"Influencers have been given exclusive tours of the White House.... They’ve been wined and dined at lavish parties in New York and at State of the Union watch parties..."

"... in the White House. And they’ve been promised extraordinary access to party officials at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August, where for the first time ever they’ll be given a special room of their own, outfitted with quiet spaces for making videos. At least one has been offered an interview with the president at the convention, but said he was asked not to bring up Gaza. Priorities USA, a super PAC supporting Mr. Biden’s campaign, has pledged to spend at least $1 million on influencers, some of whom will be paid to share talking points online...."

From "Don’t Forget to Like, Subscribe and Vote: Biden’s Rocky Influencer Courtship/The Biden campaign is trying to work its way into social media feeds. But the young, left-leaning voices that control the conversation aren’t making it easy" (NYT).

That's written by Ken Bensinger, who, we're told, "covers right wing media and national political campaigns for The Times." This article really is part of keeping track of "right wing media." It reveals that the Biden campaign is far behind Trump, caught flat-footed as "Mr. Trump’s supporters produce an endless stream of memes, videos and adoring posts — all essentially free advertising — that reach an increasingly crucial slice of voters." That internal link goes to a piece Bensinger wrote last December: "Inside the Troll Army Waging Trump’s Online Campaign/A team of meme-makers has been flooding social media with pro-Trump posts riddled with sexist and racist tropes. Donald Trump is cheering them on." Notice, it's nefarious and wrong when Trump supporters do whatever it is people do on line, but it seems that Biden supporters desperately wish they had that sort of thing going for them too.

Back to today's article:
One event took place last month at the Eaton, a four-star hotel in the heart of Washington. Way to Win, Future Forward, Mr. Biden's primary super PAC, and the Hub Project, another progressive group, hosted about 140 influencers to Washington for a three-day event called Trending Up. Attendees were feted with a rooftop sushi spread, an open bar and a tour of the Capitol.

Can you co-opt influencers so easily?

But the mood, at least for some, soured after about a dozen attendees received surprise emails inviting them to the White House, setting off weeks of contentious accusations online that they and other pro-Biden creators were “feds” paid to shill for Mr. Biden.

"Feds" — that's hilarious.

“The inherent mistrust of authority was present at the whole conference,” said Sean Szolek-VanValkenburgh, who has 1.6 million followers on TikTok.... Mx. Szolek-VanValkenburgh did not receive an invitation but said they would not have accepted if they had....

Ha ha. This takes me back to September 13, 2006:

Bill Clinton, lunching with the bloggers.

Come on, you'd fly to New York City, to eat "southern chicken" with Bill Clinton and pose for a group photo, wouldn't you? And then you'd go home and blog about how he's good on your issues and how you're totally impressed, right? And, omigosh, "He's got beautiful blue eyes."

Hey, this blogger wrangling... it's easy when you've got blue eyes and chicken....

Well, it didn't work out for Hillary back then, but at least it was new. It's 2 decades later now, and you'd think these well-paid politicos, who con donors out of millions, would know how to wrangle social-media content providers by now. But, in fact, the social-media folk are ahead of them, and even rooftop sushi won't buy them. Back in 2006, you could get some top-notch bloggers to array themselves appreciatively for mere "southern chicken."

Well, we made all the hot spots, my money flowed like wine
Then that low down southern whiskey began to fog my mind
And I don't remember church bells or the money I put down
On the white picket fence and boardwalk of the house at the edge of town
Oh, but boy, do I remember the strain of her refrain
The nights we spent together, and the way she called my name

If you'll be my Dixie chicken, I'll be your Tennessee lamb
And we can walk together down in Dixieland
Down in Dixieland

The real wranglers of social media are the shell orgs like "The Other 98%," "Really American," "Science Moms," etc. They've been doing it all along, and I suspect they're connected to Biden's handlers. Also:

"Notice, it's nefarious and wrong when Trump supporters do whatever it is people do on line, but it seems that Biden supporters desperately wish they had that sort of thing going for them too."

