At the Harris/Walz rally yesterday in Eau Claire, Bon Iver played "Battle Cry of Freedom."

Bon Iver — "bon hiver"/"good winter" — is native to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and who knows what portion of the rally crowd was rallying 'round Kamala Harris and Tim Walz and what portion was rallying for Bon Iver, but you can hear the performance in a TikTok video after the jump below.

Meanwhile, Wikipedia says...
The "Battle Cry of Freedom," also known as "Rally 'Round the Flag," is a song written in 1862 by American composer George Frederick Root (1820–1895) during the American Civil War. A patriotic song advocating the causes of Unionism and abolitionism, it became so popular that composer H. L. Schreiner and lyricist W. H. Barnes adapted it for the Confederacy. A modified Union version was used as the campaign song for the Lincoln-Johnson ticket in the 1864 presidential election, as well as in elections after the war, such as for Garfield in the 1880 U.S. presidential election....
And here's a particularly evocative sample lyric:
Oh we're springing to the call for three hundred thousand more,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
And we'll fill the vacant ranks with a million freemen more,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom.
@consequence Bon Iver performed "The Battle Cry of Freedom" at a rally for Kamala Harris in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on Wednesday, August 7th. #boniver #eauclaire #eauclairewi #kamalaharris ♬ original sound - consequence

Things are going well.

Either Trump wins and we return to the United States as founded.

Or they steal the election with mail in ballots and they have to do what they are doing in Britain.

Walz has already made it clear that he will allow barbarians burn loot and murder while censoring the victims.

But it will end badly for the violent and repressive regimes in both countries.

The Civil War enthusiasts among the Rats are forgetting two critical facts:

1) With officers/NCOs like John Kerry and Tim Walz, it's pretty easy to predict that their "control" over the military is paper thin.

2) Most of the people who do the actual trigger pulling are white men who increasingly disbelieve that their interests are taken care of.

Admittedly conservatives have different delusions, but those aren't quite as lethal.

Yet Harris-Walz ticket presents no platform to-date that meaningfully addresses most pressing issues: affect of high inflation upon most households, federal deficit and substantial expansion of federal spending programs, low-performing public educational systems, and threat of world-wide war. Nope, let's take empty slogans: "freedom!" and "democracy!", neither demonstrated by annointment of Harris-Walz ticket, "abortion!!" which is a state legislative issue, and "gender-affirming care for children!" which is amoral and evil. Yet cheering crowds, concert venues, happy warrior Kamala and numb-nuts Walz.

Free men are the last thing Kamala wants. She wants us to apologize, grovel, and do as we are told.

It's good they're getting them used to war songs. One's a comin'.

The women and girls that are inspired by these hollywood designed glow-ups have absolutely no idea what their fickle focus on entertainment value over substance is going to make their lives look like in 20 years.

But by then it will be too late.

Days of Rome; beer and circus for the masses. Placate the peasants with pop stars and cheap beer; they're too lazy to educate themselves on the issues and vote per their Instagram feeds.

I wonder how many of them have ever used a "weapon of war". They'd better start practicing...

That brought tears to my eyes. I loved his being there to perform, he said “we all know why we’re here”. Indeed, freedom is on the line and non Trumpists know it.

Allow me to translate in a language familiar to you: "Mooo. Moo Moo Moooo. Moo!"

Freedom. Right. It was a nice thought. As Walz demonstrated with his Covid oppression. Now get ready for higher taxes, Kahn regulation, gun control, X censorship, and green mandates. The only freedom progs still like is the freedom to end pregnancy at any time. Other than that?

What a joke. Looks like another era of musicians has sold out to the totalitarians just like the hippies (Neil Young), Bruce Springsteen, and John Mellencamp.

Most of America isn't paying attention to this stuff like we do at the Althouse blog. There are also a lot of Ingas out there rooting for the totalitarian outcome. Irony is, like Inga, a lot of these totalitarian white women life in safe, free, affluent, red communities.

Grab a beer, or cocktail. Cigarette or cigar. Get ready to enjoy the violins playing on the deck. There's and iceberg ahead, and there's a good chance we hit it.

This was Bon Iver, not Bon Jovi.

But if you wanted to start a Wisconsin-based Bon Jovi tribute band, you would have to name it Mon Dovi.

A number of years ago a friend of mine sent me, unrequested, a couple of cds by Bon Iver. He said he and his wife could not stop listening to him, and had seen him live, and that he was great.
I tried to listen. Tried to like it. But even if I liked one song, I found that every song in the rest of his albums had the same sound. That whiney high noted crying like call to the...whatever. I could not make it through an album.

Good to see he's unsurprisingly out there with Kamala. He should be.

A Trump supporter on Twitter named Josiah Lippincott attended the rally, and he's been posting pictures showing that it was complete chaos when people went to leave.

As an aside to my own comment, I'm guessing that most men named Josiah are Trump supporters. ;-)

I like Bon Iver. For Emma is a great album. But I still am not voting for Harris. And I wouldn’t go to or watch or listen to a Harris event. I have more important things to do, like watching my toenails grow.

