"By Biden’s Own Standards, He Is Guilty As Charged."

Headline at the new Andrew Sullivan column (in NY Magazine). Excerpt:
Perhaps in part to atone for his shabby treatment of Anita Hill, Biden was especially prominent in the Obama administration’s overhaul of Title IX treatment of claims of sexual discrimination and harassment on campus. You can listen to Biden’s strident speeches and rhetoric on this question and find not a single smidgen of concern with the rights of the accused. Men in college were to be regarded as guilty before being proven innocent, and stripped of basic rights in their self-defense....

In 2014, the Obama administration issued another guidance for colleges which expanded what “sexual violence” could include, citing “a range of behaviors that are unwanted by the recipient and include remarks about physical appearance; persistent sexual advances that are undesired by the recipient; unwanted touching; and unwanted oral, anal, or vaginal penetration or attempted penetration.” By that standard, ignoring the Reade allegation entirely, Joe Biden has been practicing “sexual violence” for decades: constantly touching women without their prior consent, ruffling and smelling their hair, making comments about their attractiveness, coming up from behind to touch their back or neck. You can see him do it on tape, on countless occasions.
Of course, his argument about all of that is that it wasn't sexual. Who thinks that hair smelling and neck nuzzling was a sexual advance on all those little girls (even if it always was on girls and not boys)?
He did not stop in 2014, to abide by the standards he was all too willing to impose on college kids. A vice-president could do these things with impunity; a college sophomore could have his life ruined for an inept remark.

Biden is now claiming simply that he never did what Tara Reade said he did. Let’s posit that he didn’t. Too bad.... By Biden’s own standards, he’s guilty as charged. He never got affirmative consent from Reade, and she feels and believes he assaulted her.
He says the entire incident didn't occur. There was no gym-bag-in-the-corridor encounter at all. Or... was there? Did Mika nail that down or not??
He never got affirmative consent for countless handsy moves over the decades that unsettled some of the recipients of such affection. End of story. By Biden’s own logic, it is irrelevant that he didn’t mean to harm or discomfit anyone, that Reade’s story may have changed over time, that she might have mixed motives, that she has a record of erratic behavior, a bizarre love for Vladimir Putin, and a stated preference for Bernie Sanders, who was Biden’s chief rival. It’s irrelevant that she appeared to tweet that she would wait to launch her accusations against Biden until the timing was right. And her cause has been championed by the Bernie brigade. The many red flags and question marks in her case are largely irrelevant under Biden’s own campus standards....
Bottom line: "I’ll vote for him anyway, because Trump."

The underlying truth here is Feminists really don't care about sexual assault. It is clearly a matter of who does the assaulting, and who is being assaulted. White Frat boy...guilty. Bill Clinton - who cares? It's a power tool. That's the set standard.

What idiots. Who would set a standard the one entire gender never lies?? Hahahaha.. And what type of ass kissing beta male would promote it? Joe Biden....

What's amazing is Feminists aren't pissed at the women who do sleep their way in the door, or up the ladder. In a sense, those women who use their sexuality to get ahead are setting up other women for a pretty unpleasant encounter. Are we going to pretend that doesn't happen?

Mind boggling, huh?

I wonder what the fag hags think gay men do in their relentless search for fresh meat?

The fag hags always somehow embrace Marxist feminism and gay worship. They were always telling me how great gay men are, even as those men acted in precisely the manner they condemned in straight men.

What a game feminist women play with the boys! And they do succeed in getting the boys at one another’s throats, which is the real goal.

We remember the Duke Lacrosse team, right? And the 81 Duke professors that signed away their integrity backing the false accuser? By Biden's standard, no investigation was necessary. All the players should have just gone to jail. The crooked prosecutor should have been promoted rather than sent to jail and disbarred , and the 81 professors should have received raises and an extra sabbatical.

It would be so much easier to be liberal if everyone would just quit asking questions and just go with the flow.

Joe Biden has already copped to the inappropriate feels. And his fate will be decided in the November election, if not at the August convention, without his being able to confront his accuser, quite possibly without him getting to see the complaint she says she filed against him. So as far as applying the standards that have always applied to public figures to college students, that may be wrong-headed but it is not hypocritical.

Sullivan doesn't get that this Biden case is (much) less about Biden than that whole caste of which Sullivan is a member, and it is not simply the MSM. They are a corrupt, putrid lot, all of them, and Sullivan is most definitely one of the corrupt.

