Melania tells a joke in West Bend, Wisconsin.

I love the rough-hewn lumber background. It's almost as expressive of Melania's oneness with the place as Lady Gaga's pickup truck.

Now, Lady Gaga was mocked for that effort at performing American rural culture — redneckface, we might call it.
Much as that deserves mockery, perhaps it's so absurd it comes all the way back around to decent respect. The dashing of the nearly full beer can onto the ground might be the equivalent of a wink. I'm kidding! But the truth is Lady Gaga really does drive a truck — a 1993 Ford SVT Lightning pickup

The Trump campaign has responded, not on the strange visuals, but on the issue: "Nothing exposes Biden’s disdain for the forgotten working men & women of PA like campaigning with anti-fracking activist Lady Gaga... Biden repeatedly promised left-wing activists he would end fracking, which would be an economic death sentence and financial Armageddon for families in Pennsylvania and across the country."

Meanwhile, we could talk about the clothes Melania wore to West Bend — brass buttoned up and staunchly military — and the choice of a rough wood background in West Bend (which isn't a rural outpost). We've seen that rough-hewn wooden statue of Melania — so perhaps that background is as appropriate as Lady Gaga's big truck.

What mileage does that huge thing get? It's much bigger than the 1993 Ford pickup, which I see only gets 14 mpg in the city. You know Gaga collects cars. Here are 14 of them. That Rolls-Royce Corniche gets 9 mpg in the city. How can an anti-fracking activist have cars like that? Is there a such thing as an out-and-proud activist for hypocrisy?

From just this post, I identify Gaga as having a public persona and a private persona. Lots of celebs are wildly hypocritical in their lives. Their exploitation of natural resources is epic, all the while ordering commoners to recycle their sanitary napkins.

Much bigger? In what way? I think it only has a bigger motor, a 5.8L V8. Edmunds says it's combined city/hwy mpg was 13. My 2015 Ford 150 is bigger, except for the motor.

why did they hire a midget to play the lady gaga part?
She's shorter than the truck; and looks like a child PRETENDING to be an adult

I remember Gaga. Four years ago she had her own military style as the star fleet commander (or something) when she rallied the troops for HRC - Better Together. https://cdn.images.dailystar.co.uk/dynamic/140/photos/566000/704566.jpg

Ga...because she isn't a lady, acts like it was the first beer she ever opened in her life. This is why we point and laugh at them. She joined with Antifa early on, holding her "Love Trumps Hate" virtual signaling sign....(since the only hate going around is from THEM) so she can suck eggs. I hope they get her house. Sorry, not sorry.

With an ad like that Gaga must be trying to motivate what's left of the Democratic base. They must think Trump is winning.

I want the anti-petroleum activists to give up all plastics in their respective lives.
No modern insulation in their homes.
No plastic sheeting of any kind.
No lubricants for those engines.

No heart valves.
No plastic medical devices of any kind.

No refrigeration.

They're so stupid that I cannot properly call them hypocrites.

Sure, I believe that, like Jay Leno drives a 1941 American LaFrance Series 600 pumper V-12 Firetruck.

I'd never seen the Goo Goo speak before - it seems to have hermaphroditic boobage.

Guess GaGa is green like Gore. As long as you buy carbon offsets from poor people with no electric, living in 30,000 sq foot houses is fine.

Watched the Lady Gaga clip. Like many celebrity clips; you see what happens when they do not have a well written script or a director.

Another one of Lady Gaga’s flops. She strains to look natural in that clip and fails miserably.

The problem with tracking is pollution. Rich people spending their money in collectibles that will not be driven hundreds of thousands of miles is not same as traveling in private jets--no doubt her actual hypocracy.

For Lady Gaga, born and bred in Manhattan, owning a pick up truck is probably some form of avant-garde. Anything to be different. Up to a point.

Cars and environmentalism are both powerful lifestyle brands. Usually you must must one or the other, but what is the point of being a celebrity if you can't have it all?

So our energy needs get met with solar power, which requires plastics and petroleum?
Or wind, which requires plastics and petroleum?
We cannot dam rivers because fish > humans.
Solar is scary.

Go live like Ted Kaczinski or STFU.

@ cacimbo: FLOTUS is standing in front of the standard fall backdrop for talk shows, weddings.... If you zoom out there are lots of pumpkins and flowers.

It was held at a rustic barn converted into a wedding venue. Based on a few weddings I have attended recently, seems like these are replacing the old dance halls & bowling alleys for wedding receptions. One wedding we attended was in a newly built "barn".

Romantic Rural Setting.
Spectacular Rustic Barn. Big City Convenience.
Located just 15 minutes north of Milwaukee, Kingsheart Farm is a picturesque country estate surrounded by breathtaking natural spaces. At its heart stands an 1800’s fieldstone-and-timber barn - magnificently restored as a premier special events venue. Seating up to 150 guests, the barn’s lofty space and stunning natural interior provide a versatile and unforgettable setting for your special event.

Lady Gaga's car collection seems childishly sentimental.

If she ever drives those cars, her mechanic will be making a fortune.

Bob Boyd said...

