"If he wants to run, I think everybody will be 100 percent unified behind him. I mean, maybe 99.9999, but we’re the most unified we’ve been in a very long time."

"Eventually, the party’s going to have to move to younger people being in more control, and that’s natural, but this doesn’t feel like the moment yet."

That is so terribly depressing, but I was cheered up substantially by reading that Bauman is Bowzer from Sha Na Na!

Anyway, we seem to be hurtling toward a rematch of Biden versus Trump. Neither party seems able to break out of the spell cast by its ridiculous old man. On the Democratic side, they've got the incumbent, and they've got the problem of Kamala Harris waiting for her turn. They are locked in.

You'd think the Republicans have more hope of breaking out of the predicament. But the Republicans have Trump, a unique and perplexing problem. And the recent polls show Trump beating Biden:

Man... Do we have to go through all this again? I voted for Trump twice - the first time because I didn't think it mattered and I was definitely not voting for that coattail-riding classist sexual-criminal-spouse-and-defender (how anyone who believes she's a feminist could vote for either Clinton is beyond me), the second time because despite his myriad personal... eccentricities, what he was doing was working.

I don't want to have to do it again, especially since 2020 showed me that there is no way in hell Trump will win beyond the margin of fraud and no way in hell the fraud will be exposed.

There is one ridiculous, corrupt, installed old man (Biden). The other changed the dynamic of everything in a positive way until the establishment released a virus to bring him down, along with his working class supporter (Trump). These two men in no way are comparable, especially in their efforts, policies, and vision for what is better for American lives.

It is amazing to see the 2020 Voter Fraud, instituted by COVID, be just washed away in a sentence as if it no longer matters. "We're moving on"...and pretending everything is ok.

Biden's installation is the fault of 1) people who actually voted for him, 2) people who massaged absentee ballot numbers in targeted swing states, and 3) the people who at the time just didn't want to face that reality.

For group #3. You are now living the reality of chosen inaction. You went along with the fraudulent program. Why? I don't know. There really wasn't much that could be done when our corrupt, cowardly courts refused to correct the coup. So here we are. You chose this.

Democrats are united only because of the lingering scent of Trump and all the dirty tricks that started in 2016. "We hang together or we hang separately." Their unity will dissolve if Trump doesn't run.

Republicans have a chance of uniting behind someone other than Trump. If they stick with Trump they'll break into two factions and likely lose in 2024.

Jamie is living in the REAL world. Fraud margin HAS to be overcome in PA, WI, MI, AZ, and GA. The fraud has always been exposed, but many choose to turn a blind eye out of fear and comfort in their personal lives.

The new Never Trumpers are simply people who believe DeSantis can overcome the fraud he will face if he is the GOP 2024 nominee. But certainly, the Lincoln Project and Bill Kristol have had and affect on these people. They're exhausted.

Trump's Achilles Heal in the GOP Primary is the poison mRNA shots.

I would vote for Trump again. But if he continues to push the mRNA shots, along with Sean Penn, George Clooney, Pfizer, Pink and Martha Stewart...he's lost me.

If DeSantis gets on the debate stage this summer and is the most anti mRNA shot candidate, I'll vote for him in the primary.

In my view, violating the Nuremburg Code and consciously poisoning the American population with an mandated experimental drug, especially its children, is a deal breaker. Trump is in a tough spot with the shots. DeSantis is not.

"And the recent polls show Trump beating Biden"

Not on a state-by-state basis, in the Electoral College. 2016 was a close call, as was 2020. But Dems have been trying to consolidate their slight blue-state advantage. Whether by cheating I'll let others discuss. Any GOP candidate now has a harder path.

If DeSantis gets in the race, resisting any mRNA mandate and protecting America's children from it is a big variable. Trump can join him in anti-grooming, anti-gender mutilating etc... But Trump can't escape the "vaccine".

Even though us "unvaccinated" are a minority I believe millions of people who took the shots are facing regret, and having second thoughts about if this shit should be shoved into America's youth, or if they want to face booster mandates. If the 18 to 24 year olds wake up and realize its poison, that changes everything.

