My mid-20s nieces (second generation immigrants, one mixed race) are at that same level of woke brainwash. So woke that they accused my siblings and me (first generation immigrants) of being the beneficiaries of systemic racism in America towards blacks. They concluded that we didn’t really earn our success and that we needed to check our privilege. My siblings and I were some of the 1.3 million boat people from Vietnam. My nieces are not only over-educated, they are miseducated. I pray my younger nephews will turn out better.

I don't believe that racial essentialism is a real thing. I think it resides in the human imagination, not in the real world. All of it is like assuming people with slanty eyes must be good at karate.
The idea that people can be classified -- and separated -- by geographic distribution and morphological distinguishability is wicked. It is done with a purpose, and that purpose is not good. You could do the same thing with the population of Kansas, for God's sake. Why would any sane human being want to do this?

No, actually, is is nothing like that. What do racial differences tell you about any individual person? Nothing. Zero. Knowing someone's race doesn't tell you how smart they are, how athletic they are, or how moral they are. I'm not talking about any individual person. I am talking about groups. Take height as an example. The average height of a white American male is about 5"10" and for an Asian American male is about 5'7". If I say white Americans are taller than Asian Americans, I am not saying every white person is taller than every black person.
Consider how dominant West Africans (whether Nigerian, Jamaican, or American) are in sprinting. Your position would require that his dominance be explained totally by sociocultural factors. The huge overrepresentation of blacks in professional football and basketball would also require this form of explanation.

When my children were toddlers they assumed that if they were cold, I was cold, if they were hungry, I was hungry. It really is hard for very young children to realize that their experiences and feelings are not universally shared by everyone on the planet. This young man seems to assume that if he is a racist and needs to do the work of anti-racism, everyone else, at least every other white person, must/should feel the same way. It simply does not occur to him that some people may have considered the issue of racism and "done the work" to oppose racism before he was born. My grandparents earned the wrath and retribution of the KKK for their efforts to "do the work" against racism. Because of their efforts, along with the work of many others over many years, I have the privilege to live in what is likely the most racially diverse and equitable society in history. I realize I didn't do much to earn this privilege, and I greatly admire those who did the heavy lifting. I have the much easier task of simply treating others with courtesy and respect. If this young man struggles with that and needs to "do the work" of fighting racism, then by all means I encourage him to do so, but not everybody else has the same feelings and same needs.

I completely take your points, and I think it's a very thoughtful comment. The concept behind what this kid is trying to articulate uses a rather convoluted, sociological definition of "racism" and "white supremacy." In this view, racism is not about individual attitudes towards other races or acts of bigotry but the effect of sociopolitical systems and cultural assumptions implemented for the benefit of whites at the exclusion of non-whites. It's further claimed that the benefits of these systems and institutions continue to accrue to whites even though they had no responsibility in developing or implementing them. These benefits are what's called "white privilege." Part of the idea is that in order to change these systems and cultural assumptions, white people first have to acknowledge that they exist.
Personally, I think there is something to this argument. I disagree with a lot of it, but it's still a very involved argument. I think this kid has been exposed to a very shallow rendering of that argument and hasn't engaged constructively with it. He's mouthing a script based on an argument that he doesn't really understand.
I'm doing the work, you do the work! Do the work. The work, do it! Why can’t you be like me, doing the work? I do the work. Do the work. Do. The. Work. Like me, I do the work, so you, do the work. You will be always be behind me. I will also do the work, the work is unending, but I did more than you so when you do the work you will do the work I have done, while I do the work. Twenty plus years ago I was much more hopeful because while there was disagreement about racial issues, and what was racist and what wasn't, there seemed to be a nearly universal agreement that fundamentally the ideal, and moral way to treat people was to treat them as individual people; now, not so much. If you are on the left and are worried about the rise of the alt-right then try to put yourself in the shoes of a young to mid-twenties white male. Their entire life he grew up being taught that racism is bad, one of the worst ways humans can treat other humans. That it is important to treat all people like individuals and never prejudge anyone based on their race or their sex. Then contrast that with what they see as they grow up. Where media only focuses on the racism of white people, it justifies or ignores the racism of any other groups of people or worse yet tries to proclaim something like ONLY white people can be racist. Everyone focuses on how men mistreat women and talks about how men need to do better. They see countless opportunities and set-asides offered to only women, or only non-white or non-asian men. Now someone on the left might argue that these actions are necessary to undue the past benefits white men have accrued. Ok, fair enough. Now ask yourself how well you'd expect that kind argument to fly with a young to mid-twenties black man who is upset because he and men that look like him are being specifically targeted for pat-downs by police under a local stop and frisk policy. History of groups does not control the morality of how individual people aught to treat other individual people.

I had dinner last week with an accomplished black lawyer (His wife and mine are buddies in an exercise class).
You want an earful about "white privilege" and "systemic racism"? Both he and his (black) wife come from families that have been well-educated and successful going all the way back to the 1870's. They have very old photos of their ancestors dressed to the hilt, obviously wealthy people. Most of their relatives attended college during the 20th century.
The thing is, their siblings on both sides are divided almost equally on the issue of "systemic racism". The successful ones scoff at the idea, while the not-so-successful blame their problems on whitey.
If racism is "systemic", why do successful blacks exist at all? Why, he asked, did Obama get ELECTED president, twice?
In contrast my wife and I come from much more humble backgrounds. My grandfathers were a coal miner and a timekeeper in a factory, respectively. My grandmothers were "homemakers"; my Polish-born grandma on my mother's side spoke poor English and had very little education. My dad was a major in the Air Force. My wife's parents were Latvian immigrants who arrived here with nothing. BOTH she and I are the first in our families to attend and graduate from college.
I ask: how did the black lawyer, his ancestors and relatives "make it" in America with all that "white privilege" going on, and all those whites oppressing them? Why did MY ancestors not benefit from "white privilege" instead of toiling in mines and scraping by?
Will someone sort that out for me?
(But Please, no bell-curve arguments. That idiot in the TikTok makes the case that ALL whites are oppressors, that ALL whites benefit from "white privilege".)
To me the notion that the "system" is DESIGNED and IMPLEMENTED by whites solely for the BENEFIT of whites and to keep blacks down is utterly preposterous. If so, why did whites pass the Civil Rights laws? Why Affirmative Action? Why Barack?

Being a math-kinda guy, I can figure out that I'm just about the same age as you. Like Michael K., a Southsider (though Southwest rather than Southeast Sider, viz., West Englewood). Went to St. Ignatius, where we had students from everywhere, though I don't recall a lot of Northsiders (lots of Northwest Siders).
Maybe Northsiders were more prejudiced but, while there may have been some jokes, there weren't any real conflicts among "White ethnic groups" in our area of the Southwest Side. The neighborhood was mostly Irish, but with lots of Italians, Germans, and Slavs. My Presbyterian Scottish father married my German Catholic mother in 1935. In the 60s, my Presbyterian cousin married in a Greek Orthodox ceremony that we all attended. Nobody disputed the parties' choices. Nobody really cared about the ethnic differences.
