Here's the image:
Tashjian proclaims that "a striking, fascinatingly out-of-character image in its storytelling." What's the usual "character"? More smiley? More of a sidekick? I really don't know. Do you? We're told "the religious undertones are startling": "Her pose and visage, not to mention the color of her dress, recall religious paintings of saints communing with their higher power."
IN THE COMMENTS: Rafe — short for Raphael? — says "Which paintings? What a lazy comparison, to paintings which only exist, apparently, in her mind."
I went looking for paintings of saints gazing upward. There's this, by Raphael:
Notice that Catherine's hands do not hang limply at her sides. They are expressive of ecstasy and placed in locations that would seem truly odd on a modern-day politico. Unlike Jill, she's got her weight shifted to one side, and also unlike Jill, she's leaning on what we know to be the device used to torture-murder-martyr her. Jill exists in an empty brown-gray void.
But it's the difference in the eyes that is most striking. Jill's eyes are rotated sideways, and only slightly upward, as if she is gazing fondly at her somewhat tall husband. They're not fixed on Heaven.
Can we find paintings of saints with eyes rotated sideways, which seems mildly coy? Consider the entirely un-Jill-like Saint Lucy:

Exactly. Nurses uniform. Very fitting.
Why does the left have to worship its leaders? if you worship flesh and blood, you're in a cult.
It's reported that dress retails for $4,990. Seems pretty tone deaf to me.
But the stars have been in Doctor Jill's eyes since she married him. Multiple Vogue covers exemplify the unstated reasons she's not gonna let Joe drop out.
But she succeeded in this Vogue profile: she answered all the questions and knew all the facts.
Royal "We"
Which paintings? What a lazy comparison, to paintings which only exist, apparently, in her mind.

Is she running for something?
That’s a coat dress from 1992. Come back around has it?
It's homage to pussy. A cliche.
A rational person would read that as a deliberation on the choices of the artist. Why do I get the sense that it is being peddled as a reflection on the attributes of the subject (who is really quite irrelevant)?
I guess this could be the angle that works to keep the women in line to vote for the cadaver…
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-ha
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see that nice First Lady in her clean white coat
And they're coming to take me away, ha-ha
To the happy home
With trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to take me away, ha-ha
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those nice First Lady in her clean white coat
And they’re coming to take me away!
That Vogue article was horrible.
But I did find out that Dr. Biden is a teacher at a community college.
That makes me want to watch Community again. Season 1 is awesome.
Soviet level lying.
What is this “we”? No one elected her. Talk about threat to democracy, jeez. She needs to be put in her place.
first paragraph from that Vogue article...
If you want to know what power feels like, try to get yourself driven around in a motorcade. Flashing police chaperone lights form a perimeter as you blaze down an empty highway, waiting cars backed up on entry ramps as you pass. It’s as if the world is holding its breath. For you. Also, rules don’t apply...
By all comparisons Melania is serene beauty.
Jill Biden is Vogue’s cover star. What timing. The first lady covers Vogue for the third time, positioned by the magazine as a savior of the country’s fate.
Wow.
The implication from that is that Joe Biden is incompetent and dangerous. But relax because Jill will save us.
Covered in a stylish shroud..very fitting
I want DJT to win so Melania can get a Vogue cover.
I wonder if the Annie Leibovitz photos they took at Camp David also featured Dr. Jill.
"Hunter, you stay out of this one. And the next one. This is just Mom and Dad, okay?"
"Joe, your mouth is open again. Breathe through your nose when you're in front of a camera. We worked on this."
"Annie, I think we need some photos of just me. Can you make me look like Joan of Arc?"
If Jill is referring to her and Joe’s future only in that cover quote, then I rescind my earlier comment. I haven’t read the article.
However, Joe may choose to keep running, the country be damned, but their party will have a say, and of course the voters will be the ultimate determinants of their future.
She is "communing with a higher power" .... Satan!
My immediate thought: Camilla Parker Bowles recorded phone call with then Prince Charles...tampongate of 1993! But this time Jill is the tampon.
The conversation was notable for a number of reasons, not least of which because it involved the heir to the throne saying that he would like to “live inside [her] trousers” and joking that he would be reincarnated as a tampon, hence the name of the scandal.

