“Fill that seat” chant goes up as Trump’s rally begins in North Carolina.

I'm watching on YouTube.

He says his nominee will be a woman.... then takes a poll. Woman or man? Woman wins. By a lot.

“It will be a woman. A very talented, very brilliant woman."

ADDED: He’s still going strong, more than an hour and a half later.

AND: He's finally done. Nearly 2 hours. His closing music is not the usual "You Can't Always Get What You Want" but "YMCA." He got out of the airplane with "Macho Man" playing. The show featured 2 Village People songs.

Of course he'll catch some of the flack Biden did with his VP selection that had to be a woman. But Trump has signaled ACB for that seat for quite some time. Plus he's released his list a couple of times including multiple women.

Biden seemed to be flailing about to find a qualified woman AFTER the announcement. He finally settled on the least worst of the trial balloon women. And look at what he ended up with.

I don't care how the Senators vote... VOTE and let the votes be counted.

If Mitt and the other RINOs crawfish and vote nay... let the voters decide if they are fit to serve.

Come on. Not every person thinks of taking the poll at their rally. The guy has a weird gift.

Can you imagine the ride home for the husband who did not cheer at the mention of a lady judge with his lady right beside him?

Icy.

In the past 3 elections, the enthusiasm told the story of the election. Biden may win, but Trump's people are fired up and have been. Obama in his first campaign filled places like this. Obama had more enthusiasm than Romney. Trump had it over Hillary.

I'm listening to the rally ("peaceful protest") in the background while I work. I haven't seen or listened to an entire Trump rally in a long time.

I'm genuinely amazed. I'm a supporter, but I would be honest if it was going poorly. Tonight he sounds like he hasn't lost a step since he first ran years ago. He is full of energy. He riffs on one topic after another. His comic timing is impeccable. His chemistry with the crowd is electric. He's entertaining, but gets his message out effectively. I find the whole thing mesmerizing. Trump really is a political force the likes of which this country has rarely if ever seen.

I'll have whatever he's having.

If it's a woman Me Too will be hard hit. Unless they find a guy willing to say how she rape him in college. I expect anything in 2020.

Thank Democrat filibuster for that.

Barrett's already been vetted.

Cocaine Mitch should allow for a 30 minute question time for all 100 senators then put it to a vote.

Swear her in the next day.

Sure, we'll probably lose NYC, Chicago, LA, Portland, and Seattle to flames.

But so fucking what?

RBG's fault was thinking like a woman. Women can avoid thinking like a woman but it makes them tense and anxious. Then they say to hell with it and go back to thinking like a woman.

Men take satisfaction in thinking like a man so they're fairly stable, feminized recent SC appointments aside.

Even Barack Obama stressed in 2016 how important it was for the President to nominate a SCOTUS replacement as quickly as possible, even in an election year. I think we should listen to him.

Roberts wants to be a brilliant politician. That's more social science.

"Fill That Seat!"-----> "No More Hearings?!?!"

In 1941, a sitting Senator was nominated and confirmed on the same day, bypassing the Judiciary Committee since he was a Senator. Oh, and he was a Democrat.

As the insanity wends it way thru 4th quarter 2020, I gotta a feeling our hostess will be calling strikes/balls/hits with ever increasing enjoyment. Hers, of course, but allowing us to share. BTW, ICCFL who Althouse votes for, she's intellectually honest with her decisions. I'm not some lefty crap-weasel believing all who disagree with me are evil & need to be shunned (guess canceled is the new reality?).

At the gas station, "Fill her Up"!

Kinda quaint, No?

But will it be a person of color?

Perhaps Kamala could be his pick.

She has proven to be pick worthy.

A woman won’t be #MeToo’d. Also might be harder for undecided women voters to watch get dragged thru the mud by Democrat senators.

Hopefully they have been actively vetting her high school yearbooks in case this happened.

I know what. Althouse for Chief Justice. We have to arrest Roberts for his crimes if he won’t resign first. And then we will get cruel neutrality in the opinions...maybe heavy on the cruel. Then we can get TV cameras put into the oral arguments so we will get to see her cute smile on CSPAN.

Once again, Trump is sucking all of the air out of any campaign tent. The Obama's emptier-suit Biden is running on NOT Trump, and "Black Lives Matters" as a campaign slogan.

Aggie said...

Maybe Trump should fill Ginsberg's seat, win the election, and then declare that 'Packing the Supreme Court' is too excellent an idea to let it go to waste. And then jam in 2-4 more young, healthy conservative justices. After all, he wouldn't be up for re-election again, and who the hell needs a honeymoon? He made it through last time.....

Seriously though, (asking Ms. Althouse) I think the Republicans, if they re-take the House and preserve the Senate, would make serious political hay if they could figure out a way to preserve the Fillibuster for posterity.

1. Is there a way to do it?
2. Do you agree it should be done - or should it be abolished in your opinion?

Thanks!

Answer: Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Asheville

I'm Not Sure said...

