"I waited until morning to listen to Biden's nighttime speech... I went out for my sunrise run and thought about what I'd heard. I'll tell you some more about that later."

I wrote that yesterday in a post I published at 9:58 a.m. — a post that combed through the text of the speech. It's now a day later and I haven't followed through, and I could just forget about. Would anyone remember? Is anyone thinking, yeah, what did she think about, while running and viewing the sunrise, about a speech she'd listened to but not yet read? It's highly unlikely, and "I'll tell you some more about that later" isn't even a promise.

We're having a big thunderstorm here at that moment:

I'm thinking of keeping my non-promise. I made notes to myself — audio notes — as I was watching the sunrise yesterday, and I've listened to the notes and can see there is something I wanted to say that I haven't said yet. Let me get something to eat and settle in and see if I can find a way to put it in writing without it seeming too... internal.
ADDED: This is a rewriting and an expansion of my audio notes to myself.
What stood out to me was the religion. Standing in front of a deep red glowing background, Biden spoke of the soul — a shared soul belonging to us all but from which some of us, by our own sins are excluded. He spoke of flames, and an image of a flaming heart came into my head. That's some kind of Christian iconography I would need to look up. I come from a long line of mainstream Protestants, not Catholic, but this is the image that came into my head and lodged there:

That flaming heart is the sacred heart of Jesus.
The Sacred Heart... is one of the most widely practised and well-known Catholic devotions, wherein the heart of Jesus is viewed as a symbol of "God's boundless and passionate love for mankind"... The Sacred Heart is often depicted in Christian art as a flaming heart shining with divine light, pierced by the lance-wound, encircled by the crown of thorns, surmounted by a cross, and bleeding. Sometimes, the image is shown shining within the bosom of Christ with his wounded hands pointing at the heart. The wounds and crown of thorns allude to the manner of Christ's passion, while the flames represent a furnace of ardent love.
Not used to the red flaming heart, I didn't experience the glowing redness and the talk of flames as anything like God's boundless,  passionate love. I thought of hell. Biden was demonizing people, but at the same time, he was calling us to the place he occupied — the political center, the mainstream — and there he was in what looked to me like metaphorical hell. Doesn't that make him the Devil, calling us to join him in Hell? Did anyone — did Catholics — experience him as a Christ figure, offering us his flaming heart, his boundless love?

I thought about how politically mainstream I am, and I wondered why I felt so disturbed by his call to everyone to join the mainstream. Do I hate myself, my own blandness, my equivocation and passivity? Why was I not... heartened by his depiction of the middle ground as the place where we can all come together and feel at peace, feel loved? My empathy went out to the extremists — the sinners — so many of them, nearly half of America, more than half if you infer that what he was saying implicated the extremists of the left. Let's not forget that Biden found his way into office because elite centrists needed to stop the extremists of the left — Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

"I am essence of mainstream," I said to myself in my little recording. "I want a mainstream President. I think mainstream politics is the best we're going to get." I read mainstream media. But when I hear mainstreamosity propounded as the one true religion politics, I recoil. He's drawing a line and excluding some people: Here, take my flaming heart or go to hell. It's too exclusionary! It's not democratic unless you define democracy to mean you must first enter the circle of people who believe the correct things and then you may participate.

In a country with an established religion, you get a religion that embodies the mainstream values that merge with government interests. Religion is used to keep most of the people in a cooperative, peaceful (supine?) position. That's not America. We have, at least theoretically, a separation of religion and government. People belong to mainstream and nonmainstream religions and to no religion at all. What keeps us from going wild? Some of those nonmainstream religious are exciting and passionate, just as some nonmainstream politics are exciting and passionate. What makes you so sure people should not be extreme in their religion or politics?

Obviously, most of us like cooperation and peace, but there's no way a President can simply call us into the mainstream. And it's inherently not mainstream to force us to be mainstream. In America, we have our rights to think and speak freely — including speaking lies and believing untruths. You can't control us. You can only debate us. Those are mainstream values. But with mainstream values like that, you can get some scary results. Are you sure you love democracy and freedom, Mr. Biden, or do you just use them to quiet opposition and produce a complacent citizenry that will accept what our betters in Washington decide needs to be done?

