"'There is no grievance that is a fit object of redress by mob law.' Those words are as true today as when Abraham Lincoln spoke them."

"As I said last summer when mob violence gripped our streets, so I say again about the mob violence at our nation’s Capitol last week: those persons responsible should be held accountable in the courts to the full extent of the law. The House has passed an article of impeachment against the president, but the Senate under its rules and precedents cannot start and conclude a fair trial before the president leaves office next week. Under these circumstances, the Senate lacks constitutional authority to conduct impeachment proceedings against a former president."

Tom Cotton says, in a statement (which I'm quoting in full).

"The Founders designed the impeachment process as a way to remove officeholders from public office—not an inquest against private citizens. The Constitution presupposes an office from which an impeached officeholder can be removed. Fidelity to the Constitution must always remain the lodestar for our nation. Last week, I opposed the effort to reject certified electoral votes for the same reason—fidelity to the Constitution—I now oppose impeachment proceedings against a former president. Congress and the executive branch should concentrate entirely for the next week on conducting a safe and orderly transfer of power. After January 20, Congress should get on with the people’s business: improving our vaccination efforts, getting kids back to school, and getting workers back on the job."

Click on my "Tom Cotton" tag. Tom Cotton is getting a lot of things right.

Remember the poll I had on November 23? "Trump voters only please: If you had to pick the 2024 GOP nominee right now: Trump/Tom Cotton." I said, "My poll, my options — do your own poll if you don't like the constraints." Tom Cotton looked like the most apt alternative to me at the time. And you Trump voters who answered the poll — or whoever answered the poll — chose Cotton over Trump, 55% to 45%. Let me see how that choice is holding up:

Trump voters only please: If you had to pick the 2024 GOP nominee right now:

Agree. There's a shit-ton of legitimate grievances that were only ever redressed by mob law. Not saying it's optimal but, Jesus, get real.

Of course you won't, Chuck, because you literally can't do it. And you can't do it because it can't be done. I voted for Cruz in the 2016 primaries, but I knew that had he been the candidate he would have lost all the midwest states including Ohio, and likely would have lost Florida, too. Jeb!! would have won Florida and, maybe, Ohio, but nothing else in the midwest- same for Rubio. Kasich would have lost Florida and every state in the midwest except for Ohio.

This is the reality of the demographic changes that have occurred over the last 20 years- states that have a Republican lean amount to less than 240 electoral votes, and the trend is getting worse, not better.

You got a good vision of the future, Chuck, when the Democrats took both GA seats by comfortable margins. Thats the future of the GOP.

Most Trumpists love the polling firm, Trafalgar Group. Strongly pro-Trump. Cahaly had both GA seats being held by the Republicans until Trump's $2000 pp idea, and his veto of the NDAA. Then, he says, the numbers fell like "falling off a cliff." He called the final GA numbers almost exactly. (Unlike the Trump-Biden general.) I think GA is Cahaly's home state.

First-rate Trump Political Malpractice.

Yancey Ward said...

Chuck, you are just a damned fool. The seats were lost the moment Trump wasn't at the top of the ticket any longer. The GOP might have salvaged the seats if they had insisted on enforcing the law in regards to absentee voting, but they didn't do that and just handed the two seats to the Democrats on a platter. If they had just acted after the November election to force a real audit of the absentee signatures, Perdue would never have had to enter the runoff. You can't blame this loss on Trump- the Georgia GOP holds all the blame.

Which is why Trump presents (yes, present tense) such a threat, and why all stops were pulled out to remove hm. Politics have realigned in this country. Today, the Democrats are the party of billionaires and giant corporations, while the Republicans are the party of the middle class, the strivers, the people who need stability to pay their rent and keep putting food on the table.

Republican incompetence has allowed Democrats to continue snatching up votes they haven't earned from people who simply never thought of going somewhere else. Trump made them think of going somweehwere else. The real trend is towards Dems getting 100% of the vote within a 5-mile radius of a university and losing everywhere else. All the Republicans need is a standard bearer not afraid to say it.

And you saw it in this election--they have ever more dominance over an ever smaller plot of land

Here's hoping Meade comes along soon to take out the trash.

A few months ago, I made a 10-point list of things Trump needs to do when (or 'if', if you like) he's reinaugurated. Most were obvious: clean up elections, prosecute the Russian hoaxers and election-thieves, and so on. One has become a lot more obviously necessary in the last 8 days: "Crush Google / Twitter / Amazon / Facebook."

