"When presidents go abroad, their trips are typically prewired to include a number of “deliverables,” things like trade deals, security agreements and heavily scripted statements by leaders of their affection for one another."

"But President Donald Trump’s journey halfway around the world this coming week is primarily about something else India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised him — a massive, largely adoring crowd, perhaps the largest he’s ever addressed."

The spin on Trump's India trip — from the L.A. Times via MSN News.

That reminds me, Trump retweeted this yesterday:

Indian Twitter accounts are strongly motivated to put up amusing pro-Trump stuff.

ADDED: "We would like to express our feelings and our happiness through our paintings...."

India is our most important ally against Chinese hegemony. Making a trip there just to entertain the masses and not make the trip about some deal or something that we are getting out of it is a great sign of respect.

Barack can bring home the Nobel. And follow it up with an Olympic gold in the downhill. Fastest time ever! Check your tire pressure, kids! You'll need then to get out of town when the BP well blows and the EPA won't let the clean-up boats to operate as designed because the water they are putting back into the ocean isn't 100% clean on the first pass--only 97%+.

It's always something with these people. If it were "pre-wired", they would complain it's just window dressing for an election year photo op and thus unethical to use the office for campaigning. Once you understand it's "Orange Man Bad" all the way down, nothing is good and the only important information people need to know is the bad.

Probably not. Hopefully he won't pander too much. It's not really his style, or, or at least, if he does pander it's not so obvious.

There are those who think he's going after Joe Biden's 7-11 vote with his trip to India. But we know that's the Pakistani vote. I think he's going after the Hotel Owners Association vote.

Seriously- there's a group of very productive, well educated, US citizens with family back there. Another constituency to pay attention to? Not in numbers, perhaps. But in influence?

Oh, and there's this: It's a pretty damned important country, with a huge population, bordering Pakistan, and a mountain-range away from China, with a burgeoning economy (until coronavirus).

Why would Trump go to India? It's been reported repeatedly, as fact, that Trump hates brown people. The mainstream media and Democrats wouldn't lie to me!

Went to my daughter in law’s citizenship ceremony the other day. 540 applicants from 78 different countries became US citizens. The most of course were from Mexico, 140. The county with the second most? India with 80.

BTW, it was the first of 3 such ceremonies they held that day.

Hey hey hey, does this explain the NYT's article yesterday on why India is a bigoted shithole full of rapists? You'd think so, but that confuses cause and effect. In reality, the NYT has been castigating India in no uncertain terms for months, even at the risk of a massive shift in the Indian diaspora to Trump. Legal immigrants can't think much of illegal ones. So what does explain the left's sudden allergic reaction to India? Is it the plight of Muslims? Nonsense, the example of China shows the left can't shut up fast enough about Muslim persecution if it's done by the right people.

Could it be that India has generally rejected the advice offered by the Special True Americans, which means the Soros agenda has given up on co-opting Hindu nationalism? Why, I do believe that's the case.

Why is Trump so popular in India. I'm happy to see it, but I don't understand why his charm is so potent in that part of the world....I understand his forebears are Scottish and German. So far as I know, that hasn't given him a leg up in those locales, or, maybe, like in America he's just not popular with the media and the people who like to demonstrate.

Skeptical Voter said...

Michael K is right re the LA Times. It ceased to be a serious paper circa 2008 when its
"news" pages were full time fellating the New Light Worker. Then in 2016 the "reporters" took off their knee pads and got their spears to poke Orange Man Bad. It takes me maybe 3 minutes tops each morning to look for non TDS articles in the "news" section. The California and Business sections--maybe 2 minutes total. The sports section is mostly, but not entirely TDS free. But even it is not very useful.

Look on the bright side--I rarely take more than 15 minutes out of my day to handle the daily chore of reading the local newspaper.

Funny, nobody, not Ann, not commenters, mentions the reason for the trip.

Nuclear power. Westinghouse is selling 6 gigawatt nuclear power plants to India.

This will:

Bring in at least $6billion or so

Reduce india's co2 emissions for those who think this a problem

Give us more experience and expertise in building nuclear power plants.

Help Westinghouse sell more nukes.

As slojo would say "this is a big fucking deal!"

A major win for the administration. Which is why the media ignores it.

Safe, stable, reliable, environmentally isolated, low carbon emitters, high-density energy production that is not a Green blight upon the land, flora, and fauna, to power low efficiency EVs, high social status websites, and other luxury goods and services, as well as industry, farms, homes, schools, hospitals, etc.

My India friends love Trump. They started off anti-Trump, and the realized he was anti-CCP and pro-Modi. Modi is hugely popular right now and India has finally shifted their foreign policy to become pro-American. Perfect timing for both me.

Lyle said...

rcocean,

Trump doesn't support immigration restriction for the highly skilled, which most Indian immigrants to the U.S. are. So, the restrictions on low-skill labor isn't an issue with them. What they want is the U.S. to ally with India against China and help India out economically. Trump brings all these things to the table.

In the Houston Indian community the support is overwhelmingly pro-Trump. The 50,000 plus rally with Modi was in Houston.

A lot of coding was farmed out to IT shops in India. I figured it would have been better to farm out management to India. The south Asians I worked with while chained to the oars on the lower decks were excellent at coding properly, but lacked the mutinous spirit required to do serious hacking.

Perhaps the visit is a serious message to China: India has a large educated labor force skilled in IT and engineering. Now the Gandhian socialism is set aside, Trump's darshan is a signal that incentives will follow to move more US industry and commercial ventures to South Asia.

That would be a coup on both sides.

Prog almost gets it. The point is not the crowd as such. The deliverable is the message delivered: world loves Trump, brown people love Trump, progs are wrong.

Of course, progs being progs, we see strong resistance to learning from the obvious error. Don't change, progs!

The Indian community is silicon valley seem uniformly hostile to Trump as far as I have seen. Mostly lazy tropes about Trump being racists, not wanting brown skin people as immigrants etc. etc. Then they have a disconnect when Trump comes out against importing more H1B temp tech workers (which is an existential threat to the entrenched silicon valley indian software engineers with green cards) They love his tough love on china and sing his praises yet can't bare to support him. And yes, their family back home is way more pro-trump by light years. Maybe its just the water in the bay area?
