"The Pope has criticised 'cancel culture,' claiming it suffocates freedom of expression, rewrites the past and eliminates 'all sense of identity.'"

"In a strongly worded speech yesterday to diplomats gathered at the Vatican, the Pope said 'a kind of one-track thinking is taking shape, one constrained to deny history or, worse yet, to rewrite it.'... The Pope said the trend was influencing diplomacy, creating 'a mindset that rejects the natural foundations of humanity and the cultural roots that constitute the identity of many peoples.' The result, he said, was 'a form of ideological colonisation, one that leaves no room for freedom of expression and is now taking the form of the "cancel culture" invading many circles and public institutions.'... 'Under the guise of defending diversity, it ends up cancelling all sense of identity, with the risk of silencing positions that defend a respectful and balanced understanding of various sensibilities.'"

The Pope's words are translated from the Italian, but he said "cancel culture" in English.

Doesn't the Pope have to oppose cancel culture? Whether he says so outright or not, he must defend the Catholic Church, and the Catholic Church is a very conspicuous target of the culture.

Here's the full text of the speech.

ADDED: I'd trust the Pope when he identifies "ideological colonization." It takes one to know one!

ICWYDT, Francis. Nifty move.

"eliminates 'all sense of identity.'""

Well, not all. Still, another good move.

I hear he is about to form a grand alliance with the Protestants, Orthodox, Jews, Sunni Muslims, and Shia Muslims. Survival for all is at stake. Pope Francis might be the first Christian permitted inside of Mecca. Eventually they might even bring in the Buddhists, Hindus, and Taoists. Animists are shit out luck though... from what I hear.

Back in the 80s, TNR editor Michael Kinsley found what he thought was the most boring headline in world history: “Worthwhile Canadian Initiative.” He asked readers to top it with submissions of their own.

Past experience with this Pope does not support the position that he feels he must defend the Church. But whattayaknow? Twice in...what...a few days? The Pope says something that makes sense. Institutional capture, I suppose.

For the same reasons, wouldn't Biden have to oppose cancel culture?

Honestly, I don't know what Francis's game is. Sometimes he sounds like a woke leftist. Other times he sounds like a family values conservative (as with his recent comments on having children). I'm not sure there's any rhyme or reason to his pontifications. What exactly is his modus operandi?

Just to clarify: my comment about Biden is not based on his alleged Catholic faith.

I used to accuse the left of rejecting the Enlightenment, until they agreed and declared the Enlightenment white supremacy. It will be tougher for them to wave away the point that Woke is colonialism.

Maybe the Pope is Catholic after all. If so, he has morphed from Jesuit Fascist to Catholic. Good news if so.

Before I see what others think--

From the excerpt, good. I'm an atheist, but am happy to make common cause with anyone who appreciates the past accomplishments of Western Civilization and works to preserve them.

I'd pushback a little on his idea that rewriting history is worse than denying it. Rewriting history ("re-vision") is what history is all about; the greater danger to me is the mass of people decoupled from any sense of the past whatever, other than an urge to smash any traces of it.

As seen on TV.

Be nice if he explained more, and this got some traction. But he’s been firmly socialist for a long time and went oddly quiet during the whole Covid shutdown. Should’ve kept all the churches open and told the governments to pound salt.

But “even a blind squirrel” as they say…

The “cancel culture” is contrary to the church precisely because its Old Testament. You said something once 20 years ago? You’re kicked out of the tribe… ostracized… a moral leper. The only way you can come back to town is if you “announce” yourself by repeatedly Shouting “Unclean! Unclean!” As you walk through …

No thanks. New Testament is all about repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation. Nice if more practiced it.

I'm sure the Left, which praises the Pope for every Pro-left position he takes, will now look into their hearts and rethink Cancel culture.

Yes, I'm sure of it.

I'm not Catholic, so maybe I'm getting it wrong. And is Pope Francis talking more about current political issues than previous Pope's - or it just my imagination?

Well, Jesus was canceled.

If notable people wanted to end this cancellation contagion/revival, they would find ways to challenge the orthodoxy into irrelevance. It could be done. They just have to overcome the fear, like in senator McCarthy’s time.

Here’s an idea. Take an instagram with a cancelled person. That should be way easier than pouring a bucket of cold water on yourself.

What's emanating from your penumbra said...

