At the Grammy Awards tonight, there will be a performance that will "make a lot of people very upset" and "I guarantee there will be calls to CBS from outraged Christians."

The "I" is an unnamed source, presumably someone with an interest in jacking up ratings for the show.

I'm reading "Sam Smith, Kim Petras 'Unholy' Grammy Performance Expected To Spark Outrage: 'I Guarantee There Will Be Calls to CBS From Outraged Christians'" (Decider).

Predicted outrage, the stupidest form of outrage. I suspect most Christians know not to get triggered by every celebrity jackass who announces they're going to yank your chain tonight.

Sam Smith will be dressed up as Satan. Why, that's as outrageous as a 5-year-old on Halloween!

ADDED: I listened to the song on Spotify and read the lyrics at Genius. It's about a man having sex with a prostitute, and we're told that this sex is "unholy" and that the man is a "dirty, dirty boy."

AND: It seems as though Sam Smith has embraced the old Woody Allen answer to the question "Is sex dirty?"

What are these grammys you speak of

Christians being mocked in the most offensive way possible - stupid Christians should just take it.

Now flip it to something very offensive to Leftists (and everyone else too). Imagine if a performer did a song that repeatedly said all of the "n-words" should go back to Africa.

The CBS building would be on fire within 48 hours and the government would revoke their broadcast license.

The bigots on the Left are like fish in the ocean. They swim in their overt bigotry for their entire lives, so they literally don't know what "wet" means.

You don't have to be a Christian to find these lyrics objectionable. For being stupid and dull, among other faults. Some folks think being queer substitutes for being interesting and creative. It doesn't.

I'll be outraged if Smith pulls that Sharon Stone-lounging-on-a-divan stunt again.

I've seen some of his very juvenile and weird videos.

The man (if he's got a dick that's what he is) is an attention whore and a well-paid novelty act.

I dare him to make videos denigrating Mohammed.

Come on, it will take only one...

So, they’re expecting viewership will be small?

Maybe it’s the auto-tune?

Ann Althouse said...

Maybe they're trying to bring in right-wing anger to block the left-wing anger they deserve — from feminists, from libertines who think sex is not dirty.

Life in death. Meaning in mocking. Significance in taboo. A religion (i.e. behavioral protocol) of the past, present, and progressive writ large.

That said, unlike secular religions dictated by mortal gods, goddesses, and experts that operate through coercion, force, and mandate, God's religion does not deny, but rather advises. Caveat emptor.

John said...

This won't be true as there will be vey few Christians who will watch.

feminists, from libertines who think sex is not dirty

Masculinists, pedophiles, and casting couch directors, too.

That said, libertarians and anarchists do not in principle think that "sex is dirty".

Conservative centrists certainly do not, but recognize rights and responsibilities. After all, men and women are equal in rights and complementary in Nature/nature, which requires reconciliation.

Anything for ratings. That’s the reason for the pre-announcement.

I see that as marketing/clickbait in hopes of getting someone, anyone to watch Grammy's awards. Did anyone know it was on tonight?

You're already outraged, success!

Here I was taught about turning the other cheek and seem to recall a schoolyard taunt about words no able to hurt me ... but you do your version of Jesus.

Big Mike said...

Mocking Christians is pretty yawn-inducing by now. After “Piss Christ” there isn’t a whole lot further down they can go and still get it on TV.

nbks said...

No one cares. I predict the Grammies will have their lowest ratings ever despite this person's effort to gin up controversy.

Say the Jews control the Record industry or Hollywood, like Ye, and you will be destroyed and banned from polite society. Push the Muslims too far, and you'll get killed.

Meanwhile, an Artist can go on TV and trash Christianity, and you won't hear a peep. Why would anyone want to associated with such a loser Religion? Maybe CHristians shouldn't be hiding their light under a basket and instead drive the moneychangers from the Temple.

But its a waste of time complaining. They should change the song from "Onward christians soldiers, to "Silent Christian Cucks". And men should look for a more masculine religion. Like Islam.

Wasn't going to watch the Grammy's to begin with. Last years winner "W.A.P." - something I normally like - didn't have much of a hum along melody. And now I read that the Grammy's are going to piss Christians off, purposely no doubt, and that going to convince me to tune in to witness the offending outrage? No doubt it will also lack a humable melody so at my advanced of 70 I think I'll pass use the time to make a balongna sandwich.

If a person wants everyone else to refer to "them" as "they," do "they" refer to "themselves" as "we"? Or is it still "I" and we need a "themself" coinage?

When speaking to people, do we need to reintroduce "thou" so we can distinguish between "you" and "you"? Or do we stick with "you"-singular but adopt "y'all" language-wide? I refuse to do the Pittsburgh (I think it's Pittsburgh) "y'ins," for the record.

Wince said...

So, they are no longer hiding their intentional animus?

Hopefully, saying that means fewer people will be viewing in the first place, and the awards show will be another ratings disaster.

n.n said...

They should change the song from "Onward christians soldiers, to "Silent Christian Cucks"

"that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable"

At least in America, for better and worse, conservative centrism tempered moral ambition with a secular ethical compromise.

As wil most non-Christians.

Because we dont' care anymore what those losers do

I seem to recall a schoolyard taunt about words

Good to know that even you understand you still have the mentality of a 3rd grader, and that "schoolyard taunts" are the height of your "thought" process.

I would be very happy to inhabit a "speech universe" where there was no such thing as "hate speech", and that no one was ever silenced for "hate".

But since we dont' live in that world, I'm all in favor of a world where people are cancelled and censored for directing "hate" at Christians

because the only legitimate rules are those that apply to all

As long as they don't say they are Christians. That would be offensive. The rest is clickbait. Probably JC will come out as trans and be crucified by Romans led by Donald Trump.