Trump will win the nomination if DeSantis does not run. He might win the nomination if there are 3-4 other high profile candidates along with DeSantis. Trump would not have won the nomination in 2016 but for the dilution of the rest of the voting pool- in such situations, with a lot of winner take all, first past the post delegate allocations, being the unique candidate in the race is a huuuuuuge advantage. If the party does not want Trump, they need to not vote for him in the primary, and they had better hope the field is really narrow, like just DeSantis, Rubio, or Cruz (Haley is a non-entity).

Imagine how much better off we would be if Trump had won in 2020.

--He'd have beaten the virus (heh) with ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, vitamin D, monoclonal antibodies, ultra-violet treatments, AND the vaccines.

--He'd have bullied CA, IL, and NY to reopen schools sooner. And no masks for schoolkids!

--He'd be smiling benevolently at DeSantis as a great MAGA American and the only guy who could possibly succeed him, since Ivanka isn't interested.

--We'd be on guard against the bad guys in Afghanistan with a small, deadly force of extremely vigilant people. We'd still have $80 billion of military equipment, and the Taliban would not.

--Peace would have advanced in the Middle East (see the Abraham Accords).

--The economy would have snapped back without all the wasteful, inflation-induced spending.

--Smilin' Joe Biden would not be president. "Brandon" would, however, be bogged down in a ten-year long IRS audit of his family's tangled history of back-handers, facilitation payments, and bribes. He would also be fighting off criminal charges of abusing his daughter during those inappropriate daddy/daughter shower sessions that Ashley thinks she remembers.

--Ukraine would be at peace because Putin never would have dared.

--He'd declassify some things and tell us what they are.

--There would be no Chinese balloons flying over the US. The Pentagon would take on a new, more robust flavor. Gen. Milley would have been dismissed while he was on a good-will tour of China and told to find his own way home. A several caches of top secret documents would be found in various insecure spaces controlled by former Gen. Milley, with prosecutions to follow (see David Petraeus).

--We'd only have a year and a half left of POTUS Trump on tap. The Wizard of Mar-a-Lago could look forward to dispensing his wisdom across all media, while America prospers.

Enigma: "Republicans have a chance of uniting behind someone other than Trump. If they stick with Trump they'll break into two factions and likely lose in 2024."

DeSantis could run away with the nomination if he ran to the populist right of Trump on economics (reshoring American jobs, using economic weapons to attack the ChiComs, etc), foreign policy (no more forever wars, forcing Europe to step up, etc), on breaking up the deep state & corrupted national security state, taking the steps necessary to remove the mass influx of Biden illegals and build the wall and curtail illegal immigration to a trickle? Plus if I were Desantis I would hit Trump hard on the vaccine, even though Trump didn't mandate it.

That's to name just a few items.

However, I don't believe DeSantis will be willing to do any of that as 95% of his funding are from the very people that don't support ANY, and I mean ANY, of those things.

I suspect DeSantis will simply continue to ratchet up the anti-woke culture war stuff (which is a good thing overall) but will be doing it in order to avoid having to address the items listed above, amongst others.

The "fear", I should say "concern" regarding DeSantis is based on who his advisors are and who his major funders happen to be. Further, DeSantis has a history of being a real Paul Ryan acolyte while in the House of Representatives.

And so we once again reach the point where we ask the same question that has been asked every day for about a year now on Althouse blog and which has never been answered by any early DeSantis supporters:

How can we get "Trump policies but without the Trump drama" with DeSantis when everyone who is working on the DeSantis campaign are GOPe/DC insiders (with the exception of comms person Pshuw) and all the major funders of DeSantis oppose just about every policy Trump pushed?

Is DeSantis really going to take guidance from the GOPe advisor insiders and collect $2 Billion in cash from people opposed to Trump policies and then tell them all to lump it and that he is going to push economic nationalist populist policies?

Well, at this point in time, color me.....skeptical.

I will say this: I would absolutely love to be proved wrong. But given the parties involved, I suspect I won't be.

