"Just moments ago, Joe Biden stated that our supporters are garbage."

"He's talking about the border patrol, he's talking about nurses, he's talking about teachers, he's talking about everyday Americans who love their country and want to dream big again and support you, Mr. President. And I hope their campaign is about to apologize for what Joe Biden just said. We are not garbage. We are patriots who love America and thank you for running Mr. President."

Said Marco Rubio to Donald Trump, on stage at Trump's rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania last night. Click the video below, which is cued up to the spot. Trump appears to be hearing this news of President Biden's statement for the first time.

Trump reacts: "Wow. That's terrible.... Remember Hillary? She said 'deplorable' and then she said 'irredeemable.' Right? But she said 'deplorable.' That didn't work out. 'Garbage,' I think is worse. Right? But he doesn't know. You have to please forgive him. Please forgive him! For he not knoweth what he said."

I believe that last bit was an attempt to evoke the words of Jesus"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."

Trump continues: "These people. Terrible terrible terrible — to say a thing like that, but he really doesn't know. He really, honestly, he doesn't. And I'm convinced that he likes me more than he likes Kamala. Convinced. But that's a terrible thing."

It was a terrible thing to say, but you can see that Trump knows that Biden's rhetoric — like Hillary's "deplorable" — was an excellent gift to his campaign. And it came just as Kamala Harris was delivering her big closing-argument speech that was supposed to reach out to all Americans and to characterize her as the one who, unlike Trump, embraced everybody.

In the final days of her campaign, Ms. Harris is trying to separate the man from his movement. Gone is the framing of Republicans as “extreme MAGA,” the catchphrase attack adopted by Mr. Biden during the 2022 midterms. Instead, in ways big and small, Ms. Harris is extending an open hand to Republicans who may have voted for the former president in the past....
Some in the Democratic Party — including the man who lives in the White House illuminated behind her on Tuesday — appear to be still reckoning with that new approach. Just before she took the stage, President Biden seemed to refer to those who support Mr. Trump as “garbage”...

Just before she took the stage!

... in a campaign call that quickly ricocheted across the internet, was seized upon by Republicans and the president himself soon sought to clarify on social media. Mr. Biden said he meant only the comedian at Mr. Trump’s Sunday rally who had called Puerto Rico an “island of garbage.”
What Biden said — here's the video — is: "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of [Latinos?] is unconscionable. And it's un-American. It's totally contrary to everything we've done, everything we've been."

Why did Biden put himself out there yesterday, taking chances, stepping on her big speech? Does he just not know what he's doing? That's one of the things Trump said about it, but the other was "I'm convinced that he likes me more than he likes Kamala." Don't overlook the possibility that Biden is trying to hurt Kamala. It reminds me of the time Biden showed up at a White House press briefing and pulled attention away from a big Harris speech. Did he interfere on purpose?

And what was that event of Biden's yesterday? I'm reading news articles and it's not easy to discern. For example, the NYT has "Trump and His Allies Link Biden’s ‘Garbage’ Comment to 2016 ‘Deplorables’ Remark/Within minutes of the clip of President Biden’s remarks going viral, the Trump campaign and others were using it to attack Kamala Harris and Democrats." You'd think somewhere in the first few paragraphs, we'd read about why Biden was sitting at a desk talking to a camera. But no. I have no idea what that event was supposed to be. The camera angle and fuzziness make it look like second-rate social media.

Googling, I get to the White House official page and see that it was a phone call: "Remarks by President Biden on a Call with Voto Latino."

IN THE COMMENTS: Kate writes:
The Weave here is so beautiful. The throughline: "terrible". He mixes in Hillary's deplorables, adds pity and forgiveness for Joe while emphasizing that Joe knows nothing, and then slides a delicious dig at Kamala before returning to "terrible". Anyone who can't appreciate The Weave should study this reaction. And it's all off-the-cuff.

And the Jesus joke. Who off-handedly tosses in a Jesus-on-the-cross parody? Is that a sacrilege? Or is it striking evidence that he really is a Christian? To think of forgiveness is to think of Jesus Christ.

ADDED: I can see that the White House transcript, linked above, has a transcription that is either accurate or designed to support the explanation that Biden was using the word "garbage" only to describe the remark the comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made about Puerto Rico ("floating island garbage"). Here's the transcription:
The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.

The idea is that "his supporter" — singular — is Tony Hinchcliffe, and it only seems to be plural because of the possessive apostrophe-s. The 2 sentences are connected into one, and the "his" in "his supporter's/supporters" and the "his" in "his demonization" are not the same "his."

The first "his" is Trump's — Trump's supporter's/supporter — and the second "his" is Hinchcliffe's — Hinchcliffe's demonization.

This is the linguistic problem of coreference. You can explore it by replacing the 2 usages of the word "his" with referents. There are 2 interpretations:

1. The only garbage I see floating out there is Trump's supporter’s — Trump's supporter’s demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.
2. The only garbage I see floating out there is Trump's supporters. Trump's demonization of [Latinos?] is unconscionable. And it's un-American.

