off the South China Sea.
Mr. Trump is described as "brazen and unscrupulous". This would better describe the diplomats who cynically led Ukraine on to believe that they could join NATO and we would protect them, while intending all along to sacrifice Ukrainian youth for the sake of weakening Russia. Sickening.
well thats not exactly true, but it is roughly partitioned by the dneiper river, Russians to the East, Polish sympathies to the West
Russia has roughly the same GDP as Italy.
@doctrev
If only. And it seems American foreign policy is still deeply rooted in the cold war mentality that caused that blunder.
I humbly disagree. Part of the Peace deal will include a green light for Western oil companies to rebuild Russian oil infrastructure and a pipeline to China. Thereby reducing the dependence on Middle East oil, specifically Iran.
If the Trump administration brokers a deal to end the Ukrainian unpleasantness, Donald will likely be awarded the Noble Piece Price.
My mind is blown that Biden waited until now to offer land mines. Just like how he waited until the Ukrainian's southern offensive stalled to offer cluster ammo.
Ukraine has a manpower issue. land mines are a partial solution to that issue.
Enough talk about Trump not supporting Ukraine. Biden was a slow walking failure.
Ah yes, the Domino Theory[TM]
Victoria Nuland was in Maidan Square, along with John McCain, encouraging the overthrow of the democratically elected government there. Maidan snipers fired into the crowd, the US blamed the democratically elected government, and the nazis took over, and it's been civil war ever since. We have been involved in that civil war for all of that time too, so calling out Russia for stepping in is more pot, kettle type talk.
"I humbly disagree. Part of the Peace deal will include a green light for Western oil companies to rebuild Russian oil infrastructure and a pipeline to China. Thereby reducing the dependence on Middle East oil, specifically Iran"
What in the hell....
Neither Russia nor China need "help" building pipelines between their nations and the only oil infrastructure where western nations might participate would be repairs to the pipelines skirting across Ukraine into western europe.
"Imagine a world where an Iran-ophile wasn't elected President of the United States."
Not just an Iran-ophile...but a psycho-Iran-o-builder-upper at the expense of all else in the Middle East with an eye on giving Iran a few nukes to challenge obambi's true enemies: the Israelis
LLR-democratical Rich: "Allowing Putin to get away with his annexation of Crimea and 'hybrid' war in Eastern Ukraine is exactly what gave him the confidence to launch a full-scale war. If he prevails now, he may invade NATO next, while China annexes Taiwan and cordons off the South China Sea."
LOL
Putin is going to go after NATO eh? With what?
He couldn't even properly maintain a couple of squadrons in Syria along with a few thousand mercs.
Russia is a nation with a GDP of 3/4s that of Italy. Russia couldn't defeat Poland.
Rich is too dumb to be posting on this subject, even if its just cutting and pasting things that might have been plausible back in the 1970's.
Hey Rich, the 1970's called and they want their Euro-invasion scenarios back that fed into Tom Clancy's very good book Red Storm Rising.
But those days are long gone.
Since they are all on the same team, equal.
After all, the russki oligarchs paid enough to the bidens to make sure they were on the same team during all the critical periods.
Shame that the CIA and others, had their evil hands involved there. Tulsi thinks there are bio labs all over Ukraine, no idea, but wouldn't put past the CIA and others.
Hopefully Trump will do what he does best, figure out a deal. No matter what happens, it will be generations before Ukraine recovers. and longer than that before some of the millions of land mines are removed.
It is Europes problem, from the start. now that DJT is here, Nato needs to step up, with euro money, not US money.
As I understand it, Trumps policy is have a kick ass military, and only commit it to war for a good reason. That would be a refreshing change from the past 50 years.
And yes, Congress should vote on any overseas adventures. Obama and Biden, and HRC,and Bush, really acted like they could do anything they wanted, as long as they weren't anywhere near the results.
Let me be the first to admit that he is confused about what is taking place in this conflict, and has nothing of value to add to the conversation.
@chuck .. you're not wrong
The fundamental problem is that once you get inside the natural barriers surrounding the Eurasian Hordelands via the Artic, Baltic, Polish, Bessarabia, Black Sea, Caucasus, or Central Asian Gaps, there isn't anything to keep you from rolling all the way from Ukraine to Mongolia. The Russians are not without reason to be paranoid. At the height of the Cold War the Russians covered all of these gaps via their satellite countries and then lost coverage on them at the end of it. Fundamentally it was then a choice of either making them feel secure that the Gaps wouldn't be used as invasion routes by folding them into a pan-European cooperative, or having them make trouble as they tried to either physically control the Gaps or arrange for friendly governments to cover them.
Howard. There's nothing wrong with Russias oil infrastructure. Just that the are very inefficient at using it. No. We'll sell Europe our lower priced gas and oil. Russia is going to be on its own foir awhile.
He should but he won't. All the right people don't like him.
You wait until the junkie is jonesing and then you up the price.
