"Masks can make it more challenging for some children to develop early speech and reading skills, which are learned, in part, by observing mouths in movement..."

"[P]arents often asked why their young children had to wear masks when local kindergarten students were allowed to be mask free. The contradictory government mandates have contributed to confusion and skepticism — not only about masking, but also about the efficacy of vaccines, she said, noting that only about 20 percent of her students have been vaccinated...."

What is the reason for treating these children differently from other children? Poverty? I note that there is no mention of race in the article.

Achilles keeps claiming DeSantis is behaving like a "career" politician, never bothering to mention the Governor's prior military service, and stint with the DOJ during the Obama years.

The reason is that the people running the program are stupid, stubborn, and determined to signal their virtue and their opposition to the BadOrangeMan. Masking became a cheap and easy way to do so.

The reason for treating these children differently appears to be solely based on federal vs state or local guidelines.

Bureaucracy, and the unwillingness to give up even the tiniest bit of control, even when it is no longer needed. Which is why we should fear big government. And the Democrats.

It seems to be the real reason stuff like this is happening is there are no negative consequences.

Put a policy in place that yields no protective benefit but results in hurting large amounts of children in their education? No negative outcome for you!

Require mandatory vaccination to federal workers and soldiers even after strong evidence that such vaccination will not prevent infection and transmission, thereby violating individual rights without any commensurate general benefit? No negative outcome for you!

...

The problem that occurred during COVID was that policy makers and bureaucrats did NOT have to balance personal freedoms with societal benefits. They could simply operate restrictions at will with no negative outcomes.

That's something that needs to stop ASAP.

The lowest vaccination rates are among non-White (minority) populations.

The greatest anxiety about COVID and other risks comes from women and (single) mothers. The highest rate of single parenthood is among Black women.

Muriel Bowser, Mayor of D.C., is blocking unvaccinated (read Black) children from returning to school.

https://mayor.dc.gov/release/mayor-bowser-announces-expanded-efforts-encourage-families-vaccinate-children-ahead-upcoming

Lost generation? Falling farther behind? Balanced risk assessment?

@Althouse -- NYT isn't pointing to race because it challenges disproportionate or dysfunctional Black mayor polices (e.g., NYC, DC, Chicago).

It ain't hard to find.

I dunno how common it is to report 'ethnicity' separately from 'race' but this is one of the few times I can recall not seeing Hispanic and non-Hispanic whites lumped in the same category.

The only people still emotionally motivated are parents of toddlers.

After more than two years, there is ample data proving this age group is extremely safe from covid, literally, they are more at risk on their drive to pre school. The population is so dumbed down they are incapable of doing simple risk analysis.

Short answer- Idiots in charge.

More truthful- The DemoncRATs running the programs and issuing the edicts are drunk on power and evil. Also idiots, but that's secondary.

On the national news, they still speak of Covid as an existential threat. It's like a different planet. "Another booster is coming out." I can't even bother rolling my eyes.

jaydub said...

It is child abuse to force masks on pre-school toddlers, that and the fact that young children don't really benefit from the trauma is why the CDC came to their senses and dropped the recommendation for children to wear a mask. Unfortunately, it's going to take a long time to retrain the Covidiots.

Joe Biden and the Democrats control the federal bureaucracy and education from Pre-K through Post Doc. If the NYT found evidence that the policies enacted by all those Democrats caused racial disparities, do you honestly believe they mention it? If they can’t blame something on Trump or climate change instead, they’ll not mention the cause.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

One is tempted to glibly quote Instapundit and say it’s “racism straight up.” But one of the most frustrating features of this administration is the lack of any vocal advocacy of children: no advocate for keeping schools open, for unmasking children, for restraint in vaccinating a demographic group that had near-zero risk of getting and spreading COVID, no one to stand up for early childhood development (was a whole area of study when I was in credential program). Not one voice in Biden’s team did anything publicly to stop the madness imposed on our most vulnerable little citizens.

MikeR said...

I assume the answer is simple: They don't care what the parents want, and don't allow themselves to think about what the children need.

In the spirit of NYT, I’ll repeat this here- I recently sold my home in Boston and was chatting with the moving van driver when I mentioned the reason we were leaving was because my wife was tapping out after the riots. The driver said his father, who is a notable in Boston local, ah…’politics’, told him You ain’t going nowhere!. Racial disparities, indeed…

J L Oliver said...

I’ve been suspicious for some time that these mask policies benefit teachers by gagging students and quieting them. This piece increases that suspicion.

