"Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 86 days as the presumptive, and now, official Democratic nominee for president without holding an official press conference."

Says Fox News, just Fox News, but isn't it true?

It seems impossible. I'm reading about this and that podcast, and an occasional interview with a mainstream newsperson, such as Fox's Bret Baier coming up, but never a news conference. How is it possible to rise to the presidency without one attempt at handling a press conference?

Democrats actually poll people and focus group people BEFORE and AFTER they meet with Kamala and have found that people are MORE LIKELY to vote for Trump if they speak with Kamala.

How could this happen? Easily, if those who support her don't care about press conferences, don't need to distinguish her policy ideas from those of her competitor's. There's a world of "automatic" voters out there who can't change their minds about a Democrat or about Trump.

She's not a quick thinker. She lacks self confidence yet is extremely ambitious. That combo makes her fear unscripted events because she says dumb things and then tries to compensate with that odd laugh.

Given how Soocy is making life painful for KJP, I can't imagine that anything short of a tongue bath would be low-pressure enough for Kamala.

By contrast, President Trump is equally at ease in a hostile interrogation as he is with Theo Von or Tucker Carlson. He might be in trouble if Kamala had the basic intellectual firepower to handle softball reporting, but that is the problem with genuine DEI hires. A problem that Condi Rice, whatever her flaws, never had.

I'm no Harris supporter, but do candidates typically hold press conferences? As opposed to rallies, interviews, etc.? Public apperances are a tool; Dems are picking the ones that suit their anxious, ill-prepared candidate--so what?

RCOCEAN II said...

Democrats, including the Democrat elite that runs the News media, dont care. They didn't care that Biden was non-functional, its only when thought he would lose after his debate that they dumped him. Again: They just don't care about their Presidents being compentent - just holding the office. They live by the Al Davis motto: "Just win, baby. Just win".

Democrats vote for "The Machine". Kamala is "Kosher", all she'll have to do is smile for the cameras, read off a telepromter, and sign off on whatever her Chief of Staff or Cabinet officers do.

Do the sainted "Independents" and "Moderates" care? We'll see.

Harris, Obama, and Biden political views align almost 100 percent with the News excecutives and Owners that run the MSM (except maybe Fox). Accordingly, the news media is an unpaid member of the DNC. Yes, and it has taken Fox News 86 days to notice. And they're the only news organization that seems to enjoy an adversarial relationship with the President's spokes-thingie, at those Press briefings.

Of course, when you're a Presidential Candidate from the preferred party, enjoying the strong defensive line of the Legacy Progressive Democrat Mainstream Media, almost anything is possible on the field, because no play is illegal - there are no referees. As we have amply seen by CBS's antics over the past couple of weeks, first sandbagging a journalist by giving his subject the questions in advance, then admonishing him for asking real questions with a Maoist struggle session after. And then the capper, substituting answers in an interview with whats-her-name, oh yeah. That Presidential Candidate you were talking about.

It's become so accepted even Ms. Althouse is surprised she didn't notice. But: What is there to notice? We already know she's clueless.

Trump speaks without notes or staff-prepared talking point cards. Harris can't answer questions unless teleprompter with responses is operational and within eyeshot. Vance has proven to be outstanding VP choice, both fierce attack dog and cuddly golden retriever, while Walz bumbles, frowns, and goes bug-eyed on cue.

I think press conferences is a bit of shorthand here. It is not uncommon for presidential candidates to have private meetings with various media editorial boards as well as generally making themselves available to the press traveling with their campaign (remember the photo of the press pool gazing adoringly at Hillary Clinton?). To my knowledge Harris has done none of these, as well as several news organizations that could be considered Democrat-friendly (The NYT and Time magazine, IIRC for example) publicizing that she has refused their interview requests.

Now, the Vice President was invited to appear with them but declined.
She also declined to be at that Bloomberg conversation or to have a conversation with Bloomberg, I should say.
She also declined an interview with Time magazine.
Declining media hits really isn’t an indicator of mental fitness, is it?"

So, kamala-la-la-la declined the very CNBC event P-Inga is crowing about along with the Bloomberg event, just today, which was aggressively anti-Trump, where Trump did show up, AND kamala-la-la-la is the first major candidate to run screaming away from a soft-ball, inevitably friendly and fawning Time "interview" (wink wink).

Harris top advisors have been consistently named as her sister, her brother-in-law, Doug, and Eric Holder. Maybe Oprah, probably Liz Cheney. (Ambivalent Obama further damaged her with his hectoring "my Black brothers" broadside last week, so no friend there.)

Everyone else is either recently-hired staff, or holdovers from Biden campaign office - fighting for turf and attention. It's apparent Harris is rudderless, getting poor advice from her hand-picked top advisors, and perhaps listening to the seasoned old Biden campaign staff. How else could she so stupidly pick Walz as her VP running-mate instead of Shapiro or the Astronaut Senator? (See I can't even recall Gabby Gifford's husband's name!)

Althouse, I can appreciate your bafflement how a major presidential candidate has never had a press conference. However, we are living in baffling times. Biden won running a campaign from his basement where he literally read the stage directions from the teleprompter and was showing obvious signs of senility. We had a coordinated censorship campaign between the deep state, the media, and the tech companies over the Hunter Biden laptop "hoax". We have had, I dunno, dozens of conspiracy theories proven to be true or at least more accurate than not, while our media pushes obvious lies. Our current administration supports both an invasion of our southern border and the non-prosecution of crime, except for legally bizarre cases it brings against Trump and J6 protestors who get a year in prison for "parading" while rioters are released with no charges. We have college campuses overtly supporting terrorists and making statements that would make Hitler smile. We have one party supporting universal vote by mail, which only a few decades ago was agreed by everyone to be a sign of massive vote fraud and non-democratic institutions. I can go on. What is normal?