Somebody has to be in charge. Someone has to show what educators can do when they are given the reins of command. She is leading us away from the Trump iniquity like a contemporary St. Joan.
Don't let that evil man burn her (and you, ladies) on his mushroom shaped stake of hate. We are your only hope, now.
There is no alternative but the death of Our Democracy.
“Why does the left have to worship its leaders? if you worship flesh and blood, you're in a cult.”
Trump.
Hopefully November 5th is the new July 4th.
St. Doctor Jill. The patron saint of social climbing babysitters.
My first thought upon viewing this cover was "Oh, gag me with a spoon." Then I got curious about that expression. Is it from my adolescence during the mid 1960's? Google failed to give me any info. Maybe someone in the comments or our hostess can tell me its history.
“I want DJT to win so Melania can get a Vogue cover.”
Why wasn’t she on the cover of Vogue when Trump was president?
Melania Trump has more grace than Jackie O, and she means considerably more to her husband than Jackie ever did. Jill Biden isn't even in the same sport, never mind the same league.
They work on these magazine spreads for weeks. The Democrats must be absolutely cursing their luck: the New York publishers would have been better off pulping the whole run.
Projection is all your side seems to have anymore, Inga. Here we have an influential magazine comparing the woman fighting to keep a senile man in the White House to a saint, that’s our evidence, now you provide evidence to prove your point. Oh wait, you can’t.
Inga in the projection room early.
The Soviet Union had its Ingas, too.
Vogue can put an elder abuser on the cover, but they refused to put the most beautiful first lady ever on the cover because they are full of the shit they post. They deserve the Bidens.
@michaele: My first thought upon viewing this cover was "Oh, gag me with a spoon." Then I got curious about that expression. Is it from my adolescence during the mid 1960's?
As I recall, Frank Zappa's song "Valley Girl" (1982):
I am so sure
He's, like, so gross
Like, he sits there and
Like, plays with all his rings
And he, like
Flirts with all the guys in the class
It's, like, totally disgusting
I'm like so sure
It's like
Barf me out
Gag me with a spoon!
...
Valley girl
She's a valley girl
Valley girl
She's a valley girl
Okay, fine
Fer sure, fer sure
She's a valley girl
And there is no cure
Okay, fine
Fer sure, fer sure
She's a valley girl

The photo would work better if Dr. Jill had a stethoscope around her neck.
I was trying to figure out why I dislike that dress.
Nurse Ratched!
Who used to do Sister Wendy commenting on great works of art? Riffing a bit: her barely covered curves are not only striking, they are voluptuous. Her entire body glistens and throbs with excitement. We are invited to join in her animal anticipation of ecstasy and we instinctively want to. She longs for the passionate, slightly rough embrace of a lover, calloused hands, bad breath and all.
Inga, like all of the Left, pretends that support for Trump is cult-like, not understanding (or being willing to understand), that Trump is an effect, not a cause. Trump's existence as a politician is almost entirely based on him saying what much of the country already believed, both back in 2016 and still today. The attitudes and policies of Trump are really those of middle America, truly centrist in nature, and it is necessary to lie and engage in fantasy in order to discredit those policies and ideas.
Althouse writes, "Unlike Jill, [St. Catherine has] got her weight shifted to one side, and also unlike Jill, she's leaning on what we know to be the device used to torture-murder-martyr her."
Come November St. Jill will have the instrument of her martyrdom to lean on, a genuine, not-fraudulent ballot.
Jill exists in an empty brown-gray void.
truer words, never spoken. Dr Jill doesn't live in our world, she just watches it on TV
I didn't think religious art, I immediately did think classical imagery though.
A remaining pillar of a long ago temple that once held influence but is now crumbled. The surviving pieces are now only prizes in foreign museums and for wistful magazine articles
Put a gilt halo on her and she could be a Russian Orthodox saint, except for the white, which would seem kind of blasphemous.
Yes, shortened, but from Rafael.
I do not see religion in this cover photo at all. I see class. It is much more evocative of late-Victorian upper-class portraiture:
Portrait of Madeleine Mabille
She is above us mere bourgeois. This is Vogue, not Better Homes & Gardens, much less U.S. Catholic Magazine.

