The NYT game "Connections" was pretty funny today.

Play here.

IN THE COMMENTS: tcrosse asked, "Is it possible to get three and then miss the fourth?"

It depends on the meaning of "miss" for you. Once you have 3, the 4th must be the remaining 4 items. But until you select them and press "enter," you can still try to discern what the connection is. You know those 4 are connected, but why? If you press "enter," you'll be given the answer. The machine has no way to know whether you figured out the connection, so it will treat you the same if you did or you didn't. That's a bit of a flaw in the game or, if you prefer to see it this way, a matter of private self esteem.

Yes. A good one. A knew what was going on but committed a few mistakes as I worked through it. It was fun.

My wife showed me and her online pals her complete strikeout.

It looks awful to me.

Not another NYT game to be addicted to! (In addition to Wordle and Bee.) It's all your fault, Althouse, I have no control over these things.

My better half and I just finished this a half hour ago. Remember all your magazines

So, I assume you use a box once only once, and have to create four groups that have a connection within the group?

(1) wee, we, wii, and oui

No other grouping for these four make any sense at all- so group 1 is homophones.

(2) ick, pu, ugh, ew

Seems obvious- expressions of disgust

(3) ja, da, hai, si

Again, obvious- foreign words for "yes", which leaves

(4) W, O, OK, US

The connection wasn't fully clear to me since I had never heard of O or W magazine, but I did think of magazines once I had the grouping since I had heard of OK and US.

I didn't know if this was right until I saw Vault Dweller's comment about magazines- then I knew I had all four groupings right.

The mini crossword is free too. It's pretty simple but it is timed.

Today's full-size puzzle is something special.

Crossword puzzle, that is.

The puzzle had disappeared from the link by the time I got around to looking at it very early this morning- the link led me to another puzzle that I solved very quickly, but without a way to confirm I was correct, I did try some other combinations. One of the other things I tried with the puzzle Althouse screenshotted, and that I ended up discarding as wrong, was dealing with the single letters W and O first- magazines definitely was not a thought there- I considered elements tungsten and oxygen, so I created a group with W, O, Si, Pu (silicon and plutonium), but the loss of Si required me to add OK to JA, DA, and HAI, and I had no replacement for Pu in the group ew, ugh, and ick.

@Yancey Ward,
There is a website called "connections archive" not run by NYT - which has the old puzzles, should you want to try them.

Oops, deleted my comment. I thought spoiler tags worked. I might have messed it up. Sorry to anyone who I spoiled part of the game.
