I read several blogs every day as well as Althouse, including Legal Insurrection, Powerline, Instapundit, and others, when I have the time. I rarely read the comments, because most of them are just an echo chamber. I don't want to live in that hive, whether it is all pro-Trump or all anti-Trump. But Legal Insurrection is also hosted by a law professor, like Althouse, so I often read their comments. They are almost all pro-Trump, but here are some of the comments they posted on the Trump/Musk interview, which makes me think that the comments here on Althouse are not reflective of the conservative/Trump supporters view posted here:
"I am not a #NeverTrumper. But you need to get your head out of your butt and see that what he’s doing is destroying his chances of winning. I want him to win. I am going to vote for him. But your idol worship crazy is just self-defeating. You want Trump to win? Stop backing his every false move and step that will only alienate the potential swing voters he needs. He has your Trump cult vote, and he has my anything but the commie-commie ticket vote. But what about the votes he actually NEEDS, the ones he does not have? This self-indulgent blather is not going to win them over. It’s going to alienate them and make them think he’s self-absorbed, butt hurt, and a bit of a whiner. NO ONE likes a whiner. Elon Musk gave Trump an opportunity to reach people, redefine Kamala, and define himself. He failed on every point there. Again we have fallen behind, right now the media is winning. If Trump can’t bring himself to do a good job he should promote J.D. Vance to head of the ticket so someone who actually is doing a good job could bring us back ahead. Attacking Harris as joyless in his interviews makes him look well petty and like he doesn’t care about real issues (otherwise he would bring them up). I voted against him in primary, I voted for him for president, I donated to his presidential campaign after he won, and I am voting for him in November. I even very consistently defended him when he moderated the Republican Platform in ways I don’t like (i.e. on abortion) because once someone wins the nomination we do have to back their judgement on what policy preferences could win. I am not lying to myself or anyone else that the train wreck last night was a smash hit for reaching the people we need to win over.

CNN is spooked! They have been sounding nervous all day. NPR was the same way this morning. I'd like to put it all down to the Trump/Musk conversation last night, but it just seems like there must be more going on.
I just discovered yesterday that John Kerry, while Secretary of State, repudiated the Monroe Doctrine at an OAS meeting in Washington, DC, on Nov 18, 2013. Was everyone aware of that? How did I miss that?

Astonishing.

Drago’s obsession with Walz’s military service is becoming ridiculous. What do you think swiftboating Walz is going to do? You think he’ll be dropped from the ticket? You think it will bring more votes to Bonespurs Trump? Democrats know that those who are swiftboating him are simply Trumpists that put Trump above their country and fellow veterans. I guess you still haven’t realized that there are millions of veterans and civilians who do not give a shit about these smears. You don’t speak for all veterans, stop pretending you do. There have been plenty of veterans who have publicly said these attacks on Walz’s military service are despicable. Your stupid repetitious “Stolen Valor/blue Falcon” shit is nutty.
I dont understand why people are going to vote for trump when trump is telling them he dont need your vote or want your vote ,he says hes got more than he needs and you wont have to vote again(sounds like some election perps lined up to not certify votes) he certainly is the laziest campaign guy going ..I wonder what part of "I dont need your vote" the trumpers dont understand> could they have possibly missed him shouting it out? it is weird ...? look it up he has said it numerous times, trumpers usually obey makes no sense why they would vote for him when he dont want them too?