This is not about what one person did, or whether that man is hypocritical, but about how a whole class thinks and believes and feels.

On his college-boy persecution laws, for instance, he does not mention that it was the colleges themselves that enthusiatically participated. This was not forced on them. There was no push back. That the entire Democratic party joined in various crusades in this front, some of which their activists actually organized (the Rolling Stone - UV case for one). And of course that the MSM went berserk on cue to further these policies.

And that is just one small thing.

Government bureaucracies, corporate management, educational institutions, non profits, non government organizations - the corruption and malice is universal.

All of them, these millions of people, are your enemies.

"A vice-president could do these things with impunity; a college sophomore could have his life ruined for an inept remark."

It's the second half of that sentence that is so wrong. Time for American society to remember that the sex drive is stronger and more interesting than going to the hardware store for some new lightbulbs.

It was just a generation ago, or so, that America worked more like this description:

"When Ferris lived in the town, no thought was given, for example, to venereal disease.... sexual affairs involved a spiritual and economic peril only. Men and women tasted one another as if at a smorgasbord of uncontaminated dishes, a tumble of treats, some steaming, some chilled, some nutritious, some not, but all clean.

"It had been a woman's town, dominated by female energy. To find oneself, of a weekday afternoon, in bed with another man's wife was to have achieved a certain membership -- an accreditation in primordial coin, a basic value within an Amazonian tribe."

Of course, it was a little easier for John Updike to be around of a weekday afternoon than for most of the men. Still, what has made contemporary women so boring? I think that's only true at the margins, myself, but that seems to be where the media and the academics all live. I'm not saying extramarital sex is a great thing in and of itself -- because I don't, although Updike did -- rather, I'm borrowing his account to reflect that humans still do have a sex drive and it is more complicated and involved than the fanciful, denatured versions of it that we now pretend to in public, like the prissiest of Victorians.

I was amazed that the Left started up the #MeToo movement with the intention of damaging the Right. I guess the women of the Left thought that if their men were such pigs, then the men of the Right just had to be worse.

But such is not the case. In reality, the Right tends to self-police on matters of sexuality more because the moral underbelly of the Right is still strongly religious, which isn't the case on the Left. Now, does religious moral policing often fail? Sure, all the time, but activity that must be kept clandestine will perforce occur less often than activity that is not only permitted but often lauded.

Men of the 60s & 70s who embraced the New Left in the US saw its call for sexual liberation as quite an advantage. It was thought that once women lost their restraining sense of religious repression they too would want in on the "Every Orifice, All the Time" orgy. There would be so much fun to be had!

Matter of fact, the abuse suffered by Lefty women at the hands (and other organs) of Lefty men did much to strengthen feminism as a movement on the Left. Lefty men never quite learned their lesson, perhaps because so many of the women telling them how gross they were really were "ugly dykes". What man, straight or gay, would listen to the likes of them?

It's no accident that so many of the "massive pervs" among men are liberals/lefties. It is, if anything, a rational development from their ideological roots.

Most women are feminine female first, and feminist second or not at all, because most men are not masculinists. There are exceptions, including the 14th Amendment, which introduced sex into the Constitution, and that is why there is, for example, the 19th Amendment. Well, yeah. In America, we don't ask you, "Who do you think should be President?". We allow you to choose A or B. And in any rational calculus, the question of how the candidate treats the women he encounters is a long, long way down the list of relevant criteria. In fact, one could argue that it is better an abusive man be elected President, since it will place him under greater scrutiny, and may thereby reduce his opportunities to misbehave.

Funny how so many feel a need to dump on Sullivan for saying plainly something about Biden and his hypocrisy they clearly agree with. He also says clearly that, for him, Biden's hypocrisy and faults are outweighed by what he sees as Trump's.

No one (no sane person, anyway) disputes that Trump has faults a-plenty, and Team Trump always makes the point that, politics being an exercise in picking from flawed candidates, his flaws are less bad than those of the other side's candidate. So why the need to pretend Sullivan is doing something different, when the only real difference is he is acknowledging clearly and powerfully a major problem with candidate Biden and then declaring his own priorities (and his reason) nonetheless?

So give him an A for both honesty and transparency (whether you agree with his views and bottom line or not). Doing the opposite makes any kind of conversation with people of different political views impossible.