I'm curious. Maybe somebody here can answer my question. See, I have a MAGA Extremist neighbor who I'd like to turn in to the Biden Administration for disposal.

I know he's a MAGA Extremist because he didn't vote for Biden. He's an "election denier" because he quotes Hillary Clinton saying her election was stolen. He cheered when the Supreme Court returned the abortion question for the states to decide. He's "extremist" because he doesn't agree with "the majority" in the country. Likes to say he's a "rugged individualist" (obv code words and hate speech).

How do I turn this extremist in? He's a threat to our very democracy. A "clear and present danger to the United States of America" to quote our American president.

He needs to be droned by our President Biden. This is a "battle for the very soul of our nation," right? Well, here's the target. Where's the weapon? Where's the ammo? How do I get this guy on the enemies list?

I can't figure out which web page to report him on. Do I just call the FBI and poof, they murder him? How is this "threat to our Democracy" handled exactly? There's an election coming up and I'm afraid for our Democracy that he might actually not vote for the Biden hand-picked candidate he is so extreme. That's an "imminent threat."

How do I get Biden to kill this guy before he votes again?

I think you need to watch it, not just listen to audio or read it. The Red and Black, reminiscent of the Nazi Flag. The reminder of the enemy within, the reminder of the US version of the Reichstag fire, Jan 6th. On the 83rd anniversary of the invasion of Poland.
I think Biden's handlers hope to elicite some self fulfilling prophesy of insurrection. Let's be Hitler-ese to motivate some undemocratic response. Biden can't think 2 steps ahead but his handlers can.

In a sense that Trump was disconnected from the things Trump said, so is Biden.

Biden said that he thought I was some kind of threat to America. Some kind of semi-Nazi.

The next day he said that he'd never said that I was any kind of threat to America.

If I grant Biden the slack that I came to grant Trump, I have to accept that he was being sincere both times. Screwing up rhetorically for sure, but not deliberately lying about anything.

I believe that Biden's speechwriter wanted me characterized as a threat to America, and Biden read the speech sincerely, but without much comprehension. So he really didn't say that. His statement the next day was, in fact, "the real Biden".

Hillary blundered badly with her basket of "deplorables and irredeemables". With those remarks she abandoned any role as a uniter and in the process, abandoned the Dems' oldest and largest traditional constituency, the working and middle class. Trump capitalized on that, embracing those voters and making himself their champion.

Biden just made the same mistake times 100. He has publicly declared that he is either a total failure at what he set out to do as President or a fraud. He has discarded his moral authority like he would a dirty adult diaper.
Someone else will have that moral authority now. Trump will try to take it. So will every other candidate.

Who is advising Biden, anyway? His words and the imagery were so bad I almost wonder if they deliberately set the poor, old fool up to speed his exit.

They cannot allow us to run free, voting them out and stuff. That's a "clear and present danger" to "our Democracy" by which they mean "their Democracy." They won't be able to steal our tax dollars without Congressional votes and hand OUR money to THEIR supporters. That's a "clear and present danger" to their thieving operations.

Your country is being STOLEN from you and they want you to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Because the moment you DO anything, they can snatch you up and throw you into Epstein's jail cell where they will hang you.

You aren't anymore.

"Do I hate myself, my own blandness, my equivocation and passivity?"

No need to hate yourself, nor would you. But it's time to act on being disturbed, recognize reality, and choose sides.

"Let's not forget that Biden found his way into office because elite centrists needed to stop the extremists of the left — Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders."

Not quite. Dem progs calculated that Lizzie and Bernie couldn't win, and they knew coreless basement Joe could be presented as moderate anti-Trump--then be used to do the prog thing anyway.

"I am essence of mainstream," I said to myself in my little recording. "I want a mainstream President. I think mainstream politics is the best we're going to get."

It was always an illusion and an evasion. Self-ascribed mainstreamness is an attitude, not a set of policy preferences.

"And it's inherently not mainstream to force us to be mainstream."

