"Why are they debating? Presidential candidates typically do not debate people who are not themselves running for president."

"Mr. Newsom had challenged Mr. DeSantis to a debate more than a year ago, when the Florida governor had not officially begun his campaign but had long been seen to be preparing a run for the presidency. Mr. Newsom’s participation is likely to further fuel speculation that he has his eye on the White House. But the unusual spectacle reflects the current state of the presidential campaign.... Mr. Newsom has also been eager to further raise his national profile, and Mr. Biden needs powerful surrogates who can help make the case for a second term...."

Is there some possibility that Newsom will perform so brilliantly that there will be a resounding acclamation and the Democrats will turn, en masse, toward him as their 2024 candidate? I don't think he's got it in him. As for DeSantis, I think we know he's dull in debate. But perhaps Hannity is the secret ingredient. What if Hannity works some magic and Newsom and DeSantis are both launched into becoming their party's candidate in 2024?

Hannity can't stop from launching into his litany. I'll be surprised if the other two get more airtime than him.

Newsom is the model of the democratic/dictatorial political fetish, a dull progression of modern culture where debate is wrought with diversity, inequity, exclusion.

In the new American politics post-2012, there is absolutely nothing a traditional political debate is going to reveal to anyone not already in agreement with your views. Point scoring is dead in a system where your adversaries are in charge of the scoreboard and will add and subtract points at their leisure, especially when your own party is the one selecting the Manchurian moderator.

Competent, considerate and skilled at running effective government sounds good right about now. Desantis is the only candidate that meets that criteria. I'm down with the Dull.

Newsom debates DeSantis. Hilarity ensues.

They're debating because:
1: It gives DeSantis a chance to show off that he can go head to head against a Democrat and win
2: It gives Newsom a chance to try to show that he is a viable national politician

A large pool of people believe the Biden campaign will implode, and be replaced. Newsom's auditioning for the replacement

CA Democrats have a problem: they win by being "Democrat", not by any actual merit. Which leaves them completely unprepared to compete on a national stage. It's why you also see almost no Democrat black politicians in Statewide and National offices: the actions that get you a victory in a "majority minority" district are not conducive to victory on a larger scale

Let's see. Newsom is supposedly a loyal Democrat, and he's not running for the Democrat Presidential nomination, so he has to defend Biden in the debate with DeSantis, right? If he doesn't support Biden, then he's a sneaky little turn-coat. If he doesn't support Biden effectively, then he's branded himself a loser. If he supports Biden effectively against a second-tier Republican, well whoop-de-doo! What does he do for an encore, debate the shade of
Harold Stassen?

Trump will win the Republican primary. Then he will lose the general election to Biden, just like he lost the popular vote to Biden in the last election, just like he lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton. Independents and moderates, who decide elections, will not vote for Trump. When Trump loses, as he will, then as always, all of his supporters will claim voter fraud, just like they did in the last election. The result is that Biden will be President for 4 more years. Thank you Donald Fucking Trump.

Debates are dull. Arguments are lively.

Debates deal with information. Arguments are emotion driven.

If anybody is unfamiliar with Gavin “Brylcreem” Newsom, there’s a YouTube video approximately 10 years old of an Adam Carolla interview of Newsom that is highly amusing and leaves no doubt as to his whole comedy act.

This is going to be a failure for DeSantis. He's not going to get lucky and land a killing blow on Newsome, and risks coming off poorly against the more telegenic CA gov. Plus, it smells of desperation, seeing as it comes in the midst of his presidential primary campaign where he's down in the polls.

I don't see what DeSantis thinks he can gain from this. Maybe a VP offer?

I guess a lot can happen between now and next November, but I think his key goal right now should be to not ruin his chances in 2028. He may see it differently. I tend to be risk averse.

I've heard Newsom extemporize. I will be amazed if he doesn't simultaneously bore and irritate everyone in the audience.

Count on that ol' Hannity magic.

Heh.

We are in a really weird place.

Not only is DeSantis sitting at the kids table in the GOP race with everyone not DJT, he decided to challenge someone to a fight at the bike racks in a desperate attempt to look like a 'grown up'.

Good luck with that

All very good questions.

Why does a journalist debate with an editor to publish a handmade tale?

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Why... I'm asking why?! h/t Enigma recorded on a disc.

