I went to Tufts for my regular 6 month appointment and…the black lady in charge of finance ‘left’ late summer, they laid off 400 staffers including the receptionist that kept the clinic running, replaced by black women with neck tats and a strong social relationship with each other but not much else. My doctor ordered labs but warned me the company the hospital outsourced all lab work was not ‘reliable’. Two black women with a strong relationship to each other but not much else. I couldn’t tell if they had neck because they stayed in the lab and yelled one patients name from the lab 20 yards away in the 20 minutes I waited but never appeared…

So here is the news one day later that Patti Smith has been hospitalized in Italy. Got sick while on tour. She is still rocking it at the published age of 76.

The lyrics of Because the Night have some punch to them, including the line about "the way I feel under your command." And I love the New Jersey snarl that comes out almost every time she hits a "now," of which there are plenty.

Here's one recording with the lyrics. Fwiw, Natalie Merchant also does a nice version of it on "Unplugged," very straight but with a couple of those Natalie enunciations and specialties. Made me smile.

There's a chart, too, if you're feeling subliterate. If you're wondering who gives the most, the Top 5 are Lithuania, Estonia, Norway, Denmark, and Latvia, though all but Denmark have borders with Russia and could plausibly argue that they need to spend their money defending those. And Denmark is vulnerable to the Baltic Sea Fleet.

There are a couple of commenters here who, like people of the left who can't refrain from dragging Trump into every damn thing, have been dragging Crack into every damn thread. I agree with this part - gilbar, why? (To be fair, Crack has inserted his take on the Israeli-Hamas conflict into many threads entirely unrelated to it. And to this I say, Crack, why?)

But Crack. You know it's not everyone here. And yet you ALWAYS accuse EVERYONE here of the offenses - if they are offenses; perhaps "actions" is a less loaded term - of a few - at least, that's what "y'all" means in Texas: everyone. But disagreement with you, or questioning the veracity of your sources, is not the same thing as denigration of you, and I know you know that.

And it's not just that you're currently accusing everyone of dragging you into threads you haven't yet entered. You are - as you tend to do - accusing everyone here of being racists. Why do you do that? Even if that's what you believe, why would you just throw out such an incredibly toxic accusation, ALL the time, without ever offering the slightest remedy for anyone who might be inclined to take it - or be inclined to argue with you about its necessity? All you ever say is, "Y'all are racists - be better," when what you actually experience here is the same sharp-edged discourse that every single commenter who disagrees with the majority experiences - with, as far as I can recall, even fewer truly personal attacks based on immutable characteristics than are leveled at other heterodox commenters (like inga for instance - how many references to her age and sex?). You get slagged for your positions and you get slagged for your attempts to turn or dominate the thread, but you don't get slagged for being black, as far as I can tell. You do sometimes get slagged for emphasizing that you're black (why bother?), similarly to the way Chuck (I think it's big-C Chuck) gets slagged for reminding everyone that he's a lifelong Republican. (Side note: wouldn't it be something if, as is asserted by many here about Chuck, you're not what you claim to be? Whoa.)

Thus, my father, who had been brought into the Army with the rank of Captain, was issued a sidearm, a 45-caliber M1911, so that he could accompany his wife and daughter to the beach.

I have pondered, how seriously my father took the threat to his nascent family. But he arranged to keep the weapon, when he was discharged. Interesting idea. We could tweak it to test a broader range of hypotheses. For instance, I tend to read the short comments just to see what he’ll say next, but I skip the longer ones as the payoff is unlikely to justify the investment. I followed your link, and you're correct. There are 29 nations that contribute a greater share of their GDP to Ukraine than the US does (assuming the chart and figures are correct).
Of those 29, 29 are European nations. Nations that have legitimate concerns about Russian behavior with respect to established borders.

What concern is a border dispute between Ukraine and Russia of ours? Specifically, why should my kid risk his life over this? Why should my tax dollars, which are borrowed from Chinese investors and will be repaid by my grandkids, pay for this?

I'm not as hostile to our involvement as tim in VT, but I do not see what our national interest is in this fight (other than avoiding inconvenient reveletions about our president's corruption).; 12/14/23, 8:13 AM

What concern is it of ours? Bill Clinton made it our concern by signing an agreement guaranteeing Ukraine's 1991 borders in return for their disarmament. Maybe he shouldn't have done that, but he did, and we are now obligated to arm Ukraine.

Failing to do that is an utter disgrace that will have devastating long-term consequences to the U.S. A Chinese invasion of Taiwan is now far more likely, and that would totally wreck the world computer and electronics supply, making the coming recession/depression far deeper. It's pretty obvious that Hamas' atrocities in Israel, Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, and Venezuela's imminent invasion of Guyana are all being pushed by Russia, the first two by their ally Iran. Whether we help Ukraine or not, Putin thinks he's at war with us already, and not helping Ukraine just encourages him to do more.
