Biden Admin Negotiates Deal to Give WHO Authority Over US Pandemic Policies

"The Biden administration is preparing to sign up the United States to a “legally binding” accord with the World Health Organization (WHO) that would give this Geneva-based UN subsidiary the authority to dictate America’s policies during a pandemic.

Despite widespread criticism of the WHO’s response to the COVID pandemic, U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra joined with WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in September 2022 to announce “the U.S.-WHO Strategic Dialogue.” Together, they developed a “platform to maximize the longstanding U.S. government-WHO partnership, and to protect and promote the health of all people around the globe, including the American people.”

These discussions and others spawned the “zero draft” (pdf) of a pandemic treaty, published on Feb. 1, which now seeks ratification by all 194 WHO member states. A meeting of the WHO’s Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) is scheduled for Feb. 27 to work out the final terms, which all members will then sign.

Written under the banner of “the world together equitably,” the zero draft grants the WHO the power to declare and manage a global pandemic emergency. Once a health emergency is declared, all signatories, including the United States, would submit to the authority of the WHO regarding treatments, government regulations such as lockdowns and vaccine mandates, global supply chains, and monitoring and surveillance of populations.

Not sure if this will work, but it's a Google translation of a BBC story on verified Russian casualties.

https://www-bbc-com.translate.goog/russian/features-64506030?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp

They are able to verify 14,000, and assume that the number is probably twice that, though they say that there is really no way to know. Their numbers in the past have been similar to the periodic pronouncements of the Russian MoD. It could just be that Russia is looking to minimize the casualties, but not go lower than the BBC.

The numbers we see in the press here are put out by the Ukrainians, who have their own reasons for lying. It's a war zone, everybody lies. I wouldn't put my faith in what is read in our press on casualties, is all I am saying. We won't know until after the war is over.

As to the question of why hasn't Russia won yet? Well, large offensives take a large toll in men and machines. There is no longer any such thing as a "sneak attack" You can't quietly move a column of tanks into position to attack the way Rommel might have. Both sides know exactly where the other side's forces are located. The Russian side says that they are perfectly content to push against fortifications without exposing their forces too much, and destroy Ukrainian forces as they are sent to reenforce the defenders.

I don't pretend to know. I don't think that this war is any of our business, and by providing Ukraine with weapons, all we are really doing is giving their young men rides their deaths by the thousands. I think that Kiev sees this as a last chance to create a large nation-state like France, Ukrainian border to border, the US sees it as a last chance to cut off Russia from the Black Sea, and doesn't want a peace deal because of the risk that sanctions will be lifted, and the whole point of Biden sending that letter to Ukraine two years ago promising them entry into NATO, which clearly crossed a Russian red line since Gorbachev, was to goad Putin into attacking, and so was the offensive that Kiev was mounting against ethnic Russians in Donbas, while all of Putin's troops were right on the border, it was intended to goad Putin, so that we could inflict punishing sanctions on Russia and drive Putin from office, which has been a goal of the Neocons for years.

I don't think that the neocons should have this much control of our foreign policy. Let them play Risk against each other, and stop ruining lives by the hundreds of thousands.

And BTW, if you wonder why our economy is not doing as badly as was predicted? It's because the sanctions were all for show. If we had really sanctioned Russia and cut off its exports of crude, gas would be six dollars a gallon easily, and our strategic reserve, which is at levels last seen in the first Reagan Administration, would be at Jimmy Carter levels.

India and China are buying all the crude Russia cares to sell, and the US is not going to sanction India, which would hurt Zuckerberg and Bezos, who rely on cheap Indian programmers to keep American wages down, or China, where our economy is utterly interlinked.

This whole thing was a massive miscalculation by Joe Biden's little neocon cabal. That's what Macron's speech was about this week. Tl;dr: "France did everything you asked, but I told you it would not work."

Remember how proud Nancy Pelosi was that Congress prevented Trump from refilling the strategic reserve when oil prices were low? How does that look now? They hated Trump because he blocked their plan for a war in Ukraine, and they laughed at his sound advice; Obama also blocked them, mostly, though Biden and McCain did get their coup; but Obama was mostly untouchable.