Mika said several times when the complaints about Biden’s unwanted sniffing and touching first surfaced in the primaries that there was nothing sexual about Viden’s creepy touching. When Biden took a big breath and nuzzled/ sniffed the hair of Lucy Flores, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor of Nevada in 2014 before they went on stage he was just getting ready to speak on stage. Mika for one like it when Biden hugged her or kissed her or grabbed her hand.

Lucy Flores was not so receptive:
“As I was taking deep breaths and preparing myself to make my case to the crowd, I felt two hands on my shoulders. I froze. “Why is the vice-president of the United States touching me?”

I felt him get closer to me from behind. He leaned further in and inhaled my hair. I was mortified. I thought to myself, “I didn’t wash my hair today and the vice-president of the United States is smelling it. And also, what in the actual fuck? Why is the vice-president of the United States smelling my hair?” He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head. My brain couldn’t process what was happening. I was embarrassed. I was shocked. I was confused. There is a Spanish saying, “tragame tierra,” it means, “earth, swallow me whole.”

No, the important thing is that, unless the accusations are made in a court of law in a timely manner, there is no reason to believe them. If you're not willing to make the accusation in a forum where you're sworn in, subject to cross-examination, and where your ulterior motives, if any, might be exposed, then every sensible person should just ignore you. If you're not willing to have your accusation tested in the system set up to judge the truth of these things, why should anyone pay you any mind?

5/1/20, 12:45 PM

I take the opposite approach: at least since 2016, Republicans have had an opportunity to not just flap their gums over whose perceived list of flaws is more serious, but who sticks to their virtues. And by that score, Donald Trump has easily demonstrated a greater commitment to the American people than any president in decades- including Ronald Reagan. After all, Trump didn't sign an amnesty or invite the execrable Bush family to start a dynasty. Joe Biden's "empathy" and "regular guy" shtick is phony and played-out, but I can acknowledge they'd be reasons to vote for him. But a core identity issue, for Joe Biden and the Democrats generally, is the image of women's liberation stacked up against their persistent sexual abuse of women. If Donald Trump had merely addressed economic issues like a Bush-style free trader, I'd admit that would be a serious strike against him being re-elected. His non-religious lifestyle was a problem throughout the 2016 campaign, yet he's been a better president on Christian issues than anyone since 1984. Et cetera.

I mean, I understand that a gay media celebrity is obviously going to put basic safety issues for women/ media corruption at the bottom of his to-do list, but I have no idea why weak conservatives seriously expect him to get attaboy. Andrew Sullivan is only acknowledging what is going to be a major election issue. Like Bill Clinton, Joe Biden has a long record of sexual abuse trailing him. Unlike Clinton, Biden's a charmless dotard facing competent opposition. So if the Dems persist, they can enjoy massive losses all along the board.

Andrew said, "Am I the only person left who thinks that Anita Hill was lying?"

No.

Now I don't know whether Anita Hill was lying or not, but I do know she was lying even if she was telling the truth.

The problem with whole Anita Hill business is that she alleged was such a minor thing. Basically she claimed that Clarence Thomas made it clear that he was attracted to her. It's easy to believe that because it is such a common thing. Men are attracted to women. It's built into our genes. We would have gone extinct long ago if this wasn't true.

Now the issue Anita Hill raises immediately splits in two directions.

First should it be a crime (or an disqualification to becoming a Supreme Court justice) if a man makes it clear to a woman that he is sexually attracted to her?

Well I don't think so. I think this is absurd. And of course that whole issue expands out from there.

The second part is the problem of Anita Hill lying. It's pretty clear that for Anita Hill, Clarence Thomas's real offense is his politics. Anita Hill never would have made such a charge about a man that she agreed with politically.

And since the same was true for basically all of Anita Hill's supporters, then this expands to a third of the population lying about their motivations and why they were supporting Anita Hill. A third or so of the population willing to perjure themselves for political gain. Lying, in most cases, both to themselves and everyone else about what they were doing and why.

And then there is one special fact that I can recall that shows something is wrong with Anita Hill's story. When Thomas Clarence moved to a new position he asked Anita Hill whether she wished to go with him. And she did! And she got a new job to go with him!

That of course means that Anita Hill's testimony about what happened can't have been accurate. It means at minimum she could not accurately state her own state of mind. And at worse that the whole thing might have been a confabulation, based on something probably, but perhaps seriously exaggerated.

Gk1 said...

But I think Andrew is going to be relieved of his pain. Slow Joe is headed for the off ramp.