Why not? Progs haven't won entirely yet, but the more proggy the mainstream, the more forcing makes sense.

"You can't control us. You can only debate us."

Nice sentiments. But that's all they are.

"Are you sure you love democracy and freedom, Mr. Biden, or do you just use them to quiet opposition and produce a complacent citizenry that will accept what our betters in Washington decide needs to be done?"

A very nice way of framing the question--but also a little late. Progs "just use" anything they damn well please, and love of high-minded things has nothing to do with it.

Your fiskings have been great. They come to terms with reality. The reality is that you cannot live and think and regard yourself as you used to. You, too, are deplorable.

Mr Wibble said...

You need the non-mainstream to push against the mainstream, or else the mainstream just becomes incestuous and corrupt. You need it to question every assumption and every promise made. This is the essence of Trump; he was a rejection by many voters of the mainstream political views which seemed unable to fulfill the promises of prosperity for all. The hysteria of the political class, I believe, was because they suspected that he was correct. It's also why he still has power, despite losing reelection. He was defeated, but he wasn't repudiated. If anything, recent events have proven Trump correct: the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, the bloody quagmire in Ukraine, Europe headed towards a winter without energy, China becoming increasingly bellicose, and the economic destruction and massive inflation here at home that is destroying savings and spiraling this country towards a major recession.

I can LOL only because I think there is still just enough of the rule-of-law remaining in American hearts and minds that this mad leftist revolution will be stopped by our laws and our elections under the laws. 2020 was not the rule for the future. But it is getting closer and closer and the war is heating up. Which is not necessarily what they want, but it is the only way they can get to what they want.

Thanks for following through, Ms Althouse, and I'm always grateful to follow your thoughts. We've heard many comparisons of the Biden speech to past tyrants, notably Hitler, and to a lesser extent, the CCP. I think that's off the mark. I've seen old color movies of Nazi Germany, and the vibrancy that is added when seeing them in early color Kodachrome, is impressive. The vast scale of the pageantry, the brown uniforms, the stark black, white, and red of the Nazi flags, the thousands of people - easy for the citizens to find a place to blend in anonymously and belong to the movement.

And that is the crux of our society's problem right now. Tyranny has become fashionable; censorship by the media industry at the direction of the state has taken on an air of big enterprise - and too many don't mind, and even applaud mindlessly. The imagery is beginning to make itself felt in examples like Biden's backdrop at the speech - the strong lines of Independence Hall, the bold deep red and blue colors, the silhouettes of the Marines, clearly armed soldiers, in the background. Symbols of Tyranny, in that dark, sanguinary context - and an invitation to anyone so-inclined to become another of the anonymous crusaders. That is the threat lurking in the shadows of Biden's speech. The seduction of the mob.

As a Latin-Tridentine-Mass-raised but very lapsed Roman Catholic, the imagery that jumps to my mind when one speaks of flames with a red background is Dante's Inferno, Hell, Hades, the Underworld, where the damned are tortured endlessly forever for the sins committed during their lives on earth. The Sacred Heart is about sacrifice and redemption. Nothing in Biden's speech covered those two topics, but he did strongly urge 75,000,000 US citizens to go to Hell. As it turned out, Biden couldn't win a fairly run election either, so we got mail-in-ballots inundating every single state with Democratic governors and Secretaries of State, and two Republican controlled states, Arizona and Georgia with all signature verfication tossed into the trashcan. ...about the aesthetics of the Nazis

No need to invest much time, I'll summarize it summarily.

Mostly dreck. In film, Nothing experimental or even vaguely expressionistic, just juvenile romance or mock-heroic fantasy. Our ongoing curse of Marvel Comics Universe toilet water would have been warmly endorsed by Herr Doktor Göbbels, Adolf's national artistic gauleiter.

In music, it was AWAT -- all Wagner, all the time, except when it was the other Richard, Richard Strauss. No Mendelssohn. And to even pick out a Hindemith chord on your own piano was to risk a midnight trip to Dachau. If there had been such a thing as Hitler's homies, their Opels and DKWs would have thrummed and buzzed to the Valkyrie leitmotif. Hojotoho! dawg.