So he's like a pinch hitter. Is that right? I don't really follow baseball, so I might have the analogy all wrong. Seems unusual for a president to be unable to speak on his own behalf.

I’d be impressed but probably not enough to cast a vote for either.

I would probably never watch this debate.

Independents and moderates, who decide elections, will not vote for Trump.

George W Bush won reelection in 2004 while losing independents.

Barack Obama won reelection in 2012 while losing independents. He won Ohio while still losing independents in the state.

Trump can lose independents by 4-5 points and still win AZ, GA and WI. Heck, losing Inds by 4 points would put him within striking range in PA, far better than any other GOP candidate in the past 30 years.

Biden is likely to lose at least 3-4 points among independents just based on historical trends. That doesn't include accounting for the polls which show Trump and Biden neck and neck among independents.

The fact that DeSantis is taking time from his campaign to debate newsome, shows his campaign is over.

Newsom has a better chance than Trump of being president on Jan 20, 2025.

Give him credit for going on Hannity. DeSantis too. Hannity rides Trump’s meat.

Gee wiz, this is so confusing. I wonder why ambitious politicians would want to perform political stunts that would Garner beaucoup attention. It's a real mystery. Maybe a smart person can explain it to us.

That's their hope. They're banking on it. This is his audition. His problem is that there are sooooo soooo many images from San Francisco, LA, Oakland that, well...don't look so good.

"As for DeSantis, I think we know he's dull in debate."
He's not dull. He's just all business. He's not a natural smiley guy. He's not a professional salesman and presenter- like Vivek. He's not a carnival barker like Donald Trump. He's not selling that his vagina is the key ingredient, like Nikki Haley. He just does the work. The hard work. He's a serious man, with a serious mind and he's there to get things done. No clown outfits. No bullshit.

To me, that's exciting.

I'd like to see how DeSantis deals with Newsom's inevitably dishonest defense of California's progressive policies.
Let's see if DeSantis can be effective against a Democrat who isn't senile.

When is the debate?
The 90-minute debate will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30. It will be held without a live audience in Alpharetta, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb. Georgia is a longtime Republican stronghold that has trended bluer in recent presidential and senate elections.

If DeSantis wins, does he get to be the Democratic candidate?

By the way, the Koch foundations announced yesterday that they are endorsing Nikki Haley. So if you love open borders, legalizing all drugs, including hard ones, and "eliminating" the police and incarceration for crime, vote for the lying prostitute in the pencil skirt.

And yes, I would call any of their choice of candidates a lying prostitute. Their last lying prostitute was Gang of Eight Marco!.

The theory that Biden will step aside at the convention and hand it to Newsum sounds plausible me.

It will either be the Crook Husk-Puppet (Biden family/money whores)
or Newsum - the slick hair gel mob butt-kisser and destroyer of CA.

In Democratic Presidential politics, Harris is the heir, Newsom is the spare. Nothing is really being risked by putting up the spare for this debate. What’s the worst that can happen? Newsom catches on and Biden gets to retire.

The betting websites give Newsom a much better chance of being elected President in 2024 than DeSantis. Since Newsom is not even running, that must be embarrassing for DeSantis, but not as embarrassing as the scathing review his debate performance is sure to get from Donald Trump. DeSantis is throwing a Hail Mary and expecting to run down the field and catch it himself.

Tina Trent said...

I wouldn't count on anything starting in Alpharetta, GA at 6:00 unless they're going to borrow the Tardis. And even if they wanted an audience, it would already be stuck on the 400/285 connector, which is routinely in the running as the worst commuter corridor in America. I hope nobody sees a snow flurry. Even a little snow turns Atlantans into The Walking Dead.

Most criticism of DeSantis seems 'personal' and unfounded. Almost like that directed at Trump.

How does DeSantis govern v. Newsom? Has DeSantis stuck with his 'candidate' positions as a governor?

Who had the most sane policies v. Covid - DeSantis, Newsom, Biden - or Trump?

Of the four people above, which one would you choose to lead your Property Owner/s Association, be your partner as a cop, run your kids school, be your son-in-law, pick a competent team to carry out his policies or have the fewest 'yes men' and celebrity friends?

After (maybe) Trump, who does the media, academia and deep state/establishment hate and fear the most?