A problem with interpretation #1 is that the word "is" appears twice. You have to see Biden as restarting the sentence. In the first effort, the subject is "garbage," but then he rearranges it, making "demonization" the subject. They could have used punctuation to stress this idea: "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable...."

I feel as though I'm deeper into the weeds than anyone will go. Is anyone still with me? Anyone interested in the problems of coreference and misperceived coreference? I doubt it. I suspect Harris supporters will snap up interpretation #1 and Trump supporters will laugh at the apostrophe argument and find interpretation #2 so obvious that I'm wasting their time.

Harris is in the enviable position of knowing she has a machine behind her generating votes via mail-in ballot harvesting in the swing states, and that anything she or Biden or anyone else says doesn't matter as much as keeping her machine running, creating votes. However, she also knows that without the efforts of her machine those votes, the sole reason she has a chance to win this election, would not exist because she is a lousy candidate running on a lousy platform. Her election win will be, well, garbage.

A few disparate thoughts on this: Trump like many of us was raised reading the King James Version of the Bible, which is fun to emulate with its early 17th century language but also to my ear very beautiful. Trump like the Greek and Roman classicists puts a lot of emphasis on beauty, clearly appreciates beauty in many forms and derides it's opposite.
At this point, where the momentum has shifted toward him Trump has been displaying a lot of magnanimity and compassion towards Biden. This manner has completely flummoxed Leftists who continuously condemn him as a hater, a racist, a nazi etc. The McDonalds campaign stunt, the Rogan conversation, his actual speech at MSG all shine in sharp contrast to the evil dictator caricature the Left wants him to be. His decision to treat Biden with extraordinary goodwill is also unmistakably contrasted with Harris's inability to explain how she came to replace him and the fact she has shown little respect for the man who made her a viable candidate for the brief time that she was.
That's enough for now. Others have probably already made the other points I had in mind. (I really like this new ability to respond to comments + or - as needed!)

The Regime Toadies have to lie about why they call us terrible people. They are projecting all of their actual actions on us.

In the end you are right though the words do not matter. It is going to come down to who wins in the arena of violence and that will settle who is right or wrong.

I believe it. Not preposterous at all. This election comes pretty close to generating a crisis of conscience for the professor. There are no good choices.

Plus, I don't think she would lie about that. Not her style. In fact, she hates duplicity. If she had decided, she would have said so but left the decision to be communicated later (if at all) because she (I am guessing) would not want to influence her readership in any way (though, like a Shrodinger cat scenario even her undecidededness is influential.)

So, just to recap.
Kamala Harris has spent the last two weeks literally screaming that Trump is a Nazi, a White Supremacist, and all of his followers are Nazi Racists, that MSG was apparently full of Jewish Nazis. Today her campaign is sending out notice that her closing week will be all about Unity.

Joe Biden literally took millions of dollars from multiple foreign nationals while Vice President, hid the take among 28 shell companies fictionally headed by various members of his family, and had himself referred to as the "Big Guy" as he socked away the funds which were, of course, a down payment on affecting US policy- both domestic and international.

And Joe refers to me as garbage?

Both Kamala and Joe are awful human beings. Slugs. Mediocre humans finding themselves in lofty powerful positions of influence and wealth. They are the walking definition of the death of a republic.

The choice this election is abundantly clear. Don't talk to me about Trump's character. Character is what shows when the cameras are not on, the speech is not on the teleprompter and it's just you doing either what's right, or what's wrong.

Trump will surround himself with a wide variety of people, differing opinions, and a chance to disinfect our government.
Harris (and Biden) are the infection that needs to be cut out.

Since reporters are so close to the Harris campaign, I wish one would ask some of the "supporters" existing the buses at her rallies how much they are paid to attend. At her DC rally yesterday, there was a long line of buses (Myers Coach Lines, Export, PA) with thousands of attendees. And hundreds of them have attended multiple rallies.

Also, there is an interesting article today at the Federalist regarding the Harris campaign's paid Reddit posters spamming threads with pro-Harris comments and article links. And also, creating fake community notes at X. I suspect we have paid Harris posters at every news and blog site. They are usually easy to spot because they are obviously idiots who believe every media lie put forth by MSNBC no matter how much evidence is provided to them proving the lies.

A message from Buzz Aldrin, now officially considered a garbage person by the New Soviet Democraticals, like P-Inga:

"A half-Century ago, it was an honor to serve my country in the effort to put a human being on the Moon. I am proud of what we accomplished then and I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of an enduring human presence in space – it is a calling that runs through every fiber of my being.

Over time, I have seen our government’s approach to space wax and wane. But under the first Trump Administration, I was impressed to see how human space exploration was elevated as a policy of high importance again. Under President Trump’s first term, America saw a revitalized interest in Space, and his Administration reignited national efforts to get back to the Moon, and push on to Mars. The Trump Administration also reinstituted the National Space Council, and our Nation’s defense was enhanced with the creation of the U.S. Space Force – increasingly important as space becomes a contested domain. At the same time, I have been enthused and excited by the great advancements in the private sector space economy, led by visionaries like @elonmusk. These are concrete accomplishments that align with my concerns and America’s policy priorities.

