I have more pictures, from this morning, taken around the actual sunrise time, but they don't have the red that was so prominent at 6:35. And before you quote me that "red sky in the morning" business, there is approximately 0% chance of rain today.

A red sky at morning doesn't just mean bad weather. It could be anything that's not good for a sailor...like...it could mean he's going to be rolled by a prostitute...for example.

Monday night I traveled 1.5 hrs west of Madison and spent 3-4 hrs setting up for observing. I invested this time because the cloud forecasts (I consulted 2 sites several times in the days leading up to Monday) called for 100% clear skies, high transparency, and above average "seeing" (atmospheric turbulence). So why did I spend 3 of the dark hours looking up at clouds? Why was the transparency only average and the seeing below average? Because these forecasts are not all they're cracked up to be. I have many nights of experience with this and have learned, sadly, to take forecasts with a grain of salt.
Long-winded way to say "0% chance of rain" does not really mean ZERO chance of rain.
Same pattern lately here in Colorado. Red skies 20-30 minutes before sunrise, minimal chance of rain or snow. Nice reward for getting to bed by 9:30-10 though.

Valley inversions are forecast tomorrow for NW and West Central Montana. Ground fog, cold temps and possibility of some light rain/snow. May burn off by afternoon but our views of Glacier Park and the Swan, Mission and Whitefish ranges will be obscured. Half a century ago I worked in weather for the USAF. Any forecast beyond a 24-hour outlook was mostly a guess. Nowadays the computers and satellites are making mid-range forecasts more accurate. But the WX gods are still heartless bastards.
