WaPo Fact Checker gives Biden 4 Pinocchios for saying that the new Georgia voting law is "sick … deciding that you’re going to end voting at five o’clock when working people are just getting off work."

Glenn Kessler writes:

On Election Day in Georgia, polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and if you are in line by 7 p.m., you are allowed to cast your ballot. Nothing in the new law changes those rules....

So where would Biden get this perception that ordinary workers were getting the shaft because the state would “end voting at five o’clock"? We have one clue. The law used to say early “voting shall be conducted during normal business hours.” Experts said that generally means 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The new law makes it specific — “beginning at 9:00 AM and ending at 5:00 PM.”

Obviously, nearly everyone would read Biden's statement to refer to Election Day. The bit about early voting could have been used to cut Biden some slack and back off from the full 4-Pinocchio denouncement, but that would be wrong, because the new law didn't even cut back early voting.

I'm glad to see Kessler giving 4 Pinocchios when deserved. Last month, I was critical of him for backing off to 3 and said: "Stop babying Biden! He's the damned President. If he needs to be babied, get him out of the presidency."

Nitpicky, but am I the only one annoyed by putting the quotation mark between "early" and "voting"? Either put "early" in brackets inside the quotation mark, or move "voting" outside the quotation marks.

I agree that is confusing, but I bet he did it because the statutory text he's quoting did not have the word "early" next to "voting." There was probably a heading that made the provision about pre-Election Day procedures and then the quote was somewhere underneath.

It's Election DAY, not Election month. You need to be alive on election day to cast a vote and the only way to ensure that is to allow voting only on election day unless you have a legit reason (i.e., being out of town) and have requested an absentee ballot.

iowan2 said...

The propaganda talking heads have been claiming that you are now breaking the law in Georgia if you give a voter in line, some water. People are going to die of dehydration trying to vote!

But of course what the law states, mirroring dozens of other states, it is against the law to give away food and drink at the polling place.

Like always with leftist...if its so bad, why are you forced to lie?

What motivated Biden to lie?
I know.Harry Reid. When he was confronted about the lie he told, claiming Romney wasnt paying federal taxes. Reid replied, "we won didn't we?"

The left lies with immunity.

That popped into my head this morning, contemplating vaccination passports.

When going to the polls, you don't have to prove identity, just vaccination. Whoops! saying that out loud exposes the whole opposition to ID as insane. So vaccination passports required for all, EXCEPT when voting. Much more sane /sarc/

Suppose there is a water leak somewhere in some building in Atlanta at 6 a.m. on Election Day.

If that happens, then the Republican poll-watchers should be sent home at 10 p.m., while the Democrat vote-counters continue to "count" votes all night.

But normally wouldn't a writer add the "early" in brackets to clarify that the passage referred to early voting? It would seem to make more sense.

I've lived in the Atlanta metro area for about 15 years. While I believe the time window for early, in-person voting is too long, I've used that option almost exclusively. I think it's great - especially the inclusion of at least one Saturday opportunity. Early in-person voting requires a photo ID and I'd like to see that standard be consistent for absentee ballot voting.

I've grown really tired of Stacey Abrams and others who have been gaming the system for decades and are now screaming like stuck pigs by efforts to verify the integrity of the election process.

Back in the 19th century, and before, it was common practice for political candidates to dispense whiskey to their supporters at the polls. Even George Washington, IIRC, when running for the House of Burgesses back in the 18th. Probably something we don’t want to do these days.

Even propaganda rags know that if you get too ridiculous that even the credulous stop paying attention. Biden managed to come up with not only a lie but one so far out of left field that no one understands where he got the idea in the first place because the whole concept is ridiculous. Even propagandists have to have some standards.

That said, WaPo's fact checking has been doing their usual BS with the Georgia voting law, declaring true things to be false from a certain point of view, knocking down strawmen they setup, and generally acting in bad faith. They get no praise from me. Liars will tell the truth when it serves them, and a liar who tells the truth is still a liar.

I have a subscription to the Atlanta paper (ajc.com), mainly just to read the sports section and obits I hardly ever read the news. While this bill was under consideration in the legislature I never saw a headline, e-mail link, or notification that did not describe it, right in the headline, as the "voter suppression" or "voter restriction" bill. Never was it described in any way as an improvement bill or increasing the integrity of the voting process. The Dems and the national media have blown the changes all out of proportion; there is absolutely nothing in this bill that will restrict anyone from voting. I can't believe how they have gone on and on over the water issue. It does however help to keep money out of the process where it doesn't belong, like the way Zuck and wife flooded Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett counties with millions.

Michael K said...

I do find it surprising that Trump wasn't routinely recording every call by way before that point.

Trump made a lot of mistakes last year. They resembled his mistakes the first year. He trusted people who were absolutely untrustworthy. Tillerson, McMasters, Congress, all of them, Priebus and a hundred others. He knew about the possibility of fraud and talked about it but did not do enough. Maybe he, again, had no allies to help. The black vote counters in the key states could not be trusted but the Republicans just did not seem to be alert enough. Again, this was a historic election, similar to 1876 but worse. Unless the Democrats succeed in destroying the country, the history of this time will be interesting.

I'm still reading about the origins of WWI and learning things. I wonder if this story will ever be written ?

Just asking questions (Jaq) said...

I think that the Davos, Democrat mega donor class used the old Shogun philosophy to steal, err, I mean fortify this election. “Win first, fight later.” The set up rules so that recounts are meaningless, audits are meaningless, clearly unmatched signatures still counted as “matches” per the rules the Georgia SoS agreed to, without having the legal authority, BTW. It didn’t help Trump that there was a concerted and highly effective campaign to deny him legal representation in the battles leading up to the election, where the election was lost by opening the door to massive vote rigging. You can’t even call it “fraud” because they set up the rules to allow it.

Just asking questions (Jaq) said...

" vote counters in the key states could not be trusted “

Postal workers either. In some swing states, as many as 50% of Republican mail in votes got “lost” and never counted, according to surveys that were done.

Tina, how many Democrat and Republican mail in votes were NOT sent in by the original addressee? There is no way to tell, and THAT is the problem with universal mail in votes.
