"As someone who personally helped resettle over 30 Afghan SIV families in 2017, here is what the local residents can expect. First, the fathers all speak English..."

"... and most have a college degree. They either worked with US soldiers on the battlefield and working with local villagers. Some worked on US AID programs or helped staff the US embassy. Many are engineers or accountants. They usually have several young children and a wife who does not speak English (some exceptions to that). They need affordable housing, jobs and a low cost used car (so that they can work as delivery men). The wives want to learn English quickly so an ESL program is important. The young children will learn English within a few months just by being in a classroom setting. Access to healthcare is also important (they all receive Medicaid cards)."

That a comment at "Wisconsin towns await influx of Afghans — and wonder what it will mean" (WaPo)(reporting on "thousands" of Afghan refugees arriving at the Fort McCoy Army base near Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin).

It's not the highest-rated comment. The highest-rated comment is: "Well, I don't imagine they'll attack the U.S. Capitol, so they'll certainly make better citizens than Republicans." That's nastily partisan and poorly written. There's unintended ambiguity, suggesting that the refugees will not make good Republicans. I presume the commenter meant to assert that Republicans don't make good citizens.

Remember the game show "Who Do You Trust"? I'd reckon the betrayal of the troops and their associates in Afghanistan is going to play out much differently than that commenter assumes.

Sadly, it’s not a surprise that the decent, thoughtful, informed comment is losing out to the nasty, partisan shitpost. It is the WaPo, after all. Like the NYT, this former news outlet is little more than a hate-click bucket shop.

In other news, thank you for highlighting that comment. I've heard nothing but bad stories about Afghan refugees and that commenter makes a valuable point that the ones we’re likely to take on in the US will be educated and Western-oriented.

Working with liberals in social work, psychology, and mental health law for forty years, this is exactly the sort of smirking cynical remark that would get a laugh at the lunch table. not all of them would ever make such a statement, of course, and some might even push back on it a little - though with a giggle. I know liberals at church who are much nicer. But this is what i was used to when liberals thought only their own were present.

Good. Now give us the CV of those who come in posing as SIV families. And if you don't think there will be hundreds (thousands?) of those, you haven't been paying attention to our government at work. There is virtually nothing doled out to me by our government spokespeople or their paid assistants at WaPo or the NYT that I can take on face value. More digging will be needed.

Beside, we already have a large track record of Afghan immigrants and their behavior in Europe and EU nations are no longer so ready to take in anymore (because their citizens have had it). So- yes, new engineers and loving families are fine and always welcome. But given what we know about the track record of mass Afghan immigration into the EU, I would not take WaPo's word on any of this.

The comment reveals how this person thinks. Certainty derives from things imagined.

Personally, I resent "Republicans" being given the credit for the Capital riot.

I taught JOJ (just off the jet) refugees and immigrants for decades. The kids will be fine. The adults are coming from a deeply patriarchial and conservative culture manifesting itself in mothers who will not speak at parent teacher conferences and defer to their husbands in all things. When they find their feet they tend to be very conservative in their cultural cues. By way of example abortion clinics will appall them. The majority of American children born without fathers in the home bewilders them and not in a good way. The Muslim faith from Bosnian refugees in the 1990's to Iraqi refugees in the 2000's to the Afghan refugees in the 2020's are a culturally conservative group of disparate peoples who will do better economically than many already here Americans. They understand their good luck.
So this will be the first group of JoJs I've missed teaching Civics due to retirement from school teaching eight years ago. Interesting to view it from the sidelines...

The WaPo story as to SIV Afghans is probably true. But the issue is about the unvetted ones that just pushed their way to the front of the line. We have no idea who they are.

Democracy dies in misleading and incomplete stories.

One question I would ask of the person who wrote that Post comment about resettling refugees is why on earth he or she would assume that the refugees of 2021 will be anything like the refugees of 2017?

