Leaders of the Republican-controlled legislature say that when they passed the law allowing 5 mg THC per gummy they didn't realize the law allowed 5 mg THC per gummy. A large (250-300-lb) man and a woman cut the security cable of a phone and just waltzed out of the store. The phone was located opposite the doors. They then walked briskly to their car, located not 25-ft away from the doors, and drove off. The phone security device was trilling loudly, but none of the store personnel looked up or did anything. I was close by, walked out just behind them, but there was no way I was going to tackle a 300-lb., 6-ft, 4-in man, especially since no T-Mobile employee seemed to care.; 7/1/22, 8:50 PM

Oh right. "Liberal World Order" lacks appeal and accuracy. It's Neoliberal World Order for one thing--none of the good things that "liberal" once stood for are included in the scheme.

Clyde said...: I'm a big fan of the late Warren Zevon (17 CDs in my collection), and the other day, I was listening to my weekly Amazon Music Discovery Mix and heard a song of his that I hadn't heard before. Turns out that it was from a 2020 album release of a concert in New Jersey back in 1982. I went and listened to the whole thing and was delighted by this version of "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" that turns into Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch" about 1:40 in. Even better, the concert footage of the song is on YouTube! Enjoy!

Lurker21 said...: I have the third season of Succession. I liked the first two seasons, but now it just seems boring and repetitive.
Billions, a similar but lesser show, has more staying power. The devious, scheming characters have much in common, but they do seem more well-rounded, and less overwhelmingly negatively drawn. It's possible to take more of an interest in their made-up adventures, because we aren't expected to simply despise them. Veep, not an entirely different show, was also more enjoyable. It's the difference between comedy and satire (or something even more scathing and sarcastic than satire). Maybe the show will pick up in later episodes.

I can recommend the documentary Truman and Tennessee, An Intimate Conversation. It reminded me of the days when novelists and playwrights were guests on talk shows and David Frost asked questions that his guests really had to think about in order to answer. The film went more deeply than most into where writing comes from, what makes someone an author, what the writing life is like, and what the long downward arc of a writer's career feels like. If I have to make a criticism, it's that the Capote quotes that Truman didn't read himself were read by The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons. I've gotten used over the years to Truman Capote's voice, but Jim Parson's Capote makes me want to tear my ears off.; 7/1/22, 10:01 PM

But Putin's war isn't the primary reason gas prices went up -- that has more to do with Biden's war on oil production -- and if one war shatters the "liberal world order" it was a pretty flimsy thing to begin with.

This makes people think that the "liberal world order" is a synonym for the Great Reset, the sweeping transformation of the world that Klaus Schwab advocates, or perhaps for American world hegemony. For all I know, maybe it is.

In any case, it isn't a very catchy or appealing phrase. No zing or punch or whatever. And you can't fill your gas tank or your kids' bellies with it. There's a "let them eat cake" sound to Deece's comment.; 7/1/22, 10:11 PM

'Smells like a twofer, a First Amendment violation tucked inside a Second Amendment violation.

New York is scrambling to pass new concealed-carry laws because of the Bruen case, of course, which nuked the state’s “may issue” permit system. In a “shall issue” system, which most states have, you’re entitled to a permit so long as you meet certain basic objective criteria — U.S. citizen, no criminal record, gun-safety training, etc. In a “may issue” system, even if you check all of those boxes, the state might still refuse to issue the permit because, in its infinite wisdom, it’s decided that you don’t need one.

“Need” is no longer part of the equation, thanks to Bruen. It’s not up to the government to decide whether you need to exercise your right to bear arms, Clarence Thomas wrote for the Court. It’s up to you. It’s a poor “right” that depends on the state’s permission for its use.

So Bruen limits state discretion in deciding who gets a concealed carry permit. Rather than switch to a clean “shall issue” system, though, the New York state legislature is reportedly trying to smuggle a massive degree of discretion back into the permitting process by authorizing state agents to make a judgment call based on … the applicant’s social media accounts. Do you have “the essential character, temperament and judgement necessary to be entrusted with a weapon”? New York officials are going to scroll through your Facebook page and decide.'

'...The “character” nonsense sounds vague and arbitrary to me at first glance, which means it has a First Amendment problem. And since it’s being enlisted to re-assert state discretion over concealed carry permits, it probably has a Second Amendment problem too.

Among the requirements: Applicants would have to show they have “the essential character, temperament and judgement necessary to be entrusted with a weapon and to use it only in a manner that does not endanger oneself and others,” according to the bill.

And as part of that assessment of good character, the bill says, the applicant has to turn over a list of any social media accounts they have had in the past three years “to confirm the information regarding the applicant’s character and conduct.”

Applicants would also have to provide four character references, take 16 hours of firearms safety training plus two hours of practice at a range, undergo periodic background checks and turn over the contact information of their spouse, domestic partner or any other adults living in their household.

“This is the kind of bill that the Gestapo would be proud of,” said one New York gun-rights advocate. Well, I think the Gestapo would prefer a bill that banned civilian gun ownership entirely. But point taken.

It sounds like New York is trying to build a sort of half-assed red-flag framework onto the front end of the permitting system, denying people a right to carry from the start instead of taking away their right later if a “red flag” emerges. But a true red-flag law requires much more than questionable character: Typically the state needs evidence from cops, family members, or psychologists that the defendant is a threat to himself or others. And that evidence usually requires more than poor “judgment” on a social media account, unless the defendant is posting things like “I’m shooting up a school tomorrow.”

Declaring the new person's past dead (dead-naming) might work in a cinematographic world of imagination. And even then, movies have flashbacks to help viewers understand.

I'll bet that the store employees were told not to play hero but there had to be lots of mall security video of the robbery for police considering that this went down in a 692,000 sf mall with upwards of 110 tenants.; 7/2/22, 12:16 AM

These will include barring "carrying handguns on public transportation, in places of worship, and at polling places, schools, government buildings, health, and medical facilities, and 'places where children gather' such as daycare centers, parks, zoos, and playgrounds."

I would also expect that gun-carry in privately-owned facilities such as malls, amusement parks, and Donald Trump's golf courses can be controlled by the owners.; 7/2/22, 12:40 AM