Forget the Pope. Most reasonable and humble people realize that cancel culture is unhealthy for society. Unless you are a know-it-all or simply bad at introspection, you probably understand that it's important to have feedback, especially in the form of opinions that differ from yours and from the twitter mob's. And you don't know; the opposing opinions could be correct! (Leftists used to understand this...)

It's unfortunate that currently there is little accountability for cancelling or attempting to silence others. When the cancelled viewpoint turns out to have some value (especially when it's true, but even if it's not!), those who participated in the canceling should suffer severe negative consequences.

But too many leftists are a dangerous combination of utopia-seeker, narcissist and statist, so they will never give up their coercive activities without, shall we say, encouragement.

The beauty of the Catholic Church is its catholicity, universality, ability to hold lots of disparate cultures together under one umbrella of faith. Also the warm humanism of classic Catholic thought. I see humanism and catholicity in Pope Francis’s comments here.

One of the very first examples of cancel culture in Western societies was the Spanish Inquisition. The Catholic Church went to considerable lengths to ensure that all the people of Spain thought the right thoughts about the right things in the right way. When you got cancelled by the Spanish Inquisition, you were well and truly cancelled. What could possibly be worse than the Spanish Inquisition?....Well, consider this: One of Napoleon's stated reasons for invading Spain was to abolish the Spanish Inquisition. Excellent. Napoleon was on the right side of many progressive ideas. Not so much slavery or women's rights, but he was definitely in favor of eliminating clerical privilege and abolishing the Inquisition. Here's the problem though. The Spanish people liked the Inquisition. It was one of their hallowed institutions. They were willing to fight and die to defend it.....It should be noted that over several centuries the Spanish Inquisition had only killed about five thousand people and occurrences and methods of torture were limited. On the other hand, the French occupation of Spain caused about 10 to 12 per cent of the population there to die in their struggle against that occupation. (Bit rich for the Spanish to protest against foreign occupation, but that's the way it went.) Incidents of torture were extravagant and common. It wasn't just enough to nail partisans or opposing soldiers against the barn door, they were also gelded and disemboweled before crucifying. All in all, Napoleon and the progressive ideas of the French Revolution gouged the Spanish soul more painfully and extensively than the Spanish Inquisition.....So there you have it. The Church was on the side of cancel culture and the people who were against the Church's excesses were also on the side of cancel culture, only more so. The way in which you disagree with someone is more important than the issues on which you disagree.

“Today's Catholic faith is not the one I grew up in.

It’s still the same. It’s a relationship- not a forced marriage and it relies on faithfulness and truth. How any individual interacts w/God w/in the doctrine, the dogma of the Church is private and not a shotgun commitment. Yet- be honest. If the requirements of monogamy to a loving God can’t be met, then strive to complete the union. Don’t lie or hide behind excuses.

Educate yourself! ( that’s a line in a movie somewhere) As far as I’m concerned, if one wants to be a Catholic- one should care and if one wants to be a Catholic and doesn’t care— like so many in our ruling class (or Christmas/Easter followers)- then quit pretending.

Francis is who he is. Not necessarily my cup of tea, but he is Pope.
I still wonder how much of his message is intentionally mutilated by the media or even from w/in the Church herself. I know there are those w/in who want to drastically weaken the Church.

The evil one will not be happy until all of humanity is crawling around on our bellies in the dirt- like him…

As usual, William makes an excellent point; to pile irony on irony, it was Napoleon's invasion of Spain that weakened Spanish authority and strength in the New World to the extent that people in their long-mismanaged and oppressed colonies--the graveyard of the vastest number of enslaved people from Africa known to history--were able to begin thinking and acting on their own.

The Inquisition, of course, existed in other places than Spain, and with less excuse, but let's count all the bodies, not just a few. It's reaching back a ways, but one of the things that went along with Phillip II's armada in 1588 was a plan and some personnel for instituting an Inquisition in Britain.

And what system did the newly independent and ambitious countries of Spanish American choose to emulate? That of the French Revolution and Republicanism.

History lurches and crashes, and people snatch what they can from the rubble.

Tina Trent said...

Why would Unitarian ministers seek to be Catholic priests? They certainly do a pretty good job of binging and purging academic theological institutions, murdering mystery with ideology and faith with litmus tests until they're the last inclusive standing.

I don't think most of them know the harm they are inflicting on civilization itself, but some do. Viz Howard's baiting, perhaps Catholicism is muting that core authoritarian anti-humanism in this Pope, but I wouldn't put him in the naif pile.