I doubt many people - Christians or not - are outraged over something they don't watch or care about.

Feminists, masculinists, too, and certain Liberal sects, believe that sex is dirty, and, in the worst case, produces excess carbon, an environmental pollutant, colloquially known as a fetal-baby or the baby "burden" h/t Obama, which social justice authorizes under their ethical religion to be aborted, perhaps recycled, then sequestered for social, redistributive, clinical, political, criminal, and fair weather progress.

The Grammies are tonight? Who knew! Another aren't-we-the-greatest award shows. I'll pass. I'd rather watch my new lawn come up. I spread grass seed last October and some patches are coming up. Much more entertaining than any self-congratulating awards show.

It’s like the laugh track that tells you you just heard a joke and prompts you to laugh because otherwise you might not, they’re so desperate to get virtue points for offending the Christians that they’re practically begging people to get offended.

Next year, Muslims? In which case I guarantee there won't just be calls.

My prediction: It will be like the "right wing outrage" over the Pink Floyd rainbow logo. Some left-wing people will posts tweets that are clearly sarcastic (what they imagine right-wing people would say), an online news source will screen shot the tweets and attribute them to right-wingers, people will share the story and claim that those right-wingers are intolerant idiots.

'I Guarantee There Will Be Calls to CBS From Outraged Christians'"

After some retrospection; I'm enjoying Doobs so much I really can't get worked up over what some performer does on live television. It can't be that much worse than the wardrove malfunction at the Superbowl halftime show, all those years ago. And if it is, worse, then what are doing paying for the FCC?

After reading some of the nominees, I am outraged. But as a music fan.

MountainMan said...

Won't be watching. I haven't watched in years. I hate the politics and the stupidity that goes with these shows. I am not at all musical - no talent for it at all - but I enjoy music. Lately, I have been finding most of my musical enjoyment on YouTube. I tend to watch a lot of videos of Joshua Lee Turner (not the country music singer), Allison Young, The MonaLisa Twins, Morgan James, and a few others. James did dozens of covers of popular tunes accompanied by her husband on guitar during the pandemic that I really enjoyed. I frequently watch Postmodern Jukebox, though their videos are kind of hit or miss with me. I have particularly enjoyed the work they have done with Haley Reinhardt, Morgan James, and a couple of videos with Allison Young.

But my favorite YouTubers are "Foxes and Fossils", the Smyrna, GA -based cover band that started about 12 years ago playing in pizza joints and community festivals. It is made up of 3 very talented young women vocalists - Sammie Purcell, Maggie Adams, and Chase Truran - in their mid-20s (the "Foxes") and 4-5 old geezer musicians (the self-declared "Fossils") led by Sammie's dad, Tim. It's not quite fair to just call them a cover band; they are way beyond that. About 3 years ago they began recording in Tim's basement studio during the pandemic and they are really, really good. I suggest if you want to have an enjoyable evening tonight skip the Grammys and check out their channel. I would suggest a starting playlist of their covers of these songs, which are my favorites:

Dedicated to the One I Love - Mamas and the Papas
Telling Me Lies - Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt (Maggie/Sammie/Chase)
Angel From Montgomery - John Prine/Bonnie Raitt (Sammie)
Love is the Answer - Todd Rundgren (Chase)
Harvest Moon - Neil Young (Maggie)
Neon Moon - Brooks and Dunn/Kacey Musgraves (Sammie)
Carry On - Crosby Stills and Nash
Peace Train - Cat Stevens (Darwin Conort, a Fossil)
Southern Cross - Crosby Stills and Nash (Darwin Conort)

Graham Nash, Cat Stevens, and Todd Rundgren have all praised them for the great covers they did of their songs. Carole King loves this group.

This is one of the most entertaining groups I have ever seen. A nice mix of generations, old/new music, varied artists, and great attention to detail. The harmonies are beautiful and the musicians are terrific. Also, no politics, no egos, no stupidity. They even just record in their casual, weekend attire and the old fossils sometimes wear SHORTS (Althouse barfs). Just nice, normal people doing what they love to do and sharing it with all of us. I wish they were my neighbors. Check 'em out.

Sam Smith is struggling to stay relevant IMO. A lot of Look At Me in his persona.

It would be interesting to see them schedule the Grammys for the same night as the Super Bowl. I can’t imagine there’s much overlap of their audiences at this point.

BTW, is there anyone who really looks forward to the actual halftime show anymore? (Other than the overhyped commercials)

"Onward Christian Soldiers" was removed from the latest United Methodist hymnal, and probably other liberal denominations as well. More churches are just putting the words up on a screen and ignoring the hymnal. That allows them to change the words to fit the latest fad. What passes for Christianity these days is pretty weak.

“ Sam Smith? Dead Seattle Councilman from about 20-ya? One of the Lesser Seattle enthusiasts?“

I think it was closer to 40 years ago. I was buddies with his son, Steve. We played football together in high school. Sadly, Steve passed on about 15 years ago. My Mom noticed his passing in the obits.

A good family plagued by health issues.

LOL. This Christian could care less. I had no intention of watching the Grammy's anyway, because they managed to make them meaningless to the large majority of people already. As with the Oscars, they can do whatever they want, I will not watch nor get upset. They are irrelevant to me.

I watched it and it seemed very uncontroversial to me.

I don't think anyone tuning into the Grammys is going to be shocked by what's on there. It's been the way it is for decades. People *do* complain when raunch shows up in a show that is a family event- like the Super Bowl. People just want to be able to give informed consent before they have to watch something raunchy.
