How shocking is "And they went in and it was like a knife cutting butter"?

Trump used that phrase yesterday at the Roundtable on Justice Disparities in America (transcript). Context:
In Minneapolis, they went through three nights of hell. And then I was insistent on having the National Guard go in and do their work. It was like a miracle. It’s just everything stopped. And I’ll never forget the scene. It’s not supposed to be a beautiful scene. But to me, it was after you watched policemen running out of a police precinct. And it wasn’t their fault. They wanted to do what they had to do, but they weren’t allowed to do anything.... I said, “I’m sorry. We have to have [the National Guard] go in.” And they went in and it was like a knife cutting butter, right through, boom. I’ll never forget. You saw the scene on that road wherever it may be in the city, Minneapolis. They were lined up. Boom. They just walked straight. And yes, there was some tear gas and probably some other things and the crowd dispersed. And they went through it by the end of that evening. And it was a short evening. Everything was fine.... So I just want to tell you that we’re working on a lot of different elements having to do with law, order, safety, comfort, control, but we want safety. We want compassion. We want everything.
As I drove home from my sunrise run this morning...

... I had "Morning Joe" on the satellite radio, and he was riffing emotively on that phrase "it was like a knife cutting butter." Joe acted as though the phrase connoted murderously cutting into human flesh, and Who talks like that?!! In Joe's vivid nightmare, Trump is unfathomably evil. Joe said it's as if Trump were "running for President of the Confederacy" and Trump has decided to speak only to "angry white men — angry old white men."

Joe is 57, by the way, so that's a bit old, and he is also white and angry, so maybe he knows whereof he speaks, and yet he does not mean that he hears the siren call of Donald Trump.

But let's look at this phrase "like a knife cutting butter." It's an idiomatic expression! It means it was easy. You see the context. It doesn't mean the National Guard was sadistically injuring people. It means all they had to do was show up and walk straight in and everything worked out just fine.

It wasn't even a hot knife....

The inability to understand metaphor is, of course, highly selective. A commentator like Joe has to use what Trump gives him. He must scan the transcripts every day, looking for something to pretend to be anguished about.

Classic Trump. All the right putzes will be outraged.

You need a hot knife. Butter that's too cold is a problem otherwise. It won't spread properly.

There's an audience for Joe's kind of performative anguish, but it's a niche audience at best.

Compared to say, porn, the size of the audience is almost undetectable. Trump's audience is like that porn audience. They're there, but nice people don't talk about them.

A knife cutting cheese would have been good.

He should have pronounced "butter" as my NY relatives do, when using a similar metaphor: "but-TAAH".

Does that also count as an analogy? Especially using "like" to announce it? Awaiting a ruling

Trump is speaking to angry white men, all right. Also angry white women, angry Hispanics of both sexes, black men and women who are angry about losing their homes livelihoods, and so forth.

It is obvious some Americans do not care about the anthem, the flag and patriotism. I know the last word is difficult to grasp when the political system has tried desperately to eliminate it with the so called "diversity". I will be lying if I say I am sorry for the death of Floyd as I have no feelings for habitual criminals and I cannot believe he is being glorified in his death. When are the Americans going to start caring for their anthem, flag and nation?

Coming from Trump it is not shocking at all. Pouring gasoline on the fire is his primary modus operandi.

It's over. Time for the Republicans to address why two Republican presidencies in a row have been such dumpster fires. The party itself is the problem.

Yeah, well. Speaking of anguish, I am wondering whether to attend the Trump rally in Tulsa this coming Friday. If so, should I try to go in and hear Trump speak? Or should I attend a counter-protest and talk trash to Antifa soy boys? I can play the dozens really well, and I feel sorely tempted to do so.

Studious ignorance is now a popular pose among the #FakeNews cognoscenti. The wide range of idioms they pretend to misunderstand would be impressive if weren’t so damaging to our public discourse. The problem with pretending to be dumb, as I used to tell my Freshman Earth Sciences classes, is that after awhile they missed so much their no longer pretending.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

With the media cheerleading Antifa, Democrats playing footsie with ACAB and slow Joe slagging MLK to praise BLM, it’s Trump praising the peacemakers that strikes ARM, our resident Mika, as a “gas on the fire” comment? Go blow Joe some more you dope.

Poor Joe. Trump cut through his angry mob like a knife through butter.

The country must burn, right Joe? It must burn on the alter of leftism in order to absolve itself of the sin of electing Trump, and not Hillary.