‘Doctor Lisa’ is a decent Russian movie available on Amazon. It is about one day in life of Elizaveta Glinka, well known Russian medical humanitarian worker and charity activist. She emigrated to US in 1986, where she studied palliative care and work of hospices. In 1999 she opened the first public hospice in Kiev. She moved to Moscow when her mother became gravely Ill, where she founded humanitarian NGO ‘Fair Care’ to support terminally ill cancer patients and underprivileged and homeless people.

“With the outbreak of the War in Donbass Glinka became involved with evacuating sick and injured children from territory held by pro-Russian separatists. She moved them to hospitals in Moscow or Saint Petersburg, where they could receive medical attention. It has been estimated that she travelled more than 20 times into conflict zones, and saved about 500 children. Children were moved across the state border without permission from authorities, leading to accusations of child abduction from Ukrainian government officials. Glinka's response was that politics was irrelevant in matters of life and death.” Source: Wikipedia.

Apparently, that Kiev ‘authorities’ canard about ‘stolen Ukrainian children’ is quite old, at least from 2014. Same Kiev ‘authorities’ that do nothing to help these children and say nothing about radical Ukrainian nationalists bombing civilians in Donbas, killing these children and their families, were always concerned these children can be ‘abducted’ from war zone and moved to safety in Russia.

Nine children were shot Saturday, one as young as 5, at a gas station in Georgia.

You'll note that there's been very little media coverage of this. President Joe Biden has issued no statements condemning this violence and calling for more gun control - common sense gun legislation. He has not vowed to visit the area. There are no White House statements whatsoever. And no reporters have asked the president's spokesman why he has refused to comment on this mass shooting of children.

Why do you think that is?

I mean, NINE CHILDREN were shot at a gas station. It's hard to know why all these kids would be out at 10pm at night at a gas station.

Also there have been no arrests made. Nobody seems to know who shot 9 kids. Amazing jobs the cops are doing on this case.

Right Winger thoughts on WHY UKRAINE.
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Thursday defended the continued aid that the United States is providing to Ukraine to defend itself against Russia, saying that as a country “we care about human life.”
Romney said in a video post on his Twitter account that the U.S. support for Ukraine is both the “right thing” to do and necessary for U.S. national security interests.
“I begin, of course, with just the humanitarian reality, which is we care about human life and about the suffering that’s going on in Ukraine,” he said. “We’re just appalled by the fact that Russia has invaded a peaceful, sovereign nation next door.”
Romney said the U.S. has more prosperity when the world is more peaceful, and conflict makes the U.S. “less well off.”
He said history has shown that when one country sees that it can invade another country without any consequence or reaction from others, that type of mentality continues spreading throughout the world and eventually involves the U.S. getting attacked.
“That’s one of the lessons of history, which is that violence in the world spreads, and it ultimately comes to our own shores,” he said.
Romney said Russia is a “geopolitical adversary,” and the U.S. is helping to deplete the Russian military through its aid to Ukraine. He said Russia is China’s only “real” ally, so weakening Russia is also an effective way to weaken China.
He said the spending given to Ukraine is “of the same manner” of the spending for national defense. He said the U.S. spends about $750 billion on national defense, and the $20 billion to $40 billion being spent on Ukraine is “basically in the same category.”
“It is defending American interests, America’s national security against adversaries that would threaten us,” he said.
Romney’s comments come as the U.S. has committed to sending 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine to help step up its defenses against Russia.
Bipartisan support for continuing aid for Ukraine has remained strong, but some more conservative Republicans have raised questions about the amount of aid that the U.S. is sending to Ukraine.
The government funding omnibus bill that was passed last month allocated an additional $45 billion for Ukraine.
MJT also needs to know why when she asks, I would suggest she see the guy where she works or just read what his opinion is.

In the late 60's, much to the consternation of certain members, Smith invited the long-haired dope-smoking hippies to his church. The subsequent spectacular growth of the church was called the Jesus Movement. Calvary Chapel now has over 2000 churches across the country. Mrs. Dink was an early participant. Smith died in 2013.