I think the real influencers already do, but what they're up against is the pure incompetence of their guy.

That strategy isn’t working out for Disney.

That's because this social media type content in favor of Trump is organic, and the Left/MSM doesn't like anything they can't control from the top down. You can't manufacturer this type of stuff, so I doubt they'll have much success.

That said, while this may seem important, it's really the ground operation that matters and Democrats are lightyears ahead in their ability to produce ballots.

X is useless and unreadable because it’s flooded with Intel bots. Musk hasn’t been able to change that.

The CIA/FBI Intel axis, which runs the Fed (not Biden) already has saturated social media with DNC propaganda.

Misdirection. The Dem strategy is actually ballot harvesting.

Biden's just continuing on with LBJ's plan to get those ni***rs (including anyone else who believes government is the savior) to vote D for 200 years.

"President Obama [Biden's puppet master] owes a debt of gratitude to former President Lyndon Johnson for the “War on Poverty” programs he proposed in his 1964 Great Society speech. Johnson was well aware that, by federalizing his proposals, he was cementing black allegiance to the Democratic Party for years to come. In fact, it is reported that Johnson, in an attempt to assuage the fears of Southern governors, said that his plan was “to have them n*****s voting Democratic for the next 200 years.” Johnson’s plan worked masterfully."

Ignore them (the "influencers") for years believing that they can be bought with some fancy raw fish and a view from the roof? What if it rained? Victory hinges on a weather forecast?

"X is useless and unreadable because it’s flooded with Intel bots. Musk hasn’t been able to change that."

I searched the page of the NYT article for "X" — annoying, because "x" is a letter, but it was the most efficient idea I had. "X" — even just the letter — appears nowhere on the page. The social media in question is not X.

"Half of American adults say they get some or all of their news from platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok, according to the Pew Research Center. Among young people, the stats are even more striking: Nearly one-third of people between 18 and 29 get their news on TikTok."

So YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat are mentioned. X and Facebook are not even mentioned. Nor is blogging. Basically, what we are talking here is TikTok... the platform both Trump and Biden vowed to take away from us.

When Bobby first started running, his YouTube was loaded with light-hearted and informative content. He was his own influencer. Now, though, his feed is attack-dog business and very boring. He's just another pol who's probably looking for some influencer to promote him.

Are you talking about X?

rhhardin said... The Dem strategy is actually ballot harvesting.

Indeed. Well organized, well funded, and working hand in glove with local elections officials in targeted districts. Everything else is just background noise.

Ann Althouse said...

I rarely go to X. If I'm sitting back and want something enjoyable, I look at TikTok. If I'm reading looking for news and bloggable items, I'm using a browser and going to websites. I read mainstream media sites. I occasionally click into X (using the browser), but it doesn't really work for me as a place to find things or to think about the news or whatever.

Leland said...

I agree with Althouse about X and Facebook, but to say it is just about TikTok is a bit far. People who like short format like TikTok. Those who like long form like YouTube.

Kate said...

"Are you talking about X?"

No, still YouTube.

I read, or watch video of, Scott Adams, Dershowitz, Taibbi, Greenwald and Turley on X.

X has become the central switchboard writers go to shop their work. If you follow half a dozen journalists on X, you are referred to every article in every MSM outlet that attracts serious attention. The problem is that discussion is useless, as all of the above are flooded with bot commenters.

I use Facebook to keep in touch with actual friends and relatives, and for affinity groups like Route 66 and various car marques. The fact-checkers on FB can be rather odd. I shared a post purported to show Queen Elizabeth examining a Ferrari, and the post said she was a certified Ferrari mechanic. I was chastised for posting misinformation, with a warning that further infractions could result in suspension of my account. That made me wonder if FB allows such posts as a 'gotcha' strategy. That's the only reason I can see for them to allow the post in the first place.

I visit X daily, comment on rare occasions, but trying to use it as a news feed is like trying to get a drink from a fire hose.