And for those "static analysis" types who still, to this very day, have zero understanding of the blue collar, lower/middle class, diverse coalition that Trump engineered and think that pulling out all the stops to try and recover a few % points with democratical-adjacent suburban white women by abandoning all sorts of principled positions, you are going to find out the hard way how DeSantis would fare throughout the industrial midwest.

And with Ronna Romney back in charge at the RNC, the McCain/Ducey/Murkowski/Raffensberger corrupted GOPe-ers will continue to work hand in glove with the democraticals to deliver all electoral mechanics into democratical hands while refusing to upgrade RNC systems/processes to improve get out the vote/ballot capture operations. It will all be more of the same "reward the DC consultant class" shenanigans.

If Comey had not been corruptly pro-Hillary, she would have been arrested for classified document violations during the 2016 Democrat Primary, if not earlier

Comey only reported the Weiner laptop because the NY FBI agents who he'd been stonewalling for the last month were getting ready to go public.

Then Comey flat out lied and claimed that they'd examined the laptop and not found anything on it, when in fact that hadn't looked at it at all.

DeSantis falls for culture provocations way too easily. He will be far more easily managed by the ruling elite than Trump.

Here is how it works:

Put on a drag show in Florida with sexualized content and ensure that children are there.
DeSantis responds in high dudgeon
Media reports the story as DeSantis being secretly gay or hating gays, leaving out key details of the original provocation.
Women refuse to vote for the guy who "hates gays."

Classic.

Here is another:

Put a convicted rapist in a woman's prison because he says he is really a girl.
Story comes out that fellow inmates have had to resort to taking birth control out of fear of rape, after having seen such rapes happen to other inmates by this girl with a working penis.
Republicans are outraged by this cruel and inhuman punishment visited on the "cis-gender," let's say, inmates.
MSM reports the story of how Republicans hate trans people, leaving out key details of the story.
Women are upset that Republicans hate young, vulnerable, sexually confused children, and vote for Democrats.

Textbook.

I'm excited to vote for Biden. He's been pretty great. Incredible legislative accomplishments -- way more than I expected given the Senate split. So far has avoided the standard traps Republicans set, which Obama fell into hook line and sinker. Limiting his engagement in the culture wars while Republicans add every day to their list of enemies among the American public. Quietly getting stuff done while the right rages and froths at the mouth. Presiding over a strong economic recovery with record low unemployment while leaving Republicans to gasp that the stats are lying and to whine about last year's gas prices. Driving huge manufacturing growth -- what Trump promised but failed completely to deliver. Gets more credit than Trump for Trump's signature achievement, the vaccines!

I thought he was a good strategic candidate in 2020. Now I think he's just a good candidate, as old as he is. Plus, the Republicans are a disaster.

Trump is flailing around looking for some reason that's he's running.

I kind of agree with this. But, no way will Democrats attack the vaxx. The issue, for me, is the backers and donors for DeSantis. They are the old guard and How can we get "Trump policies but without the Trump drama" with DeSantis when everyone who is working on the DeSantis campaign are GOPe/DC insiders (with the exception of comms person Pshuw) and all the major funders of DeSantis oppose just about every policy Trump pushed?

That is the key issue. Trump is trusted by the base. The RNC is not.

But even you can recognize that in the end DeSantis is likely going to stick with the globalists who back him and be a part of the machine that screws over the republican base again. Again, I hope to be proven wrong....but I wont be.

And the "ever Trumpers" aren't ever-Trumpers. We are ever-economic-nationalists and so far, Trump is the only one talking that game. The economic nationalist position is wide open for anyone who wants to step in. That so few do when the republican base is 70% on board with it tells you all you need to know about your DC heroes.

"I'm not seeing the comparison."

1. Charismatic populist with an absolute lock on the party base but not enough general appeal to win the election blocks any challengers for multiple elections. Yes, Trump, unlike Bryan, won once because a lot of Dem voters didn't bother to go to the polls since the outcome was a foregone conclusion. Hey maybe I'm wrong about that, but it's what it looked like to me. It gives me no pleasure to say this...