I bet Joe is one reason why Michelle Obama wants nothing to do with politics.

Good bye, Joe. You were always an idiot.

Am I the only person left who thinks that Anita Hill was lying?

To be honest I'd be more than happy if the democrats came to their senses and said "You know what, this is horseshit what we pulled on Kavanaugh and Justice Thomas, we need to get back to a standard of 'innocent until proven guilty'." Never happen in a million years but watching due process thrown out the window for political sport is getting us nowhere and has been truly damaging to the culture. I don't take much satisfaction watching Biden explode like the Hindenburg.

Had Trump sniffed the hair of my daughter the way creepy Joe sniffed the hair of so many daughters, I would not have voted in 2016.

I remember when I was young and Democratic cool people just could not believe that Republicans did not get how square Nixon was.

And now I don't get how Democratic voters do not get how creepy Joe Biden is - well at least in those primary states where he came in somewhere ahead of third.

If you are a Democratic voter, pray to God that you will not have to pull the lever for that creepy Botox person in November.

Is there some evidence of this other than the word of the woman who chose to work for Thomas and followed him from job to job even after the supposed harassment? Against her word you have the word of Justice Thomas and a whole host of women who have known and worked with him, and they all say Anita Hill's testimony is not the Clarence Thomas they know. What would it take to convince you that she lied?

There were two other women who complained about Thomas. Not much to speak of. He would talk to one woman who worked for him about his woman troubles. I don't know about the other. He asked her out or he complemented her on her physique. I don't know if they were telling the whole truth, but it seemed likely to me that Thomas probably had boundary problems and that he assumed there was more intimacy between himself and Black women on his staff than there was and that he could say things he would better have avoided saying. This was not a problem that others on his staff would have noticed. I couldn't say how much truth there was in Hill's allegations but it's not impossible that there was a kernel of truth in there. It was not enough to make her resign or file a complaint and it wasn't something that she would have complained about if she agreed with his politics.

Regarding claims of sexual harassment and assault, consider that Trump is not asked about the rape allegation made against him by E. Jean Carroll. He denied in 2019 knowing her and recycled a grotesque trope, namely that rape is about sexual attraction. “She’s not my type,” he declared during an interview with the Hill in 2019. She is currently suing him for defamation. Trump is not asked about this suit, about a similar lawsuit from Summer Zervos (based on his denial of her allegation that he groped her) or any other alleged assault or instance of harassment. He has never answered a bevy of questions (as Biden did Friday) on any, let alone all, of these allegations. What we get looks an awful lot like 2016: The media stops harping on Trump’s alleged, egregious wrongdoing but demands details and a full accounting from his opponent for the Democrats’ conduct.

The media has adopted the approach that a pattern of sexual harassment claims over decades is not relevant because Trump has denied them, yet they (properly) want investigated the single assault claim against Biden. Biden responded in an interview and in a lengthy written statement; the media insists these things have to be investigated further. They do not ask Trump’s campaign why the president does not respond to questions. They do not ask Republicans about Carroll, Zervos or others.

The media regularly deny the accusation that they normalize Trump’s conduct and insist they are “balanced," yet they have neglected to hold Trump accountable for his conduct, just as they regularly fail to hold Republicans to account for the protesters we now see around the country — some white nationalists, some sporting Confederate flags, and most refusing to following social distancing directives. Republicans have gotten very good at intimidating the media — “working the refs” — and it shows.

100% this. We have a court system for a reason. Public accusations not backed up by a police report are just rumors.

At least Joe didn't go with, "Jeez, she was hot when she was young, and we guys used to cop a feel, and no harm done. And the girls were not insulted, it was kind of a compliment. Come on man! Why was she doing that sloe-eyed earth child thing if she didn't want it? I heard she liked me!"

It’s instructive that Sullivan made no mention at all of the case that most closely parallels the position that Biden, the Democrats, and their enablers in the press finds themselves in: Kavanaugh. Of course, if he had, it would show what utter hypocrites they all were, not just Biden, this way he gets to just mildly attack Biden alone instead of pointing out that they were all in on it.

And he notes that the Obama/Biden era Title IX travesty is thankfully being by scaled back, but doesn’t acknowledge that it’s the evil Trump and DeVos who are doing it, and that he vote for the man who’ll likely bring back the campus kangaroo courts if he wins. Due process for me, but not for thee.
