An estimated 14-25 percent of New Yorkers are positive for antibodies.
So that means they were infected and recovered.

But those numbers would reflect who was infected a couple of weeks ago.
IOW the numbers right now are probably higher than even those tests reveal.

Nice ones. Today was a gorgeous day. Mid 50's, sunny, light to no breeze. Went for a long walk, peaceful and refreshing. Visited an old cemetery (1700's) nearby. The writing on the stones is well worn and hard to read. Sitting there was remarkably comforting.

Meanwhile, the natives are increasingly restless. I live in the Northeast, hotspot nationally for the virus. Cases are up but so is testing. Deaths are down from yesterday. Have we peaked? Let's hope so.

So, at the task force briefing, William N. Bryan, acting undersecretary for science and technology at DHS reported that, in the words of the Washington Post, "experiments, carried out by the Homeland Security Department’s Science and Technology Directorate at the Army’s high biosecurity lab at Ft. Detrick, Md., largely match other laboratory studies conducted elsewhere showing that the novel coronavirus, like many other viruses, does not survive as long on certain surfaces when exposed to high ultraviolet light and warm and humid conditions. The laboratory results show that increases in temperature, humidity and sunlight can all speed up how fast the virus is destroyed, based on measurements of its half-life when exposed to these elements."

Of course, when President Trump subsequently said the same thing as the WP story, expressing some hope in the results, saying that maybe this works, maybe it doesn't, he was roundly criticized.

Preprint study out of China. Basically, the place you have the lowest risk of becoming infected is outdoors, which is probably not surprising.

“Results: Three hundred and eighteen outbreaks with three or more cases were identified, involving 1245 confirmed cases in 120 prefectural cities. We divided the venues in which the outbreaks occurred into six categories: homes, transport, food, entertainment, shopping, and miscellaneous. Among the identified outbreaks, 53.8% involved three cases, 26.4% involved four cases, and only 1.6% involved ten or more cases. Home outbreaks were the dominant category (254 of 318 outbreaks; 79.9%), followed by transport (108; 34.0%; note that many outbreaks involved more than one venue category). Most home outbreaks involved three to five cases. We identified only a single outbreak in an outdoor environment, which involved two cases. Conclusions: All identified outbreaks of three or more cases occurred in an indoor environment, which confirms that sharing indoor space is a major SARS-CoV-2 infection risk.”

There was a haze in my spirit, something indefinable, smoky-thick, but I knew how to cross, religiously, the steps that lead to your altar, and as wind drives off the fritillary, so you have cleared this dim mist. Masks may not make much of a difference after all. N95s not tested.

“Neither surgical nor cotton masks effectively filtered SARS–CoV-2 during coughs by infected patients. Prior evidence that surgical masks effectively filtered influenza virus (1) informed recommendations that patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 should wear face masks to prevent transmission (2). However, the size and concentrations of SARS–CoV-2 in aerosols generated during coughing are unknown. Oberg and Brousseau (3) demonstrated that surgical masks did not exhibit adequate filter performance against aerosols measuring 0.9, 2.0, and 3.1 μm in diameter. Lee and colleagues (4) showed that particles 0.04 to 0.2 μm can penetrate surgical masks. The size of the SARS–CoV particle from the 2002–2004 outbreak was estimated as 0.08 to 0.14 μm (5); assuming that SARS-CoV-2 has a similar size, surgical masks are unlikely to effectively filter this virus.”

The presentation by the DHS secretary was fascinating and the charts pretty much showed that direct sunlight, and heat and humidity kill the virus very quickly. A reporter asked why New Orleans had so many cases, ignoring the fact that New Orleans is full of people who like to party, had the Mardi Gras in Feb, and doesn't get particularity hot in Feb and march.

Trump joked that he may move out of the Oval Office and into the Rose Garden. No doubt this will be presented as a serious POTUS statement.

This may account for the low number of cases in Hawaii (along with the quarantine of visitors). Lots of sun, lots of heat/humidity, lots of open areas without A/C. They'll do fine if the keep the tourists out.

It was 75 degrees and sunny yesterday and today. The weekend should be the same. I plan to be out and about in the beautiful weather--sans mask. Screw the Karens.