2. Big money interests kneecap charismatic populist (surely you agree with this one?).

Of course, scarily, I think an even closer parallel to Trump is Salvador Allende (think about it...)

Oh, and yes, Trump also won in 2020 when you account for vote fraud, but that's where we are, Republicans have to win above the fraud margin. Maybe the fraud margin is now infinite. Sadly, it's possible 2016 may have been the last honest election in American history (hence my other Trump comparison).

Drago, I'm open to this. If DeSantis resists the Ryan/Jeb Bush wing I might be in. The Ryan/Bush wing is pro-mRNA. At the moment DeSantis is not...and his stance is it has harmed people. If he goes after Pfizer and Moderna's legal liability, that a big separation that has to be settled.

DeSantis can steal the MAGA base by going anti-mRNA, but that separates him from the GOPe. Trump can only go anti-mandate. Both are good. One better than the other.

I think it's an undefined situation at this point. Take it to the primary and primary debates as it should be done. I hope DeSantis jumps in. And I'm obviously a Trump fan. Epic battle. Whoever wins comes out stronger. Good. Both need the MAGA base.

You are correct: I never will "get" how anyone sane can say "this person is doing great things, I have no complaints about what he's done, but he lets these other people give him money so I refuse to vote for him."

I have repeatedly asked for specifics about what DeSantis has done that's bad, and received nothing.

So, once again, I'll point out what could rationally be considered makes against DeSantis:

1: If DeSantis runs his Presidential tcampaign team with different people than just ran his re-election race, and the new people are Jeb! people, that would be bad.
So if that's happening, provide names and positions

2: If DeSantis starts caving on issues, that's bad

DeSantis taking money from idiot Jeb! supporters is NOT bad. it means they can't give that money to far worse candidates.
DeSantis repeating what he did for the 2022 re-election is not bad. If he had a "campaign advisory board" full of cucks in 2022, he obviously ignored everything they said. So I could not care less if he lets them keep on "advising" him.

Let's do a quick review of 2022:
DeSantis:
Ran as a conservative
Governed as a conservative
Actually fought Disney, and started the process of screwing them to the wall
Organized and supported parents fighting left wing school boards, and brought them to massive victories in November

Trump:
Got a lot of candidates who won GOP primaries, then mostly left them hanging to LOSE in November

I'm not interested in "fighting", I'm interested in "fighting and winning"
DeSantis won
Trump lost

So, please explain to me why I would want to back Trump over DeSantis

Let’s not kid ourselves about the last election. It had nothing to do with Trump. We were the targets. Those of us who voted for Trump were to have learned this lesson: You will accept a candidate that the bureaucrats/deep-staters have chosen or you (that’s us)will be defeated. They gamed the election. They censored Trump, they censored conservative opinion, they lied about Hunter Biden’s laptop, they fabricated out of whole cloth collusion between Trump and Russia. They also meddled with the voting process and with the votes.
Now we (all of us voters) need to decide - knowing all of the above - how to proceed.
For those of us who want to dump Trump and support DeSantis what does it say about us? In other words what will DeSantis and every other Republican candidate know about us, their supporters. When the going gets tough, we run in search of another candidate.
We want to be liked and we’ll sacrifice our children’s future in the desperate hope that Joy Behar won’t call us racists/sexists/homophobes.
The road ahead is a tough one. The conservative candidate we choose must know in his bones that we will never forsake him as long as he fights for us.
If DeSantis becomes our candidate, instead of President Trump, he will know from the start that he needs to make peace with the powers behind the throne because we don’t have the stomach for a real fight.

The list of issues/concerns have been laid out now hundreds of times.

It's pointless to continue.

We will see what DeSantis does re: economic confrontation with China, holding the EU/Nato accountable, closing the border, attacking the deep state, reshoring of jobs, and on and on and on.

Until then, yes we all love the culture war stuff and it needs to be done and DeSantis is doing it, but as has been pointed out, again, hundreds of times (not an exaggeration), the understanding is that DeSantis will continue to double/triple down on the stuff in order to build the street cred as a populist conservative but will not come thru as an economic populist/conservative or America firster.

