I have to wonder how people who are involved in something like this can't see it for how bad it is. Are they blinded by the number of zeros on the check they're cashing?

I agree. It's probably the only good line in the series.
The French say follow the woman. Americans say follow the money. With enough zeros on the check anyone can be blinded.