Looks like a newer Ford F-150. Mileage would depend on what motor is in it, among other things. Technology has come a long way. I would bet even the least fuel efficient motor in the new truck gets better mileage than the '93. The range is probably around 15mpg city for the biggest motor to mid 20's mpg highway for the most efficient model.

How many new Biden votes would that Gaga ad garner? I'd say probably zero, but lets say 10. How much did that cost per vote. You can see how the clearly superior economics of voter fraud will be irresistible, and you know for sure that it will work better. Pay a million for the Gaga ad or pay 100 people 10,000 each to deliver millions of strategically placed fraudulent votes.

When did beer cans get so crushable? I've been drinking beer for 50 years and the cans have all been easily crushed. But in 1960 or 65 were the cans like tin and not so easily crushed?
In 67, shot putter on the track team mentions how his dad says he can drink beer when he can rip the can apart or crush it? Kid was 14 but did not lack for strength. Gaga's routine has been done for years - but there was a time when crushing the can conveyed meaning not so apparent today. And jeepers Melania gets ushered in by the Jones song? I listen to Sugar Magnolia these days and all I notice is the sexist stuff. Waits back stage while I sing to
you? Yoko wasn't gonna wait back stage.

I know it's a parody, but I can't quite decide what or who it's making fun of: American excess or clueless celebrities? She herself is a form of American excess.....I can't bond with Melania. There's something very foreign about her. I'm not prejudiced against Slovenian super models, but they're not part of my world.....Melania is very beautiful, but it's a kind of beauty that has never required humor or charm to close the deal.

daskol said...

She seems like a nice girl, and generally not contemptuous of most Americans. Hey enviro-hypocrisy aside, she likes Americans and American stuff. The ad may be a misfire, but she needs to be seen to be doing what she can for Biden for her branding.

I believe Melania is wearing what she wore on arrival to DC for the inauguration, minus sunglasses. I remember it only because Trump had stepped out of the plane and the TV folks kept waiting for her to step out, not realizing for several moments that, in fact, she was standing (with sunglasses) right next to him.

But damn, her accent makes what she says impossible to listen to!

@BudBrown: When I started drinking, a lot of beer cans for the cheap brands were still made of steel. You couldn't crush the empties with one hand, but you could fold them by rolling them between your thumb and forefinger to start a crease in the middle; then folding the top so that the seams of the two ends touched each other. Then aluminum cans came along and made it too easy. Beer can folding became a lost art. (I quit drinking in 1983.)

Is Gaga really mocking MAGA voters, or is she trying to say, "Hey, I'm as American as anyone of you and can probably outdrink all of you?"

It's funny that she campaigning with Biden in Pennsylvania when her sometime co-star, Bradley Cooper could do Biden more good. He's a Democrat. He's from Philadelphia. Suburban COVID moms would love him. And as a bonus, he speaks French.

tim in vermont said...

She does have some pretty cool cars, and doesn’t care what they cost to keep running, she probably has someone on retainer with the job of making sure they all are in good running shape when she needs them.

The problem with wind and solar power, @readering, is that they are intermittent, and the only tech we have here in the real world that can ramp up to fill in when those fail (unpredictably, BTW) is fracked natural gas. Vermont Yankee, the nuke plant on the Connecticut River was shut down because it was unable to compete with natural gas, if you want another bugbear that natural gas addresses. Of course many gigatons of CO2 will be emitted to make up for the lost energy of that one, since the carbon footprint of the plant was sunk cost anyway.

Natural gas produces half the CO2 per unit of energy compared to coal, and none, that’s right NONE, of the mercury.

But it’s no surprise to people here that you are pig ignorant on the subject of energy.

Thing about her pickup is that single cabs have seemingly mostly disappeared, because they don’t have any storage space. My current pickup is an extended cab, and the “back seat” is filled with junk. Right before we came down here, I realized That four handguns and two AR-15s had migrated there (though I usually had both the G17 and G20 in the central console). Plus, of course, about 1,000 rounds of ammunition of various calibers, range bag, targets, target frame, sleeping bag, clothing, tools, computer, etc. Planning to get a crew cab with a short bed this coming to replace the Tahoe that came down to AZ. A lot cheaper than a new Tahoe, and more carrying capacity. Still, two things that a regular cab F150 of that vintage provided was a bed big enough for 4’x8’ sheets of plywood, and a convenient back window for a gun rack. I keep thinking that, sure, I could put a gun rack in the back window of my pickup, but the door to the back seat area is on the other side of the truck. Easier to get to long guns if they are on the back seat...

Like overhyping Biden's unsurmountable lead in the polls could backfire by causing unexcited Biden voters not to bother, this Gaga ad might turn off Biden supporters in those midwestern states... Democrat voters in those states tend to loathe the beer-swilling truck-driving image, and pride themselves on being the opposite. But, as with everything else 2020, who knows?

One reason I now have a Honda Pilot is that 4x8 sheets of plywood fit in the back with the second seat down. I had a Toyota Highlander before and the space back there was smaller. No gun rack, though.

Lady Gaga wanted to be an actress and she said that she wasn’t pretty enough to be cast in leading roles in college. I think the real reason might be that she can’t act.