Shouldn't it be the best candidate available, regardless of race/sex/whatever? If "it has to be a woman", isn't that admitting that women can't compete on qualifications alone?

Just wondering.

Too bad Amy Barrett isn't muslim, she'd be untouchable. As a practicing Catholic, she'll be put to a different standard. Although it is unconstitutional to set a religious test for office in this country, that will not help her. (Those senators who deem her 'too catholic' should be immediately expelled for violating their oath of office.)

I'm set in my choice for Trump, but this latest plot twist is unsettling. I'm not sure how it will play out. Perhaps the Dems will find some way of making hay out of it. The Republicans do look hypocritical, but, then again, so do the Democrats. The Dems what with their control of the media may be able to make the Republicans look more hypocritical than their Dem allies. My own opinion is that they're both parties are self serving because that's what politicians do, and let it go at that.....I wonder how many people are genuinely undecided. There can't be many, but maybe this will sway them and who knows which way.

Diana Rigg would have made a good Becky Sharp, but she's not for Dickens. She was wasted as Lady Dedlock in Bleak House. It's an okay acting performance in a fine adaptation of a Dickens' novel. The problem is she wasn't Emma Peel. Lady Dedlock is vulnerable, put upon, and repressed. Who wants to see Diana Rigg as a victim and without a glint of humor. There's acting and there's stardom. She reveals her acting ability here but not her star power.....I retreat to BBC productions of Shakespeare and Dickens to escape political correctness. It's my safe space.

They might criticize ACB for being a Catholic but then what is Hidin' Biden? Crazy Nancy? It would kind of tangle the election to attack her on that. And otherwise, what's to criticize?

Best President ever?

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the creation of a "1776 Commission" to fight the growth of far-left revisionist history such as the 1619 Project.

"The legacy of 1776 will never be erased," Trump said in a speech at the National Archives building to celebrate Constitution Day.

The "1776 Commission" will promote patriotic education in America's schools and oppose reductionist partisan historical narratives. The president's speech was the sharpest criticism to date of critical race theory in education and media.

"Whether it is the mob on the street or the cancel culture in the board room, the goal is the same," Trump said. "To silence dissent, to scare you out of speaking the truth and to bully Americans into abandoning their values, their heritage, and their very way of life."

Packing the court is a dumb idea. I hope cooler heads prevail, but I doubt it. Once that starts, every time there is a change in the party in control there will be a push to get an advantage on the court by adding more justices. It should be easy for any sensible person to see this is a really bad idea.

One of the guys at Volokh today had a post on all the things the Dems may do in retaliation if they get enough control: ending the filibuster; expanding the lower courts as well in order to dilute the impact of the Trump appointments; statehood for DC and PR; and greatly expanding the House by hundreds of members. Again, every one of these is a really stupid idea. I could go on for quite a while on each one and why it is such a bad idea but this is Ann's blog, not mine. Maybe I should start my own. I just can't believe all the stupidity that is breaking out over the death of RGB. But, it is all coming from Democrats, so that explains a lot.

Probably reminds him of all the fun he had in the 70s. And it can't hurt him with the gays. It would be a a beautiful thing, lovely, if the margin of Trump's 2020 victory was greater than 2016, the increased margin provided by higher shares of black, hispanic, gay and Jewish voters. Not only is that possible, but if you squint, the polling is starting to point that way.

Under normal circumstances I agree with you.

But this is war with an amoral intractable enemy.

It is a war we must win and they must lose.

My kids freedom is at stake.

That means putting a woman on that pedestal knowing the democrats are going to commit political suicide in an insane rage trying to take her down.

It will be more effective than letting another man be accuse of gang rape.

This is my prediction. I know everything.

1. Trump will not nominate anyone as new relevations from Woodward will occupy his mind. Schumer will go after him every day.
2. Biden will go after this as a campaigner and will get more democratic voters to vote early. Lines will be covered by media and TV. Trump will panic.
3. RGB quote about new president may or may not be accurate but media will focus on it. Every Senator from Dems will quote it. More early votes. More protests.
4. Mitch will ask Trump to go slow due to protests.
5. More GOP Senators will join Collins and say let’s wait till after the election.

Cheers!

America's Politico returns!!

Unfortunately, Donald J Trump has so utterly upended the political processes and continuously captures light in a bottle that any tongue in cheek over the top commentary on a blog site pales so badly by comparison as to render it thoroughly mundane.

Alas, we cannot return to those heady 2016 Pre-Trump as POTUS days.

You have to feel sorry for the average liberal who is now mentally exhausted after screaming into the sky for the last 4 years. Nothing is going right for them. It wasn't supposed to be this way after 8 years of Obama.

The trial balloons of packing the court, admitting PR & DC as states and their senate votes are all terrible ideas made in desperation to hold on to power. This is not something healthy and confident party's do when they are out of power.

Independents aren't fooled for a second that if the shoe were on the other foot and Hillary was president and Clarence Thomas died that she wouldn't fill his post before his casket was lowered into his grave. The republicans will get a pass on this from normal people if they fill the position. That's reality.
