"... without barely a wimpier..."

A natural and undeniable campaign narrative with which Biden and the dems will be confronted.

Not by the dems of course, but in the republican ads that aren't censored by the legacy and social media.

Drago said...

I really hope the Trump campaign uses the footage of the dems celebrating the destruction of their own cities along with Howard's Heroes in Seattle while sending armed personnel to break up moms and kids playing on playgrounds, arresting a father for playing baseball in a park with his daughter and busting up orthodox Jewish funerals.

Good one. That'll sting.

Republicans were already making inroads with minorities and urban voters. It explains the timing.

Good news Howard! Howard's Heroes in Europe shout antisemitic chants, including “dirty Jews,” at a massive demonstration against racism in central Paris, France, on Saturday.

The left furnishes the Trump campaign with so much material they don't even need to add editorial comment. Show Whitmer kneeling in a crowd of protesters and then cut to that 77 year old barber being arrested for cutting hair.

Yancey Ward said...

Pacwest got the real intent here. Trump is preparing battle on the economy, and it will be hard for the Democrats to answer this tactic. It isn't like Trump was the biggest supporter for the shutdowns, and it was the Republicans that pushed back against it, and are still doing so.

“without barely a” wimper.

Texts autocorrect wimper. Mine chose “simper” the first time. Wimpier was the option on the right. It isn’t difficult to figure out what happened.

I know you carry a fancy that you are as smart or smarter than Trump. Pedantic games are played by pedantic people who find themselves at the end of an intellectual box canyon. The self styled elites are the worst.

But any cruelly neutral observer would know the truth.

Ken B said...

“ I think the substance of the tweet is worth understanding and discussing. I didn't put this up solely to point out the errors.”

I am less convinced “without barely” is an error. There are lots of phrases like this, that shade into a redundant negative. You sneer at “can't hardly” but it’s standard in some dialects. This is a trace of a subjunctive used to express doubt. In French, which has a robust subjunctive, formal prose inserts a redundant negation “ne” in such cases. It has a formal name in French grammar. https://french.kwiziq.com/revision/grammar/how-to-understand-the-ne-expletif

This was not uncommon in English in days of yore, and one see this kind of faint echo in regional dialects, especially in the south.

“I think the substance of the tweet is worth understanding and discussing.”

Oh OK. Well then:

It’s total BS. And it’s embarrassing that you think your commenters are dumb enough to think a city has been taken over, such that your commenters want to use this alternative universe tweet as anything more than another throw away chance to say that the libs suck shit. Which is what they say re everything and anything.

BTW, I happen to have been all over the city recently. And am still here. There are (literally) open doors and small kids out playing and tweeting birds and joy everywhere. (BTW, we (w/ our dogs) rack up at least seven miles jogging every day.) So, it’s really obvious to me that this is BS. But, even your con DJT lovers can’t really say much that they haven’t already said. “Libs are evil, DJT is great.” What more do you expect from this tweet? Seems like fussing w/ the text is a welcome change.

IMHO.

Stuck clock alert. Birkel is right. That is why I fought pedantry with pedantry, in explaining about the remains of the subjunctive in regional English.

buwaya said...

The substance is obvious.

Trump makes the argument about the lack of virtue among his opponents. He uses the classic hypocrisy pincer enhanced by values inversion - a pincer with painful spikes attached. Well done, but the setup was just lying there for all to see, just needed picking up and squeezing.

Its difficult to wiggle out of this, within the usual rules of controversy, though of course they have rarely applied. The argument part of these fights is rarely the decisive thing. Wars aren't won by fencers swords but by weight of artillery fire.

Does Trump have a way to counter-fire sufficiently? He did in 2016, using guerrilla tactics, of being strong in just the few spots where his enemy was weak, and relying on, effectively, subversive samizdat.

buwaya said...

The substance of the message is obvious Readering - the Dem establishment is hypocritical and, moreover, their values are inverted, loving the useless and harmful while hating the useful and beneficial.

Oh, the spelling error is definitely intentional- the tweet will be retweeted by Trump's enemies for the next two days.

"without barely" is unintentional, but it is a common thing in English as others have noted- I can't even, at this point, call it an error.

Birkel said...

Gahrie,
Most of the people in academia think very narrowly on a narrow topic in a narrow field about which few others care. It's kind of baked into the proverbial cake - which you should not be forced to bake, btw.

Very few of them think widely about broad, meaningful subjects that matter to many. It's a failing of the academy. There are so very many more that attract greater attention!

You don't get published thinking about big issues that cross over fields.

I have no doubt pedantry was a very useful skill, professionally. And less useful elsewhere. But on this blog it creates a special something. It's unavailable elsewhere. So it works.

And here we are.

Yes.

He is pointing out the hypocrisy of Dem executives.

They love messaging to establish shared values.

Church is not worth gathering.

Protest are worth any number of deaths.

Businesses can be "locked down" forever, while big stores remain open.

side note:
Test AND QUARANTINE in central state run facilities WOULD work: they do this in VN, TH, China, Singapore.
(media and gov always call for "more testing" without explaining what comes after positive results)

US will not attempt the QUARANTINE, so its "everyone without a lobbyist" suffers based on the city and state leaders virtue signalling.

My God, how many times must Trump's tweets blow up in the media before these idiots understand that the spelling errors draw attention to the message, at least among LIVs who otherwise wouldn't care? If Joe Biden is seriously relying on a "Trump's a wimp, crack down!" impulse, he'll be bitterly disappointed. And quite a few nationalists are smug about leftist cities burning, if they're not openly celebrating. They're not wanting to provide gas and matches to the BLM protestors setting the NY elite storefronts on fire, but give it time.

By the way, I can see that almost all the liberals here are coming out as Coulter fans- but the fact is, she's taken the ticket. We know she's trying to earn her pay by being in the Too Right Wing for Trump, which is the only acceptable position. If Coulter was Right Wing for Trump, she'd be in serious danger of deplatforming. Tucker Carlson is the same way. At TheDonald.Win, Fox is regarded as having a MAGA Boomer veneer, at best.

A simple truth my intellectual betters refuse to acknowledge. President Trump is always selling. Before you critique the message/messenger, figure out the message and the target audience. But the President also knows the medium is against him and factors that in also.

This is all intuitive, built up over a million interactions during his lifetime. This is not cognitive output, its instinctual.