The plastic arts were the unique preserve of Der Fuhrer, himself, so Göbbels left that field strictly alone. Writing autobiographical novels of tormented youth gave him no competence among painters and sculptors. On canvas, it was usually homely peasants doing homely things, like honing a scythe before the harvest or breastfeeding kleiner Heinrich, though there were many loving portraits of German soldiers with sleeves rolled up and grenades poised to throw.

Nazi sculpture was really bizarre and revealing in a Freudian sort of way, lots of nekkid dudes with absurdly sinewy physiques wielding swords and wearing expressions of psychotic rage. It was homoeroticism for homicidal maniacs. (If Hitler had marched in one of last June's revolting "pride" parades, he'd have been one of those wearing leather straps and buckles -- and nothing else -- meanwhile Biden gets his first stiffie in thirty years.) There were a few nekkid female subjects, but these tended to be strangely rectangular, static, and vegetatively passive in expression. Ernst Röhm thoroughly approved.

For someone who fancied himself an architect, Hitler gave that field to the supervision of Albert Speer, whose designs were relentlessly straight up and down -- not exactly fertile, but positively verdant in comparison to the pre-Nazi Bauhaus shipping containers we have to live and work in even today, which only goes to affirm the old ill wind adage.

And speaking of Abert Speer, last night's Nuremberg Rally in Philadelphia looks remarkably like a Speer staging, especially the low camera angle designed to make the "Leader" look more imposing and absolute. And the cornice above Independence Hall's main entrance -- they look just like the spread wings of the Nazi Parteiadler. Biden ought to be impeached just for the fascist imagery he imposed on one of our sacred monuments. We'll never be rid of the memory of that demonic desecration. We'll be forced to dynamite the whole structure like we did to Speer's Party Rally reviewing stand in 1945. A noose is too good for him.

@Althouse: I wondered why I felt so disturbed by his call to everyone to join the mainstream.

Maybe because Biden's handlers have forced you to recognize that joining the so-called mainstream means viewing roughly 50 percent of the US voting population as "semi-fascists" who are "a clear and present danger to the United [sic] States of America." How does that feel? Disturbing?

The surest way to lose my vote is to present your politics as a matter of spirituality and soulfulness.

Biden of course has no core beliefs of any kind, except in his own rectitude and good intentions.

Also, Joementia pissed that those not to his lilking are getting involved with the election process.
I hope a couple plumbers are in there to quell those overflowing toilets halting counts across multiple swing states. Maybe even allow observers close enough so that binoculars aren't necessary.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is about suffering willingly carried. Imposed suffering is devilish.

To answer your question, nothing about black and red backgrounds makes me, a Catholic, think of the Sacred Heart. Neither does fire and brimstone. The Sacred Heart glows with beams of light because Jesus wants to persuade us to follow. Beckon to us with beauty, reason, and gentleness. Biden's speech setting doesn't remind me of those three words.

Because the last thing they want is people thinking for themselves. They NEED the pliant sympathetic usual suspects. You question their narrative. That makes you dangerous.

Its astounding that some people thought Trump as POTUS was CrazytownUSA. But Biden is a normal "Centrist". Biden has said/done so many bizarre insane things: Loony Speeches, clowish actions, and extreme leftwing policies. All with a large dose of semi-fascist repression.

But then why did anyone think nominating and electing this senile 80 y/o was a good idea?

My parents spent my whole adolescence reaffirming one idea: you have to think for yourself. Stand porter at the door of thought. Don't let other people take over your thoughts. Know whta you think and why you think it.

Biden in his own shambling, cheesey, cheap, stupid way spent an hour standing at the front door of Hell telling me to stop thinking for myself.

I am not going to do it.

