I sometimes wonder to what degree people think they are boring. I am interested in that question because, apart from criminals and people who are nasty, I have never met anyone who is not more interesting than I can imagine.

But lots of decent people have told me, when they thought nobody was listening, that they thought they were boring, and I always wanted to say ---- criminals are boring, nasty people are boring, but you are not a criminal and you are not a nasty person ----- but usually I just gently disagreed with them... Oh well, it is sort of a big deal, as most of you know, to have had many friends in this world.

Entering my usual Kroger about 1pm today, I found myself blocking the exit of a young woman with a large handbag, who was being pursued by a Kroger employee demanding that she give up some shoplifted items.

Turns out there was a pair of the hussies, and her partner was being blocked in by another customer, a woman with a cart, and likewise pursued by an employee. As they tussled, and the gals shouted their innocence and "Get your hands off me!" (as far as I could see the guys never touched the shoplifters, but did have hold of their bags) the items came out one by one: hand lotion, hair conditioner, laundry and dishwasher pods, with the vow that that was the last one . . .

A few more plastic bottles are pulled out by the employees, or thrown by the perps onto the parking lot with enough force to burst, and the larger and more feisty of the women is shouting at her persistent pursuer, "I'm not afraid of you!" while he retains his firm grip on her handbag strap and gets in front of her.

The big guy was cool, and replied, "I don't want you to be afraid of me, I want you to give all the stuff back."

The whole thing transpired in just a few moments, and enough other Kroger staff had rushed out that I took a last look and headed inside. It didn't look like the gals were going to get anything more than a warning not to come back.

I thought the employees were pretty professional, and said so inside when I was asked about the commotion.

Our windows have still not arrived. They were supposed to arrive on May 3rd. Then we were told that they'd be delivered last Friday, May 13. That must have been an unlucky day, so the window company changed the delivery date to today, May 13. Now they say some time this week. I expect another delivery date change.

I feel like the Flying Dutchman, cursed to try to round Cape Horn forever, unless he can find the love of a woman. Our windows will always scheduled for delivery at a future date, date subject to change at the last minute. I have the love of a good woman, Ms. Snoqualmie, so that part of the curse isn't active.

Biden's new press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, attempts to answer Peter Doocy's direct question about increased taxes as a remedy for inflation and fails utterly.

There's one advantage to having Miss Jean-Pierre in that position. (What a fake-sound name; it would even embarrass a porn actress.) Listening to her idiotic replies is more like listening to the Head Idiot himself.

After two years of delays, we are finally going on our Alaska trip. I am sure in the end I'll be happy we went, but...our booked flights have changed at least four times, and were canceled again Saturday. They finally got rescheduled today. It is less than ideal routing. We have to disembark in Canada because of the antiquated Jone's Act that should have been struck down decades ago. So we get to do Canada's lovely ArriveCAN app. We have to get COVID tested I don't know how many times, at additional costs, of course. It is all just such BS. I was souring on Canada the past few years and this is putting a bow on it. My ancestors came to Canada in the 1600's and I always took pride in that and wanted to visit the places they first settled. Not anymore. I tried donating to the Trucker's Freedom Convoy two times. I wonder if I'm on a RCMP list. Between that and COVID, I got the Platinum Level Travel Insurance-just in case.

I had a family member in the jewelry business who attended a major shopping mall's security seminar. The security officers mentioned that the loss to a business due to "shrinkage" was %20. "Shrinkage" is loss of inventory through employee theft and shoplifting. That was over a decade ago. Certainly higher today.

Tina Trent said...

Narr, when I was a Kroger employee, we were not permitted to confront shoplifters and discouraged from even alerting our managers.

Unless these were security personnel, they will likely be sent for retraining or fired. Our manager was transferred oddly soon after stopping two shoplifters brazenly filling bags with baby formula, likely to sell at the big flea market nearby.

Every woman including illegals too poor to buy formula gets WIC to buy it, so people shoplifting it aren't stealing food for their babies: they're stealing an expensive and compact commodity to launder it into cash. It gets bought in bulk and sent to Mexico for resale. Many cities and states also "match" the price for food sold at designated "food desert" (ie. b.s.) urban farmer's markets, doubling the value of the food stamps with our money, so that's a popular way to strangle the taxpayers too. I would go back to that store and politely tell management again that you hope the employees received only positive consequences for their actions.

We watched Berkeley Square the other night. Leslie Howard in a 1933 time-travel movie. We needed something that could hold our interest and have as little to do with today's news as possible. Leslie Howard character crosses back from 20th century to 18th. Not a perfect movie, but a very good one as evidenced by five or six remakes in Hollywood and TV in the decades after. I wonder how it hit audiences at the time, for whom it must have been much more of a novelty.

Are there other good time-travel movies? Other than the H.G. Wells Time Machine? One I can think of is Peggy Sue Got Married, also haunting in its way (and a wonderful Kathleen Turner performance). The device was used on a lot of TV shows, but I had trouble thinking of many movies that made it work well. There is probably a Michael J. Fox movie, IIRC, but I have trouble imagining that combination being haunting.