Another racial disparity- I’ve applied for a residential tax rate at my new home in South Carolina but what would seem to be a straightforward online application process has turned into a little legal war with our elected tax assessor. It seems she rejected our application because she doesn’t understand what an LLC is. She also claimed we disclosed we were taking a primary residence exemption on a property in another state, her ‘proof’ being a print out of our online application, which includes a question that isn’t on the online application at all. She’s currently fighting with our attorney who has told us she’s dug in for a fight.

I remember when one of the early big lessons we were supposed to take from COVID was how racist our medical system is because back people were disproportionately getting Covid. That was after a couple months of supresing covid stats because they didn’t want us to know the majority of Covid was hitting obese, older, and diabetic people. So they could keep everyone equally scared and shut in
To continue to mask children at this stage is child abuse. I want there to be a reckoning. They can’t keep doing this to people.

Great comment Also from Mike MJB Wolf

Unless you are wearing a medical-grade sterile mask and you sterilized your face and hands prior to donning it, and maintain the sterile integrity of the mask by not touching it, the mask does nothing to protect you. Every medical professional knows this. So, the only reason to mandate mask wear by anyone is to train people to obey futile and worthless government edicts. At best, masks somewhat protect other people from you, but then, you have to be infected for that to matter.

They don’t trust the government, and that distrust is well earned.

Both vaxing and masking kids is beyond stupid - it is child abuse. There no valid medical reasons to do either, and very good reasons to neither. Vaxing doesn’t keep them alive, but can kill them. Masking makes them sicker, while retarding their development.

Well, for some reason teachers hate to teach phonics. This mask thing gives them cover to do evil to children. I wonder if they are mindful of the evil they are doing to the children?

As a teacher in Oakland, Calif., Kareem Weaver helped struggling fourth- and fifth-grade kids learn to read by using a very structured, phonics-based reading curriculum called Open Court. It worked for the students, but not so much for the teachers. “For seven years in a row, Oakland was the fastest-gaining urban district in California for reading,” recalls Weaver. “And we hated it.”

The teachers felt like curriculum robots—and pushed back. “This seems dehumanizing, this is colonizing, this is the man telling us what to do,” says Weaver, describing their response to the approach. “So we fought tooth and nail as a teacher group to throw that out.” It was replaced in 2015 by a curriculum that emphasized rich literary experiences. “Those who wanted to fight for social justice, they figured that this new progressive way of teaching reading was the way,” he says.

I'm working this week in a large pharma company. They no longer require masks at all in the plant. Even in the manufacturing area, where I have direct exposure to the product in various states of manufacture, I am not required to wear a facemask. I gown up with booties, coveralls, gloves and hairnet. Because I have a mustache, I also have to wear a beard cover which is basically a hairnet for my face.

This is one of the top 5 companies and 90% of you have the product in your home.

I figure that they know what they are doing. I've spent a lot of time over the past 35 years in dozens of this companies plants. They are one of the strictest companies for preventing product contamination that I've seen.

I told my wife. She says "That's nice dear" and continues wearing a mask anytime she leaves the house.

Perhaps half the employees here still wear masks, even walking from their cars in the parking lot.

I never thought masks were at all helpful, even KN95 masks. I refused to wear one unless required. Glad this company has come to their senses.

gilbar: Now the people Least Likely to get covid, are STILL masked?

Remember, my mask protects you. Your mask protects me. If I'm an asymptomatic carrier, the breath I exhale could endanger you, and vice versa. The people least likely to show COVID SYMPTOMS (at least, distinct from all the symptoms of snotty noses and other bodily emissions that are always present and indistinguishable as COVID or allergies or other minor problems) are kids.

So we're making the kids wear masks to protect teachers. Classroom workers, anyway.

Because two years after the "two weeks to bend the curve" we have changed our mind and decided that classroom teachers ARE essential workers, just like grocery store checkers or truck drivers. Teachers can't just stay home and draw a paycheck for a third year. It's essential they come into work and deal with snotty-nosed children.

And those essential workers have lobbied -- successfully -- to have the snotty-nosed children masked. Because developing essential childhood skills is a lesser priority than sustaining essential employee's health.

Clear?

I did my day's skim of the front page of the NYT website before coming here and was struck by a headline or first sentence or whatever of one of the articles referring to "the pandemic" as if we are still in the midst of it.

Also, I tried to read an article about some 'safe space' controversy in Arizona but stopped after I was expected to begin negotiating thems and theirs and other propagandistic nonsense.