Cheer up, Joe. The arson and looting will re-commence if/when the cops get acquitted, and again when Trump wins re-election.

All this storm and drawn out-drang is really still all about Morning Joe reaction to Trump's remarks about his lover's face.

If Trump supported the protesters, then fake Joe would be attacking him for being weak, and letting rioting/violence destroy property and people's lives. Like all the Media, Joe flip-flops from calling Trump "Authoritarian" to accusing him of "Shirking Responsibility" on an almost daily basis. The only constant is ORANGE MAN BAD.

The MSM is constantly playing that game. Remember when Palin had an ad with a "Bullseye" that was supposedly inciting violence. But then Liberals/Democrats used even more violent language and graphics it was A-0K. You wonder if this endless MSM propaganda turns people off, or works on stupid people.

Fixed it for you

President Clinton's blow-jobs in the Oval Office while selling use of the Lincoln Bedroom to donors and accepting criminal donations from the Chinese and sitting back while Ossama bin Laden built the Taliban to the point that it could attack the US

President Obama corrupted the DoJ, the FNI, and the IRS. The Obama DoJ ran guns to Mexican drug gangs, getting American citizens and peace officer (like Randal Terry) murdered. The Obama DoJ lied to the FISA Court, using known Russian disinformation, in order to spy on the Republican Presidential campaign.

Two utterly corrupt dumpster fires in a row. Then there's the Carter Admin, which was a repeated and utter failure both domestically and internationally.

Then there is LBJ Admin which utterly screwed up the Vietnam War. The last even remotely competent Dem Admin ended in January of 1953

For THEMSELVES maybe. What planet did you lie on during Obama's administration if it was stable. Did you notice the riots happening and the lying of the Media then or did you sleep through it all.

Butter knives are notoriously dull edged. They are the least knifey of all knives. They are almost spoons. Sporks are sharpet than butter knives. Yet they do cut right through butter.

Trump wasn't emphasizing the KNIFEY aspect of the National Guard. He was emphasizing the BUTTERY weakness of the previously violent protesters, who dispersed rapidly when faced resolutely by a bit of butter-knife bluntness.

May all one's opponents in life be buttery.

So, it's nice to see that you don't deny that they both ran utterly corrupt and lawless administrations. I'm glad we can agree on that.

Clinton had "prosperity" only after he got a GOP Congress to hold him in check from his left-wing insanity, and only as a payoff from the hard work Reagan (and to a much lesser extent Bush) did defeating the USSR.

"Stability"? The genocide in Rwanda, the ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, the rise of the Taliban? The only "stability" of the Clinton Administration was provided by a dishonest press that refused to cover his manifold failures.

There was no prosperity during the Obama years, other than for the rich and politically connected. Obama presided over one of the worst "recoveries" in American history, because his crap left wing policies strangled the economy at almost every point

The Trump Administration brought us actual prosperity, which the Democrats have fought to destroy in every way that they can, because people succeeding is contrary to their political desires.

They want us all to be beggars, because beggars are easier to place.

I'm very amused by your claim that Bill "credibly accused of rape, rider of the Lolita Express" Clinton could be elected President today. Apparently even you believe that all Democrat claims to be concerned about sexual harassment are utter lies. Thanks for clearing that up, too.

Hint to ARM: You've failed here

Not only is cutting butter easy, but it's bloodless, and the butter is unhurt and better for the cutting. It takes lazy, useless, posing butter, and puts it to work doing something good and delicious. An excellent metaphor, Mr Trump.

The thing I like most is that I could never imagine Obama, or a Bush, or pretty much any other President saying it other than maybe Washington, Jackson, Lincoln or Teddy. Good company.

If what the left says about Trump was actually true there would be no riots or protests, because it would be suicidal. The fact that they are doing it with impunity, and being cheered on by the Press and Democrats proves that everything they have been saying about his dictatorial nature is lies. Every breath they take proves it, and they are too stupid to even realize it or appreciate what great things that says about Trump and the country. The radical left actually understands this, and it's why they feel confident with their violence. Eventually the radicals will insist on a strong response. It's what they want, and the country will have to stop them at some point, but the tolerance shown them so far eviscerates their baseless antifascist bullshit argument. It proves their movement has no real purpose in this nation. They should open up shop in China or Iran.

A city councilwoman in the small town where I live was complaining about confusing shelter-in-place orders from the county. She used the phrase "out of their cotton-picking mind."