Berkeley Square, I discovered, was made from an unfinished but nonetheless posthumously published Henry James novel. That helped; well worth its running time.

I could have done a search. Imdb has a list of 100 Time Travel movies. A lot of primarily sci-fi-fi, looks like. Though it says Top 100, there seem to be only 85 of them. Peggy Sue is on there, Berkeley Square seems to be an omission. Midnight in Paris a recent one I had forgotten.

Speaking of time travel, how about that Ben Bernanke showing up to criticize the current Federal Reserve for being too slow to have begun raising rates against the inflation? What noive! Hope Jay Powell punches him in the kisser. A good brawl between Fed chairman is overdue.

PS to Bernanke -- your policies created the greatest inflation ever seen in financial asset prices. The nation now faces withdrawal from your mad excesses. It is not a pleasant prospect, to say the least.

@Narr
I have been in our local Kroger and have seen shoppers go through the self check out, bag items and walk out without paying. When I pointed it out to the staff they said “yeah, happens a lot”.

Narr- regarding the shoplifting incident - there are some cities where people know they can take whatever they want and engage in just about any behavior without consequence. In other places, mine included (for now), there is the general peace that comes with good law enforcement and a generally respectable populace. A friend who is a police commander in a nearby suburb remarked that "We only have 300 sworn police officers. If a large percentage of the people in this city decide not to obey the law anymore, there's not much we can do about it."

Pheasant tails. I think. Edible but not very flavorful.

There are plenty of time travel movies out there. Whether they're good is hard to say. Most of them nowadays don't have the historical angle, though.

Goodnight, Sweetheart was a 1990s British TV series about a man who discovers that by walking down a certain London street, he can go back to the Second World War years. A very goofy, very British idea, but the show was kind of endearing, maybe because of its goofy Britishness.

Predestination, based on a Robert Heinlein story, isn't historic, but really gets into the strange paradoxes of time travel. It's an interesting puzzle that one might want to rewatch until one understands it.

@Kai Akker— I enjoyed Berkeley Square as well. Brigadoon is a good time travel movie to add to your list. And Time Bandits…i wonder if that one survives the test of time. Probably 30 years since I’ve seen it.

My Husband, who has worked as a Pharmaceutical Salesman for years asked me what "she/her" meant after somebody's name in an E-mail. I had to explain to him those were her "pronouns". He looked at me...rolled his eyes, and said, WTF?? Like I really need to know that? Who Cares??

Then I tried to explain when they identify as they, them. He just shook his head, said "we're doomed" and walked away.

Upside down world indeed.

I just encountered them there and left them where I found them. I used the tag "mushrooms" because that's a tag I have, but they look like they came from a tree or log, so they're probably more properly called "fungal conks."

I don't think that's something to eat. Consult experts.

I don't know if the two Kroger guys were security or just regular smurfs who had enough. Either way, there was no sympathy for the sticky-fingered duo as they huffed and cursed on their way. (All the main participants were B/black FWIW.)

Not sure I'll contact the management directly--I know that a lot of people heard what I said when I was asked about it.

12 Monkeys is a good TT movie. I'm glad someone mentioned the Heinlein, which I must have read at some point but forgot the title of. IIRC one point made is that if TT is possible, then logically and by necessity it has already taken place--and we are unable to perceive it.

Time Bandits was one of the less-successful MP ventures IMO.

Outlander, of course, is the TT tale of our age.

I time-travel in history books.

Thank you Caroline and Lurker21 on the time-travel productions; I have taken them down.

I will add one more -- Portrait of Jennie, which has a time element and is a haunting Jennifer Jones picture from 1948. You also get Lillian Gish and Ethel Barrymore in there. The '40s were the true Golden Era in Hollywood, just before deregulation and TV put a fatal beating on the studio system. I liked this picture and I think it would appeal to any classic Hollywood lover. Won the Special Effects Oscar and nominated for Cinematography. Joseph Cotten co-stars.

Several weeks ago Althouse gave us a clip from Pig. Put it in my Netflix queue. I'm still old school, rocking the DVDs. The kids laugh at me.

Saw it the other day. Really good. That scene is the highlight of the movie. One of Cage's most powerful performances, ever.

The other actor in the scene (the fraudulent chef) was really key for that scene to work. The look on his face. I don't know who that actor was, but that was very well done. A little tiny scene for him (Cage is in the whole movie), but it's such a key scene and he pulls it off.

The Michael J. Fox movie was Back to the Future, which wasn't bad. There was a sequel where they went forward in time, but I'm not sure I ever saw it.

There was also the Ah-nold movie and another recent one, but I doubt they're the sort of thing you're looking for a la Berkeley Square. Ditto Twelve Monkeys.

Have any time travel writers given thought to the fact that a traveler would have to arrive at the precise coordinates on Earth relative to the Sun on a given date? The potential for emerging somewhere in space or, worse yet, inside Earth's mantle, would be pretty much terminal in a DeLorean or H.G. Wells style machine.