The environment is the human body. Not the atmosphere, not the air, not surfaces. While they may be a way the virus is spread, the virus cannot survive outside a body. Fever can help kill the virus inside the body. Sunlight cannot get inside the human body. Disinfectant cannot get inside the human body without killing it.

Kyjo said...

@Howard, while not unreasonable assumptions, those are not established science with respect to reducing SARS-2 transmission. Perhaps even cloth masks are better than nothing, but there’s a threshold after which better than nothing can become counterproductive on a community-wide scale. Think “false sense of security.”

“Of note, we found greater contamination on the outer than the inner mask surfaces. Although it is possible that virus particles may cross from the inner to the outer surface because of the physical pressure of swabbing, we swabbed the outer surface before the inner surface. The consistent finding of virus on the outer mask surface is unlikely to have been caused by experimental error or artifact. The mask's aerodynamic features may explain this finding. A turbulent jet due to air leakage around the mask edge could contaminate the outer surface. Alternatively, the small aerosols of SARS–CoV-2 generated during a high-velocity cough might penetrate the masks. However, this hypothesis may only be valid if the coughing patients did not exhale any large-sized particles, which would be expected to be deposited on the inner surface despite high velocity.”

I had a feeling when I arose early this morning that Ann’s first post would be about Trump and Kemp and I was right. I think Kemp is being unfairly attacked by Trump and the media. Other states are also moving toward some limited re-opening in the next few weeks.

I saw yesterday a comment on FB from a beautician about the requirements for hairdressers to re-open. They are pretty strict. Penalties for failure to follow the guidelines could result in loss of licenses.

Kemp released requirements for restaurants this afternoon. I don’t see how this is any different than what any other state would do. Listed below for your perusal

Restaurants can resume providing dine-in services under the following conditions (among others):
No more than 10 patrons per 500 square feet are allowed inside at once.
All employees are required to wear masks at all times.
Employers must screen and evaluate workers who exhibit signs of illness, such as a fever over 100.4 degrees and a cough or shortness of breath.
Restaurants must post signs that say no one with symptoms of COVID_19 can enter.
Party size is limited to no more than 6 per table.
Salad bars and buffets are no longer allowed.
Restaurants must use pre-rolled silverware.
Items must be removed from self-service drink, condiment, utensil and tableware stations and have workers provide those items to patrons.
Patrons must be kept separated while waiting to be seated through floor markings or waiting in cars.
Workers who show signs of illness can’t come in to work. Employees who have COVID-19 must self-isolate for 7 days and be fever-free and symptom-free for 3 days before coming back to work.
Employers must train employees on the importance of frequent handwashing, use of hand sanitizers and avoiding touching their faces.
Playgrounds must stay closed.

Here’s Where the States Fall on the COVID-19 Curve (Spoiler: All Are at or Beyond Their Peaks)

Big Mike said...

Lots of stuff to talk about. For instance Chris ("Fredo") Cuomo seems to have passed his COVID-19 infection on to his wife and now his son. Ah, Chris, let me fill you in on a secret. That damned virus doesn't know about your big time contract with CNN; it thinks you and your family are just ordinary members of h. sapiens, like anyone else. Go figure.

Speaking of Cuomo family members, I am still stunned by Andrew's petulant remark to a tame reporter who asked about protestors complaining that they want to get back to work.

"You want to go to work?" the governor responded. "Go take a job as an essential worker. Do it tomorrow."

This is what passes for a savvy politician in the Democrat party. Talk about a political tin ear! Wow. Just, wow.

Another Democrat politician has been in the news. Vernon Jones (D - Georgia) was fed up with his party's treatment of African-Americans. Discussing the Democrats' party platform, Jones said "When you look at the platform, there is nothing specifically in there to help African Americans. Yes, there’s something for illegal immigrants. Yes, there’s something for the LGBTQ community. But there is nothing there for the African American community.” He went on to say "Turn out the lights, I have left the plantation." Jones received intense pressure to resign, and announced that he would do so. Well, his constituents disagreed with his resigning, and told him so, and today he announced that he's not going to resign after all. On Twitter he wrote:

"Yesterday, I announced my intentions to resign from my office. But shortly thereafter, the outpour of support I received was too great for me to ignore. I will not allow the Democrats to bully me into submission. I will not let them win. I will NOT resign." He closed out his tweet with "#MAGA"

I don't imagine that Vernon Jones have a lot of points of philosophical agreement, but it's good to see someone who cares more about his country and his constituents than his party. Pity there aren't more like him among the Democrats.