America is facing serious and difficult challenges both at home and abroad. The Presidency requires clarity in judgement, decisiveness, and calm under pressure that few have a natural ability to manage, or the life experience to successfully undertake. It is a job where decisions are made that routinely involve American lives – some urgently but not without thought. The job requires sober analysis of frightening scenarios, and the instinct to lead with resolve. From the skies over Korea in air-to-air combat to navigating, landing, and walking on the Moon, I appreciate this kind of pressure. I know what it is like to have to make these kinds of decisions, with firmness and follow-through.

In this election, we have a choice and we all have one vote. For some, the choice may not be easy – but in times of uncertainty real leaders are most needed – to guide and inspire a people, to push through the noise, recognize what really matters, and accomplish missions critical to all citizens. Most Americans rightly consider it an honor to cast their vote for a leader they believe will best serve the nation. For me, for the future of our country, to meet enormous challenges, and for the proven policy accomplishments above, I believe we are best served by voting for @realDonaldTrump. I wholeheartedly endorse him for President of the United States. Godspeed President Trump, and God Bless the United States of America."

DONALD TRUMP’S CAMPAIGN WAS LEFT scrambling Sunday night after roast-comic Tony Hinchcliffe made insulting jokes about Hispanic and black people on stage at the ex-president’s Madison Square Garden rally.
The lines sparked immediate backlash and even condemnation from fellow Republicans. But four top campaign sources said it could have been even worse.
“He had a joke calling [Vice President Kamala] Harris a ‘cunt,’” a campaign insider involved in the discussions about the event told The Bulwark. “Let’s say it was a red flag.”
Hinchcliffe’s remarks—and the ensuing backlash—has sparked questions about how such an offensive speech was allowed at such a high-profile rally; whether it was deliberate; and why a presidential campaign would elevate a roast-master comic edgelord in the closing days of a tight race for the White House.
Campaign staffers had asked all speakers to submit drafts of their speeches ahead of time—before they were loaded into the teleprompter—according to the aforementioned sources. Once the objectionable “cunt” joke was spotted, the sources said, a staffer asked Hinchcliffe to strike it. He complied.
Those sources insisted that they did not spot the other objectionable lines in Hinchcliffe’s speech prior to him delivering it because they were ad-libbed. Hinchcliffe couldn’t be reached for comment.
The shock comic took the stage early during the MSG rally. In the course of delivering his eleven-minute-and-forty-second set, he called Puerto Rico an island of trash and joked about a black person carving watermelons for Halloween.
About three hours after the performance, as condemnation was pouring in from left, right, and center, the Trump campaign was forced to take the rare step of distancing itself from one of their speakers—though it only separated itself from the “trash” line and not the watermelon one.The guy auditioned his GARBAGE line a few days at a night club before rolling it at MSG. TRUMP campaign is either so incompetent to not have checked this out or thet LIE just as the KING does. I told you trump started the GARBAGE inuendo little bit before with his AMERICA stick and thought he could sneak this one in and got caught with his ass sticking out. And then says'' ah thats nothing just like "I'll just throw em some paper towels..hope you aint got kids...

Yes. I did patent work for the USPS before I retired. At the time, they were adding tracking information front and back. If I remember correctly, it was a bar code on the bottom on the front and in invisible ink across the middle of the back. The front and back were photographed, and all of this is put in a database, where it remains for a couple weeks or so. Then, at the big mail processing centers, the envelopes are scanned, sorted, routed, and that information saved. Not really that different from what FedEx and UPS do, except much faster, and in greater bulk.

Some of the bar coded information indicate the originating office, processing center, destination, and a record tracking number (that includes originating numbers). The sorting machines operate almost blindingly fast, and unfortunate things happen as a result. When they do, the USPS has the information, somewhere on the envelope to (re)identify it and get it where it’s supposed to go, no matter how mangled it is.

That’s where his Godwin’s Law came from (the listserve groups, not the cyberia-l, etc groups). And I would have drinks with him at a Cyberlaw conference in Austin every year. He went on to be general counsel for the EFF, then WikiFoundation. Good guy, though, as a UT Law grad, he was reliably liberal.

Trump is making a quick campaign stop here in New Mexico. They tried to book the Downtown Civic Plaza Auditorium, but the city denied it, claiming there was scheduled plumbing work. There is not. The city is also claiming Trump owes $400K for a rally he had in the past - the only time the city has tried to collect money for this type of event. Now the NM Land Commissioner, a democrat, won't allow parking at a location near the event, the first time this won't be allowed. This morning a caller to a local radio talk show called in response to the above: "This is it - I am finally going to get off my undecided butt and vote for Trump. I'm on my way to early voting now." It does seem many people are getting tired of democrat's version of democracy in action.

Kamala had a lot of crust last night when she called George III a "petty tyrant". But then she goes into her final windup and asserts that Trump is a "petty tyrant". Not a good idea when you are running for President of the United States. I'll cut the Kackler a bit of slack. Occasionally the Bad Orange Man slips and does something similar.