That is why I've said its useless to discuss this further. ALL of DeSantis' major funders, which now includes the Koch brothers, want absolutely nothing to do with any of Trump's economic or Foreign policies...but they are still comfortable funding DeSantis.

So we will simply have to sit back and see what we will see.

At some point, things will become so obvious that even HBTPFH might notice them, though I calculate that as a very low probability event.

in the one I inhabit, DeSantis fought the "cultural elite", fought Disney, and supported ordinary parents vs the Establishment.

And the parents he supported won.

Well, so long as your position is total BS, yes it's pointless for you to continue.

So long as the totality of your case against DeSantis is "he takes money from people I don't like", your position is stupid, and it's pointless to continue.

Here's what wouldn't be pointless:

1: DO you have a problem with how DeSantis governed FL in 2022?
2: Do you have a problem with how he campaigned in 2022?
3: Do you have a problem with his support, or lack of support, for candidates in 2022?

Note: "who he took money from" or "he had these people listed as part of his campaign" does NOT count as valid "I have a problem with how he campaigned in 2022".

"He screwed over these Populist GOP candidates" would be a valid complaint, if true. For which you would need to name names and give links to the things he did wrong.

If you don't have a problem with how he campaigned (as I defined the issue) then you dont' have a legit gripe about the people he "has on his campaign." Because clearly they had no ability to screw things up the way they would have done if they had actual power.

News flash: GOP populists can't win without GOP non-populists.

If you want to win, then you need non-populists to vote for your candidates.

So, the question remains: do you want to win?

Or do you want to have a purity wankfest?

Eva Marie said...

“News flash: GOP populists can't win without GOP non-populists.”

And GOP non-populists can’t win without populists. The fight for Speaker illustrated that point.
So how did Arizona fare winning and electing John McCain time after time? How did the nation do electing both Bushes? After all those winning elections are we more free or less free?
The problem is that we populists in the Republican Party have always played by the rules. In the end we always vote for and support the Republican candidate. What about the non populists? Did they support Trump, did they vote for Trump? Did Bush 2 - the guy who had tears in his eyes every time he met a service member - did he support Trump? And then when Trump lost and Biden destroyed everything that Americans worked so hard for in Afghanistan, did Bush say one word?
I’ll support you non-populists if every single GOP leader - that includes Bush, Cheney, McConnell, etc. comes out today and says unreservedly that they will support and campaign for whoever wins the Republican nomination.

We will see what DeSantis does re: economic confrontation with China, holding the EU/Nato accountable, closing the border, attacking the deep state, reshoring of jobs, and on and on and on.

DeSantis sent border crossers to Martha' Vineyard. I think he'll do just find on the border crossers.

Where has he FAILED to do any of the above?

Until then, yes we all love the culture war stuff and it needs to be done and DeSantis is doing it, but as has been pointed out, again, hundreds of times (not an exaggeration), the understanding is that DeSantis will continue to double/triple down on the stuff in order to build the street cred as a populist conservative but will not come thru as an economic populist/conservative or America firster.

And your proof for this claim is?

That is why I've said its useless to discuss this further. ALL of DeSantis' major funders, which now includes the Koch brothers, want absolutely nothing to do with any of Trump's economic or Foreign policies...but they are still comfortable funding DeSantis.

What's he given them in exchange for that money?

Absolutely nothing?

So you're really upset that he's taking money that would otherwise be spent on worse politicians?

So the big money people you dont' like, what would they want DeSantis to do over the next two years that you dont' like?

Or are you just making the claim that "I know he'll do bad things if he gets elected", while ignoring all the good things he's done since getting elected, and ignoring all the bad things Trump did after he got elected?

“News flash: GOP populists can't win without GOP non-populists.”

And GOP non-populists can’t win without populists. The fight for Speaker illustrated that point.

Yep. I point that out to the non-p[opulists on a regular basis. Along with pointing out to them that the GOP Establishment hasn't won a national election since 2004.

Which is why I don't ever support GOP Establishment candidates in any Primary.

None of which changes the fact that populists can NOT win on their own