Nothing illustrates the petty political tendencies of the Left as well as this cover, her third in three and a half years. We had a highly admired supermodel who actually looks stunning in fashionable clothes as First Lady yet no magazine put her on their cover. If they weren't making fun of her Christmas decorations or her "message" coat the bitchy Leftist media didn't show her at all in news reports either.
So much for appreciating the extraordinary success of minority immigrants, right?
Paddy O nails it. She’s the pillar holding up the whole rotting edifice.
BTW, where is Melania?
to be fair to Dr Jill..
she IS the most famous cocktail waitress/baby sitter Ever to be official White House Courtesan
Seriously
for a teenaged cocktail waitress who slept her way into a nightclub owners marriage..
for a 20 something baby sitter who slept her way into a two bit politician's second marriage..
for a 40something community college instructor..
She's come quite a ways.. For a whore
The previous first lady is a very beautiful woman, elegant, and a former fashion model. How many covers did Vogue dedicate to her? How about other mags, Vanity Fair, Women's Day, Elle, etc...?
Could it be coincidental that every woman's magazine in America declined to feature any articles or photo shoots of a First Lady who is objectively gorgeous and a professional model?
No, the failure of any magazine to feature Melania Trump was a conspiracy enacted before Trump's election to president and enforced throughout his presidency, and still in effect today. A conspiracy of AWFL's to deny a fashion model the satisfaction of even one magazine photo spread. Party members are vicious, vindictive, despicable chickens.
lane ranger
Very well put.
BTW, where is Melania?
The sheer jealous evil and hatred of Inga is astonishing, isn’t it?
She’s proud of it, too. She wants you to know it.
“ BTW, where is Melania”
BTW, why is that any of your business?
Inga. Don't be obtuse.
Pagan idolatry
The First Lady
Jill Biden
"We will decide your future"
It says "our", but you know what she meant.
Lady. You and the Democrat party aren't competent enough to decide anything.
Can't wait for this twisted crew to fuck off down the road.
I just checked, and the Catholics don’t recognize a Saint Jill. The closest I got (according to Google) was Jill St. John.
The Biden presidency? End it, don’t mend it.
“The closest I got (according to Google) was Jill St. John.“
LOL (x2)
The parody Vogue cover with Vincent Furnier - aka Alice Cooper - was the best cover.
A quote from Groucho comes to mind:
"That's the most ridiculous thing I ever hoid."
BTW, why is that any of your business?
Yes Meade it IS all of our business.
Catherine Wheel is a great band.
Your business is in the street, Igna.
Standards. When a mediocrity like a Jill Biden is hoisted up and made to look like saintly, we have no standards any longer.
She's evil. She put Joe up to this. She covered for him. She- more than anyone in the world knew in 2019, and knows today, that he is incapable. She insists on being called 'Doctor' because she went to school to get a degree in education, and the media portrays her as something other than what she obviously is- a rather empty actress portraying someone of substance. But when there is none, there is nothing you can do to hide that fact. Still, they play at this game.
The state of our country and the state of the world, the chaos that we see as we look around it, can all be laid at the feet of the self-absorbed, narcissistic ego of one Jill Biden. She knew where Joe was and she pushed for it anyway, and continues to do so even as the Presidency itself has become a public clown show.
I give the writer of the WaPo article credit for a couple of things. We are told:
Anna Wintour, Vogue’s longtime chieftain, has held multiple fundraisers for the president. The story is dutifully glowing:
So, that explains why Republican first ladies don't get the cover treatment from Vogue.
And it doesn't gush about Dr. Jill being gorgeous.
The article could have mentioned that Melania Trump was on the cover of Vogue in 2005, when she married Trump.
In 2021, this Newsweek: Melania Trump Jill Biden Vogue comparison article includes this fun secretly recorded quote from Melania about a first lady Vogue photo shoot.
"Vogue said like, oh, we want to do a profile. Profile? Fuck you, profile. I don't need no profile. Yeah, what I need another profile?" It might be a cover. I'm like, might be a cover? I don't give a fuck about Vogue and any magazine."