Nice song. But my generation goes with Judy Garland belting out Battle Hymn of the Republic 3 weeks after the CIA sniper team blew out their target’s brains in Dallas. It’s on you tube. And it’s done right.

If you want a song for today, I'd go with Stephen Foster's
'Hard Times Come Again No More". Yup--if the Kackler is elected, Hard Times will continue. But the affluent "elites" --or the affluent "deplorables" aren't hurt as much by inflation as say the the paycheck to paycheck middle class. I suspect that most of the people who comment on this blog are, if not affluent, at least "comfortable" and not likely to be hit very hard by a Harris Walz victory. It'll make Inga happy at least.

"Freedom." You keep using that word...

As regards reproductive freedom, here's what Tim Walz signed into law, and I'm sure you're fine with it:

"Minnesota Abortion Regulation After the 2023 Legislative Session
This FAQ is intended to give a high-level summary of key abortion legislation passed in 2023 in Minnesota, as well as current guidance for patients and providers.

In the 2023 legislative session, many of Minnesota’s abortion statutes and regulations changed. Most of these changes were included in three significant reproductive health care-related bills. All changes are in effect as of April 28, 2023:

Section 145.409 of the Minnesota Statutes, also known as the “Protect Reproductive Options Act” or PRO Act, codifies an individual’s right to control their own reproductive health. It also plainly states that the Minnesota Constitution protects the “fundamental right to reproductive freedom.” Finally, the statute prohibits local units of government from imposing any additional restrictions on access to reproductive health services.
The Health and Human Services Omnibus Bill repeals Minnesota laws that: required patients seeking abortions to wait 24-hours after receiving a statutory informed-consent process; required extensive reporting of abortions by providers; and criminalized abortions under specific circumstances.
While the PRO Act and Health and Human Services Omnibus Bill codify patients’ rights to reproductive health within Minnesota, the Reproductive Freedom Defense Act protects providers and patients alike from civil and criminal penalties imposed by states other than Minnesota.
Each of these bills and their most important practical effects on both patients and providers are discussed below.
"

Kind of a mixed bag, but doing away with informed consent for an invasive medical procedure isn't freedom, and is a step away from forced abortion. But to the political left, which is solidly where Tim Walz falls on the spectrum, abortion is a sacrament and a holy obligation.

Their theme song should be "Do the Evolution" by Pearl Jam.

Woo
I'm ahead, I'm a man
I'm the first mammal to wear pants, yeah
I'm at peace with my lust
I can kill 'cause in god I trust, yeah
It's evolution, baby, yeah
I'm at peace, I'm the man
Buying stocks on the day of the crash, yeah
On the loose, I'm a truck
All the rolling hills, I'll flatten 'em out, yeah
It's herd behavior, uh huh
It's evolution, baby, good
Admire me, admire my home
Admire my son, he's my clone
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
This land is mine, this land is free
I'll do what I want but irresponsibly
It's evolution, baby, uh
I'm a thief, I'm a liar
There's my church, I sing in the choir
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Admire me, admire my home
Admire my son, admire my clones
'Cause we know, appetite for a nightly feast
Those ignorant Indians got nothin' on me
Nothin', why?
Because it's evolution, baby
I am ahead, I am advanced
I am the first mammal to make plans, yeah
I crawled the earth, but now I'm higher
2010, watch it go to fire
It's evolution, baby, ugh
It's evolution, baby
Ah, do the evolution
Come on, come on, come on

What's happening in Canada is likely to happen here under Harris/Walz:

Canadian health care providers repeatedly pressured woman with cerebral palsy to choose death

"In an op-ed for the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, Heather Hancock said she was born in Alberta at 25 weeks gestation, weighing just one pound, six ounces. At two years old, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and doctors said she should be institutionalized because she “would never amount to anything.” Hancock, however, has no intellectual disabilities; her disability is purely physical.

“I was the first disabled child mainstreamed into the Calgary public school system,” she said. “It was great for my education, but not for my social life. Fear and ignorance resulted in years of bullying and being ostracized by my peers and a few teachers. I graduated with Honours in 1986. Intermixed with all of this were multiple surgeries and regular physiotherapy appointments.

Because, at some point, the State has decided you've lived too long.

Cuts by Bon Iver and The Decembrists were "giveaways" from Starbucks some years ago - little cards at the cashier station that could be redeemed on iTunes for free.

I liked some of the other artists - Bhi Bhiman was an interesting surprise - but I was unimpressed by Bon Iver and The Decembrists.

Although I am impressed by the number of you whose great, great grand pappy volunteered to help Mr Lincoln free the slaves and went on to serve bravely as a Colonel in his army.

Must have been a lot of Colonels.

FYI. My great, great grand pappy ( from Salem, MA) was an acting Ensign in the US Navy who was at Galveston aboard the ship USS Cornubia which transported Generals Kirby Smith and John B. Magruder into Galveston after they surrendered the Trans Mississippi West to the US - the final confederate surrender of the war. He was not a Colonel, yet I am proud of his service. Unlike some he went when called. There were a lot of Colonels in the Civil War. A lot got killed or wounded because they were much more involved in direct contact at the front than is the case now.