I finally finished Kelly’s interview of Nate Silver. I had found him to be an impressive fellow, and then he let it slip that he was casting a vote for Harris-Walz and complete economic and societal collapse.
You can keep repeating them, but your attempts at nick names have failed.
Instead you are like the desperate elderly uncle, striving for relevance at the reunion. Much like Trump's current persona. Enjoy your time as Fat Elvis. as it's not long before your irrellevsnce.
I've told Mutaman before, and I'll tell him again now: bonespurs are a real thing, that appears on x-rays and therefore cannot be faked, and does in fact disqualify someone from serving in the military. Anyone who accuses someone with bone spurs of draft dodging is therefore a liar or a fool.
He says you won't have to vote for him again because this is his last election. How stupid do you have to be not to understand that? It's not a threat of tyranny, it's a simple statement that, win or lose, he's not going to run again.
Issue isn't whether bone spurs are a valid excuse for draft dodging, issue is- did Trump pay an MD off to lie about this. He can't remeber the name of the MD, he can't produce any x-rays, and there are facts which indicate that the exemption was bs.
Now that the left wants the Bidens gone so they can savor the joy of the first 1/4 black, and 1/2 Indian woman who never got a vote, all the truth they have been hiding and lying about is starting to dribble out. WHY haven't we been told the truth about THIS before now??? HMMMMMMM....Very Interesting how our government now works just like the Soviet Unions, isn't it??
"Normally you wouldn’t expect the New York Times to pursue a story that contains negative information about top-echelon Democrats, but lo and behold, on Tuesday evening the outlet dropped an article revealing that First Son Hunter Biden requested help from the U.S. Embassy in Rome to secure a lucrative deal for the Ukrainian gas giant, Burisma, whose board he famously sat on. Here's the kicker: this was in 2016 while Joe Biden was vice president."
"How many more Americans need to be raped and killed for Democrats to become outraged. It seems like normal Americans are the only ones screaming into a void. "
One more DJT thought. Looks matter, if he could somehow squeeze in some lipo in the midsection that would help. Also, weird to say for a billionaire elected official, but he needs to upgrade his wardrobe. The 2 best things I can say about Kamala are that she is pretty and she is most often cutely dressed. Come on Donald, try to impress Melania more!!
Rep Omar won her D primary race. Darn it. I hoped Samuels would take her down. The R in the general has no chance, of course, but found it interesting that he is Republican Dalia Al-Aqidi, Iraqi American journalist and self-described secular Muslim who calls Omar pro-Hamas.
Gotta love life. Got up early to get in some extra work, and ran into technical issues and can't work. Sorry for all the posts. Will make a Senate prediction now. R's lose no seats. Cruz in TX will be the closest, but I think he wins. I wonder if Tester in MT and even Brown in OH go down, as well as the WV seat. That will net the R's 3 new senate seats. Tester and Brown are becoming long in the tooth, combined with DJT winning their states bigly, I think the D does down.
This is one of those moments where we get a good idea who is telling the truth and who is lying. So let's give Kursk a month or so to play out. See if Ukraine captures the nuclear power plant, etc. Then we will know if this is real, or just another propaganda offensive to take attention away from what is going on elsewhere, where the Russians seem to be advancing relentlessly.
Otherwise, it's just one more exercise in mind reading. It's like when Ukraine claimed to knock out that early warning radar system in Russia, and suddenly ATACMS started getting through, you knew that despite Russian denials, they had probably done it. Or when Russia claimed to have nearly wiped out the Ukrainian air force within the space of a month with a new long range air defense feature, and air launched missile attacks on Crimea seemed to stop, which indicated that despite Ukrainian denials, the Russians were almost certainly telling the truth.
"The truth is so precious in wartime, that it must be protected by a bodyguard of lies." - Winston Churchill
We are condemned, as onlookers without inside information, despite what podcasts tell us, to wait and see, and all we can really do is note claims and wait.
OK, I can check off one of my old man projects. A couple of decades ago, I traveled to France, and the French I learned at school was useless. Nobody could understand me, and I could only understand people who spoke very slowly and simply.
So as an old man, I listened to French music, to improve my listening and accent, listened to French language podcasts, studied vocabulary, but I still felt that it was all a waste, because if I turned on a French movie, I had to use the subtitles in French to understand what was going on. But when I got to France recently, I found myself quite able to converse in French with the people I encountered who spoke no English (you have to get off the beaten path to find such people) It was like I woke up one morning and could speak French.
So I think what happened is that like with any mature language, with a history, and a literature, speakers of French do "code switching," speaking to other native speakers they freely use idioms that are all but impenetrable to non-natives, for instance the phrase for "Do you want to get high" is exactly the same as "do you want to fuck?" and you are supposed to understand by context. You have to live there quite a while to be able to confidently sort through this stuff, and this idiomatic and informal French is what they speak in movies and TV shows. BUT! If they know they are talking to a non-native French speaker, they will switch to a standard French, the kind that we are taught in classes. My problem was that we didn't have the tools back in the day to hear French whenever we wanted to on YouTube or wherever, so my listening and accent sucked.
So my advice, if you are learning a language, is to set your goal, and if your goal is to speak with French people who speak no English to get around in France, order food, buy shoes, whatever, don't worry about whether you can easily understand French movies without titles, just learn standard words and work on pronunciation, and if you want to be able to understand media, and conversations between native speakers, understand that you have set for yourself a much higher bar, much more difficult to achieve.
I am sure it's the same with any language you want to learn. Anyway, it was fun speaking French with French people, and I will be going back for a friend's destination wedding in 18 months, so maybe I can raise the bar a bit myself.
The trip did accomplish one thing, before the trip, if I tried to read a novel in French, it was a chore, and was hard to follow the plot, but now, even as I have to look up many words, I read them without having to make a forced effort. Nobody is too old to learn a language.
It's often about the dog that didn't bark, because both sides try to divert attention from setbacks.
I just watches a 2-hour documentary on the War of 1812, and suddenly it was obvious when historians were hedging, misdirecting, leaving important stuff out, after two years of trying to sort through the lies from both sides in Ukraine, you begin to hear things differently.
What was also funny was a comment that the "Republicans" wanted this war. "Republicans" didn't exist at the time, Thomas Jefferson wanted the war, and said "Canada is ours for the marching" and while they included the quote, they did not attribute it to him. Popular history is just propaganda, and the war of 1812 primarily served to unleash the genocide of the Indians on the North American continent, which the British were trying to hold back. It's never been so clear that popular history is so plainly spun by people who *know* they are spinning it.
Anywhere but Paris. I drove between Switzerland and the Côte d'Azur and took 9 days. Côte d'Azur was way too English speaking for me, and I should have known that, but it was still something to see, and there were a couple of Uber drivers who preferred my bad French to their bad English. Hot as hell there too. I was in Aix en Provence, where it was around 100F, but humidity was only 40%, so it wasn't really that bad at all, but once I got to where the humidity was higher, it was hard to take.
Coming on the heels of the “No tax on tips” the Harris campaign has leaked another policy position. The complete details were not available but “Drill baby drill” was key phrase.
I had created a comment that I thought was published, only to find it nested as a reply to tim in vermont's comment on practical French language learning. My real comment will follow... Still not liking how Blogger works on mobile devices.
"The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that it will hold an emergency meeting on mpox and the decision whether to declare the virus “a public health emergency of international concern,” its director-general confirmed over the weekend. The emergency meeting will be held on Aug. 14 to assess whether the status of mpox—a virus previously referred to as monkeypox that has been spreading in about 10 African nations—should prompt the international emergency declaration, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on social media. “If so, it will advise me on the temporary recommendations on how to better prevent and reduce the spread of the disease and manage the global public health response,” he said.
A public health emergency of international concern is the WHO’s highest alarm and allows the U.N. agency to use emergency responses under its international health regulations. Since 2005, there have been seven such declarations, including for COVID-19 in 2020, the zika virus epidemic in 2015, and previous mpox outbreaks in 2022 and 2023.
Mpox is caused by a virus transmitted to people from infected animals, but it can be passed from person to person via close physical contact. Symptoms include boil-like skin lesions and rashes, a fever, and muscle aches.
Officials say that a strain of the virus known as Clade I, which is currently affecting several African countries, may cause illness that is more severe than that caused by the variant known as Clade II, which caused a worldwide outbreak in 2022."