Doing fine, sweetie. The entire planet would know if she stopped liking her husband. It's odd, I just assume people are aware of what happy marriages look like, especially at the elite level where merely taking care of an estate is running a medium-sized business. But no, the drones remain blissfully unaware. Fascinating.
As for "why doesn't Melania Trump have a Vogue cover?" it's because New York publishing houses are hyper liberals enslaved to the dogma. Did you know Anna Wintour's father once ran a newspaper for Robert Maxwell? Funny how the same insular tribe is so close to all major legacy media outlets.
They were practically throwing away money by not featuring Melania Trump, but that's fine. At the top level, there are more important things than money.
To me, the gaze and the hand position suggest superhero about to take off. She's channeling Captain Marvel.
"We Will Decide Our Future..."
What's this 'We' sh*t?
At least no sofas or drapes were harmed in the making of this picture.
I’m transfixed.
How deeply will Inga sink into evil, jealousy and hatred? Is there any limit?
Stay tuned. I don’t think she’s through disgracing herself yet.

It's amazing that these people have time to feed themselves in between jerking themselves and each other off all the time.
Rather than images of Saints, I would say the picture is inspired by mid century Soviet realism. Dr. Jill, as a new Soviet woman, gazing into the promised future.
A smidge heavy on the facial airbrushing, doncha think, Vogue?
What Ambrose said.
Poor timing too. I wonder if anyone thought "When Joe stinks up the 1st debate, will this cover help?" The sycophants around the Oval Office probably kept that thought to themselves.
The deification of a manipulative monster.
Soviet Wintour to the rescue.
Poor Inga - trapped inside the loyalist leftist cult. She cannot get out!
Strike a pose Dr. Jill!
That's GREAT!!!!
Wasn't Jill the family baby-sitter? Still is.
Wintour is leftist glossy.
It looks more like a stagehand is telling her that her time is up and she's reluctant to get off the stage..
Melania is NOT on the cover of any American leftist Glossy Magazine. Thanks.

Pure projection. Those of us who have seen that he was promoted by the DNC as a straw candidate do not worship him, but we'll hold our noses and vote for him anyway because the alternative, now as in 2016, is dreadful.
Superhero? Joan of Arc? Botticelli subject? I'm thinking more like that bald Italian fellow, used to pose looking out from balconies with his hands on his hips. Ended up hanging around the corner streetlight.

The posing isn't reminiscent of religious iconography at all. It's the gazing-at-the-future pose familiar from Nazi and Communist propaganda in the 1930s. If you look for a poster titled Jugend dient den Führer, or posters for the movie SA Mann Brand, or various adverts for the Waffen-SS, you see the same pose with body facing viewer's left with head upturned facing right.
Obviously *not* saying *Vogue* is a crypto-Nazi publication -- it's a perfectly normal pose these days, conveying a spirit of bold curiosity for the adventure ahead. That's just what the pose *actually* echoes.
At least she is not wearing draperies for this photo shoot.
Dr. Jill’s first husband claimed the Joe and Jill had an affair while Jill, the babysitter for Joes kids, was still married.

Am I the only one this grated on? Ann covers Vogue, or at least a story about it. Biden is on the cover of Vogue, she is not "covering" it.
Is this a common use of cover? I don't think I've ever seen it before. I think if I had I would have noticed.

Jill didn’t write a PhD dissertation, she wrote an EdD dissertation… that, reportedly, is poorly written.

That's akin to asking if the car ran over the pedestrian or the driver did.
I still support the Biden Presidency, nor do I regret my vote in Nov 2020 for Jill Biden.
Edith Wilson reborn as Saint Dr. Jill. Conceived by the Holy Leftmedia.
I agree with Althouse that it's not "saintly". It's too rigid, unlike paintings of female saints which project their femininity. On first glance the eyes are drawn to the upper torso, not the face. Jill is way too pole-like (an unmeant reference to where poles go) even down to her fingers flattened against her legs. There is no softness in that face and that dress is stupidly reminiscent of a straight jacket. The lighting gives everything a rather flat look in the middle, bouncing the eyes between the bottom and top instead or providing a distinct focal point. Sitting would have provided folds and contrast and a darker background would have helped if applied to the bottom of her outfit as well.
Whoever shot that was enrapt instead of thoughtful. Even corporate portraits are better done.
She may not be tired, chuck, but certainly worn.
The Mikes (MJWolf, Fitzgerald and Mikeski) are right on. These people are nuts.