Had an illuminating conversation with one of my docs today--a thought leader in leukemia, working at an NCI center.

The corona panic made taking care of his critically ill patients far more difficult. These are patients diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia and acute myelogenous leukemia. The kind of acuity where you go to the doctor for fatigue and unexplained bruising one day, and the next day you are in-patient, getting worked up for chemotherapy, your life blown to smithereens.

While the team agreed to prioritize the acute leuks and those going to hematapoietic stem cell transplant, their care became more difficult. The team was encouraged to work from home on days they didn't have clinic--necessarily making communication with the staff difficult. Other patients, acutely ill, but in a consolidation or maintenance phase, had treatment put off, or workarounds put in place so that treatment could occur outpatient. Some treatments that would normally be initiated inpatient were moved to outpatient, despite the risk of adverse events being greater.

Clinical trials have been stopped in many cases, because clinical site coordinators from pharma cannot come onto campus. This means that patients who have no approved treatment are not getting put into potentially life-saving trials. This will also set back research for many months, if not years. A trial for a new leukemia therapy typically lasts 2-4 years from initiation to conclusion of the study. Enrollment takes a long time because leukemia is still rare (thankfully), and not every patient meets trial criteria. A drug that may have come to market in a year now may not make it for 2 or 3--or not at all.

There is a real cost to this--in real people's lives, and the lives of those who love and care for them. Here in California, many of those lives are the lives that the panic! peddlers don't seem to think about: Hispanics, primarily; many farm workers.

But I guess it was all worth it if it saved EVEN ONE LIFE.

@Drago, to be fair, the subways haven’t been running at full tilt. They reduced service, which forced the lower numbers of essential commuters to crowd cars just as usual to get to work. It’s been brilliant. I’ll note that the Chinese study I referenced above named transport as the second most common venue for outbreaks, after homes.

I suspect we here in Florida with our heat and humidity and the understanding that life comes with risk, will be dining out at a restaurant sometime in the near future while our friends in New York will still be singing out their windows.

At least they'll get to watch Andrew Cuomo speak every day.

You really have no idea how dumb you sound. The point is that Drago and dummies like Trump are touting the notion that by exposing the human body to UV light (or getting it inside the body somehow!) it will kill the Covid inside their bodies. UV light and bleach, alcohol etc. can kill viruses on surfaces, we all know that, that isn’t news. UV rays inside buildings are very limited. Disinfectants are best used OUTSIDE the body in case any dummies like Trump or Drago encourage you to drink bleach. Don’t do it.

And that our President was referring to the same thing--same as happens with influenza every year.

Could you please save me the trouble of looking for your evident stupidity (per the harpy's citation) and just repeat your inanity for me?

Drago, how are you going to disinfect every surface with sunlight? Can you disinfect your kitchen countertop with sunlight, if it’s away from a window? How well do UV rays travel through glass? Viruses do not reside outside only, they reside inside buildings. You are much more likely to get infected with Covid inside a building.
**********
Who says "every" surface has to be disinfected with sunlight?

Outdoor air subjected to sunlight will also kill most viruses, as it does the flu. Opening your windows to let that outdoor air inside will reduce the volume of "bad" indoor ar, right?

If you are more likely to get infected with covid inside a building, then why all the orders to cringe-in-place indoors? Why are parks roped off so people can't go outside in the Spring sun to enjoy them? Why are people urged to wear masks when they go outside, but no indoors in their homes?

The human will remain very much alive.

But I guess it was all worth it if it saved EVEN ONE LIFE."

Remains to be seen if, on balance, it even did that.

Which MSMer will prominently report the first story of a middle-aged cancer patient who died as a result of The Panic of 2020?