Biden not only received deferments for his undergraduate days at the University of Delaware, but for three years of law school at Syracuse University. “When his education deferments expired in 1968, Biden requested a deferment based on the fact he had asthma as a teenager. He did this in spite of the fact that, according to his own book, he was a star athlete in high school and in college played intramural sports and was a lifeguard in the summer.”
I took only one year of High School French, but was pushed forward to second year by the teacher, who was also my Spanish teacher in freshman year. Didn't use it a lot, but tried to keep up what little I had.
We visited Montréal a few years ago, and while I couldn't grasp what the cashier said over the speaker at the gas pump, when I went inside I was able to understand that my card couldn't be read at the pump. I read the highway signs just fine, and had a bit more practice at a souvenir store before we crossed into Ontario.
My favorite French movie is Amélie, with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg a close second. Watching them without subtitles helpse keep up my comprehension, and once in a while I browse Le Monde.
The back button will get you there, at least on mobile devices. It doesn't take you back to edit a comment you just posted - a small improvement, but a good thing anyway.
"Brazil's Supreme Court judge who oversees its repressive censorship regime and other authoritarian acts is Alexandre de Moraes.
We obtained 6 gigabytes from his chambers among his top aides -- audios, messages, texts -- and began reporting today on the revelations in @folha. 🇧🇷"
I discovered that early on. Now I read the comments twice ☹️. First in the old mode, then I skim them with nested replies to see what might be a reply to what. That second read goes pretty quickly.
The problem with only reading the chronological mode is, people may abandon quoting what they're replying to, which is pretty much mandatory in the old format.