The NY Times write-up on this is highly negative and closes with this quote from the very important person, Tina Brown, formerly of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker -

EdD dissertations are apparently most unrepeatable, often involving interviewing single digits number of people, often other Ed school grad students.

re: Article about Jill Biden cover: I think you actually need a college education to come up with that level of BS. Wow! (as voiced by Owen Wilson)
When you're using images of saints for anything other than symbolism regarding saints, you're able to conclude anything you want about the image, the symbolism thereof, and the meaning of that symbolism. Just make stuff up, it will work. One can do the same thing with comic book characters or celebrity photos at galas. It is simply the projection of one's own opinion onto a canvas conveniently showing something, anything.
Here, I'll give it a go: Jill on Vogue is posed as a marble statue, a bad Soviet memorial to The Power Of Older Women, probably placed outside a government pension office in Irkukst, Siberia in 1973.
Dr. Jill is dressed in an outfit that suggests the white jackets of actual physicians. What a self-aggrandizing buffoon this EdU PhD is.
@Rabel 11:52: I see what you mean: 14x 'Dr. Biden' and only 7x 'first lady'. Hmmmm.
Dr. Jill hitched her RadioFlyer to Dementia Joe’s Corvette and never looked back
Sorry, my bad! The EdD dissertation is findable, I believe on Tucker Carlson website. He had put the whole thing onscreen during the 2020 campaign. It was so bad my wife was embarrassed to ever admit to having attended the University of Delaware (Nursing) again.
Rabel mentioned the NYT write up of the cover.
A couple of more quotes:
1. The cover line — “We decide our future” — did not seem to help . . . “No!” a commenter wrote. “We decide your future! Done with your entitlement.”
2. . . . during an election where voters are saying over and over again it is all about the economy,” Ms. Min said. “Is the Vogue audience really the path to victory in Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada?”
Of course throughout the article Jill is only referred to as Dr. Jill Biden. I think that works against the Bidens - we keep being reminded that Joe Biden needs constant medical supervision.
Shouting Thomas said...
“The Soviet Union had its Ingas, too.”
True, but no Vogue-esque magazines.
I imagine Jill saying to herself "boy do I look good" as she stands downstage of her clumsy Joey as he commits murder on his teleprompter readout. Her second thought could be "I'm holding this whole shit-show together so I deserve all this and more!" If Jill ever feels like she's not getting what she deserves she could follow the path of Martha Mitchell. That would be.....very interesting.
(The link to some description of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr, goes to the Vogue article itself.)
And those are her eyes which her head is turned toward in the painting: her martyrdom was preceded by her eyes being gouged out so she is most commonly depicted along with her eyes.
(I deleted the original of this comment since, once I enlarged the image, it's obvious that it has its eyes.)
Seeing Jill on the cover of Vogue makes me understand how a French peasant must have felt on seeing Marie Antoinette.
BTW, where is Melania?
Why do you care? She's a private citizen.
" Jill's eyes are rotated sideways, and only slightly upward..." because that's the direction of that burning sulphur smell.
She looks like she wakes up every morning in the White House and tells herself, "I deserve this."

It's the August issue. Jill and her sugar daddy might be gone by then.
Also how has Jill been on the Vogue cover 3 times and Melania was NEVER on it despite being objectively SOOO much better looking (and to be quite honest, with all the languages she speaks, much smarter too)?
I think it's perfectly appropriate for Vogue to have America's second woman president on its cover every once in a while.
Nice shot but in reality she's Edith Bunker spending all day chasing ding-dong Archie.
Balfegor: I agree. Though the fitst thing I thought of was DEVO and Duty Now For the Future.

The torture of bad timing — a week is a long time in politics. In the world of monthly publications, it can be an eternity.
What is also interesting is that anyone takes Vogue seriously in a non-fashion sense. They kiss up to their First Ladies, promise them cover-photo and text control, and, in the resultant article, publish unadulterated drivel. Hardly journalism.