@tim in Vermont:

the article you cite says this:

"The total irretrievable losses of Russia (that is, the number of those who are out of action due to injury, death or missing) can be at least 117,000 people."

Got that?

As for neocons running things, you assume people who have no actual political power are able to overrule those who do. The Biden administration ALONE has the power to release weapons, funding, training and the rest to the ukrainians.

Disagree? TELL US HOWthe "neocons" control the Biden administration.

Myself, I'd like to break my ankle off in the asses of Graham and Bolton, who never met a war they didn't like. BUT THEY HAVE NO POWER TO FORCE THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION TO DO ANYTHING.

As for "sneak" attacks: what bullshit. A year ago Russia sent a 40 km convoy of tanks, trucks and APCS in to Ukraine to roll over the Ukrainians and take over. They failed, because the Russkis don't have fucking clue about "logistics". They still don't, relying on train lines and limited truck routes to get stuff to their troops.

Your problem, tim, is...YOU WANT RUSSIA TO WIN.

Fuck you.

I support supporting Ukraine, albeit with more auditing of those corruptocrats.

A lot of this feeling is because the U.S. and the EU laid the groundwork for the war.

"Short" version, after the fall of the USSR "we" promised not to bring NATO to Russia's border and in 2004 NATO added the Baltics. Russia said, you suck, but don't go any further or they'll be real trouble. "Belarus and Ukraine are big red line and must be Finlandized."

In spite of this, the West constantly offered NATO and EU membership. This was completely unrealistic since Ukraine wouldn't pass EU corruption standards for decades and Germany would have vetoed their NATO bid anyway. It was just rattling the Bear's cage.

2014 and the EU + U.S. overthrows the pro-Russian Ukie gov't. Ukraine joining NATO would cost the RUssians their Black Sea [Mediterranean] naval base, even though the Crimea has always been Russian, except for a few decades in the Soviet era. The Russians invade and not much happens. The Obama admin and EU still don't send lethal aid.

Fast forward, still talking about NATO and EU membership for Ukraine, rattling the ol' cage, the Russians gear up and the U.S. does nothing, no lethal military aid, no punishing sanctions, unless Putin actually invades. Just another Dem admin violating Gen'l Forrest's maxim, "Get there firstest with the mostest."

All in all, I feel we owe the Ukraine our prompt and full support. That it leaves the U.S. without war stocks, probably better to know that sooner than later. The Ukies are dying for the West's strategic arrogance.

The answer to WHY Russia couldn’t crush Ukrainian resistance, even if it is inflicting greater casualties, is because casualty rates often don’t matter.

It didn’t matter in Vietnam, where US had absolutely overwhelming casualty rates against Vietnamese resistance. It didn’t matter in Iraq and it didn’t matter in Afghanistan. Despite inflicting horrible casualty rates, US had to eventually give up and withdraw.

The deciding factor is which side is determined to continue fighting, no matter the casualty rates.

Allegedly, Mel Gibson is in pre-production about a sequel to Passion of the Christ..

This one will be called Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.

Interesting stuff about the movie here.

The sequel will be called The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, which at first glance seems like a logical approach; Christians believe Jesus died and rose from the dead, and The Passion of the Christ ended with the briefest glimpse of the resurrected Jesus. Over the years, however, there have been consistent reports the resurrection itself will not be the main focus; rather, that the film will focus on the three days between Jesus' death and resurrection, where many Christians believe Jesus descended into Hell.

I will definitely watch it! Supposedly to be released in 2024. Screenplay is finished. Gibson is directing. Jim Caviezel is starring again.

Liberals who want to censor great works of art are very dangerous, in my opinion.

Huck Finn is arguably the most important book in the history of the USA.

The people who want to ban Huck Finn are control-freaks and helicopter moms. Can you not read? Can you not understand? You people who want to censor art to "save our children," do you not realize you're calling black people children?

I've never been a Moby Dick guy. I've always been a Huck Finn guy. Most important book! Mark Twain! He's the man!