I was in a taxi from an airport late at night, a taxi driven by a Somali or Ethiopian immigrant. He was indifferent to the fact that I, a woman, needed help with baggage both getting it and putting it in the car - and was not really able to understand English. On the other hand, he had a "chief" nearby, a charming man who spoke excellent English. He helped with my baggage, refused a tip because I reminded him of his mother, explained that I should enter my address in the driver's ipad, gave me the price and quelled the driver with occasional glances. The driver was perfectly skilled in handling a car and GPS. And he lifted out my baggage at my destination, lifting baggage in and out of cars being a job he thought I should do when the our journey together began. This is an example, trying to show why the hardest part of coming into America will be the routine contempt many Islamic men feel for women, especially women moving about on their own. That will show up at once in small town Wisconsin and, in another way, in the big cities where so many women have good jobs. It will cause outrage. But I also think many Islamic men understand and support the Western outlook on women. And the others, let's assume, are willing to learn. What they will make of pronouns, I have no idea.

There's a reason nobody has been charged with sedition.

There's no law against it.

If anyone wants to prove me wrong, please view the relevant section of the us code.

NOTE: T here is a law against conspiracy to commit sedition but that is very different and would not apply. Imo.

Unless someone who has read the law wishes to explain hip it applies?

It's entirely possible IMO that within a few years of continued D misrule, we could see paramilitary forces formed by the Feds, consisting largely of the hundreds of thousands of unvetted young men who have left the challenges of their homelands behind to find easy prey among their idiot hosts.

These militias will be officered by such as Byrd the Shootist, and empowered to teach democratic and non-racist values to recalcitrants.

In today's market there is no such thing as a "low cost" used car. Late model used cars are selling for what they were bought for new.

Not to worry about how to work as delivery men (or women).

Amazon.com has plenty of vans for them to drive. As well as jobs at their distribution centers. And those centers are most likely located near dense population areas where other jobs exist, as well as housing, medical care, education, etc.

For Jeff Bezos, this is "win-win-win".

For Teamster's efforts to unionize Amazon.Com, this might be more like "lose-lose-lose."

Waste Management is Teamsters union - in our area, trash pickups are being delayed due to a shortage of drivers.

Funny that a man reading an article about Afghan refugees brought to Wisconsin would find his mind leaping to the 1/6 D.C. riot and not to the six-weeks-or-so overwhelming 2011 protest in the Madison Capitol rotunda. One's a lot closer to home, yes?

I read recently that Afghan refugees are responsible for half the rapes in Vienna, Austria, well above the Syrians' 10%. Doing the work Americans won't do.

No word on what percentage can speak Austrian.

steve uhr: "I have no doubt they will act as courteous tourists when they visit D.C..."

I guess rape is now considered "courteous" in urh-land:

"In Sweden, officials say that the vast majority of all violent sexual assaults and all sexual assaults where the victim and perpetrator are strangers to each other have been committed by migrants and refugees from other countries.

A full 92 percent of all cases of “gross rape” – or rape that involves violence – in Sweden are committed by people with an “overseas background,” the news site Avpixlat.com reports.

According to the site, of the top ten countries where accused rapists come from, nine are Islamic countries. The number one country-of-origin for the accused is Iraq, followed by Afghanistan, Somalia, Eritrea, Syria, Gambia, Iran, the Palestinian territories, Chile and Kosovo."

"Migrant rape fears spread across Europe: Women told not to go out at night alone after assaults carried out in Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland amid warnings gangs are co-ordinating attacks"

"- Sweden has issued warnings to women to be wary of potential attacks
- 15 young women have reported being groped by men in Kalmar, Sweden
- Austrian police have come under fire after claims attacks were covered-up
- Finnish police say they have information that the attacks are co-ordinated
= Vienna's police chief advises women not to go out on the streets alone
- Cologne police chief Wolfgang Albers relieved of his duties over handling of New Year's Eve sex attacks"

Of course, if the Althouse leftties/LLR-lefties stick to their traditional form, as more and more crimes are committed by muslim "immigrants", the more our lefties will lay the blame for that on Trump, Trump supporters and Christians in general.

Blaming conservatives/Christians for the acts of immigrants is usually the fallback position of the Althouse lefties after their "spark of divinity" defense of the perpetrators falls flat.

And its like clockwork.

steve uhr is in an intense competition with pro-marxist LLR Chuck and his Mini-Me gadfly as to who can be the most seemingly oblivious and disingenuous poster on Althouse blog.

Dumb Lefty Mark, as opposed to Lawyer Mark from VA, could easily compete as well but there is a volume of dumb post minimum threshold that must be met so Dumb Lefty Mark failed to qualify.