Ann, I too am from a long line of mainstream Protestants (going back >400 years now), and wondered the same. For about 25 years now, I have been with RC women. And besides obeying, to some extent, the Pope, what bothers me the most about Roman Catholicism is it’s emphasis on the death and sacrifice of Jesus, versus emphasis on his Resurrection. For us mainstream Protestants, Jesus had to go through his Crucification to get to his Resurrection. And that focus on his death brings in a lot of bloody images. This seems even more so in the Hispanic portions of the country where I have spent much of that 25 years (their bloody Catholicism may have roots in their past of human sacrifice, before their conversion to Christianity - note the similarity between the imagery of their priests cutting out beating hearts, and the images in your post). It is sometimes a surprise when I realize that my GFs, my English and Irish Roman Catholic friends, etc, aren’t really that way.

Biden, of course, was raised Roman Catholic, and claims (despite his stand on abortion, etc) to still be a believing Roman Catholic to this day. That could be behind his red and black imagery. It could be how he thinks of his fight against evil. But I see him coming from a much less bloody Catholic tradition, closer to Protestantism. Still, the constituency probably most in play these last couple years are the Hispanics, and this may have been aimed at bringing them back into the fold (of the Democratic Party) by portraying the fight as good versus evil, and using symbolism that they are maybe more likely to respond to. This may also play into the image by Dante of Hell mentioned above.

I don’t think though that is how it went down, and that is because of the overlap with Nazi propaganda. Especially concerning were the juxtaposition of Biden and Hitler in a couple images, in the way they clench their fists, etc. We have, maybe had our Reichstag fire in the J6 persecutions. Just as with the Nazis, it very much looks like a put up job. They have their Brown Shirts, but with their Marxist roots, they wear black instead of brown. They though serve the same function - as their shock troops, beating up their political opponents.

Ann,

I see you can watch the whole thing on YouTube, so I'm going to put up an new post and embed it. I've seen this movie 3 or 4 times. It's endlessly interesting — about the aesthetics of the Nazis.

Does Albert Speer's inkwell get a look in? George Will once (40 years ago or so) wrote a column on that. Apparently it was a vast concatenation of eagles and assorted other heraldic foofaraw, in the middle of which there was a tiny puddle of ink. The splendor utterly overwhelmed the actual function.

Am surprised Althouse didn't first think of Stendhal.

That evening I only saw photographs afterward, on Twitter. This Catholic thought, Mr Biden imitating Hitler in Hell.

The day after, I was 'open' (as the expression goes) to the possibility that the photographs I'd seen were 'shopped or whatever by anti-Bidenites until someone helpfully pointed out the BBC's report of the event.

"I thought about how politically mainstream I am, and I wondered why I felt so disturbed by his call to everyone to join the mainstream."

Joe Biden's mainstream consists of people who are OK with his using the FBI and the DOJ to persecute his political opponents. Joe Biden accuses his opponents of failure to respect the Constitution, while he presides over a Gulag where the right to speedy trial has been denied for years to people accused of misdemeanors. Joe Boden's Gauleiter Garland is trying to steel his faltering nerve to haul Trump out of Mar-a-Lago in chains. You had better join Joe's mainstream, whether or not you feel disturbed. Bad things happen to people who don't join Joe Biden's mainstream. How bad? Wait and see.

You are not mainstream, Althouse. You want "politics" to be less polarized and divided, and you would prefer thar we all get along.

But you are a thinker and you are interested in ideas, and you are interested in following them where they lead.

To be "mainstream" is to believe that we all think the same way, and that what is accepted by the "mainstream" is what is correct. It is the end of thinking. You don't believe that, and I don't believe that, and i don't think that any of your readers and commenters, including the lefty troll types, believe that.

So you are a radical.

You are not yet a "clear and present danger," as I am. But it may be just a matter of time. Or a change in the political expediency of the regime in power.

The most holy day in the Catholic calendar is Easter. What happened on Easter?

Yes, the Vatican did allow incorporation of tribal customs into religious practice in colonial times.

I’m a little offended that the Sacred Heart is what comes to mind- I’ve such a love of it. Alma mater and local parish… Sacred Heart. It’s an identity, in my blood. It’s my Faith.

Biden’s staging is the antithesis of the Sacred Heart.
No qualms. Ifs. Ands. Or, buts…

Here’s a little Catholic prayer we should all adopt in these open warfare times:
St Micheal the Archangel- defend us in the day of battle…
