"I still to this day call it the worst meeting I have ever had. He was 99 or 100 at the time."

"We said, 'We think what you did was absolutely incredible and we would love to make a film about that particular moment in your life.' He said, 'Oh, no one else needs to know what I did. No one else. Anyone who needs to know about this, already knows about it.'"

Wow! What a great article. I was vaguely familiar with the story, but that was worth the read.

The reaction to saving Jews can’t be assumed to be positive anymore.

I don't usually read The Guardian because of its left-wing politics, but this is a very moving and well written article. When the producer approached Sir Anthony Hopkins about playing the lead role of Sir Nicholas Winton, Hopkins came back with a simple question about Winton's daughter, Barbara: "Would it be possible to get Barbara’s email because I want to ask permission to play her father?"

Good for Winton! I don't think I'd heard of him in particular but I have heard other, similar, stories. A true hero and I look forward to the movie.

Nevil Shute (aviation entrepreneur and novelist) wrote a novel in 1941 along these lines called Pied Piper. A 70 year old Englishman was fishing in the south of France when the Germans invaded. As he made his way across occupied France he accumulated a gaggle of children that he eventually got out to England. I understand it was a fictionalized version of real events.

Interesting plot point is that just before he got to the coast they were captured and the German colonel wanted to shoot the Englishman as a spy. They children would have been treated with National Socialist hospitality ie; badly.

But the colonel agreed to let them all escape if he would take his daughter with them and assure that she got to the colonels brother in Milwaukee.

And it ended happily, at least for this bunch.

The 1942 movie, starring Monty Woolery as the Englishman and Otto Preminger as the colonel was nominated for Academy Award for Best Picture, Monty Woolley for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Edward Cronjager for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White.

An inspiration in these times. Will we ever hear of a person helping Gazan children escape their war and live normal lives, or is perpetual genocidal war against Israel to be their fate, for the greater glory of Islam?

But then how can we make money off this?

This post is why I keep coming back to Althouse Blog. So many other blogs that I read are like echo chambers, a beehive, like the Borg, where nothing other than pro-Trump posts are approved. Or sources that are routinely pro-Trump. If you disagree, than you will be vilified. You must be assimilated! This blog is different, and that is why I keep coming back.

What does Trump have to do with this topic, lonejustice? Have you looked diligently for blogs where anti-Trump is more likely? I'm pretty sure they're out there.

He is the definition of charity.

An excerpt of the TV program mentioned in the Guardian article is available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/PKkgO06bAZk?si=pTktyPox7AW-7VJ9

To say that is very touching would be an understatement.