The N-word shows up 219 times in Mark Twain's classic 1885 tale of childhood adventure “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” which tracks Huck’s flight from his drunken, abusive dad and journey down the Mississippi River with an escaped slave name Jim...

This is one of the most banned books in the history of the USA. It was first banned just two years after its release(!)

People were banning it in 1887! Holy shit.

(I think maybe the Bible has the record for getting banned).

Over the years a number of schools have struggled with keeping the book in their curriculum, citing the offensive nature of the language, which scholars argue Twain used exactly because he wanted to drive home a point about slavery, but also because he was trying to be true to the language of the day. It was first banned just two years after its release, and it remains controversial. In 2011 the book was even revised, when a professor at the University of Virginia released a version that replaced the offending word with “slave.”

Jefferson once took a Bible and cut out all the miracles.

You editors need to be careful that you're not actually control freaks who are not helping anybody!

Apparently the Quakers have given up on reading Mark Twain.

Free speech is important. Free will is important. One of the most important things to understand about God is that he has set us free. It's mind-boggling and super cool.

God doesn't want to control us! He wants to woo us. Our freedom is our greatest and most dangerous blessing. Respect your freedom, don't abuse it, and don't let anybody control your speech, your ideas, or your soul.

To be honest, if only his editor had cut everything that came after Tom Sawyer shows up and tells Huck that Jim was free, and left the book at that, it would have been such a better novel. Instead it goes into several chapters of evil Tom Sawyer putting Jim through minstrel show type hijinks, teasing him, toying with him, kind of ruining the book. Those last few chapters are far more offensive than the language that came before them, and the book would stand as a complete work without the distraction.

Tom was the fool Don Quixote, and Huck was Sancho Panza, the honest man. Twain owed a lot to Cervantes, and those Chivalric romances that Cervantes both mocked and loved.

The Asbury University president persuaded students to end the nonstop part of the revival last night, after 11 days, I believe. School can resume and the local town can recover from the onslaught of eager revivalists from out of state and overseas, if the reporting has been correct.

Not only did the college have to open other spaces and simulcast the chapel events, as though it were the Wimbledon finals, but the spirit caught on elsewhere.

... The Asbury Revival in Kentucky has inspired similar movements at other Christian college campuses after the around-the-clock prayer service went viral on social media.

Similar revivals have emerged at schools like Cedarville University in Ohio; Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama; Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee; and Belmont University in Nashville, according to The Washington Post.

The movements come after thousands from around the world converged on Asbury in Wilmore to participate in services that have continued in the school's chapel almost non-stop since students first refused to leave a worship service on Feb. 8. TikTok videos under the hashtag #AsburyRevival have racked up nearly 70 million views as of Sunday.

... Samford University President Beck A. Taylor noted that "spontaneous, organic, student-led worship" had continued for 48 hours in the chapel of the Birmingham-area school that was founded by Baptists in 1841.

"Having spent some time yesterday with those [worshiping] in Reid Chapel, I can testify that the Holy Spirit is at work in and among our student body," Taylor wrote. "What’s happening isn’t contrived, programmed, or scripted. Nor is it performative or disingenuous."

Up where I live a crowd watching a game or practice would likely have multiple people CPR trained. EVen if they haven't been recertified in the last 2 years- like me. Scouting organizations, all of them, recommend leaders be CPR certified and most require at least basic first aid training. Many of the people living in the srae work for employers who offer discounted or even free CPR courses through the ARC. Facebook is constantly showing CPR classes in or around my rural county. People take advantage of them.

So- it says there was a crowd. Multiple 911 calls- actually the first thing taught in first aid classes- get professionals there ASAP. Why didn't anyone have a clue? Hint- demographics. Eeryone knows the answer, no one will express it out loud.

Dunno. Methinks the bigger anomaly is a freaking 12 y/o having a heart attack.

LLR and Whitmer Fanboy Chuck: "How about, "Until rational Russian dissidents decide that they have had enough, and they assassinate or imprison Putin..."? And if Navalny is freed at the same time, that's a win-win-win-win. Natural gas prices fall, inflation drops to pre-invasion levels, and world equity-market prices increase."

You are like an infant.