And of course, the economic collapse has effects beyond the U.S. It is telling that American progs' Trump derangement overrides even basic concern for the lives of others. Surely some leftist somewhere could have called BS on the shutdowns as a matter of global justice. I mean, they could have asked why the whole world should suffer for our effort to extend the lives of sick old people in nursing homes by a year or two.

I have been in my car, my kid's car, and several friends' cars.

I am a lousy hand-washer. That is, I don't wash my hands (or Purell them) before or after I enter my home. According to received wisdom, my surfaces must be a veritable petri dish of Chinese Lung Scrapie virus. Thus, I should have gotten or should now have the virus. Because it is EVERYWHERE, and my hot car doesn't protect me.

Hmm. The logic chain seems to have broken somewhere.

And I was told I don't exist, my arm doesn't exist, the lesion doesn't exist, my brother-in-law doesn't exist...etc, etc, etc, ad vomitum.

Well, the lesion is getting excised next week. Invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Not an emergency--precisely because I caught it early.

But illustrative of my point: how many of the people our betters use for menial work will suffer needlessly because of this lockdown?

That is nothing but a lie.

That is not what is being claimed by anyone.

Lots of viruses don't like heat. I don't have a medical degree, but I've lived through dozens of viral epidemics. Swine epidemics. And everyone of them started when the weather got cold, and left when spring arrived. Because warmer temperatures and sunlight took out the virus.
That's why nursing homes could learn a lot from Iowa hog farmers about securing their facilities from viruses. They have been fighting this for decades, and are good at their jobs.

None of this is plowing new ground. Even President Trump was smart enough to intuitively understand.

Yes, that has been an underlying tension in America going back to the federalits versus the anti-federalists. It seemed to be decisively destroyed by the Civil War, but simmering resentments and tensions have lingered ever since.

One of my more heterodox opinions is that the United States should be broken up into smaller regional countries. These regional states would be much more reflective and responsive to the needs and values of their constituents. Unfortunately, I see very little possibility that this will occur either voluntarily or as the result of conflict.

Border enforcement, defense, and maintaining the currency make sense for a federal union. But one of my pet peeves is when people talk about the intention of the "founding fathers." One of those intentions was an amendment process, and it's been used many times, and that has fundamentally changed the relationship between the federal government and the states. And the constitution's most glaring error is that it did not address secession. Always be wary of joining a union you can't get out of.

When there was a government shutdown last year, and many families who depended on the paycheck that the only person in the family had - I am talking about families that were not rich, families that relied on the only person in the family with a job, which was at that time a government job - well during the government shutdown last year, I had some very bad nights arguing on this website with very selfish people who mocked every government worker who was out of a job.

I was stunned, stunned to realize that there were people who were mocking people who were out of work, simply because they thought it was cool to be "anti-gummint". I told them they were wrong to feel contempt for the government workers who were not getting a paycheck, they repaid my good advice with spite and hatred and vicious mockery.

I hope that all those fools of yesteryear are now on the side of the angels. The government has no inherent right to tell people their jobs are not essential. Of course those jobs are essential to the family that will go without food and shelter if nobody can work. But that is what the government has been doing, without explanation.

Ultraviolet blood irradiation
"Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UBI) was extensively used in the 1940s and 1950s to treat many diseases including septicemia, pneumonia, tuberculosis, arthritis, asthma and even poliomyelitis. The early studies were carried out by several physicians in USA and published in the American Journal of Surgery. However with the development of antibiotics, the use of UBI declined and it has now been called “the cure that time forgot”."

Internal UV Treatment Administered Via Endoscopy
"Thus there is a need and opportunity to address these more severe bacterial and viral infections that occur within a body.
BRIEF SUMMARY
The approach we propose to address this issue is the use of a flexible and small diameter tube that would insert one or more optical fibers into upper or lower gastrointestinal tract, some hollow organs, such as the lungs, or bladder, or some of the structures leading to hollow organs of a body, such trachea, esophagus, throat, and urethra."

That is what everyone was talking about.

I know lots of government workers. Most of them took the time off to go someplace fun and/or visit family. Everyone of them knew the money was on the way.

And if you recall, the media painted that as the most horrific possible thing that could ever happen to an employee.

Now?

The media is literally desperate to keep the economy shut down thru the fall and have half the country go insolvent.