That bastard ! You've convinced me- i'm not going to vote for Biden.
Latest poll has Trump up by 1 (800 LVs), other Dem-oriented poll has Harris up by 4 (661 LVs, heavily oversampled Dems). On this date in 2020 Biden was up by 6.5, in 2016 Cankles was up by 9.4.
Please note that these two polls were taken after almost a month of tongue bath, fellatic coverage of Harris and Tyrant Tim by the Dem propaganda media - and our local paid shills.
So once again, the paid America-hating Dem shills here on Althouse lie.
I guess you still haven’t realized that there are millions of veterans and civilians who do not give a shit about these smears. You don’t speak for all veterans, stop pretending you do.
Neither do you. Well, unless you've personally talked to these so-called millions of veterans and civilians.
I was wondering if 'tim in vermont' would have anything to say about Ukraine now that can no longer pretend they're losing. (By the way, where did 'imTay' go?) The fact is that Ukraine has captured more square miles of Russia in 8 days than Russia has captured of Ukraine all year, and Russia's 'victory' cost them tens of thousands of corpses.
(A Ukrainian on Twitter calculated that a snail is nine times faster than the speed of the Russian advance at its fastest point. Of course, that was a bit unfair: no snail would go full speed 24 hours a day.)
Russians in Kursk are surrendering not just in ones and twos and fives and tens but in groups of 20, 30, 40, and 50, and these include paratroopers, Kadyrovites, and officers, not just untrained 18-year-old conscripts. And Ukrainian drones are hitting airfields near Murmansk, near Moscow, and several other far-off places every night. Meanwhile, Russian drones, bombs, and missiles slaughter Ukrainian civilians every night, and 'tim' doesn't care.
All this has been done with little or none of the promised support from Biden. The long-promised F-16s took two years to arrive, and so far there are only 10 of them, though we have hundreds lined up in the desert that we could easily provide. Jake Sullivan is desperate to prevent the Russian empire from collapsing, but Putin is doing everything he can to make that happen.
The president of the United States promised to guarantee Ukraine's 1991 borders in return for them giving up their nuclear bombs and large bombers - the same kind of bombers Russia is using to bomb them now. That means we do in fact have a dog in this fight. We are obligated to arm them, and not doing so, or doing so half- or quarter-heartedly, as Biden is doing, is shameful, contemptible, and damaging to the interests of the U.S.

The last Wisconsin poll was the Times Sienna poll =last Saturday and it shows Harris up by 4 points.

I finally finished Kelly’s interview of Nate Silver. I had found him to be an impressive fellow, and then he let it slip that he was casting a vote for Harris-Walz and complete economic and societal collapse.
Thankfully the WI ballot amendments failed.
Deliberately obtuse language is bullshit.

"Kamala Harris leads by 9 points in new Wisconsin poll."
Woops- Inga was right and I was wrong. 9 points it is!

Yeah, reads as an outlier .... but makes the Times/Siena poll look more accurate

That would be hilarious if it weren't what she is really like....THAT is what is really scary.

Dalia Al-Aqidi is female. My mistake.
I was hoping that but also recognized she's from Tim Walz's Minnesota. I have family up there. They're all Democrat Kool-Aid guzzlers like Inga now.

Nice post, Tim. Were you in greater Paris, or other locations?
Have you seen the video of police walking down streets and shooting residents standing on their doorsteps? Tim Walz lets riotous mobs burn his cities, but if you stand outside in the evening on your front porch, Tim Walz allows use of force for compliance.
WHO Schedules Emergency Meeting Over Mpox Outbreak
Here we go again....

The weather has been so great of late. What a time to be alive!

Click on the (e.g.) “6:20 PM” and read the comments from there.
It works. Thanks for the tip Michael McNeil; it never occurred to me that the time stamp was also a link.
When I hit 'add a comment' though, it brings me back to this.

This one made me laugh. I was certain they were going to endorse Trump!
I am willing to wait a few weeks to see how this shakes out. America has no dog in this fight. Joe Biden does, but not most Americans.