Yesterday, I realized I'd forgotten one: "11. Publish the real names and addresses of every troll paid to fuck up Trump-friendly websites, and tell us exactly who paid them and how much. Prosecute any who failed to include these earnings on their tax forms."

Yancey Ward said...

Seriously, the various GOP party echelons in state after state hold most of the blame for what has happened. It isn't like universal absentee voting had to be a thing in WI, MI, or PA- all of those legislatures let it happen, and the GOP controlled all of them. Same goes for AZ and GA, and the GOP in NC tried to lose those races, too.

It is mail in voting from now going forward- the Democrats will never let go of this method of voting, and everywhere it is enacted, the GOP becomes uncompetitive.

Go back and look at the 2004 election- it is the last election a Republican candidate won a majority of the popular vote, and Bush only got 286 electoral votes while winning the popular vote by 2.4%. Of the states he won in 2004, Colorado, Virginia, Nevada, and New Mexico- totalling 33 electoral votes are now fully blue states- states a Republican wouldn't win even if they won the popular vote. In fact, no states have turned red in the intervening years- none.

False. Universal no-excuse absentee voting in Michigan occurred as a result of the GOP legislature's absolutely opposing it, and it turning into a ballot initiative. It was on the ballot in 2018 in Michigan. We Republicans opposed it; campaigned against it. I voted against it. It won easily. It won easily, in the 2018 Trump-backlash Blue Wave election in Michigan. Where we lost the governorship (Whitmer beat the Trump-annointed Bill Schuette), the AG (again another Trumpist Republican got whacked), and the Secretary of State's office. Even worse, the same Trump-backlash Blue Wave election produced another ballot-initiative win; a redistricting commission. Republicans have been getting slaughtered in Michigan since Trump won the state by less than 11,000 votes in 2016.

I don't understand how anyone could argue that an H. Clinton administration would have responded to COVID with an Operation Warpspeed. That proto-adminstration had not one bit of innovative thinking to it. The idea that a vaccine could be developed and tested in under a year would have been (was, in fact!) seen as "anti-science" - therefore impossible.

As for Middle East peace - considering the iron commitment of the entire Left, worldwide, to the "plight" of the Palestinians and the sense on the Left that no peace would be possible in the ME without redress of Palestinian grievances, I also don't see how anyone could believe that an H. Clinton administration would have made any inroads at all, even the above dismissively stated "flights for shoppers."

Do we need to discuss the reduction in rate of new regulations and the absolute reduction in old ones? Is anyone going to argue that H. Clinton would have done anything remotely like what Trump's administration did to address this?

There is no grievance that is a fit object of redress by mob law.

Here's part of the speech (1838) that line came from (CRs added):

Next, negroes, suspected of conspiring to raise an insurrection, were caught up and hanged in all parts of the State: then, white men, supposed to be leagued with the negroes; and finally, strangers, from neighboring States, going thither on business, were, in many instances subjected to the same fate.

Thus went on this process of hanging, from gamblers to negroes, from negroes to white citizens, and from these to strangers; till, dead men were seen literally dangling from the boughs of trees upon every road side; and in numbers almost sufficient, to rival the native Spanish moss of the country, as a drapery of the forest."

Sorry AA, your poll is an exercise in vacuous narratives. 2024 is a long time away, in political terms. This election will turn on what happens in 2022 elections. Is 2 years long enough for the voters to forget about what happened in 2020? Who knows? One thing I know is that past riots(1968) and radical groups (Weather Underground, Red Army Faction, etc.) have shown me that the politicians are worthless at solving major issues. Moreover, the World has a way of encroaching on our focus and SJW demands. The USA is quite naĂŻve as to what happens in most of the World. Trust me, history repeats itself. For example, now that the USA is self-sufficient in oil (net exporter as of this year due to shale) the country has no need to protect anyone in the Middle East. No more subsidization by the USA and its taxpayers of 'free trade'.
The World is returning to 'Empires' - take what you want economics - similar to before WW2. Consequently, we'll see the rise of conflict in Europe and the Far East (the World's historical conflict zones for 1,000s of years) between various nations. These nations have no options now that the USA has retrenched and doesn't care anymore. The World is also becoming an 'Old Age' home, except for countries like France, USA, India, etc., because the World is running out of young people - population Demographics is a bitch.

No more Congress People!

We need doers, not professional debaters. At least a governor (of a large state, please, if you must.
